Team Fortress 2 Developer:Valve Corporation Publisher:Valve Corporation Platform:It's in The Orange Box, so PC (reviewed), 360, and PS3. Also available individually sold and downloaded in Steam How does one do a review for a multiplayer-only game? I guess we start in the basics. Team Fortress 2 is a team (duh) oriented multiplayer game. Like many other multiplayer games in the market, it revolves around two teams competing on an objective. These two opposing teams, jokingly called "RED" and "BLU" (Reliable Excavation Demolition and Builders League United, respectively), use 9 classes that have separate strenghts and weaknesses. To really start, the graphics. The words "Striking" and "creative" comes to mind. Most online FPSs today try to be either the two things: gritty realistic (Call of Duty 4, Battlefield series) or sci-fi (Halo, Battlefield 2142). Team Fortress 2 uses an art style that makes it look straight out of a cartoon. Strong silhouettes, bright cheery graphics, gives a real distinct look FAR from other FPSs in today's market. You can compare it to, say, Legend of Zelda:Wind Waker in terms of texture (not art style, mind you). Even if I'm running this in the lowest settings, it looks great, and I bet it's even better when run max. These bright vibrant graphics go great with the overall theme game. The game takes inspiration from old spy movies, using the "Evil genius lair" theme. The "superweapon" motifs in the environment is present, with the appearance of large lasers and rockets appearing near objectives. The graphics looks great and all, and, despite the cartoonish visuals, the gameplay hasn't been forgotten. The game has several match types:Capture the flag (in this case, capture the intelligence), attack and defend (the most popular), a game based on capturing control points (whichever team captures all points win), a type of territory control, and another attack and defend, except with the attacking team having to move a cart. There are 9 classes, which I will put in detail (Primary-secondary, if any-melee weapon) Heavy Weapons Guy (Heavy)-Do you like playing as the "tank" in games? A giant Russian man armed with his 200 clip Minigun "Sasha", a shotgun, and his fists, this guy clears rooms. He can take the most damage (with 200HP), has one of the strongest weapons in the game, and is largest of all classes. His large size makes him a bigger target, and is the slowest of all classes. Firing his minigun makes him even slower. Soldier-Like blowing up people from afar? A former WWII soldier, he's armed with a rocket launcher that fires strong, but slow, rockets, a shotgun, and a shovel. He's slow, but not as slow as the Heavy. He can use his rockets to rocket jump and reach higher places. You only have 4 rockets fire repeatedly; after that, a long reload time, balancing him out. However, his rockets is the best long-range projectile weapon in the game. Demoman-Like blowing up people using grenades AND setting traps? A black drunk Scottish cyclops (As he describes himself), he has a grenade launcher that reloads like the Soldier, (slow reload) but fires grenades instead that explodes with time or in impact. His other alternate weapon is a "sticky launcher", which allows him to stick 8 "stickybombs" at a time, then fire them at will with right-click. Great for ambushing, and moderately fast, but he has problems with direct combat due to grenades being very bouncy. His melee weapon is a bottle. Spy-Hey, do you like being one of those cheap bastards in games, where you sneak up on unsuspecting people, and melee them repeatedly? Look no further: The Spy is a British-James-Bonde-like class, with the ability to disguise any of the classes in the other team, and the ability to get a one hit kill with his melee weapon, the Butterfly Knife, as long as it is a back stab. He can also sap enemy Engineer buildings (more on that), disabling and eventually destroying them. The spy is all about stealth, and his butterfly knife is perfect for, say, camping snipers. The large back of the heavy is a great home for your knife. He can also have INVISIBILITY (not invincibility, mind you.) for 10 seconds, then he has to recharge it/ Problem is, once you attack (sans the Sapper), your disguise is revealed. And people can't pass you, which signifies your a spy. Sniper-Got good aim? Like screaming BOOM HEADSHOT? The sniper is an Australian sniper with a sniper rifle, a machine gun (ironically), and a machete. His shots can charge up to 100% (you just wait over time), becoming more powerful the longer it's charged. It takes 3, 4 shots to take down a full health enemy, so headshots are critical as it is a one-shot kill, and gives you 2 points instead of one. Engineer-Like playing Defense? The Engineer is a Texas-type cowboy/MIT graduate, using "metal" (weapons, ammo) to create: -A Sentry, which gets more health and firepower as you upgrade it to 3 levels (The last one being dual chainguns AND a rocket launcher), which shoots at any enemy. -A dispenser, which dispenses health/ammo to other players, and metal, to other Engineers. -A teleporter, which allows players to quickly reach the front lines, but has a long recharge time. He has a shotgun and a pistol, but he relies on his sentry (you can only build one of each) to get his kills. With moderate speed, he lacks firepower when alone. Sentries require ammo and repairing, and is a prime source of spy sapping. Medic-You like being an assist? The German medic lacks firepower, but can heal other team mates rapidly, and even temporarily buff them 150% more health (so that means when your healing a Heavy, he has 400 health max as long as your healing him). When he charges his "Ubercharge" long enough, you can unleash 10 seconds of pure invincibility to whoever your healing. That is, as long as you don't get seperated. He is also armed with a needle gun and a bonesaw. He is faster than most classes. Pyro-Pyromaniac? Like setting things on fire? The mysterious pyro, whose origin no one knows due to the gas-mask he is wearing (which also hilariously muffles his voice) is more of an ambush, using his flamethrower to deal damage over time. He is also useful for "spychecking", since spies are apparently very flammable. He is also armed with a shotgun and a Fire axe. He is about as fast as the medic. Finally, the scout-You like going to things quick? From New York City, the scout is the fastest of ANY class in the game, has the ability to double