For those of you who don't know who David Ortiz is, he is a designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox. Often referred to as "Big Papi" he is arguably not only the Red Sox best hitter, but also one of the best hitters in the whole league. He is also a very nice, respectful player, which is hard to come by these days. Now when I heard Ortiz got ejected, I was very surprised. He was the last guy I expected to get ejected. So I watched the video on ESPN. He was called out after arguing with the umpire after being struck out, then walking back to the dugout and tossing his bat and helmet. Ortiz last two pitches were called strikes, meaning that he didn't swing at them, but the umpire thought they were in the strike zone. However, neither of the pitches were really that close to the strike zone and were clearly balls. I would have probably argued also. The "real" reason that the umpire threw him out was because he tossed his helmet and bat. However, this was in the dugout, and it was not directed towards the umpire. As long as equipment is not tossed at the umpire, then the only punishment that is supposed to be given to the player is a fine, not an ejection. Personally, I think that Ortiz overreacted a bit, but he did not deserve to be ejected. The umpire obviously wanted to throw him out. |

From what I understand of it I just think the umpire must have been a bit peeved at him after he argued, this happens all the time in sports, umpires, referees whatever, they all make mistakes and at the high level that these players are playing at they're bound to react to some bad calls. The pressure on them is huge to deliver every match, but it's the same with refs, the players just have to acknowledge that they will make mistakes from time to time, but in the heat of things, sometimes you let your emotions run away. |

True. However, this umpire is known for being VERY harsh on players. He's ejection-happy. |
