Knytt Stories: Developer/Creator: Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren Systems: Windows XP, 2000, and later versions of Windows. Nifflas' Site (includes other of Nifflas' games) I'm going to start with this: Knytt Stories is a freeware game and as such, it won't be rated as if it cost any money to purchase (because it doesn't). First off, the game is divided into levels called "Stories" where you must complete the level in traditional platforming ways. The goal is always to reach the end point, but there are a huge variety of levels (some linear, some maze-like, some action oriented, and some just free roaming). With that in mind, it is impossible to rate this as a regular game. Remember that. Once I installed the file, I immediately played the one level included with the game. It was vibrant, fun, and challenging. But it was short. After downloading multiple worlds and playing them, I became transfixed within the game. The levels are all different. Some contained many platforming elements (jumping, dodging, and timing) some contained many enemies, and some were just ambient free roaming areas. But they were all two dimensional. ![]() Before I critic, here's a warning: If you cannot play a game with rather simple graphics, then don't bother reading this review. Now to the critic: One thing you notice as soon as you start the game is the variety. Mentioned before, this game has no end to the number of possible levels. And included within the game is a Level Editor (described later), making the number of levels literally infinite. Another notable aspect is the entire feel of the game. The game just feels calming regardless of the situation. Gameplay/Editor: Once you get into the game, you notice that there are many power ups you can use to overcome obstacles. In fact, gameplay is so varied that it is near impossible to rate that. I'll rate the use of the editor itself. First off, the editor is simple. ![]() As you can see above, it is fairly easy to use for those not wanting to invest too much time. However, you can also import your own sprites, sounds, and weapons. (I know someone working on a Mario game with Knytt Stories). So it's easy to learn yet versatile, allowing almost any type of platforming to be created. The levels themselves are usually fun to play (provided the creator did a good job, which most do). And you can download additional levels from the site that were created by Nifflas or other users (you can submit some too): More levels Due to the variety of levels, it's impossible to give them all a rating. Most are similar though. They usually contain multiple Metroid-Like paths were you dodge enemies, get power ups (including a double jump, a floaty jump, a wall climber, an umbrella, and even an illusion) and usually get keys to open doors. Then there is usually one final stretch before the end. This is the norm, but some levels include cut scenes, villages, houses, and puzzles. These are a blast to play and usually may take anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours to complete one. (Although there may be one that's hours long). There are save points scattered about so you can continue at any time (for those longer levels). Now for the bad points: The editor lacks any sort of currency, so there are no purchasable items, which may disappoint some. Also, the editor lacks a health system, so one hit kills the player. Both of these are possible to change (albeit, you'll need to know the proper codes and probably ask Nifflas) Re playability: Near infinite possibilities means tons of hours playing. Simple as that. ![]() ![]() Graphics/Audio: Visually the game (while simple) is stunning. The levels are just pretty. Some look ambient, others look like a drawing: ![]() Musically, the game is amazing. The music can range from classical to techno to mostly ambient. You can also import your own songs (via the game's folder). Overall: Great game, infinite variety, and incredibly great visuals make this game my favorite Freeware game and possibly my favorite 2D platformer. 95%/100% [This review may not be finished, I might add some parts later, but the score won't change. Comments, critic, and advice would be appreciated ]Edited by darklight, Jan 20 2009, 12:25 AM.

If I had the time ![]() Great review on a great game. I recommend watching this design tour by Wolfire blog about Knytt stories, and you can tell how much detail went into this. |

Thanks, although I could have been more detailed (didn't want to ramble on too much though) Also, thanks for the link, great video, it really shows the variety of the levels. I still love this game after months of playing @King Leon: There are scarce PC reviews here, which is why I rated a PC game (also, the game is pure fun) My next review will be a Wii game though, after I finally finish Super Paper Mario (and unlock many secrets) I'm hoping to be more detailed in that review, I had to be very unspecific with the Knytt Stories review because the game is so difficult to review or describe.
