Super Smash Bros.![]() Publisher: Nintendo Developer: HAL Labs Platform: Nintendo 64 Genre: Action, Fighting ESRB: E This game deserves one long, overly-exaggerated “Falcon PUNCH!!!” The year is 1999, and if you like fighting games, chances are you have a game in your collection that has one of the following words: street, fighter, tekken, mortal, or kombat. A new fighting game is about to emerge on the N64, and it is going to have all of the fan favorites from many of the popular Nintendo series. You’re excited, your friends are excited… anyone that likes a good, fun game is excited. This game is rated E for everyone for a very good reason. This game is a fighter, but also a great game to play with family and friends. Why, you might ask. Well, for starters this game is one of the most addicting games I have ever played. You start the game up, pick the game type and settings, (more on that later) and you fight. Now, what sets this fighting game into a whole new category is the new stuff it brings into the fighting genre. For starters, it has items. At first I thought the items were going to be the typical [and boring] sword, extra health, and the works. I was sure wrong. This game has an array of different items. Some of my favorites include the Beam Sword, Pokéball, Fire Flower, and the Home-Run Bat. Some are from Mario games, and some aren’t. Each item can be honed to perfection. I found the Home-Run Bat to be absolutely lethal at times. I was also glad to see all of the Nintendo favorites come to the fight. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Pikachu, Fox McCloud, Samus Aran, Link, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff. Each character has there own move set, and for the most part they are all fairly balanced. You will probably find more than one character that you like to fight with. Mario can throw fireballs, Kirby can suck in her enemies and obtain their powers, Link can throw bombs at people, et cetera. You will find that it may seem like cheating when you are going against someone who has honed their skills with a certain character, but that simply means you have some much needed practice. ![]() Chaos in Saffron City. The stages in this game are also based on Nintendo games. There’s a Hyrule Castle, Sector Z, Planet Zebes, Saffron City, and more. Each stage is unique in a sense that the stages interact with the player. No, Hyrule Castle isn’t going to be making small talk with you. What I meant, is that each course has it’s own special events that happen in them to make the experience even more fun (and chaotic). In Saffron City, a gate opens and a number of Pokemon can come out to help you, or hurt you. In Planet Zebes, the lava occasionally overflows and forces players to fight for the top platform. The stages in this game are simple, but in a fighting game, that is how they work out the best. There are moving platforms and obstacles here and there, and all of this helps add to the fun. Graphics wise, this game is all it had to be. The graphics don’t really blow your mind away… they are a simple 3D. Since you are only allowed to move left and right, but the game is presented in 3D, it kind of reminds me of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Tekken. The effects are also represented in a nice cartoon way. The explosions, the ray guns, they all look very nice. The character models in this game are how the characters appeared in the games for the N64. Link looks like the Ocarina of Time version of him, Mario looks like the Super Mario 64 version of him, and so on and so forth. Nothing to really complain about graphics wise, and when you are fighting and really getting into the action, you won’t even notice, or care what the game looks like. No matter what game I am playing, I always care a lot about the musical score of the game. With any platformer or RPG, music is important. I would have never thought that music in a fighting game would ever have been hummed by me throughout the day, but after playing this game I realized that music is a great thing to have in fighting games as well. The mood of the game is changed drastically in this game with the music. Without music, it would be a fun game, but with the music in the game, it makes beating up the pink punching bag (Jigglypuff) just that much more enjoyable. Each stage has it’s own music. Hyrule Castle plays a remix of all the Zelda Overworld themes. The Mushroom Kingdom stage plays the retro NES tune from the original Super Mario Bros. All of the tunes are really nice, and they suit the stages well. If you are a retro gamer from back on the NES and SNES, then you will remember some of these tunes. It will definitely give retro gamers a real shot of nostalgia. ![]() Mario only seconds before owning the pink punching bag. There are also lots of things to do in this game. The majority of your time will be spent playing through the single player game. This consists of you choosing a character, and fighting all of the other characters. There are also some mini games in between some of the battles that have you hitting targets or jumping on a bunch of platforms without falling off. These are a fun side thought, and they do well to make sure you don’t get bored of fighting. If you really want to get your money’s worth, however, you are going to want to have some more controllers. The multiplayer in this game leaves me speechless. With the exception of Mario Party, I think I have had some of my most memorable moments playing this game multiplayer. Watching someone walk right under you when you are about to land on top of them with Kirby’s rock power never gets old. There is also a gameplay option to have a fight against a random character(s) of your choice, and you are able to select the setting for this, and all of the other game types via the settings menu. A practice mode is also thrown in to let you, well, practice. With all these features, and being one of the most fun to play fighting game I have ever played, I still play this game every new and then. Conclusion: Intuitive, simple, enjoyable, ludicrous, chaotic. These are just a few words to sum up this game. HAL Labs have really outdone themselves with this game. From the intuitive items and stages, to the great use of character moves and music; this game hits gold in all the right places. If you looked up ‘fun’ in the dictionary, you would find a picture of this game. (It’s just a saying…) 9.0/10 |

I don't want to own people online like I do with my friends.
Actually, I'm too lazy to check all of the stuff and upload all of the stuff onto my computer. |

It just takes a good block of time of downloading stuff that I'm not prepared to do for something I will probably never play. Thats my whole beef on it. |
