Do they take video games and anime so seriously that they like to pretend they're part of what they love the most? Do they do it to exscape the lonely miserable reality that is their life? Is it because of a sexual fetish? Any help clearing this up would be a great help as I do not see what they get out of it.

I see it as really being no different than a video game. Just more open-ended, and text-ey. Kinda like customized Zork only better.

As for those who do "sexual" type RPs to get off, those are the real sad cases.

The dust from the weeds killed the Swedes,
And the Norwegian died of laughter.

...Uhhh... I think it is a form of entertainment, to be quite honest. You decide your own paths and stuff, and you can have people join it. You can change the way the video game went or make a totally different one! I RPed with my little brother and little cousin real life once. We had lightsabers, and we fought each other and leveled up. I figured that was the only way I could make them shut the hell up. :)

But you cannot interact with people over the Internet with those.

I only RPed once, and that was in real life, and I was baby-sitting two young kids, so I figured they might like it. I would RP on the Internet, too, but I have not really found a place to RP yet.

Part of the fun with Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books IS that you don't interact with people.

I guess some people like it the other way around, and I bet those books suck, anyways. I am basing that all on the fact of the corny name, though.

Nice job ignoring the point I made in my post. Or does it just plain make sense? It's customizable, interactive, multiplayer Zork.

I believe the point i'm trying to make is that Choose-Your-Own-Adventure are better than RPing due to the lack of interactivity.

Why do people RP? Let me do it the way i'm familar with.

Why do I RP? RP to me is the easiest way to learn how to write a successful story. You become someone in a time(usually) your not living in. For example, it's so rare for people to use swords in modern day times and I always wished I lived in the progun age; with RPs I get to visualize what it'd be like in that time. Then I add twist of fantasy of dragons, trolls, orcs, and other mythological beasts. What you should be asking is why peolple dream. 'Wait. Dreaming? I thought we were talking about RPs.' There's no difference really. The only difference I can tell is that you have more control over RPs than of dreams.

Well, your face seems "soo" stupid and pathetic to me. What say you to that, Monsieur Souris?

    OSHI, DOUBLE POST?

But in all of seriousness, I'll address this. Yes, sometimes it is a fetish thing, and a way to escape loneliness. This is sort of a "pathetic" use of it, if you will; they cling to it, depend on it.

But for me, personally, it's a way to express myself creatively when reality and even video games bore me. I don't have the attention span to write a novel, but I find it entertaining to set up a game on AIM and kind of engage in a group storywriting thing. Does it engulf my life? Not at all. I'm a successful honor student juggling home, school, an active social calendar, and membership in a local community band as the third-chair flutist.

My games aren't really based off of any anime or video game. It's just a world I invented, and a set of characters that I invented along with my friends. That's all.
