LK’s Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2009 Welcome all to my top 10 most anticipated games of 2009. 2008 was a great year for games, though it had it’s over rated games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Gears of War 2, it still had instant classics like Metal Gear Solid 4, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, and Fallout 3. Stay tuned for my Top 10 Games of 2008 List in the future, but for now look at my list of 2009 most anticipated games, it’s looking to be a beast of a year once again. 10) Halo 3: ODST ![]() Genre: First Person Shooter System(s): Xbox 360 Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios Developer: Bungie Release Date: Q3 2009 Why?: To start off my list of my most anticipated games of 2009, here is Halo 3: ODST at my number 10 spot. Halo 3 was a freaking awesome game. The online component was simply amazing, one of the best on a console game to date. And while the online modes were really fun, the single player of Halo 3 was, well, not very fun. Halo 3: ODST is supposedly an entirely different story, with an entirely different character. If ODST can be anything better than Halo 3, in terms of single player campaign, then I can’t freaking wait. The one major question mark with Halo 3: ODST is if it’s going to have an online component. Will it have competitive multiplayer? Will it have online co-op with up to four people? Hopefully it will, but if the game is separate, but why not just make the campaign one giant download for Halo 3? Argh, I guess we’ll find out in months to come before the game’s release in Q3 2009, but hopefully it’ll end up being fun. If it has the same great gameplay Halo 3 had, then I don’t see why it couldn’t be amazing. --- 9) MadWorld ![]() Genre: Action Adventure System(s): Nintendo Wii Publisher: SEGA Developer: Platinum Games Release Date: March 2009 Why?: Ah, good ol’ MadWorld, the only Wii game on my list. OMG SPOILERZ!!!11!! It’s pretty sad 2008 was one of the worst years in Nintendo’s history, well, game quality-wise anyways. Brawl was the only really good game that I really liked, World of Goo is over rated, Mario Kart Wii was not very fun, Animal Crossing is the DS game with higher resolution, No More Heroes was just plain terrible, and Boom Blox was a disappointment. 2009 is looking a lot better for the Wii. While 2008 had no Mario or Zelda games, 2009 may see one, as well as 3rd party titles like the Conduit, and this game, MadWorld. MadWorld is one of the most stylized game I’ve ever seen; it’s all black-and-white with bright-red blood, with no other colours. It may be a huge risk, but if it comes together, it may be one of the best artistic games of all time. MadWorld also looks pretty fun, you play as this monster of something, and he’s put into a game show where he has to killer enemies a certain way like throwing them or stabbing them with a street sign. Not much is known of the game, let’s just hope the game isn’t full of waggle. --- 8) Killzone 2 ![]() Genre: First Person Shooter System(s): PlayStation 3 Publisher: SCEA Developer: Guerrilla Games Release Date: February 27th, 2009 Why?: Sony’s track record in the Killzone franchise is simply not very good. I played the first Killzone for the PS2. The single player sucked, like, a lot. Then I couldn’t get onto the online multiplayer because it took up too much space on a memory card. Killzone: Liberation for the PSP is supposedly pretty good, but Sony was hyping up this franchise like it was going to be something totally amazing, and both games didn’t live up to them. But here’s comes another, and in the form of Killzone 2 for the PlayStation 3. And Killzone 2 simply looks absolutely fantastic. The visuals alone make me shiver, it’s easily one of the best looking games this generation, and though it looks like most PC FPS games on the market, it’s a giant leap forward on the console side of things. The gameplay may not blow anyone away, but the fact that the game is very cinematic with events happening all over the place like missiles being dropped behind you, while another group of guys are breaking a door open, then you see a plane fly over top of you dropping more enemies off. Killzone 2 just look really, really good. Hopefully Sony wont drop the ball with this one either, I’m really looking forward to it, and I don’t want it to be like the first one. --- 7) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves ![]() Genre: Action Adventure System(s): PlayStation 3 Publisher: SCEA Developer: Naughty Dog Inc. Release Date: TBA 2009 Why?: 2007 is my favorite year of all time for video games. It had tons of amazing titles like Super Mario Galaxy, Mass Effect, BioShock, Call of Duty 4, Phantom Hourglass, and God of War II, but a game that 2007 had that was overlooked by a lot of people was, and still is, one of the best PlayStation 3 games to date. That game is Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. I gave the game a 8.9, but technically isn’t a AAA game, but I feel it is. