    The big thing about Dead Space is that it looks like a really good game, but it’s coming from EA. Sure, EA has had some great games in the past, don’t get me wrong, but a brand new IP that doesn’t evolve any gameplay elements from other games, and is not original in any shape or form doesn’t really surprise anyone because of the company behind the project. But anyone can stop being concerned, you can stop being hesitant, Dead Space may not be original, but damn, it is good. The gameplay is just right, the scare factor is awesome, and the game is tons of fun. The visuals, impressive, the sound, freaking, the voice acting, awesome. Dead Space is simply an awesome game.

    The game begins in a very intense way. You, Isaac Clark, and your crew is sent on a routine mission to the USG Ishimura, a giant space craft that rips apart parts of planets like its no one’s business. You and your crew try to contact the life on Ishimura, but have no luck, and ultimately try to land the ship on the vessel, only crashing into a mess, and just barely making it inside. While traveling through the Ishimura trying to get the power back online, you and the team find out that the Ishimura is overtaken by aliens called Necromorphs, that can slice you apart, and other Necromorphs can overtake your body entirely. From the there, the story unfolds pretty cleverly. It’s going to blow you away, but the story is well told with great voice acting, and awesome in-game cutscenes.

    One of the best things about Dead Space is the way the story is presented. Usually Isaac is away from his team members, so the other way to talk to them is by intel. When this happens, a projection of the the person’s face comes up, and you can see them talking direction to Isaac. But the amazing thing about it is that you can turn the camera and it will stay in its position, and never moving with the camera, like it’s being projected from Isaac’s view, not your own. This also happens while navigating through your inventory by pressing Y. You never are taken out of the action, so you always have to be alert.

    A lot of Dead Space takes place in real-time. There is barely any instances when you’re taken out of the action. Even when you’re watching a cutscenes, you can still move around just fine. And what also brings the presentation to a whole new level is how the game never shows any HUD (Heads-up display) on the screen. If you want to see your health, it’s on your back. Your guns (tools, actually) have the amount of ammo on the gun, and you can see where you have to go next by pressing in the right analog stick. Dead Space really stresses the no HUD, but it does seem kind of gimmicky at first, but once you get the idea of your bars and meters, you’ll have no problem.

    Dead Space is a survival horror adventure, like a Resident Evil game, and is extremely similar to Resident Evil 4. You walk forward and back while pressing up and down on the right analog stick, and you can strafe by pressing left or right. You look around with the right analog, pretty much exactly like a third-person shooter. But what make Dead Space similar to RE4 is the combat mode, and the non-combat mode. When your walking along, the face buttons do certain action like A, which is the action button, and Y which is menu. But when you hold down the Left Analog Stick, you go into an aiming mode where you can press the Right Trigger to shoot, RB to change you shot type, A to reload, X to use Stasis, and B to use Telekinesis.

    Isaac, throughout the adventure, will collect or buy a lot of different weapons, but the game likes to stress that the guns are not real guns, they’re futuristic tools. The plasma guns, the first gun you start with, for example is for planetary engineers that need to cut things like rock or pipe, vertically, or horizontally. You’ll find other useful guns like the Plasma Rifle, the Flamethrower, and the Contact Beam for tougher enemies.

    There are also some area where there is absolutely no gravity called Zero Gravity Areas, so you can aim at the ceiling, and jump to it no problem. Some of the game’s best puzzle are in these areas, but fighting enemies in these areas is a harder task then fighting them on usually ground. Some areas also have no air in them, like space. In these areas Isaac has an air meter, and if it goes down all the way, he’s a goner. Some areas are a mix of the both, and you can easily get lost trying to hurry.

