    LK's Top 10 Games of 2008

Hey everyone, again, I have another list to unveil. This time, it's one of my top 10 games of 2008. Like 2007, 2008 was an amazing year for video games, and to pick only ten of them was a difficult task. It started out pretty well, and just picked up steam from there with games coming out week after week near the end of the year. Remember, I haven't played all of the games (I still need to play World at War and Left 4 Dead), so it may be changed in the future. If you want to see my top 10 games of 2007, click here. Here's the top 10 games of 2008:

    10) Rock Band 2

    Posted Image

    Genre: Rhythm
    System(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii
    Publisher: EA Games
    Developer: Harmonix
    Release Date: October 19th, 2008 (PS3)

    I gave it: 9.2 | They gave it: 92

Why?: Rock Band 2 was a bit of a surprise in 2008. I loved Rock Band 1 in 2007, but it didn’t seem like the original game needed any more tuning; it was already amazing. After getting my hands on the PS3 version of Rock Band 2 (I had my DLC on the PS3 from Rock Band 1, that’s why I got it on the PS3 again), and the additions to the series weren’t anything that was absolutely needed, but they were awesome additions either way. The ability to use the Rock Band 1 DLC, new online Band World Tour, as well as the ability to play it with only one player, challenges, Battle of the Bands, and a new 84 song set list are seen as necessities, when the game seemed perfect before.

    Posted Image
    The Full Band Jamming

Rock Band 2 not only added a bunch of stuff, but one thing it did do was make the game a lot harder. Most of the highest tiered Drum songs are all harder than both Run to the Hills and Wont Get Fooled Again, which are the hardest drums songs in the first Rock Band. But the upped difficulty didn’t necessarily make the game harder, it just made it fun for those who are good at the game. I also love the addition of drum solos, that work primarily the same as guitar solos, though there aren’t as many. If you loved, or even liked the past Rock Band, Rock Band 2 is a game you must own. The newest additions don’t seem like they’re absolutely needed, but after playing them, you’ll understand. Rock Band 1 was one of the favorite games of 2007, and Rock Band 2 is one of the best of 2008.

    9) World of Goo

    Posted Image

    Genre: Puzzle
    System(s): WiiWare, PC
    Publisher: 2D Boy
    Developer: 2D Boy
    Release Date: October 12th, 2008

    I gave it: 9.2 | They gave it: 94

Why?: World of Goo is one of the sleeper hits of 2008. It's only a game that you can download on WiiWare, and on the PC, and if you are a Xbox 360 guy, or a PlayStation guy, you wont be able to play this awesome game. World of Goo looks like a weird game, but the puzzles that it possesses are absolutely phenomenally designed, and you'll be impressed throughout the entire thing. The puzzles throughout the game are ingenious, the game is a ton of fun, and more importantly, it looks and sounds fantastic. The presentation has moody music, and the visuals are really well done. It's not going to blow you away by any means, but the fluid 2D animation, and the soundtrack will make you hunger for more.

    Posted Image
World of Goo's Style is Phenomenal

World of Goo, like stating in my review, starts out pretty slow and easy. You first thought will mostly be of negativity, but once you get to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th chapters, the game starts to get a lot more technical, and a lot more fun. The different physics you can play around with are just so fun. Buildings blocks as a bridge to get Goo balls across a gap couldn't have been done any better. The most interesting part of World of Goo is that the game is made by just a handful of people. It really goes to show that small games with a small budget can still be amazing titles, and this is why World of Goo is my 8th favorite game of 2008.

    8) Prince of Persia

    Posted Image

    Genre: Platformer
    System(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC
    Publisher: Ubisoft
    Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
    Release Date: December 2nd, 2008

    I gave it: 9.1 | They gave it: 84

Why?: People might think I’m crazy for putting Prince of Persia at such a high rank, but I thought Prince of Persia was an awesome game. I never ended up playing the Sand of Time franchise, and after finishing Prince of Persia for the Xbox 360, I really regret never playing them. Prince of Persia is my 3rd favorite game of 2008 because of a couple of things. First, the game was a blast to play. I know it’s cliche; a game has to be fun to be considered good, but Prince of Persia absolutely nailed every aspect of the gameplay, and I don’t give a damn how easy it is. The combat, while being basic and sometimes repetitive, is fun as hell, and I wouldn’t have changed it in any possible way.

