Someone please help! I've spent hours trying to figure out how to rip a DVD to my computer, then converting it to AVI so it won't be as big. I've downloaded so many ripping programs, and none have worked. All I've done so far is ripped a movie, and made it into those _TS files.

It's a rather long and complicated process.

There's a tool called dvd::rip that automates it all for you, but since I doubt you're using a Linux distribution of any sort, that's no help for you.

Firstly, you'll need to rip the copy protection from the disc- you'll need a program like "DVD Decrypter" to do that. It's a bit hard to find, but with a little poking around you can find it or another program like it- it sounds like you've already done that, so you might as well skip said step.

Secondly, you'll need AutoGordian Knot- it allows you to encode the DVD you've ripped into a standard XviD AVI of a size of your choice.

A word of warning- encoding to XViD or DivX will take several hours depending on the quality of your Processor. If you're running on a low-end Celeron or Athlon 1x, be prepared to leave it overnight- it's just about the most CPU-intensive task you're ever likely to do. Six hours is an optimistic ETA for a reasonably sized film.

If you're running on a Core 2 Duo or Athlon64/AthlonX2, you should be fairly good to go in two hours or so.

Pah, easier way than that. I do it all the time with this method. Get DVD Shrink from here It's the best one in my opinion. Then if you want an MP4 use this.

For an avi then use Divx.

Thanks a lot AirRaven, it worked! :D I even got a movie to be 400 MB using movie maker. :P Maybe I'll start burning movies like I've always wanted.