    The gameplay is tight, fresh, and above all else, it works, and it works well. What makes the shooting so satisfying is that the enemies have to be decapitated when shooting them. You will never be able to survive through the whole game shooting the Necromorphs in the chest. Shooting the arms off, or the legs will usually do them justice, but sometimes the tougher enemies will take more to kill. Some will burst into more little buggers, while some will even try and blow themselves up in order to cause your death. The enemies are awesome, and scary, but there definitely is not enough of them in the game. Sure, there around 8 or 9 different Necromorphs you’ll see, with boss fights here and there, but you’ll fight a lot of the same enemies for lengthy periods of time.

    You collect items called power nodes throughout the game, and you can upgrade your weapons and other things with these. When you have some, you have to find a bench, and from there, each weapon and other item like you stasis module and suit have a upgrade grid. Some ways will take you through power and accuracy, while some will take you through ammunition, and rate of fire. You will have to use these wisely since you find barely any of them. In my first play through I got around 40 total, and I got nowhere close to upgrading all of my weapons, so I tried to use the most of my suit.

    Yes, Dead Space is scary. Enemies will burst out of vents and ceilings without future notice, and it will scare the hell out of you. You’ll die easy, and you’ll run out of ammo quickly, so you will have to be alert because the Necromorphs will fuck you up real bad. The Ishimura is also a freaky space vessel, I would be scared there if there wasn’t any bad guys. Walls are covered with cryptic messages, floors are scattered with blood, and you’ll find dead people just about everywhere. The atmospheric sound, like the soundtrack and sound effects, make the game’s spookiness what it is. The sound of Necromorphs are intimidating, the crashes of doors and other objects make you jump, and the eery tuns in the background bring it all together.

    Dead Space also looks phenomenal, technically and artistically. Every area of the Ishimura looks fantastic with blood splattered on the wall, enemies creeping through the vents, and the asteroids out the window barely missing the ship. The draw distance is massive, the enemies look scary as hell, and the whole game just shines. There are little lighting effects I noticed throughout the game, but it isn’t as noticeable as you’d think, and the upsides of the visuals overshadow the negatives anyways. The visuals are also impressive with the awesome projections with the logs and menus I explained earlier, and overall the graphics are fantastic.

    One thing that I noticed while playing through Dead Space is how it is extremely similar to BioShock. Both games had a great story with terrific voice acting, and good real-time cutscenes. BioShock was under water, and had a very atmospheric environment, while making you feel secluded. Same with Dead Space, but you were in space instead of under water. Both games have audio diaries, though they’re called Audio Logs in Dead Space. Both games are absolutely abandoned with human life, and in both games the main protagonist is trying to escape the madness. It made me wonder because EA and 2K aren’t friends, so maybe this is they’re answer to BioShock, but as much as I like Dead Space, it’s no BioShock.

    Even with all of the upsides of Dead Space, it definitely has some issues to take note. One area I really hated was when you had to jump into a cannon, and blast asteroids that were flying towards the ship. Sure, it doesn’t sound bad, the its a nice change of pace, on paper anyways. These parts (yes, there’s more than one) are ridiculously difficult, and I played the game on medium, and I can’t imagine playing it on hard. The controls with the shooting aren’t bad, the left trigger shoots the left cannon, and the right trigger shoots the right cannon, but the aiming is just plain awful. Sometimes it’ll move too quickly, while other times it’ll move too slowly. Dead Space is also pretty short. It took me 10 hours to complete the 12 chapters, but you do get a little bit of extras like a new suit for the next play through you want to do.

    Dead Space is an awesome game. The game has fantastic visuals, a very atmospheric setting with creepy music, and intimidating enemies. If you are a wuss, and you don’t like horror games, then I definitely do not suggest Dead Space to you. But if you have a sack, I definitely suggest Dead Space. The game us fun, it does have a little bits of uncertainty with the cannon parts, but pretty much everything else is just plain amazing. The length is definitely an issue for a purchase, but I believe all of the upsides of the game really outweigh the length of the game. Play Dead Space, it’s a fantastic game.

    Dead Space is one of the best action/horror games i've EVER played. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be but there was a suprise around every corner of hallways and rooms that are specifically designed just to scare the shit out of you.