    Posted Image
The Battles in Prince of Persia Are Epic

Not only did Prince of Persia play beautifully, but the visuals were breathtaking. The cel-shading made famous by the Wind Waker were at its full force in Prince of Persia with beautiful scenery all over the world, draw distances that look almost too real, and the animations that were smooth. The story really kept you going, and the driving force behind it all was the conversations between the Prince and Elika, your sidekick throughout the adventure. Usually they would talk about their surroundings, but other times would talk about random stuff that’s fun to listen to, especially since the voice acting was amazing. If you haven’t played Prince of Persia, I suggest doing so, because it’s an amazing title, and worthy of being my 3rd favorite game of 2008.

    7) Dead Space

    Posted Image

    Genre: Action Adventure
    System(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC
    Publisher: EA Games
    Developer: EA Redwood Shores
    Release Date: October 14th, 2008

    I gave it: 9.2 | They gave it: 89

Why?: To start off my top 10 games of 2008 was the creepiest game I played all year: Dead Space. While games like Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, and Fable took the sequel way, EA decided to go with a huge new intellectual property this year, and the result was nothing short of freaking awesome. Dead Space is an action adventure, very similar to that of Resident Evil 4, with controls that are almost identical. Dead Space put you in the shoes of Isaac Clark as him and his crew unexpectedly runs into the Necromorphs that have taken over the USG Ishimura, where they were going for routine maintenance. The game is scary as hell, and it’s not just “enemy jumps out of closet here” kind of scary, it’s just the secluded atmosphere that keeps you at the edge of your seat.

    Posted Image
    Strategic Dismemberment

The one thing that kept me coming back to Dead Space was just how fun it is. I loved playing Resident Evil 4 (it’s one of the my favorite games of all time), and Dead Space plays extremely similar with awesome action and intense moments left and right. Dead Space has a unique weapon variety, each weapon isn’t really a “weapon”, they’re actually tools that the people on the Ishimura used for mining. The Plasma Cutter (the main pistol) was used to slice pipes, but in Dead Space, they’re used for cutting aliens into 4 pieces of bloody mess. Not only was Dead Space just a fun game, the atmosphere wouldn’t have been what it was without the fantastic visuals, and moody music & sound. With all of these combined, Dead Space ended up being, no doubt, one of my favorite games of 2008. It should not be missed by anyone with an Xbox 360, Dead Space is a must-have.

    6) Fable II

    Posted Image

    Genre: RPG
    System(s): Xbox 360
    Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
    Developer: Lionhead Studios
    Release Date: October 21st, 2008

    I gave it: 9.0 | They gave it: 89

Why?: I never cared for the first Fable for the Xbox. I downloaded it to my Xbox 360 as one of the Xbox Originals they have on Xbox Live, and I didn’t find what was so good about the game. After hearing a lot of positive hype around the second game, and reading some very positive reviews (as well as winning X-Play’s game of the year), I had to get my hands on Fable II. I absolutely love Fable II, it’s an awesome game, and after rejecting it for months, I feel sorry for Lionhead Studios for not playing it earlier, it’s a really, really good game that I would suggest to any action RPG fan.

    Posted Image
Fable II’s Hero Fighting a Troll

All of the promises of the first game never really came true, but in Fable II, most of the promising for the last game come to life, and ends up being a far better sequel. Choosing different paths to take depending if you want to be good or bad really brings more variety to the game, and the decisions you make change the tide of the world of Albion. The visuals are easier on the eyes, the soundtrack is again epic, but the gameplay and how you use all your powers is really easy to use, and ends up being very satisfying. It sucks that Fable II wasn’t considered by other sites as one of the best games of 2008, but it easily is, and should not be missed by anyone with an Xbox 360.

    5) Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts

    Posted Image

    Genre: Platformer
    System(s): Xbox 360
    Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
    Developer: Rare
    Release Date: November 20th, 2008

    I gave it: 9.1 | They gave it: 79

Why?: I was really psyched about Banjo Threeie, right when I beat Gruntilda in Banjo Tooie. But when Microsoft bought Rare, everyone wondered what the hell was going to happen with the Banjo Kazooie series, was it going to come to the Xbox, or is it even going to be released at all? We were given a small glance of the game in a little teaser early in 2007, but the game never showed the light of day for quite some time after that. When Banjo Threeie was eventually shown, it wasn’t what everyone was expecting, and instead of a classic platformer, the game was shown as a vehicle combat game, and made a lot of Banjo fans angry.

    Posted Image
There’s Still Platforming, Just Not Much

I was a little hostile at first, but after I got my hands on Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts in November of 2008, I was absolutely hooked, and it ended up being one of the favorite games of 2008. What made the game so good is that it played a lot like the previous games with a HUB world where you could go to different worlds to collect more and more jiggies. The game was only different because it used a a vehicle system to do objectives like collect things, or race other characters in the world. You could build your own vehicles with the seamless creation tool, or just pick stock blue prints. Nuts and Bolts was ultimately fun, and also hilarious like the past games. I was skeptical, like most, but the end result of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts was really something to behold.

