inb4 tl;dr, inb4 s_D, DO YOUR HOMEWORK YOU IDIOT. Everybody in this forum knows I'm not very rich. I don't have the money to buy new-fangled consoles (sans Wii), or, even if I did, the money to buy their respective games. And I presume everybody knows I'm mainly a PC gamer. I'm still a Nintendo fanboy...but until Nintendo does something amazing that will convince me to play my Wii again, I'll stay addicted to whatever PC game I'm playing now. Anyways, have this philosophy when I'm buying video games:don't buy new games. And the reasons are simple:it'll save you a whole lot of money. In today's gaming industry, a game would cost up to $50-$60. That's a pretty sizeable amount. But imagine with the same $50-$60 you spent on buying one game...you can buy 3-4, and probably more replay value than you bought with one game? Prices go down in video games over time. That's for sure. The same $50 you spent on Ghost Recon:Advanced Warfare is now $10 in an Office Depot bargain bin. Metroid Prime for Gamecube? $5 bucks now in Gamestop, even less if used. My first game console was a Gamecube, and I bought it a bit later into the Gamecube's lifespan. I remember...it was a Super Smash Bros. Melee package, and we bought 2 Wavebirds for it. It wasn't until a few months later till I got a brand new game, the one I was really excited for: Pokemon Colloseum. $50? Now it's probably $10-$15. And it wasn't worth the $50 either. I'll admit that if your really, really, REALLY excited for a game, and it must be a must-get, sure, go ahead. My newest game today is Super Smash Bros. Brawl [a bit of a let-down], and any games after that was released in 2007. If there's a really good deal on the game (say, $25 Orange Box PC, which is the best deal in video game history made even better. Got one last year for the price for Black Friday), go ahead, get it. My point is you can buy two or three used/marked-down price games with the same price you got your new game for. To put in recent terms, I was a bit interested in getting Enemy Territory:Quake Wars last year. I played the crap out of Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory. But $50 was a bit high. The next year, I find the game $5 for Black Friday in Circuit City. Even $8 in Amazon. $45...that I would have spent on other older games. It's also to note that for PC games, if there's multiplayer, you can find a popular active multiplayer game for $10 or less. Battlefield 2, released a couple years back, is $8 in Amazon. That's $8 of endless multiplayer...compared to the 5-10 hours you get with $60 single player game. So I say...fooey to newer games [Except Left 4 Dead. I hate you Valve in how much you make me want it so much]. I got Starcraft, Unreal Tournament 2004, Call of Duty 4 [well, used for $18...which is cheap compared to normal $50], my billions of freeware, to tide me over for next year, where today's games will be yesterday's games, and be cheaper than ever. I spent about $100-120 in video games. ($50 of which is Brawl), and instead of getting 2 new fangled games, I got 6-8 games just because I waited. And in those 6-8 games, I get hours and hours of entertainment. Good things come to those who wait, indeed. Edited by sniping_dreamer, Dec 7 2008, 07:08 PM.

Whether a game is worth 50 or 60 bucks is an opinion. True that it's better to just wait for a price to go down but I wouldn't mind shaving off a few years and pay the full price as soon as I can. On another note, I bought the Starcraft Battle Chest for 20 bucks and it was the best deal of my life |

In my case, it's not so much that I can't afford recent games (although don't get me wrong, I'm so poor all I can give people for Christmas is my love) as I can't actually play them. I've not got any of the current gen consoles and my computer was built in 2003. Personally, I think only buying old games is a fantastic idea, especially as far as PC gaming is concerned. It pretty much guarantees low price and decent performance. However, I will have to disagree with your point about online gaming; I find that online games get a bit stale after they've been out for ages. Not that it really affects me, since I despise online gaming. |

I somehow managed to play 740-50 hours of one of my favorite game, Soldat. All multiplayer. It was buggy and the community sucks. But I guess being in 3-4 clans over those hours doesn't really help. Even with my newer games, I sometimes just go play Soldat and drop in to say "hello" to a few regulars. The multiplayer component can get stale, yes. That's why I take regular breaks and play other games. And just completely shun my social life *sobs* Yeah the whole "computer sucks" part is a factor too. There's still older games that manages to be fun and doesn't require a computer from 200X [Fallout, Starcraft, etc.] Katz, if you can only play old games, I suggest Good Old Games (GOG.com) They have an expansive catalog of "good ol' games". Fallout for $6? I'll take it. And no DRM too. |

If there's Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II somewhere in there, consider my panties thoroughly moistened. [EDIT]Apparently there isn't. Rather keen on UT2004, though... |

It's in beta. New games are being added often. There's a voting system implemented to see what games are the most popular to upload. System Shock 2 at the top. UT2k4? Not a lot in multiplayer, sadly Onslaugh's good fun though. Edit:You can get Unreal Tournament Anthology (UT to UT2k4) for $8 bucks right now in Gogamer.com as part of their "white Friday" deals. Dunno if they ship to other countries. Edited by sniping_dreamer, Dec 7 2008, 09:48 PM.

Yes, but until Baldur's Gate gets added, my panties shall be staying bone dry. Hey, since we're on the topic of ancient RPGs, did you know that you can freely download the very first Elder Scrolls title? |

I usually try to wait for a game to get cheaper as well. Money isn't very available to college students, so I don't always have to try that hard anyway. ![]() On a semi-side note: Baldur's Gate is my favorite PC game of all time!! |

Tried; fail'd. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. If only they repackaged to a modern installer. Then again, I'm running Vista. Speaking of Oblivion, did you get any mods for it yet? I remember I got this mod that summons giant stone golem things. Good fun when summoned right in the middle of the city, as the guards are in a futile effort trying to stop a rampaging titan. And snail races! Also, expect more tl;dr editorials in the near future. Edited by sniping_dreamer, Dec 7 2008, 10:00 PM.

Oblivion mods? Yeah, that character I posted in the chat thread was actually made using a custom race, although don't get me wrong-- making it not look horrific was still a bitch to pull off. Aside from that, I just have a couple of utility mods (for example, one which gives you numerical values in facegen instead of just a vague slider) and some mods I made myself just as fixes and tweaks to things I didn't like in the unaltered game. I've been meaning to do a big one which gets rid of the annoying habit for all of the NPCs to have high-value weapons and armour at high levels, but I've not got round to it yet. I know there are some mods already out there that tackle that partially, but none of them seem to do it in the way I want it to work. |

One that basically removes level scaling? So that means when your level 60, the rats won't kill you in one shot? I should start playing Oblivion again...*sigh* |

I think we're getting way off topic here. To go back on topic: I bought plenty of games for cheap this year. Pokemon Sapphire for 10 bucks, Turok 2 for 5 bucks, Star Fox Adventures for 10 bucks, and DBZ Budokai for free I have to say that I feel so much better about that then when I bought Guitar Hero on Tour for 50. My biggest waste of money this year. After thinking this all through, I'd have to agree with s_d that waiting is better. But I'm not going to wait for something I just need to have. I think the cheapest thing I bought this year was Prey for $8. |
