    God of War

    Developer: SCEA
    Publisher: SCEA
    Release Date: March 22nd, 2005
    Genre: Action Adventure
    Platform: PlayStation 2
    Rating: M - Mature

2005 was an awesome year, and an especially great year for video games. Not only was it a prime year for the generation of the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube, but it was also the launch year of the Xbox 360. The games that came out were just amazing games after amazing game, with Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, and God of War. Many outlets have given God of War the best title of all, the game of 2005, and though I disagree with the award, I agree that the game is a contender, and is an amazing game overall. But the biggest question above all else is, why? Why is it a good game? This review is here to explain.

God of War is a new IP from Sony Computer Entertainment America from their Sonta Monica studios. The game revolves around Kratos, a warrior torn apart from his traitorous past, relies on killing himself to rid him of all of his suffering he’s had to endure. But before Kratos hits the ground from a suicidal jump from a cliff, you get to play what resulted in him ridding himself from life. The story begins bleak, but as you play through the game, the story twists and turns into shape and begins to make sense around half-way through. God of War is set in a mythical time of the world where battles are brewing over colonies, and Gods rule the earth. The ancient Greek mythology works really well, it tells a great tale that you’ll feel fits the game too perfect, and ends up being an extremely interesting story.

One of the great parts of the story are the pre-rendered cutscenes that take place throughout. These cutscenes aren’t your normal story telling, these cutscenes are some serious business. First of all, they look amazing. Even though they’re pre-rendered, the clarity of the visuals and the look of them are just awesome looking. There are also some pretty neat comic book effects that show drawings of warriors, or character while having some sort of significants to the story, that look pretty neat and unique to the style of game. The cutscenes are also very gruesome, the blood fills the screen, Kratos’ blades are covered in it, and the game revolves around brutality. They tell the story like it supposed to, and after a hefty amount of gameplay, it’s nice to see some awesome scenes to calm your heart-rate down a bit.

God of War is all about production values. The game was put in the right hands, and it turned out amazing in the end. The story is told throughout with great dialog with awesome voice acting, and amazing cutscenes. The game wouldn’t come together as a production valued masterpiece without some great visuals, and God of War has some awesome graphics. The character models look great while animating fluently, especially the enemies that are designed beautifully and though aren’t original, seem good in their own way. the effects like fire, wind, battles in the background, and other effects look great and work even better. The environments are well crafted, they have a lot of life, and come to life with great textures, and rounded edges.

But the other major positive point about God of War’s production values come with its amazing soundtrack, and talented voice actors. The cutscenes, while looking great, have amazing voice work with great acting, and even better dialog. You get a real awesome sense of mythology while playing through God of War, almost like you’re getting a really kick-ass assignment in history class. God of War seems like an ambitious Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3 game, but what it comes out looking like on the PS2 is really well done. The graphics, and soundtrack both suit the needs of a great HD game in the new era of games, but God of War runs smoothly on the PS2.

God of War is primarily a beat-em-up with puzzles thrown in to make you catch your breath after a major battle. You use the square button to attack with weak but fast attack, while the triangle button is used for heavy attacks. While using these attacks, you can string together combos with each button. For example, if you press square twice, then press triangle last, Kratos will change his moves up to be more devastating, but taking more time to do it. The O button is used for grabbing enemies, and if you string that together with the attack buttons, you can get a pretty cool looking combo.

The battles can get really intense, and some of the enemies can get pretty difficult to defeat. Most enemies are your typical bad-guy, but some can be bigger than expected, and can take off a great deal of damage if you’re not careful. Luckily, Kratos has other attacking types up his mythical sleeve. Kratos can use magic to his advantage, like striking enemies with lighting, and also turning them to stone with the eyes of Medusa. If you get stuck while playing God of War, it’s most likely you aren’t using your magic to your advantage. The lighting is especially useful, since it can hit many enemies at once, and can deal massage damage.

Kratos can also use Rage of the Gods which is done by pressing both L3 and R3 together (pressing both analog sticks in at the same time). The Rage of the God lights Kratos up in this cool looking glow and he is invincible for the time being. Killing enemies raises the meter up, and when you have killed enough, Kratos is ready to unleash hell on his enemies. This state does a massive amount of damage, and would’ve been useful for boss fights, but there’s only around 3 boss fights in the game anyways. Using it against helpless enemies is really satisfying, and hopefully would be improved in the sequel.

Adding to the endless list of God of War’s good list is the ability to upgrade weapons and Kratos’ magic by killing as much enemies as possible. When an enemy is killed, red token come out of them, and this blood can then be spent on buying upgrades to your weapons which can make them stronger, and also add combos that couldn’t be done previously. Upgrading your magic is really useful as well, since you’ll need this to complete the game, on any difficult. You can also find Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers throughout the game, adding to your overall health and overall magic receptively. These don’t come naturally however, some of them are difficult to find.

God of War is a surprising lengthy game, with added content after the game is completed. The entire play through should you around 20 to 30 hours, depending on your skills, I too around 19 hours to complete the whole game, which is definitely good considering how much stuff they had to add to make it so long. The extras at the end of the game are pretty cool as well. There’s Challenge of the Gods, Boss Rush, and even some extras like scrapped enemies. God of War is definitely a hefty game, and even after all of its high points, it still manages to impress me even more.

God of War for the PlayStation 2 is simply a masterpiece. Who knew that the normal beat-em-up action adventure game could be so good, while also featuring RPG elements like powering up your weapons, as well as some pretty cool puzzles. The story is surprisingly deep, and the whole game is told with great dialog and awesome voice acting. God of War is also one of the best looking games on the PS2, with amazing cutscenes, and no slow-down at all. If you haven’t tried a God of War game before, definitely try God of War, it’s amazing.

    Hello little fella!
Great Review I first played this at my friends house and I loved it, since at the time I was into games like this e.g. DMC, Chaos Legion etc. All in all, great review and I might revisit this game if I get the chance.

Good review. I've heard of this game, but you've given the game the highest rating I've seen. Usually they're only 8.9 to 9.1.

What a nice, in-depth review of the game.

Maybe I should finally give this game a chance. It's been sitting on my shelf of games for far too long now. -_-