    ---

    4) Grand Theft Auto IV

    Posted Image

    Genre: Action Adventure
    System(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC
    Publisher: Take Two Interactive
    Developer: Rock Star Games
    Release Date: April 15th, 2008

    I gave it: 9.3 | They gave it: 98

Why?: Grand Theft Auto IV is easily one of the most over rated games of all time. Yes, I mean like, in the history of video games, of all time, since games were created, ever. But just because GTA is over rated, doesn’t changed the fact that the game is terrible, because it’s not even close to being bad. I fact, it’s one of the best games of 2008, over rated or not. The one aspect of the GTA series is its story, and in Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar absolutely nailed it with memorial characters, a great plot, and above all else, moral choices that really hit you with emotion.

    Posted Image
    Niko Bellic

But GTA IV wasn’t so great because of just its story, GTA IV also looked, sounded, and played really well to boot. The combat, while still clunky in many situations, was improved drastically with a cover feature seen in the most recent first person shooters. Liberty City is absolutely massive, as well as actually looking like a real New York with people walking around, cars driving, and buildings have real architectural properties to them. GTA IV was a really long game as well, it took me over 40 hours to complete the main quest, and my play time is in the 70 hour mark, which is almost unheard of with my type of play. To say GTA IV is one of the best games of all time, or one of THE best games of all time is insulting, but to say it’s one of the best games of 2008 is just fine. It’s not ridiculously good, but it’s still an awesome that should probably be played by everyone.

    3) Braid

    Posted Image

    Genre: Puzzle/Platformer
    System(s): Xbox 360, PC
    Publisher: Number None Inc.
    Developer: Number None Inc.
    Release Date: August 6th, 2008

    I gave it: 9.4 | They gave it: 93

Why?: Downloadable Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare games were a huge factor in 2008. Amazing games like Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Castle Crashers, World of Goo, and N+ all came out, and were all awesome video game. Even though the games I mentioned were all awesome, the downloadable game that stands out from the rest is my 4th favorite game of the year: Braid. Braid is a game that is deceiving. It first looks like a generic platformer, with awesome visuals. But in Braid, it’s not about jumping from platform to platform to reach the end of each stage, instead, you have to think outside the box, and solve puzzles to progress through the game.

    Posted Image
The Art in Braid is Absolutely Fantastic

It’s not only fun to solve each and every puzzle, but some of them will really put your brain to the test. All of the puzzles use time in order to be solved. Sometimes you’ll need to collect a key that has a green glow around it that will prevent it from time manipulation, you while you rewind Tim (the main character), the key will stay with him no matter where you go. Some stages the time will go forward while you move to the right, and the time will go backward if you walk to the left. All of the puzzles are there for one reason, and that’s to collect puzzle pieces which will eventually complete each puzzle painting of every world. Braid is really fun, and very clever. The visuals and the audio are moody and make the game atmospheric, but the gameplay really pushes the game over the top, and make Braid an amazing overall game.

    2) Fallout 3

    Posted Image

    Genre: RPG
    System(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC
    Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
    Developer: Bethesda Softworks
    Release Date: October 28th, 2008

    I gave it: 9.6 | They gave it: 93

Why?: I never ended up playing any of the earlier Fallout games for the PC. Not only did I not have a good PC that could play them back in the day, but I also had no idea they even existed. When I learned about Fallout 3 and how it would be made by Bethesda, the makers as my 2006 favorite game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I could help but get excited for another amazing RPG. Fallout 3 ended up being exactly what I thought it was going to be: Oblivion, but with guns, and in a new modern era. But it’s not only a game like Oblivion, which is amazing in its own right, but Fallout 3 does a lot of stuff better that Oblivion didn’t do so well.

    Posted Image
This is What Post-Apocalyptic Washington D.C. Looks Like

Fallout 3 took place in a post-apocalyptic Washington D.C., and what is portrayed in Fallout 3 looks fantastic. You can see the Washington Monument, and half of the White House still standing. All of the Metro Stations are used to get from area to area in the D.C. ruins, while the rest of the city is a barren wasteland scattered with burning buildings, and raiders looking for fun. The story is awesome, pitting you in the shoes of a young lad who’s mother dies from childbirth, and from there your dad escapes the vault you grew up in, and you most leave the fault to find your father in the ruins of D.C. All of these amazing parts put together really brought the game together as my second-favorite game of 2008, and it shouldn’t be missed by an RPG fan.

