While Xbox Live Arcade has been booming with amazing titles like Braid, Banjo Kazooie, and Castle Crashers, the PlayStation has seen its fair share of downloadable games, but most of them aren’t up to snuff to the Xbox Live downloads. With Sony’s new downloadable title, Flower, you can now look at the PlayStation Network entirely different. Flower is not only one of the most beautiful games I have ever played, but you’ll be so into the game that you want to put the controller down; the game is amazing. I could on, on how much I love Flower, and how it is a must-buy for anyone with a PlayStation Network account, but that would take too much time. Instead, read my review, and buy the game.

But if you’re thinking that Flower is going to blow you away in terms of sheer gameplay, you’re going to be disappointed. Flower is like a poem people like to say, and though it might seem a little lame, Flower is as close to a poem, than any other game on the market today. When you start Flower up, instead of directly going into the action with a menu with the normal “start new game” and “continue”, they dump you right into the level select screen, and each stage is represented by a pot of flowers. You will only start off with one level to select from, but as you beat more and more you’ll unlock them as you go.

Flower plays like a game just as well as flOw did; it’s not much of a game at all. All you is control the wind with the Sixaxis, tilting the controller to turn, and holding down the X button will make you move. Flower is a really straight-forward game, there isn’t much to the gameplay, and you’re only given what’s there. All you do for entire is either fly over top of flowers to make them bloom, or fly over grass when lit-up to make it glow, sometimes having to hover around a lake or another object to make them light-up. That’s it, that’s what the entire game is.

What makes Flower so special is how easy it is to get the hang of. Right off the bat, controlling the wind is simple, and what you have to do next is just as easy as flying over the next flower. Even though the game seems thin on the outside, if you get right into the game, you can find a bunch of stuff that’s actually pretty cool. For example, one level has you blooming flowers to heal a bunch of rock formations. Once you heal once of the rock formations, and you fly over it, you can them paint the grass with the colour of the rock you healed. Flower reminds my a lot of Prince of Persia and Okami; the worlds are often grey and uncoloured, but once you bloom enough flowers, the world comes to life.

Though there are only 5 levels (6 technically) in total, each level is a blast to play. You’ll start out small with a generic level filled with hills and hills of grass, but once you get further down the road, you’ll get to more intriguing levels. Some will have you just blooming flowers to get to different areas of a level, while some have you blooming flowers around certain items as they come back to life from their almost undead state. Every stage of Flower feels different, even if there’s only a few of them; they’re all worth playing.

One thing that you will never know, is what the hell the whole point of the game is. Sure, controlling the wind and blooming flowers is fun, but the majority of the game doesn’t make any sense other than being a laid-back experience. Flower is a game that you can enjoy no matter who you are; straight, gay, man, women, grandma, grandpa, everyone can enjoy Flower, it’s a wonderful experience. The controls are simple, the visuals are clear and straight-forward, and you’ll never get stuck on what to do next. It’s really something to behold.

Flower likes to make you think you suck. Every time you want to go into a level, the flower pot is sitting on a window sill looking out to a boring and dirty city with no colour what-so-ever. Primarily the stages are only dreams of the one that’s looking at the flowers. Every stage begins with a little cutscenes showing how much it sucks living in the city and how cool it is to be in the middle of nowhere blooming flowers. Sometimes I just look around inside of a level just thinking how cool it would be to be there at that very moment, even though it will never happen.

This is extremely evident since the game is so absolutely gorgeous. Every stage is absolutely filled with single blades of grass, and I mean, single blades of grass; it’s mind boggling, it really is. Not only is the game just awesome in that regard, but it also helps since Flower is also one of the most colourful games I have ever played as well. Flying around a stage has never been so breathtaking like it is in Flower, and it really is a one of a kind game that everyone will appreciate visually. It’s also one of the very best looking games I’ve seen this generation, and since it’s only a downloadable game, it really is amazing.

While the visuals are fantastic, so is the audio to boot. The peaceful music that plays in the background of each stage suits the mood perfect, and the subtle transitions to each part of each stage is flawless. The score is amazing, and will sound like something out of a movie. The sound effects like the wind blowing fast and going down by the grass sounds almost as real as it gets.

There’s only a couple of gripes with Flower, but some are pretty major. The game never really tells you what you’re doing, all it does is give you subtle visual cues, but some of the later levels don’t make any sense of what you’re supposed to be doing, which can get annoying. This can be especially frustrating for someone that doesn’t play games very much. Flower is also incredibly short, almost embarrassingly short for what year of gaming we’re in today. Sure, it’s forgivable considering every other part of the game is fantastic, but that doesn’t change the fact that you’ll play through the game in less than 3 hours, and up to 5 or 6 to get the rest of the trophies you missed.

So if you’re contemplating of whether to get Flower or not, get the game, absolutely purchase Flower. Flower may be considered a “non-game” by many people out there, but it doesn’t change the fact that the game is fantastic, and should not be missed. Flower has incredible graphics, it’s fun to play, and its very nice on the ears. You can either play it for the trophies, or you can play it for the experience, it’s really up to you. But if it was up to me, I would definitely not hesitate, and I would buy Flower right away. It’s the best game I’ve played this year, by far, and cannot be recommended enough.

I'm definitely buying this when I get my wireless router up and running again. I was a bit on the fence about this game at first, but you've made up my mind. Thanks for the great review.
