With 2009 starting, I was interested in seeing the types of games that people here like. So, here's a thread where everyone can post their favorite games from 2008 AND 2007. Be sure to explain why you loved those games. Here's mine: 1. Okami Spoiler: click to toggle 97% Besides being an awesome epic legend, this classical Japanese art/game has captivated me for hours. The game itself is incredibly fun in that it's a blast just roaming the world, let alone actually fighting, solving, and drawing elements. The game world is huge, and like I said, it's fun just exploring the world. The graphics are also amazing (Japanese sumi-e inspired artwork turned 3D) The down side is that the drawing techniques are kind of hard with the Wiimote (the PS2 version of the game is easier to play because of this) 2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl 95% A collection all of your favorite Nintendo characters ready to blast each other to bits. The ultimate "fighting" game (if you call it a fighting game). The sequel to the incredible Melee proves to be the best in the series. A blast to play when with other people, as always. The down side is that the Wi-Fi is really laggy. Also, the Subspace Emissary is really repetitive after a while. 3 Super Mario Galaxy 95% A Mario adventure for the ages. Near perfectly balanced gameplay and fun level design makes this (in my opinion) the best Mario yet. It really outshines Mario64 (which was a groundbreaking game itself). The bad? The game's bosses are WAY to short lived, and there could be more features in the game (more levels, minigames, a better way to present the story besides a story book, etc) Edited by darklight, Jan 4 2009, 01:42 PM.

1. BioShock (X360, PC, PS3) [August 21st, 2007] 9.9 / 10 Only once a year, or even longer is some instances, a game like BioShock is released. What BioShock does is something totally different from what normal first person shooters do. BioShock's setting is its best asset, being in a city built under water while it's tearing apart called Rapture. Trying to survive the whole thing, while also telling a great story, is what makes BioShock so damn fantastic. The gameplay is as tight as first person shooters come, but also mixing in awesome RPG elements like upgrading weapons and tonics throughout the game. The atmosphere is nothing short of amazing, and I should just shut up so you can go and play this amazing game. 2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) [June 12th, 2008] 9.8 / 10 Metal Gear Solid 4 took all of the awesome parts of the past Metal Gear Solid games, changed them to fit the modern style of game, plus Konami added a bunch of shit that we didn't even know we wanted. You could go through the entire game shooting everyone in your site, or you could go old-school and sneak your way through. It didn't matter what you did, but it was fun either way. The story finally came to a conclusion, the boss fights were again epic, and the whole game is absolutely fantastic. The visuals were fantastic, the gameplay was flawless, and I can't say anything better about MGS4. 3. Mass Effect (X360, PC) [November 20th, 2007] 9.5 / 10 I'm not a huge fan of RPG's, but Mass Effect takes the cake of the best RPG of 2007, bare-none. The game had an incredibly deep story, with dialog trees that must have took years to make, and will set a new bar for games yet to come. The setting throughout the Milky Way was awesome, exploring uncharted planets was fun-as-hell, but playing the game was the best part about it. The game played like a third person shooter, but was covered in RPG elements like upgrading your weapons, your teammates, and everything you could think of. The classes you could choose for your character were awesome, and all 3 were fun to play as. Mix all of amazing parts of Mass Effect together, and it's easily my 3 favorite game of the past 2 years. |

My top 3... 1. Super Mario Galaxy Oh yeah! 'nuff said. 2. Animal Crossing: City Folk I love these games and this is a big improvement. 3. Metroid Prime 3 Even though I'm too lazy to play... great storyline, great graphics (sure, the Wii is only 128 bit, but still...), great gameplay. |

You didn't really address what I said, but rather repeated the same things you said in earlier posts... =\
Except it has, and I've already pointed out why.
A noob can do much better in Brawl than in Melee or 64. It's extremely easy to punish someone if you mess up in Melee or 64. Not so in Brawl. If you make a mistake, often times it doesn't really matter and you aren't punished for it by getting hit or something, because of overpowered shielding and other things.
That's the whole point of smash. You SMASH the control stick to do a rapid attack. Have you watched either SSB64's or Melee's "How to Play" videos? Both videos stress "smashing" the control stick to add emphasis to your attacks and movement.
That's in all the games. >_>
A half-second is more than enough time to get hit with an Ike FSmash, Ganondorf's Warlock Punch, or get chaingrabbed across the entire stage by Dedede.
No it doesn't. You're just fastfalling if you do that (which was also in SSB64 and Melee).
You misunderstood what I said. I didn't mean weight, I meant falling speed and floatiness. In Brawl, every character floats like they're Jigglypuff. An easy way to test this is to do Marth's SH DF-air. In Melee, it's fairly hard to do and you have to have quick hands to pull it off. In Brawl, it's ridiculously easy and any noob can do it seeing has how Marth (and all other Brawl characters) practically float in the air like they have balloons tied to their backs.
I'm all for more people playing Smash, but not to the point of where you dumb down the game and make skill less of a factor when it comes to winning. Even the best Brawl player in North America, Mew2King, said Melee is superior to Brawl when it comes to skill and other factors.
What do you mean "so what"? Are you kidding me? Sequels are supposed to ADD content, not take it away. That's like having 10 guns in one FPS game, then in the sequel only having 3.
If you don't like competitive games, yes.
SSB64 has online play that's superior in every single way. ROM hackers are also getting very close to getting Melee online as well.
No need to apologize.

KoRo KoRo KoRo?

