Is there no low to which sony won't stoop?

How can advertising get to be so bad, and dumb? (in general) They do pay money for this kind of stuff....

You are all thinking about and talking about Sony thanks to the ad. In that respect, I'd say it has served its purpose. That's pretty effective advertising.

Unfortunately no-one here and surely no-one anywhere has felt like buying a Sony product because of this advertisement and this has instead just damaged their reputation. Also, some ads are effective but illegal and wrong, like if a product claimed to the best ever without any proof or those subliminal message ads.

Maybe I'm missing something. The purpose of advertising is not so much to sell someone your product. It is to draw the consumer to your brand. To get your logo in their head. Can you honestly say that you have ever seen an ad, and it has actually compelled you to go out and buy the advertised product? I don't think I can. But the next time I'm shopping, I may subconciously pick a brand I saw on TV because of (dun dun dun) brand recognition.

When a company advertises, they want to attract your attention, then assault you with slogans and logos while you're still watching. The theory is, the next time you're out looking at products, you recognize the logo, and hopefully pick up the product.

I also don't understand how an ad like this would damage sony's reputation. It shows violence. Yes. But it's not especially realistic or gritty. It's almost over the top to the point of aubsurdity. I can't take it seriously enough to be offended. I don't see this being illegal or wrong. So I'm not quite sure what you're on about.

If anyone can fill me in, that'd be great.

There goes me thinking Sony were trying to sell a PSP.

I knew where you were coming from in saying Sony will become more recognised by this advert. However, I think those are normally tactics used by companies that need publicity badly whereas Sony are quite well known (even to non-gamers). Once you become that well recognised it is normally best not to destroy your reputation. You don't see how this can destroy Sony's reputation but I argue that a company so desperate to publicise their product that they will use excessive violence and try and make pathetic reasoning for this (they seem to be saying do violence in game not in real life or something) normally get a bad reaction and a reputation for doing this.

Of course this will work in the same way as the Wii got publicity except.... there are normally rules on advertisements on TV or whatever (at least in the UK) and if they are obscene or unreasonable then they are not allowed. Many adverts far milder than this one have been banned.

I'm not bothered by it either but I'm sure a lot of people will be. I just see this as bad from Sony's marketing team rather than Sony as a whole but most people will just associate Sony with this.

All I know is that ever since Sprite started running their "Sublymonal' commericials, I have not drank a single can of the stuff. :P

And I doubt any company would want consumers thinking along the lines of "What racist bastards, I'll never buy product from such assholes!"

but then again, I could be confused.