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the second game in the Uncharted franchise, and it looks like it’ll definitely be a 2009 release. What made Uncharted 1 so good was its fluent flow. You’ll be running along, jumping from rock to rock, then a bunch of enemies will show up. After you kill all of them, you go for another stretch of climbing, with cutscenes usually in between to keep you updated on the story. The climbing felt so natural, and the shooting was superb. The game was intense, and the story was awesome as well as being funny to boot. Hopefully Uncharted 2: Among Thieves can be a great sequel the first game definitely deserves. The only things I could think of fixing is the amount of enemies per section, and maybe a little less traps that unexpectedly kill you that were pretty annoying. --- 6) Call of Duty 5?: Modern Warfare 2? (whatever) ![]() Genre: First Person Shooter System(s): Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3 Publisher: Activision Developer: Infinity Ward Release Date: TBA 2009 Why?: Again, a game that may come out in 2009, but if it does, it’s no doubt going to be amazing. Modern Warfare’s online was some of the best I have ever played, even better than that of Halo 3, and if Infinity Ward can push a lengthier single player campaign, as well as some improved difficulty balancing (I hated how there was 5 grenades thrown at me every 3 god damn seconds), then the next Modern Warfare is going to be a massive hit. Call of Duty 4’s single player was really impressive. The set piece moments were intense, and the story was well done, but some of the moments were so frustratingly difficult, it took what was, and made it a chore. Hopefully in Modern Warfare 2 the difficulty is balanced, and enemies don’t just bombard you with 70 billion grenades at one time, and make the Veteran difficult doable. I already know that the multiplayer is going to be awesome, so if they can make the single player more entertaining, then Modern Warfare 2 is going to be freaking awesome. --- 5) God of War III ![]() Genre: Action Adventure System(s): PlayStation 3 Publisher: SCEA Developer: SCEA Santa Monica Release Date: TBA 2009 Why?: Not only is God of War III supposedly going to be one of the best looking games ever, but realizing the past 2 God of War games for the PS2 were also fun as hell, God of War III in no doubt going to be awesome. The God of War games took the beat-em-up genre to a whole new level with tons of enemy varieties, tons of puzzles to break up the action, and the length of the game was something to behold. The God of War games were some of the very best on the PS2, and if God of War III can live up to the expectations, then it may be the best PS3 ever to be released. Seeing what God of War I & II did on the PlayStation 2, God of War III should push the most powerful system on the market to its limits. If it does, not only can God of War III be a long game, but it can also look amazing, while sounding awesome as well. If you already haven’t figured it out, God of War III is going to be a must buy game in 2009. --- 4) Mass Effect 2 ![]() Genre: RPG System(s): Xbox 360, PC Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios Developer: BioWare Release Date: TBA Why?: Again, another sequel that may not make it out in 2009, but Mass Effect 2 will be nothing short of spectacular once again. The original Mass Effect game in 2007 was an action-RPG set in a believable universe filled with aliens, and other races joining together to take down Saren, the evil villain of the game. Mass Effect introduced an unbelievable dialog tree system that revolutionized how you should put dialog into a game. Mass Effect will hopefully go beyond this, and make everything even better than before. Imagine upgraded visuals, the story after the events of the first Mass Effect, and better combat? Mass Effect 2 could be a huge game in 2009, and ultimately a potential GOTY candidate. BioWare is known for making quality products like the first 2 Knights of the Old Republic, as well as Jade Empire, but Mass Effect is considered their best achievement so far, and Mass Effect 2 should not only be on par with the original, but it should ultimately be better. If you haven’t tried the first Mass Effect, I suggest playing it, it’s a great RPG, it has satisfying combat, as well as an unbelievable story. I know a lot of time and effort will go into this game, so I’m not expecting it in 2009, but I can only hope. --- 3) New Team ICO Project ![]() Genre: Who knows? System(s): PlayStation 3 Publisher: SCEA Developer: Team ICO Release Date: TBA Why?: ICO, for the PlayStation 2 in 2001 was an absolute amazing masterpiece. Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2 in 2005, was even better. Both were made by the same Sony development team called Team ICO. A screenshot was revealed around a year or so ago, the image above, and not only does that ONE screenshot look awesome, but that screenshot alone shows the tone of each of the game, and what the tone of the next game they make will be like. I absolutely loved ICO, adored Shadow of the Colossus, and this team is capable of making a ridiculously good game, and I can’t wait to see what it is. Imagine what ICO or Shadow of the Colossus would’ve looked like in HD on the PlayStation 3? Amazing, absolutely amazing, and I have no doubt in my mind that ICO 3, or whatever it’s going to be called, is going to be one of the best looking games on the PS3. Both ICO and SOTC pushed the PS2 almost beyond its limit, and they looked amazing. ICO 3 may push the PS3 to its limit, and the result will, yes, WILL be nothing short of spectacular. I will bet right now that ICO 3 will end up being one of 20 favorite games of all time, I have that much confidence in the game. --- 2) BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams ![]() Genre: First Person Shooter System(s): Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3 Publisher: Take Two Games Developer: 2K Games Release Date: TBA 2009 Why?: BioShock in 2007 was, and still is, one of my favorite games of all time. Recently announced exclusively on the PS3 version of BioShock, BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams is a reality, and one of most anticipated games, of not just this year, but one of my most anticipated games of all time. If the 2K development team can do what Irrational games did in 2007, BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams can be the (pun intended) wet dream I’ve been waiting for, since the release of the original BioShock. There’s not much anyone knows about BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams at this moment, but if it’s ANYTHING like the original, it going to be awesome. If we saw some more decision making, more story development of the city of Rapture, and the origin of both Andrew Ryan, and Fontaine, it would not only make the game more interesting, but it would make it far more awesome. Imagine playing as Andrew Ryan? Or playing inside of Rapture while it’s falling apart? Argh, that’d be so freaking awesome. --- 1) Resident Evil 5 ![]() Genre: Action Adventure System(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 Publisher: Capcom Developer: Capcom Production Studio 4 Release Date: March 13th, 2009 Why?: Like 2008, Resident Evil 5 will once again be my most anticipated game of the year. At least we actually know that the game is coming out in 2009, and it’s actually not very far away. Resident Evil 4 will always be remembered for such an extraordinary game, while also being remembered for turning the Resident Evil franchise upside down, but actually turning the franchise right side up. Resident Evil 5 looks to carry on with the same formula of Resident Evil 4 only with better controls, more appealing visuals, and a whole new story featuring Chris Redfield, the protagonist of other Resident Evil games such as the first Resident Evil, and the remake of said game, Resident Evil Remake for the Gamecube. What I’ve seen of the game thus far, it’s coming along quite nicely, though I have to play the demo myself to actually see how the game feels in your hands. The controls seem to be a bit better, but I still would rather be able to walk while aiming. The co-op play is a nice addition, but if it’s an online-only affair, I’ll be pissed. The menu is now one-block items like Resident Evil 2 and 3 instead of playing Tetris every time you want to collect an item, though I actually liked the RE4 menu system. Resident Evil 5 is also said to be harder than past Resident Evil games, but I hope that doesn’t just mean frustratingly more difficult. I’ve been waiting for a next-gen Resident Evil game for a very long time, and we’ll finally get it on March 13th, 2009, and I cannot wait. Edited by LK, Jan 24 2009, 09:19 AM.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 looks promising, and it's nice they didn't call it Call of duty 6. The box art for Killzone looks so...badass. Sometimes I wish I had a PS3. |
