http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6057734.stm Humanity may split into two sub-species in 100,000 years' time as predicted by HG Wells, an expert has said. Evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics expects a genetic upper class and a dim-witted underclass to emerge. The human race would peak in the year 3000, he said - before a decline due to dependence on technology. People would become choosier about their sexual partners, causing humanity to divide into sub-species, he added. The descendants of the genetic upper class would be tall, slim, healthy, attractive, intelligent, and creative and a far cry from the "underclass" humans who would have evolved into dim-witted, ugly, squat goblin-like creatures. Race 'ironed out' But in the nearer future, humans will evolve in 1,000 years into giants between 6ft and 7ft tall, he predicts, while life-spans will have extended to 120 years, Dr Curry claims. Physical appearance, driven by indicators of health, youth and fertility, will improve, he says, while men will exhibit symmetrical facial features, look athletic, and have squarer jaws, deeper voices and bigger penises. Women, on the other hand, will develop lighter, smooth, hairless skin, large clear eyes, pert breasts, glossy hair, and even features, he adds. Racial differences will be ironed out by interbreeding, producing a uniform race of coffee-coloured people. However, Dr Curry warns, in 10,000 years time humans may have paid a genetic price for relying on technology. Spoiled by gadgets designed to meet their every need, they could come to resemble domesticated animals. Receding chins Social skills, such as communicating and interacting with others, could be lost, along with emotions such as love, sympathy, trust and respect. People would become less able to care for others, or perform in teams. Physically, they would start to appear more juvenile. Chins would recede, as a result of having to chew less on processed food. There could also be health problems caused by reliance on medicine, resulting in weak immune systems. Preventing deaths would also help to preserve the genetic defects that cause cancer. Further into the future, sexual selection - being choosy about one's partner - was likely to create more and more genetic inequality, said Dr Curry. The logical outcome would be two sub-species, "gracile" and "robust" humans similar to the Eloi and Morlocks foretold by HG Wells in his 1895 novel The Time Machine. "While science and technology have the potential to create an ideal habitat for humanity over the next millennium, there is a possibility of a monumental genetic hangover over the subsequent millennia due to an over-reliance on technology reducing our natural capacity to resist disease, or our evolved ability to get along with each other, said Dr Curry. He carried out the report for men's satellite TV channel Bravo. That last line, says a lot to me about this article to be honest. |

LOL I read this like an hour ago at school when I was at Digg, I was going to post this.
Well, although it seems possible and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened, I'm not a science whiz with the evolution/technology sceme. |

it's all interesting, but given that none of it will actually be done with during our lifetimes...it doesn't really matter. |

The human race is already divided into two parts right now: People who are me (the superior group) and people who aren't me (the inferior group). We don't need some fancy theory of evolution to tell us that. |

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6057734.stm Humanity may split into two sub-species in 100,000 years' time as predicted by HG Wells, an expert has said. Realize how long that is? Evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics expects a genetic upper class and a dim-witted underclass to emerge. The human race would peak in the year 3000, he said - before a decline due to dependence on technology. True on the technology dependence. Not if we still have McDonalds in that future. Americans are shorter than most countries citizens due to malnutrition which can be blamed on Fast Food Restraunts.(Seriously there is some type of chemical in the burgers that stunts growth and basically makes your hormones inactive. Well this guy sure seems hopeful eh? However, Dr Curry warns, in 10,000 years time humans may have paid a genetic price for relying on technology. We'll be dead by then and most probally we'll have died or disappeared for reasons. Spoiled by gadgets designed to meet their every need, they could come to resemble domesticated animals. Receding chins Social skills, such as communicating and interacting with others, could be lost, along with emotions such as love, sympathy, trust and respect. People would become less able to care for others, or perform in teams. Wouldn't life basically cease to exist if communication was destroyed? Physically, they would start to appear more juvenile. Chins would recede, as a result of having to chew less on processed food. There could also be health problems caused by reliance on medicine, resulting in weak immune systems. Preventing deaths would also help to preserve the genetic defects that cause cancer. Suprisingly another true statement, that's already happening nowadays. Ever wonder why people get sick easier now than they did back in the olden times? Exactly, purely conspiracy. |

They don't. People are now getting cancer and hart disease because they live longer. The cold snap or the cholera outbreak doesn't kill all the babies anymore, so they can grow up to get Alzheimer's. As far as this thread goes, lolz. |

That's like saying that because I'm not gonna be around to witness the oil crisis, means it won't matter. And this article is utter bollocks. |

How about this: The Sun is going to burn out in roughly 5 billion years. Should that matter? And actually, since the oil crisis is going to occur way sooner [edit: most likely in our lifetime]....and depending on definition of crisis (such as Iran's crazy leader having a lot of oil)....you could almost say it's happening now. As far as supplies go, I don't know when they'll run out, do you?
OMGZ, 100,000 YEARS FROM NOW, IT'S POSSIBLE THAT THERE WILL BE TWO DIFFERENT RACES OF HUMANS. That's like, going to be affecting my, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, grandchildrens, kids. How will they ever deal with it without me? |

What's that supposed to mean? A lot of these ideas may seem possible from our current standpoint, but I doubt any of them will come true. Trends could change, and we really can't predict anything at this point. For example, I've heard people at one time (err, sometime in the early/middle nineteenth century, I'd guess) people speculated that all furniture around the 1990s-2000s would be made of plastic and filled with water, so it'd be easier to wash. That proved untrue even after mere decades. How would you expect a prediction over 10,000 years to be any more accurate? (Don't take my word for it on the above condition; I remeber reading about it somewhere, but my memory of it is shaky and I doubt I remembered all the details right.) Of course, there's also the possibility that we will wipe ourselves out in nuclear war before then. You never know.
