On a somewhat unrelated note, has anyone read the Giver "series/companionship"? I read the three books in it, and I really, really liked all of them.

I read just about anything. I recently finished the "Faerie Wars Chronicles" series. A bit too adolescent but a fine read, I thought.

I suppose I'd suggest, The Picture of Dorian Gray, if only for all the Oscar Wilde quotes. I haven't really read much since getting out of taking English courses :P

I don't know... I have a pathological hatred of 19th century literature, even if it's written by one of the most hilariously witty people to have ever lived.

Read the script to Wilde's A Woman of No Importance once. His humour shone through in places, but everything else was remarkably boring.

How about poetry, then? I'd recommend reading Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon's works... in my opinion, World War One literature of that nature represents one of the greatest paradigm shifts in modern literature.

I read the Giver, but wasn't aware there were more involved.. So much for the amiguous ending that the teacher kept trying to make us 'solve'. >.>

What age was he when he read it? That seems to be something that affected most people I know's feeling, particularly the part..

    VVVV
..where the main protagonist(name escapes me) dreams of her being in the tub, naked, with him in there
    ^^^^

Of course, we read that in fifth.. maybe sixth grade?.., and I live in the bible belt, and some were.. hmm, not sure of the word.. but not very accepting, nonetheless.. and the funny thing, it was pretty harmless. It didn't phase me a bit, and i'm still not sure how it really phased anyone how it did.

Nope, there are two more books. There's Gathering Blue, which I read after The Giver, and finally Messenger, which I read as the last of the three. None of them make sense unless you read all three.

    Golden Compass..

Read the series last year, was well written.. but gets progressively more controversal depending on your religion or just views on religion.

Yet, even that's less concerning than that Mark Twain book cartoon thing I watched from the NF monthly chat thing a while back, and probably on par with the mormon's.. odd.. beliefs.

Ah... N-Forums-The Mystery... Personally, I think it was a tad shoddy, but loads of people liked it, so its okay...

I reckon reading books boosts writing skills, but thats just me.

    .

    I read mainly science-y books. >_>

Some books I've finished reading recently:
"The Quantum Zoo" by Marcus Chown
"On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" (or just "The Origin of Species" :P) by Charles Darwin
"The Big Bang" by some guy whose name I don't remember.

And I'm currently reading "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene. It's about superstring theory and quantum physics.

    Golden Compass

What grinds me is the fact that there was never a compass involved in the first place, the American title came from the publishers being retarded and mixing up the book's tentative title "the golden compasses", plural, with the alethiometer used in the novel.

    Rargh!

Although His Dark Materials is a damn fine read if I say so myself, even if it is for the teenage audience.

On the subject of dystopian fiction, I quite want to read a Brave New World, I've read the mainstream Orwell titles, Animal Farm and 1984 and I've got to say that Orwell's hidden messages are so ridiculously blatant, it can make reading the novels slightly tiresome. I've heard that BNW doesn't have this issue, so it should be good.

On the whole, I can't stand traditional western fantasy, orcs, goblins, elves, blargh. Tolkien did it to death as it was, we don't need another half century of the same subject matter, D:

Although, I would seriously request The Edge Chronicles series for fantasy lovers out there. It's aimed at adolescets, but it has a nice, original plot, a vibrant world and a good set of characters. It manages to have a well presented selection of different races without having to fall back on the ol' stereotypes and has a collection of fantastic accompanying artwork as well.

Also, Terry Pratchett and Robert Rankin.

I rather enjoyed The Edge Chronicles, myself. I will agree that it did seems a little young for me, but it did have a very good, original story. It was slightly confusing at times, but eventually it made sense. I'm not sure if I've read all of them, though, or even where I've left off.
