No more drivin w/ cell phones in California SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will sign a bill today making California the fourth state in the nation to outlaw speaking on cell phones while driving unless the driver is using a headset or other hands-free device, his office announced Thursday. The signing ceremony is scheduled at the Oakland Airport Hilton. The governor has said in the past that studies show drivers and passengers ``get injured or die because of being on the phone'' and that ``we have to do everything we can to halt that.'' But he had stopped short of endorsing the bill by Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto. Thursday's announcement ended speculation that Simitian's bill would fall short for a sixth straight year. Supporters include insurers and law enforcement groups across the state, and there is little remaining opposition. Though it may be difficult to enforce, police agencies in the traffic-clogged Bay Area and Los Angeles regions say they will try. ``We hope there will be voluntary compliance,'' said Capt. Ronald Marbrey of the Los Angeles Police's Valley Traffic Division. ``But an individual just driving down the road, and being in control, may get stopped.'' The measure requires drivers to use hands-free devices such as headsets and speakerphones. It would impose a $20 fine for a first infraction and $50 for subsequent violations, beginning Jan. 1, 2008. That leaves a year for the California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies to educate the public. Unlike other moving violations, these infractions would not affect car insurance rates. Simitian hailed the bill-signing announcement. ``Cell phones are the No. 1 cause of distracted-driving accidents in California,'' he said. ``Accidents by drivers using hand-held phones outnumber those driving hands-free by a ratio of 25 to one.'' Simitian has sponsored the proposal for six straight years, finally addressing the concerns of nearly everyone. The remaining opponent is Sprint Nextel. The company says it opposes the bill because it ``fails to address the real public issue of inattentive driving.'' New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and the District of Columbia have adopted hands-free cell phone laws. So have 20 countries. Join my state with teh Hatred  Source |

I'm actually completely for it! Less people will die because people won't be texting while driving or focusing on the phone as much. Bluetooth enabled phones should be bought along with the bluetooh asscessories. I wish TN would go to this... |

I don't think turning off your phones or buying a headset will be too much trouble for you all - we are surviving with the law in place in Britain.

I believe that dumbasses who don't know how to drive would account for most of any state's accidents. Cell phones are just part of that equation. Yet every day, there's planty of people on the road that shouldn't be. Should we have cops randomly pull people over and give them IQ tests? but whatever. It's not like that's an easy law to enforce. But it may be an easy one to abuse....who's a jury going to believe, a cop or a driver? |

That sucks... What if Friend A does not know how to get to Chicago, and Friend B needs to tell him the directions. Friend A is mentally challenged, therefore he cannot remember things from a couple of minutes ago, so he has to have someone telling him what to do every single second... I know someone is going to say the following statement: "Mentally challenged people can remember stuff, it is just that blah, blah, blah, blah!" Yeah. B) |

As far as I know, mental problems are just reason to not issue a driver's license. For the same reason blind people ae not allowed to drive. Now how about my dad, who was injured when he was T-boned by a driver who ran a red light because she was fiddling with a cellphone? I bet she wasn't reminding her mentally challenged friend how to operate. |

Why? It's not that bigga problem. If you want to talk, pull over for a second. It's not rocket Science.
Friend A needs to buy a map.
Same nearly happened to my Dad, when someone on their phone pulled out right in front of him. He and the car behind managed to stop, but the car behind that didn't, and there was a huge pile up right up the motorway. |

Well, like Cat said, don't drive if you're metally challenged, And it did say you could have a hands-free device. I like the new law, even though I don't live there. Less wrecks. |
