    Next stop, the Twilight Zone
So I was at Gamestop recently and was buying Blast Works when I saw Star Fox Adventures for 10 bucks.

    Publisher: Nintendo
    Developer: Rare
    Genre: Action Adventure
    Rating: Teen
    Released: September 22nd, 2002
    Players: 1 (One)
    Platforms: Nintendo Gamecube

    Presentation:

The game is presented as a Star Fox game when originally it was supposed to be a game called Dinosaur Planet. I'm not a huge fan of Star Fox games so I really don't care. However it would've been cool to see this in it's original concept. Unfortunately it would've been released on the N64 and wouldn't have all the nice pretty graphics that it found on the Gamecube. But we'll get to that.

    Graphics:

The graphics in this game are gorgeous. I'm not going to compare them to recent games because that would be unfair to a game that released over 6 years ago. The Screenshots only tell half the story of what the graphics actually are.

I love the character models for a few reasons. One is because the amazing fur details that Rare did. It really gives off the impression of actual fur instead of some orange paint on some character shaped as a fox.

The other reason is how nice they look. Watching the cut scenes really gives you a feel for the characters emotions. The characters actually show this instead of having some blank stare. You also have to check out the Dinosaurs. Those look really great too

The environments, what can I say? These are gorgeous. The game has a night and day time shift and you actually feel the mood change and the amazing changes in lighting. I also love the falling snow and the kick ass looking lava, which really pulls you into the game with all the special effects going on.

Even at the very fast racing parts, the games still manages to look extremely well.

What I don't like is how small some of the environments looked. The development shift from N64 to Gamecube left the environments feeling at N64 standard and I felt those were pretty bad compared to larger environments in other Gamecube games.

Also, the walls look like the freaking walls you can find in N64 games such as Perfect Dark. This bothered me way too much because the walls looked so bad they pulled my eyes away from the gorgeous details in the surrounding environment.

Also, since most of the game looks absolutely gorgeous, there's always some minor consequences. In this case the frame rate. The frame rate stays silky smooth through most of the game but on some of the areas connecting to, and outside of the central hub have a few frame rate skips. Most noticeably when you're walking on those nice looking mounds of grass. It's not terrible though, but I could do without.

One last complaint is I really could do without those stupid repeated cinematic parts when Fox finds something new.

    Audio:

This game has terrific voice acting. Almost all of dialogue is done through voice acting. All the characters you hear do their job terrifically. At some points you might hear them say completely unnecessary things, but hey, at least you don't have to read it.

The thing is though, most of the Dinosaurs in the central hub sound exactly the same. However, they look the same so oh well. But I would have come in there and record a bunch of different sounding voices for free if I had the chance.

I'm not a huge fan of this games' music. While the soundtrack does fit each situation nicely, I never really fell in love with. However, that doesn't mean I shouldn't give Rare credit for doing a job well done.

All the sound effects in the game are well implemented. I'm never any good at rating sound effects because I can never think of much to say about them. But everything is nice and fits their respected visual counterpart.

    Gameplay:

This game is about action-adventure and the game play well fits that. Most say it's a Zelda clone but I never play Zelda so this is completely fresh to me.

The bulk of the game play has you using a magical staff as the source of your attack powers. While this may sound gimmicky, it actually pays off. As you progress through the game, you get staff upgrades. These consist of shooting fire and spraying ice along with the normal "beat the living crap out of everything with a stick" routine. It's all well implemented and I love the idea.

The main focus of the game is to collect the Force Point Seals in order to stop the planet from falling apart. This seems kinda generic, but in this case it makes the story much more interesting.

The controls are very tight. You shift through your items and commands using the c-stick while the A button is attack, Y is switch primary staff powers, X is directly using staff powers, and R is shielding yourself. Its really a nice layout and I don't find any reason it can be hated on

Unfortunately, the aiming sucks. While trying to shoot your fire blaster, the camera zooms into a first person mode while when you try to aim, it's about as slow an old lady holding up half a mile of traffic. Speaking of slow, did I mention the speed of climbing ladders? Good god.

The combat style is..... interesting. No wait, its kinda bad. When you're near an enemy, the camera goes into this kind of annoying combat style which makes Fox moves very slow and only allows you to target one enemy at a time. On top of that, sometimes when you try to attack, the enemies shield magically appears in your way when it was clearly to the side of the enemies body. It's very annoying and pisses me off so much. However the cool cinematic effect the style of combat gives off is kind of a plus.

A cool little feature is Tricky's (your sidekick) moves. He digs up hidden items (in a location a 3 year old can find by the way) and he also does things such as melt ice with his fire breath. This seems gimmicky but to me, it's very interesting and also kinda cool.

Some other things this game has is stuff such as basic to semi-basic puzzle solving, escaping out of poison filling rooms, riding mammoths and dinosaurs, and killing the living crap out of things with a cannon.

The boss battles have a great feel to them but aren't implemented to great. Sometimes you might just do a few simple tasks such as attacking a Dino's throat from the inside and his chest from the outside.
But there is some cool boss battles, such as where you're getting chased by a giant T-Rex and you have to elecricute him, which is very challenging and frustrating but also very very cool.
The last boss battle is a pain in the ass too but I don't wanna give that away.

There is also some original Star Fox space shooting when you're flying around to other planets which is a mega-plus for fans of the series.

So the gameplay might not be the best out there but it's certainly very interesting and worth a try

    Review Summary

Presentation - 7: Not a traditional Star Fox game but Dinosaur Planet is so cool
Graphics - 9: Great graphics and fur details but some frame rate problems
Audio - 8.5: Great voice acting but lots of reused voices and I don't find the music to be that great
Gameplay - 8: Smooth controls and easy item navigation but shooting is clunky and staff power ups feel gimmicky

    Closing:

In closing, I recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a great Action-Adventure game to add to their library. If you're going to be an ignorant person and say this game isn't worth it because it's not a traditional Star Fox game, well you're missing out.

    Averaged - 8.1
    My Overall - 8.8 out of 10