People play all 3 smash games for different reasons Smash 64: Pro: Balance, better online play than brawl (emulation, not laggy, you can talk, chat, P2P, play with 4 people with 0 lag), Con: low amount of people, skill gap between the top players and casuals even with the balance. Inside Joke: Kirby is the best character in the game, "Matts!" Major Videos to get into the game: How to Play videos, Any match with Isai (Mevesc's channel on Youtube), Isai vs Johnny Major characters you will find in tournaments: wait, ssb64 tournaments? Melee: Pros: Quickest, Incredibly large offline tourneys wherever you are (like 45 minutes away from me was a 100+ person melee tourney), second most balanced Cons: Problem is no online and many people went over to brawl, also HUGE skill gap due to different speed of hands, most people can't break out into a tournament scene regardless of mindgame ability due to lower hand speed Main characters you will face in offline tourneys: Marth, Fox, Falco, Peach, Sheik, Jigglypuff, and Falcon Moderate use of other characters otherwise like Samus Inside Jokes: M2K, NIFOFD, M2K Major videos to get into the game: FC3 Crew Battle to see the tourney scene, Wak's how to play videos to learn the ropes, Wombo Combo or Forward (Falco) vs Isai (Falcon) to 0_0 Brawl: Pros: easy for anyone to play, Second best Online, Incredibly popular offline and online, "the smash" to play right now, Hand speed no longer an issue Cons: Unbalanced at a pro level, too slow and too easy to be as competitive as melee, Online is laggy unless you find certain people, Inside Jokes: Brawl has no combos, M2K (again), Captain Falcon for God TIer Main chars you will find in tournaments: MK, Snake, Pit, Falco, King D3, GaW, and more MK's |
|
I usually don't post here that often anymore... Find me on Steam if you wish to contact me: KoRoBeNiKi or the same name on smashboards where I am quite active I rarely play brawl, nor melee, nor smash 64 but I still know what I am talking about so if you have any questions, message me. Too busy/not caring enough I will most likely be going to Apex 2013 though so if you wish to meet me, message me. | |

You also misunderstand me when I say "heaviness". I really mean what you mean, the character's ability to stay in the air. Instead of addressing each of your points one by one, I'll just sum up quickly (it's very late for me, and I'm tired) Perhaps you and I disagree on the definition of the phrase 'dumbed down'. I don't think balancing the games characters is bad.(MetaKnight isn't 'broken', he has multiple weaknesses, so does Marth, Snake and any other 'broken' characters) I also disagree that Brawl is an inferior game just because it doesn't take many wasted years to master it. It also appears that our ideas of what makes a great game great differs. I myself value fun over any other aspect of a game. The fact remains, Brawl is pure fun while Melee became dull with the lack of a variety amongst players (nearly everyone used Falco, Marth, Sheik, or Peach). I really don't want to elaborate, since I'm guessing you can figure out what I'm getting at with my already written posts. And I don't really want to bore myself with the task of pointing out EVERYTHING that makes Brawl more fun as an actual game. I can see why some people would prefer to play Melee in competitive games. But I really still cannot see why some would say that Brawl is inferior overall to Melee. Also, sequels do not need to add more of everything, that is rubbish. Sonic games sucked after all his friends joined the games. That is a very weak point because Brawl adds more of everything that matters (characters, unlimited stages, more modes, more items, more variety in matches for once, more strategies instead of one universal one, and more fun) Oh, and by the way, if that is your mentality about games (More competitive=better) then you should stop playing Nintendo games and play another system (namely a 360) because Nintendo has further plans to make their games more fun and less frustrating. With that, I'll leave (tired of debating right now) But I thank you for providing me with an intelligent conversation (another person with the same viewpoint as you was so much less tolerable then you) Good night , and I hope we can Brawl one day. (I'll add my Brawl code to my sig eventually) |

Okay, I see. But you say that there isn't "much of a difference" between Melee's and Brawl's falling speed. But there's a huge difference, and I pointed it out with the SH DF-air example with Marth.
Such as...? The only one I can possibly think of is that he's kind of light, but that doesn't really mean much when everything else makes up for it. Metaknight wins in every single matchup against every character, tourney-wise. The only matchup that comes close, other than dittos, is Metaknight/Diddy which is like 55-45 and Metaknight/Snake which is 55-45. Metaknight has an advantage in every matchup.
I didn't say Marth was broken...
All opinion, which is irrelevant to the debate.
http://www.logicalfallacies.info/strawmanarguments.html Straw Man argument. Sonic and Brawl are completely different, you can't use that analogy. And how does Brawl have "more strategies"? In fact, I pointed out how it has LESS strategies due to the removal of Wavedashing in an earlier post. It seems like you're just completely ignoring everything I say. And Quantity =/= Quality. More doesn't always mean better, especially when over half the cast can't hold a candle to top tiers.
More competitiveness usually equates to more fun. After all, why spend all the work playing just to have someone get lucky and win (happens all the time in item matches, which is why they're banned in the tournament ruleset)? Playing with you and your friends and trying to get the Smash Ball first or grabbing the Smart Bomb before anyone else or beating all your friends at Break the Targets ALL make things more fun. How does competitiveness=frustrating? Nobody is forcing you to play competitively.
No problem. Same to you. ![]() Also, so the other posters don't BAAAAAAAAWWWW about the debate, don't quote my whole post at once unless you dissect it into smaller pieces like I do to yours.
