I need to get out of here

When I say here, I mean America. Our money is becoming worthless and our politicians are just indescribable.

So I decided that I'm probably going to be moving to Britain in a couple of years. :) What do you say Katz? Am I making a good choice? :o

    Paul's dumb Alex is cool

It's the same mostly everywhere and Britain loves us. I would suggest you stay in the U.S.

Yes, Canada is another very good possibility.

    I'd disagree.

Anyway, why not go to Finland? Or Norway? Or Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium...? Wonderful places.

I can think of just about an entire planet of places better than the UK to move to.

This place has gone to ratshit mate. I'd avoid at all costs.

I know it sounds like a bit of a broad statement, but it's an honest opinion.
Everything costs a fortune over here for one thing,

There's a huge abyss separating the generations which I believe is causing all the social problems. This "chav culture" I'm sure you've heard of is not a joke. Kids as young as eight or nine are hitting old ladies in the head with bricks and stealing their handbags.

My parents live, and I was brought up, in a small commuting village in the NW. Very 'green belt,' very pleasant. Everyone knows your name, farmers market every Thursday, the whole shebang.
Even in this, an idyllic place to grow old, the yob scene is terrible. I'm not even joking when I say there are self-titled 'vigilante groups' roaming the streets to pick fights with people sloping off back home after a few pints down the local. I always believed that vigilantes had the saving grace of at least upholding a cause, but it's not so.

Furthermore you've got the BNP, essentially Nazi's who've toned down their views for public consumption. They make plenty of great promises, but clearly their manifesto is unworkable. Amazingly, they're still drawing votes.

All this, plus good old Gordon is lying through his front teeth to his country about the state and workings of the Armed Forces.

There's nothing British about Britain anymore, save the Monarchy. In my opinion one of the few things we do still have going for us.

Nah fella, you're much better off looking elsewhere.

I don't think the BNP is as much of a threat as some people would make them out to be. So far they've only had any success in local elections, and even then the extent of those successes is hardly that great. Certainly at a national level they've failed to make any sort of impact, and as I stated elsewhere, I suspect that the majority of their votes are just protest votes from the right of the Conservative party.

Regarding the armed forces, there is a simple solution to any sort of funding problems: stop occupying other countries. The United Kingdom in fact has the second largest military expenditures of any country in the world.

And relating to the last point, what would you actually give as the definition of 'British' or 'Britishness'? I think the problem so many people have is that they look back on the past with heavily rose-tinted spectacles. In my opinion, the United Kingdom of decades gone by was a pretty shite place. Things aren't particularly great nowadays and there are of course many things I'd have different, but it's certainly better than 50 years ago.

Not the point to be honest.

It costs 50 quid for my parents to fill up the petrol tank, which with the driving around we do adds up quite a bit.

Plus we're already low on money, so this takes a big impact on say christmas presents etc.

With the petrol rates in USA, id hate to see just how much we would save.

Yes, the non-existent accent. Very good reason.

Only some people up north talk like that, and people in Newfoundland.
