    Right, so I was watching some Halo 3 beta goodness on game videos, some were in HD. I decided to download one.. I couldn't believe it!

    Movie = 1 minute long

    File size = 687.5MB.

    That means a HD movie download would be gigabytes.. way into gigabytes..

    which brings me to this question..

    How the holy crap do blu-ray and HD DVD get movies onto discs? They must be so expensive to make! I mean, how can they afford thousands of different copies of 1 movie!?

    Hax?

    Meh, doesn't bother me too much. I can watch normal DVD's and I don't complain about how good they look.

    Nor me. I'm just wondering how they get all that on a disc, and afford to make thousands of them, and thats just 1 movie.

    Read with a blue laser so it is narrower. The laser sees microscopic "bumps" on the disc as a 1 and gaps as 0. The bumps can be closer together because the laser is narrower. Also the disc is slightly larger.

    They are typically multi layered discs, and blue lasers have a much shorter wave length, I beleive the discs can hold anywhere between 5Gb-50Gb
    So yes the movies are very large.

    Edit:Looks like DrFred said the same ting as me, oh well.

    Blue rays single layered hold 25gb and HD-DVDs hold 20gb. I think Blu rays can possibly go to 8 layers (200gb) and HDs can have 5 (100gb)