    1) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

    Posted Image

    Genre: Action Adventure
    System(s): PlayStation 3
    Publisher: Konami
    Developer: Konami Productions
    Release Date: June 12th, 2008

    I gave it: 9.8 | They gave it: 94

Why?: Before Metal Gear Solid 4, the Metal Gear Solid franchise was getting a bit stale. By the time of MGS3: Snake Eater, people were getting fed up with the camera, they were getting tired of the dated combat, and the series was getting more and more confusing as time went on. Metal Gear Solid 4 finally tied up most of the loose ends the other games left behind, especially the Sons of Liberty stuff, and still ended up being a fantastic game despite the game’s main draw. And that’s the main reason why Metal Gear Solid 4 is easily the best game of 2008, it mixed flawless gameplay that is finally brought into the modern era with enhanced controls, and fluid chapters.

    Posted Image
    War. Has. Changed.

Metal Gear Solid pushed the PS3 to almost an unreachable limit; the game was long, the cutscenes were life-like, the the entire game is one of the best looking games ever. You could play the game as a shooter, shooting every enemy in your way, or you can go through it classically, trying not to get alerted by enemies. The story finally came to a close in an epic fashion that probably couldn’t have been any better. Guns of the Patriots is exactly what the Metal Gear Solid franchise needed to close it out, and the result is nothing more than absolutely mesmerizingly fantastic. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots should easily go down as one of the very best games ever created, and is my favorite game of 2008.

    Honorable Mentions:

    Gears of War 2 (X360)

    Posted Image

    I gave it: 9.3 | They gave it: 93

Why Not?: Gears of War 2 was an awesome sequel to one of my favorite games of 2006. It was however, a disappointment in many respects, making it unworthy of a spot in the top ten. It had a better story than the first, but the way you went through the missions in the campaign was really confusing, and was ended by one of the easiest boss fights of all time. The online modes were sometimes better, but mostly worst. It may sound like I’m trashing the game quite a bit, but it was still an amazing game. The soundtrack was spectacular once again, and the visuals are still some of the best ever. Though it’s not one of the top 10 games of 2008, every Xbox 360 owner should still pick this one up ASAP.

    LittleBigPlanet (PS3)

    Posted Image

    I gave it: 9.0 | They gave it: 95

Why Not?: LittleBigPlanet was one of the Sony's major games of 2008, and though it was a great game (I gave it a 9.0), it just wasn't good enough to get on the top 10. LittleBigPlanet is a great platformer, the main story was fun, and unlocking as much extra content as you could was a major plus. The one great thing about LittleBigPlanet that made it so special was its level creator and building your own custom levels, just like Media Molecule did with the main story. The sometimes lackluster controls, and the real physics made the single player sort of weak, but even looking past these made you appreciate LittleBigPlanet for what it is.

    Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)

    Posted Image

    I gave it: 9.1 | They gave it: 93

Why Not?: Nintendo’s biggest title of the year just fell short of the top 10 lists for a long list of reasons. The biggest reason was because it was a major disappointment overall. It had a great cast of characters, as well as many different modes to play, but the fact that they took out lots of gameplay elements that made Melee so great ruined the competitive aspect. The WiFi connectivity was also lacking with games taking forever to load, and the games being ridiculously laggy. Brawl wasn’t horrible though, not even close actually. Brawl did a lot of things right, like the amazing soundtrack. Some may argue that it’s a compilation soundtrack so it shouldn’t count, but it’s still one of its pluses. It’s also still fun to play, which that alone is one of the reasons to play it. It’s a Smash Bros. game at heart, but it wasn’t even close to what I was expecting.

    Okami (Wii)

    Posted Image

    I gave it: 9.2 | They gave it: 90

Why Not?: I was never a really huge Okami fan when I read that it was coming to the Wii, but after the PS2 version of the game got a near perfect score on Famitu (39/40) and winning IGN’s 2006 game of the year, I knew that I had to try it when it got to the Wii. As I quickly found out, Okami is a must have, on the PS2 or the Wii, it’s just simply amazing. The game has amazing cel-shaded graphics that looks like a painting come to life, as well as the gameplay elements that put the Legend of Zelda series on the map. Okami would have easily been in the top 5 if it wasn’t for the fact that the game is a port of the PS2 game that came out in 2006. Okami is no doubt a masterpiece, but for that reason alone it will only stay in the Honorable Mentions category of 2008.

This game is great, when i first played this i was like wow this looks great and then the further we got in the game the more light we turned off in the house until it was as dark as we could get it. It just help add to the creepy feeling you get while playing this game. My sister even played this game and usually with game like this she would rather watch but this one she just had to get her turn playing.

From what i've played, I didn't like GTA 4 but it does sound pretty good. What pissed me off was that it got game of the year on ps3, xbox 360 and game of the year across all systems at gametrailers.com.
