The Fickle Fascination of an Everlasting God
|
Bioshock (PC Version)![]() Published by: 2K Games Developed by: 2K Boston Release Date: August 21, 2007 Genre: First-Person Shooter Platforms: PC, XBox 360, Playstation 3 To put it simply, Bioshock is one of the best games I have played in quite some time, if not ever. The driving, compelling, and often surprising story; the masterful music; the completely engrossing graphics; and the excellent gameplay all come together in perfect harmony, or at least near-perfect harmony. But, it is a harmony that only a well-trained ear will discover is imperfect. If you're tired of this analogy, please bear with me, and discover the masterpiece that is Bioshock. Story Now, as I'm sure that most of you are aware, as with most games of this caliber, I cannot give away much of the story without ruining it for you. However, I can give you a basic idea of what the story is, and I can also assure you that it is very well-written. Let me just start off with this: 1960's underwater city inhabited by mutants. If that doesn't spark an interest, you're not a gamer. The basic premise is that a man built a city under the sea, so that people could live free from fear of corruption by government, religion, or morals. Or at least that was what was supposed to happen. Soon, a corrupt businessman named Frank Fontaine began taking over Rapture, the city under the sea, and Andrew Ryan, the creator of Rapture, engaged in a bloody war with Fontaine. The splicers, or people who modified their genes so much that they went crazy, began to appear, and the city went to hell. Now you come in. As the only survivor or a plane crash, you discover Rapture and enter the city. You meet up with Atlas, who acts as your guide, and make your way through the city, discovering many plot twists and turns as you go. I cannot say anything more without ruining the story, but I can assure you one thing: it's good. As a result, I give the story of Ryan, Fontaine, Atlas, and Rapture a score of: Score: 10/10 Audio Just as a great movie is made better by a great soundtrack, so too is a great game enhance by its own soundtrack. But that's not the only good part of the audio. The sound effects enhance the game's experience and overall atmosphere but so much that you could almost play the game with no video, only audio. Almost. But we'll discuss the graphics later. Right now, my attention is devoted to the music. Eerie tunes, driving drumbeats, and contemporary 50's tunes are basically what make up Bioshock's masterful soundtrack. In one of the game's later stages, you often find yourself in the heat of battle with some light piano music or a catchy 50's pop tune playing into your ears. Let me tell you, it's awfully unsettling. However, the music isn't the only thing that will make you soil yourself. In other times, you'll walk down an empty hallway, only to have the lights fail and hear something scampering around. When the lights return, things aren't quite as they were. Quite scary. I was on the verge of tears because of some of the audio. Well... not quite, but still quite terrified. Anyway, the audio in this game is amazing, and fits perfectly. There isn't one thing I would change, earning Bioshock's sound a resounding: Score: 10/10 Graphics But what is a great soundtrack if you can't see anything? Scary, yes, as the game often proves, but quite lacking, if you ask me. Yes, yes, the graphics are pretty and all, but that's no way to rate the video. The real value of the graphics is not in their overall glamour, but rather the art style, which is a 1940s-1950s art deco style. And, I must say, Bioshock really delivers in that department. The shortwave radio portraits that appear when you receive a transmission, the clothing of the splicers, and the sculptures and paintings that appear around Rapture all support the art deco atmosphere, and look great together. But, since some of you don't look as deep, I'll look at the other aspect of the graphics: how they look. In a word: pretty. Everything is very realistic, and the fire and water effects are amazing. But, since both play a huge role in the game, I'd expect them too. Aside from those, everything else obviously looks great. However, there are a few problems with the graphics. Some of the animations of the dying, and even the dead splicers look odd. Some of the deaths don't fit with how the splicer died, and some of the dead splicers have a twitch, where a hand or leg will move endlessly. But, despite those problems, I award the graphics of Bioshock a very high score of: Score: 9.5/10 Gameplay Obviously, if this game has earned such high scores already, it won't disappoint in the gameplay department. However, there is one glaring problem in the gameplay that honestly didn't bother me too much, but was a problem with a friend I talked to. But first, let me explain the rest of the gameplay. As with other shooters, you move through the levels, completing goals, and shooting baddies. But, Bioshock adds a huge twist to the standard formula with plasmids. Plasmids allow you to rewrite your genetic code so that you can shoot electricity, fire, and other elements from your fingertips. Utilizing these plasmids is key to killing your enemies, especially the Big Daddies. When you kill a Big Daddy, a huge, metallic behemoth, you can harvest or rescue its Little Sister, a girl possessed by a supernatural force. Obviously, harvesting all the Little Sisters earns you the bad ending, which I have not earned yet, while rescuing them earns you the good ending. Either way, your earn ADAM, which allows you to purchase and upgrade your plasmids. Using these plasmids depletes your EVE, which you can find in hypodermic needles around the city. Both of these resources add an interesting aspect to the game, which I really enjoy. However, there is one problem with the gameplay, and that is repetition. The levels usually boil down to a barrier you can't pass unless you gain some tool or weapon, and you do a variety of fetch quests for said tool or weapon. However, I personally didn't mind too much, although I know some people did. Despite that, the gameplay earns a: Score: 9.5/10 In the end, Bioshock is a masterpiece. I'm already through my second playthrough, and I'm sure down the road I'll embark on a third. I highly recommend this game to everyone, especially if you like shooter that makes you think. In conclusion, I award Bioshock a score of: Overall Score: 98/100 Edited by Iggy2010, Nov 10 2008, 02:04 PM.

I'm glad I could help you, NW. And I'm glad you agree with me, LK. It feels good to have the backing of such a great reviewer. One thing that I forgot to include in my review is that the voice acting is spot-on. Whether it's Atlas, Ryan, or any of the numerous side-characters or splicers, the voice acting is great. |

Nearly flawless! Even though I can't actually think of any flaws, there's bound to be one tiny one, somewhere... |
