LittleBigPlanet: Metal Gear Solid DLC![]() Developer: Media Molecule Publisher: SCEA Release Date: December 23rd, 2008 Genre: Platformer Platform(s): PlayStation Network Rating: E - Everyone Price: $5.99 LittleBigPlanet was a giant game of 2008, probably one of the most talked about games of the year. LittleBigPlanet was also a really good game to boot, and though there are some parts of the game that could be a lot better, the overall experience is something everyone can enjoy. Right before Christmas of 2008, Media Molecule released a Metal Gear Solid themed DLC pack that came with 5 new levels that are MGS4 themed, with tons of new unlockables, all that fits with the Metal Gear Solid franchise. What the $5.99 download gives you is 5 levels, a new Paintball gun for shooting enemies with, and a bunch of MGS themed items to collect throughout. All of the 5 levels are all pretty cool, and they fit the MGS4 theme. The first level is a tiny introduction with you (Sackboy) dropping into the back of a moving truck while it moves through the war, telling you things like, “the war had changed”, which is just a parody of the introduction to Metal Gear Solid 4. After that, the second stage is a VR mission that introduces you to the Paintball Gun that you will use throughout the rest of the levels. So really, the pack only contains 2 regular levels, while the first 2 are introductory levels, and the final stage is just a boss. For six dollars, this may seem like a bit of a rip-off, since you can easily beat the entire pack in less than a half-hour. Though each stage contains its fair amount of MGS themed stickers and items, you basically spending six bucks on an extension of the story, since the 5 levels are presented exactly like the main story in LittleBigPlanet. But the levels that you do play in are actually really fun. First you’ll start out small dodging spotlights, like classic Metal Gear Solid, but you will quickly be given the Paintball gun to eliminate all of the enemies that stand in your way. The Paintball Gun is really easy to use, but can take some time to get used to. You shoot it by pressing L1, and aim it with the right analog stick. Repeatedly pressing L1 will make the paintballs shoot faster, and hitting weak-spots on enemies will cause them to be defeated. The paintballs do not go perfectly straight like normal gun does, so you’ll have to aim a little differently to get the right angle on enemies. Most of the enemies you see in the pack are machines that will shoot green blobs at you, that will cause you to disintegrate. Dodging the blobs are usually pretty easy because the enemies never actually know where you are, they just shoot randomly, and if a blob hits you, then you just didn’t dodge it in time. You can either walk left or right to dodge them, but you can also take cover with the 3 different view points of the level, like in the normal LittleBigPlanet game. But like the main game, switching between these views can be difficult sometimes, so there’s no doubt in my mind that it will frustrate you at least once. All of the MGS themed items you collect are sometimes easy, but are difficult to collect as well. Most of them are primarily Metal Gear Solid 4 themed, but you can also a bunch of songs that will feature a bunch of different Metal Gear Solid songs from almost every game in the series. And while all of the stickers, items, and music is cool to collect, and ultimately own, it does seem kind of odd that the levels are there considering Media Molecule is releasing costumes for Sackboy that are just as much as this whole pack. So the pricing can be confusing. Is it a good deal, considering the other things you can download for LBP? Or is the costumes ridiculously overpriced, and the pack is a steal? But the pack also includes 10 more Trophies to try and collect. When I finished the entire pack, I only unlocked 2 of them, and one of them was for defeating the REX boss at the end. Sure, more trophies are cool, but I hate when I complete a game and I only have a fraction of them, and I half to go back through all of the levels to get the rest of them that I missed the first time. Some of the trophies are also ridiculously hard as well, so most people that play the pack will only get 2 or 3 of them, instead 9 or 10. The Metal Gear Solid pack for LittleBigPlanet is hard to recommend. Sure, the 10 new trophies are fun to try and collect, and the levels are all MGS4 themed, which is cool in its own right. But for $6, you pretty much get 3 normal stages, a boss fight, and a bunch of Metal Gear Solid items. You can say that this pack is a steal considering that you can buy a costume pack for the same price, but I still can’t consider any 30 minute DLC pack to be worth anything more than $5. Sure, the pack may only be one dollar, and maybe 50 cents over priced, but its over priced either way. If you’re a huge Metal Gear Solid fan, buy it, you’ll probably be satisfied, but if you’re not interested in MGS at all, then pass.
