Fallout 3: Operation Anchorage DLC![]() Developer: Bethesda Softworks Publisher: Bethesda Softworks Release Date: January 27th, 2009 Genre: RPG Platform: Xbox 360/PC Rating: M - Mature Fallout 3 was easily one of my favorite games of all 2008, better than many games like Grand Theft Auto IV, and Gears of War 2, the two biggest games of the year. When Bethesda announced the game, they also said that they would release downloadable packs for the game, like they did with Shivering Isles for the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The first of the 3 announced packs was Operation Anchorage exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC, so no PS3 owners, you will not be able to play the downloadable packs. Operation Anchorage takes place to during the invasion of Anchorage Alaska by the Chinese, before the world was struck by Nuclear Weapons. Well, the pack doesn’t actually take place during the invasion, you play as your main character, just like previous games, and you are given a radio signal and a new place on the map to explore. Once you get to the spot, a bunch of dudes ask you to do a simulation of the invasion to unlock a door that leads to a bunch of wicked armor and weaponry. The reason why they can’t do it themselves is because they need something like your Pip Boy you carry around with you on your wrist. Once inside the simulation, the whole concept of Fallout 3 pretty much changes entirely. You would expect the game to play nearly the same, but there’s a lot of aspects of Fallout 3’s main game that are left out. For example, instead of finding items scattered around everywhere to pick them up to sell, or eat for health, you can’t pick up barely anything. The only things you can pick up are guns and other weaponry. Health is given to you by Health stations that glow bright red, and your ammo is replenished by ammo crates. If you kill an enemy, all you do is move on, you can’t search their bodies for anything. There are 4 main quests to do in Operation Anchorage, all of which are part of the main quest; there is absolutely no optional side quests besides trying to obtain all 20 hidden packages. The first mission has you take down a bunch of artillery guns that are shooting at the Americans. The next mission has you infiltrating a camp and taking out the fuel tanks inside. The quests are decent, but they take a ridiculously short time to finish. Each mission is around a half-hour, so you get around 2 hours of gameplay total, which is decent, but still lacking. Fallout 3 is all about collecting different types of items, and using them to their advantage while using the V.A.T.S. system to take out enemies. In Fallout 3, while you still gain experience from killing enemies and completing quests, you only have 3 main guns, with one type of armor for the entire thing. You will also play Op. Anchorage like a first person shooter more than an RPG. Sure, you can play it using VATS the entire time, but you will never actually feel like you’re playing the real Fallout 3 you bought on October 21st, 2008 (or whenever you played it). I actually went through Operation Anchorage without leveling up because I was already maxed out at level 20. This may not seem like a huge deal, but Operation Anchorage, even on Medium (the difficulty I played it on), it still seemed ridiculously easy. Maybe it may be a little more difficult if you weren’t maxed out, but it still seems a bit on the simple side. Most gamers that are going to be playing Operation Anchorage are probably Fallout-addicts anyways, so most will be already totally maxed out anyways. Visually, Operation Anchorage is a huge breath of fresh air for Fallout 3. If you’re sick of looking at the bland wasteland and ruined buildings that all look the same, then you’re in for a treat with Operation Anchorage, because the game has a total unique look to it, far from the normal Fallout 3. Most of your mission will be taking place on the mountains and fields of Alaska, so you will see a lot of whites and blues, and it all looks pretty good. The same voice actors return though, and the music is reused from the main game, so you wont be hearing anything new. Operation Anchorage is a gigantic disappointment, and I cannot suggest this to someone that liked the game, but wasn’t a huge fan. Sure, if you’re a Fallout 3 nut like me, buy it, you’ll probably like it, but I just don’t think it’s worth ten dollars (800 Microsoft). The pack doesn’t play nearly like the main game, there’s barely any RPG elements, the story is boring, and you only get some armor, and a new gun once you beat it. I liked the extra 100 points, that was at least decent, but I do not suggest spending ten dollars on a side quest; Operation Anchorage is not worth it.

Hmm, I was thinking about getting this. But if it for whatever reason isn't like the main game then it seems a bit pointless. |

Like I said in the review, if you're a Fallout 3 nut, then buy it, you'll probably like it. But $10 is steep for the lack of content you get. |

Hmmm, I wasn't even aware that this was released. But I've heard it's a pain to set up a Windows LIVE account, so I think I'm going to have to pass on this one. 10 bucks seems a bit pricey too, since there doesn't seem to be much exploration. As much as I love Fallout 3, I think I'm going to have to skip this. Good review, though. |

Shit, I forgot to mention that there's absolutely no exploring what-so-ever in Operation Anchorage. |

Huh? Making a Live account is a peice of piss. Just follow the instructions and it's easy. |

I'll have to check it out. I'm assuming just setting up an account is free, right? I'll have to run it by my dad, because technically it is his computer, so I have to run anything I do by him. I was apprehensive because I think I read an article or review of something that mentioned setting up a LIVE account was horrible. |