jump, and capture points faster (It counts as 2 people instead of one). However, with low health and relatively weak scattergun (shotgun), he relies on literally running around circles to stay alive. He is also armed with a pistol and a baseball bat, one of the best melee attacks in the game as it has a fast "fire" rate. After all that, to put it this way: The characters balance BEAUTIFULLY. The heavy and medic obviously makes great pairs, the demo man is used to defend capture points as well can be offensive. The spy is great for taking down pesky unsuspecting snipers taking down your team's Heavy, and the Scout is great for capping the intel. The way the characters have their own strenghts and weaknesses is one of the main highlights of the game, as each class complement each other, and each class has a counter. When your working with a great team with great teamwork, you'll have this feeling of real cooperation. The sound is great. There's no music aside from the "Spy-espionage" like music in the Main Menu, but the sound effects are superb. Rockets whizzing by, the defeaning noise of the minigun, the explosions and the blasts makes a cacophony of sound, especially on 32 player matches. Then there's the voices, which also leads me to another topic: Humor The cartoonish visuals go great with the humor of this game. Each individual class isn't a nameless trooper; they each have a personality like no other. From the Heavy's love for his minigun Sasha, to the Sniper's wiley remarks after getting headshots, to each character's taunts, it's just great to watch and listen at. The voice overs really add to this atmosphere; the heavy's deep Russian accent goes great with his taunts of "I'M COMING FOR YOU!", "WHAT SICK MEN SEND BABIES TO FIGHT!?", among tons of other lines. The scout is one of my personal favorites for his one-liners "HEY YOUR KNEECAP IS A BAT MAGNET!" or "SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR SECRET CRAP MORON" using a New York style accent and a tough attitude. Even the announcer is great; it's like one of those spy-movies, where the woman over the PA alerts of intruders or whatnot. There are problems though. Of course, being an online game, there are many a**hats that ruin the game for you, whether it's griefers, or your team being just stupid. This varies to player to player: majority of my games, people were playing to win, not for griefing, but there are some instances where I disconnected from the server because of it. There isn't a built in "Vote kick" system to boot annoying players/hackers out (it must be server mod) Some of the maps take forever just to cross the front lines, and then just die instantly from a backstab or a sniper shot, making it a bit frustrating, especially if it has long respawn times. There is a limited number of maps, but of course, custom maps fixes that. The way the scoring system works for some attack and defend maps are confusing. A low-level computer will have a tough time running this, due to the advanced graphics. No single player campaign or bots...although I don't know how can the single player campaign would work out. And, finally: The PS3 and 360 versions get no love. There are tons of moments in TF2 that you won't find in any other game, single player or not. From epic last-second captures, to destroying sentries with an ubered heavy, there are some of those moments where "HOLY CRAP, WHAT JUST HAPPENED!". Despite the shortcomings, I believe this is one of the best multiplayer online game ever, filled with strategy, humor, a great visual style, and finally, balanced gameplay. Edit:I feel like I have to edit this, as this have been written a year back, and there has been MAJOR changes to Team Fortress 2, and Valve continues to show how much it loves it's gamers, and still how much they give the finger to console players. There has been 3 (VERY soon to be 4) major updates; especially for the Medic, Heavy, Pyro, and soon Scout. These classes are at times underused and haven't been seen to their full potential. However, Valve fixed them up a bit, introducing a new "Achievements Unlock" system. Basically, you do achievements for this specific class. Once you unlocked a certain amount (I believe it's 12), the first item is unlocked; and so on for the next set to unlock the next one; and then all 3 when you unlock all achievements for that specific class. The achievements themselves are hilarious and creative. Some are simple such as "kill 50 Scouts with your Syringe". Others are hilarious as "Rasputin: In a single life, get shot, burned, bludgeoned, and receive explosive damage." They are all very creative; Valve truly created these achievements with humor in mind. These items replace another weapon, and varies with the four classes. Such as the "Backburner' for the Pyro, giving critical damage when you burn the opponent in the back. "Backburner" replaces the current flamethrower, which now has the ability to blow air, reflecting rockets, grenades, and even move opponents out of the range. Some of these items are humorous, but practical. The heavy, for example, is essentially screwed without a medic. So what did Valve do? They gave him a "Sandvich" (yes, that's spelled like that), replacing his shotgun. When used, he gains 120 HP back, taking 4 seconds to eat the Sandvich in hilarious fashion. This is not just funny, but has practical use: the heavy can just sidestep out of the heat of battle, eat a Sandvich, then get back into the fray, without having to spam "MEDIC". There are a ton of items too numerous to list, too many achievements, but all in all, Valve shows with these updates that they really do care about gameplay and balancing, and that once you buy TF2, expect a good time. Because Valve cares about you, the gamers. I heartily recommend to go here: http://teamfortress.com/ to find out all the updates and the fuss is about. Sorry for the rebump! Fantastic review of my favorite FPS. "votekick" comes from AMX Mod normally, but for TF2 it comes from Source Mod. |

This game's art reminds me of the TimeSplitters series. That's definitely a good thing. Nice review.

You mean Battlefield Heroes reminds you of Team Fortress 2. Since you can tell the art style is a complete rip-off. |

Because of the newly released Scout Update, Team Fortress 2 is half price until Friday. (28th) http://store.steampowered.com/app/440/ I HIGHLY suggest picking it up now. For $9.99, this is something you simply cannot pass up. |
