In its modern usage, the word "gendarme" refers to, most commonly at least, a member of the French paramilitary policing organisation that's charged with keeping the piece amongst the public. It's not an exclusively French thing however, Belgium, Austria, Canada, Mexico and more all have a gedarmerie of some form. Historically a gendarme was a heavy cavalryman in the French army that was primarily of noble birth. Unlike mercenaries or old feudal methods used to bolster troop numbers, gendarmes signed contracts, assuring their services. I like to go for the historical connotation. |
