Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned DLC

    Posted Image

    Developer: Rockstar North
    Publisher: Rockstar Games
    Release Date: February 17th, 2009
    Genre: Action Adventure
    Platform: Xbox 360
    Rating: M - Mature

Lots of people already know that I believe that Grand Theft Auto IV, though still an amazing game, is one of the most over rated games of all time. GTA IV is one of the very best Xbox 360 games you can buy, but it doesn’t change the fact that the game is not perfect, and should never be rated 10 out of 10 in any sort of way. Microsoft cooked up a deal with Rock Star to have the exclusivity for the 1st downloadable pack for GTA IV: The Lost and Damned. But is the 1,600 MS point DLC really worth it? Is there enough content to justify a download of 1.4 Gigs of data? Yes, absolutely.

If you’re thinking you’re not getting much content with the Lost and Damned, get a reality check, because TLAD is a freaking beast of a pack. You get a normal story that takes place during the same time as the event of the normal GTA IV story, while you play as a Biker named Johnny Klebitz, as you go through many highs and lows of being the Vice President of a Biker Gang called The Lost. The story is no slouch either, a normal person will take an average of 7 to 10 hours to complete, which is a around a third, or a quarter the length of the normal game. You also get a bunch of Bike racer, gang wars, 50 seagulls to shoot, tons of new weapons, new vehicles, new TV channels & internet websites, and new multiplayer modes; you definitely get your money’s worth.

The story is surprisingly very interesting. The Lost Biker gang may not be a gang to root for or anything, but you’ll always want to know what happens to Johnny next. You start the game out by getting your boss, Billy, out of rehab. From there, tons of different mission are open to you from stealing bikes, killing people, and even saving people that Johnny loves, well, sort of loves anyways. It’s pretty awesome too because you will do missions which you did in the normal GTA IV game with Niko, but you’ll play as Johnny this time, and shows a whole different side of the story.

Gameplay-wise, there have been some tweaks as well. Since you’re in a Biker gang, you’ll be riding Motorcycles more than Cars. Rockstar has tweaked the handling of the bikes, so they’re a lot easier to drive. Remember when you would fly off your bike as Niko when you just touch an edge? You’ll barely ever fall off your Bike as Johnny, which is really helpful when you get right down to it. The shooting and combat is all the same, as well as the button configuration, but one thing I hated was it never telling you controls when you first start out. When I started playing TLAD, I was on a long streak of not playing GTA IV, so I forgot how to shoot and stuff, and in TLAD, it never tells you.

When playing missions, you’ll mostly be accompanied by your gang. If certain members of your gang survives the battles, they gain more experience for certain skills like accuracy and toughness (maximum health). If a member keeps surviving battles, he’ll be tougher and tougher to kill in the long-run. You can also call backup from Clay and Terry, and though they’re terrible at driving, they can help you a lot when fighting gangs in a gang war. When Clay and Terry’s toughness gets to 100%, you get a 70 point achievement too, which is pretty cool.

The new items like vehicles and guns are awesome additions. The weapons like the automatic pistol, grenade launcher, and pipe bombs are all welcome additions, though some of them, like the Pipe Bombs, are hard to fight with. The new Bikes are pretty cool too. One of them is a new type of crotch-rocket that goes super-fast, but is very difficult to control.

The presentation is also top-notch, just like the normal GTA IV game. The visuals, while sometimes buggy and glitchy, still looks awesome. The cutscenes especially are absolutely flawless; the animations from the arms, legs, and mouths look real, and the dialog is like something out of a movie. The Lost and Damned is presented as an ugly and dirty pack, so the menus and HUB will be covered in grease and dirt, as well as a grain filter over the screen to make the clean Liberty City look like a dirty town. Fortunately, the grain filter can be turned off, and when done, it makes the game look so much better. The menus are nearly identical, though the font is more difficult to read, especially when using the cell-phone.

The Lost and Damned take place in Liberty City, like GTA IV, but instead of starting in Brooker and unlocking more islands as you progress, you start in Alderney, and the entire city is open right off the bat, but most of the missions take place in either Alderney, or Algonquin. Though Liberty City is exactly the same, stores and shops other than Pay & Sprays and Gun Shops aren’t available to Klebitz. You’ll literally wear the same attire through the entire game.

Grand Theft Auto IV’s multiplayer makes a return in the Lost and Damned, adding a bunch of new modes, plus bringing old modes as well. You have your standard Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch, but the pack also adds modes like Chopper vs. Chopper races, seen in the main TLAD story, as well as modes that are similar to modes in the original game, but with minor tweaks to keep with the theme of the pack. I wasn’t a huge fan of the multiplayer in the original game, and non of the modes added to the Lost and Damned really made me want to keep playing the multiplayer, but they’re nice additions either way, and if you like the multiplayer, you’ll love the new additions.

One of my main gripes with the pack is that nothing can move from one game to the other. All of the new bikes, new weapons, and new music doesn't move to Niko's adventure. This may not seem like a big deal, and it isn't, but I would have loved to try and ride one of those new crotch rockets with Niko since he can't control a bike worth beans. The new weapons would've been cool to use too, since playing the original game over again will feel dated since you will use the exact same weapons.

Without a doubt, if you own GTA IV, purchase the Lost and Damned for 1,600 Microsoft Points. You get a whole new story that takes place during Niko’s adventure, as well as tons of new modes, and new things to do. The story, while sometimes feeling a bit dirty at times, is still awesome, and will make you want to plow through the game to see what happens. For $20 you get literally a third of what you would get in the original GTA IV game, plus more multiplayer modes. I absolutely cannot wait for the next chapter of GTA IV’s downloadable content, so hopefully we wont have to wait for too long for it. Purchase the Lost and Damned, it’s absolutely worth the $20.

    Couple errors I noticed.

I liked this review mainly because I can relate to your feelings towards the game. I didn't think this was the greatest game ever but by the sound of it the DLC isn't a bad purchase. I'm on the fence still about buying it mainly because I dislike buying points too often (next planned purchase was for Banjo Tooie) but I might have to. Glad to see they loaded the DLC with content and more websites, etc.

I was surprised when watching the trailer about the lack of censors on the wang. Some things apparently slip right through unnoticed and others are just blasphemy (Mothers of America groups can suck it).

    Thanks, I fixed them up.

But yeah, it's a great purchase, even if you didn't love the main game like the critics did.

EDIT: Added a paragraph that I missed.
