![]() Developer: Intelligent Systems Publisher:Nintendo Console:Nintendo DS Genre:Turn-based strategy Multiplayer:Yes Rating:12+ Boom! Advance Wars returns to the Nintendo DS, more strategic then ever before! But does it live up to Advance War's reputation? Or does it fall off the front line? Controls Advance Wars handles really well for both the classical and new gamer. You can select your units by merely tapping the d-pad, or you could slide the stylus across the options, with the latter being much more sleek. However, the overall choice is up to the player, and which they feel is more comfortable. You can also use "A" to open the menu, or "start" to get an aspect of the whole map. A new feature to the controls is the "L" button, which gives you a broader view of the battlefield. Luckily for strategy fans, this means you get to view the area from a far-out view and also a zoomed in view. Graphics Dark Conflict was set to have darker graphics then the original games. And it worked perfectly. The graphics are more realistic, and are much more suited to war then the previous three. It gives a great new "shine" to the game, with changes to the environment, storyline and even people. Thats right: the co's have changed too. No more boy with a over-sized spanner, or bad guy with a face so strange he looks like a Birdo: What you have are realistic characters, with less animated faces, and a more human nature. There's a man with a gun, not a boy with a spanner. Altough a few would complain about the different graphics, the majority of hardcore Advance Wars fans wouldn't mind the change. Plot The plot is much more darker too. You see, it isn't as far-fetched as Duel Strike, where you had to stop a evil country from creating big black blobs. This time its more mature. You see, after an orgy of meteorites hit Earth, they ripped oceans, covered dust into the air, and even wiped out 90% of the human race. Now its up to you (Who's called Will in the story) to command troops to give people food, as well as hope (which is shown throughout the story). The best thing about the plot is that it all makes sense, unlike previous games where at the last mission a mysterious being pops out and launches an invasion. Its a very thought out storyline, with the main character meeting others along the way like Catleia, who's has no recollection of her past, and Lin, who is Liutenant of the 12th division. Gameplay The Gameplay hasn't changed much in Dark Conflict, but there are changes in the terrain, and also the units. The Neotank has been scrapped, to make way for more new units which you'll be able to familiarize yourself with. The new units range from a motorbike (which can move far and capture cities), to a anti-tank (which is both direct and indirect, and can basically cripple tanks), to the Ship Plane (That produces war planes). Unfortunately, they chose not to remove Mega tanks, so players can still spam them while going online (which I'll explain later). However, the new anti-tank can counter these beasts, thus restoring the key element of balance required for any true strategy game. The gameplay is terrific, on both single and multiplayer parts of the game. The feeling you get from playing the game unfortunately feels like a "tuned-up" Dual strike, which unfortunately isn't a good thing. However, one of the best things about Dark Conflict is the difficulty Single-player offers. Music With the characters and environment evolving, the music had to too. Now its much darker, and would sound like what any army song should sound like, with the fast beating of drums filling the background as you listen to the clever dialogue said in the story. Truly dynamic. The best part of the music though is the battle sequence, with the sound effects sounding so sweet it would make a lollipop filled with sugar taste like it had no sugar in the first place. The music is electrifying, which is required in any great video game. Difficulty One of the best things by far in Dark Conflict is the difficulty. In the beginning of the story, any player can get passed, due to the tutorials given at the earlier missions. However, eventually the game gets so hard only the wittiest, smartest commanders can get through those nail-biting last missions. In order to give newbs a chance, there's a place where they can go once a mission called the "Tactics room", where they can get information on the mission, and how to beat it. Howevet, this doesn't help them much, as the AI enemy is much smarter then before. Instead of deploying tanks in the face of a bomber in earlier games, this time they would deploy anti-airs to combat your fighters. The smart AI is actually a good thing, as it makes the story ever more challenging. Replayability So, what would you do when you finish a game? Leave it? Thats not the case with Dark Conflict, as you can unlock bonus missions through completing the normal ones, meaning the perfectionists would be striving to complete the game to the full. Rewards have returned too, meaning that if you create enough units, you get special awards, and even rankings, which leads to boasting rights. However, if you don't feel like going through all the bonus levels, and reaping all the awards, there's always the jewel of the game: Wi-fi. Online Dark Conflict is the first ever Advance Wars game to let you go online against anyone in the world. You can choose to either battle, or trade maps that have been designed by people all over the world. When in a online battle, to avoid stalling, a time limit has been set to limit time wasters. This means that people would have to move their units quickly if they were to have a chance in completing all necessary objectives. Unfortunately though, there have been reports of hackers on online play, so it sometimes ruins the online experiance. The most miraculous part of the online in Dark Conflict is the ability to chat with anyone, the first in any Nintendo game...Ever! However, Intelligent Systems have seen that this online chat could bring strangers, or gangsters online, so they decided to make online chat optional. Overall Overall, Dark Conflict is a great and improved version of Advance Wars, in every way, ranging from the great graphics to the dastardly difficulty. If you don't mind a game that will put you to the ultimate test, then this is the game for you. RATING:8/10 |
