    Developer: Intelligent Systems
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Release Date: October 11th, 2004
    Genre: Turn Based RPG
    Platform: Gamecube
    Rating: E - Everyone

The Thousand Year Door is a sequel to one of the best games ever made on the Nintendo 64, Paper Mario. Paper Mario 64 is one of the greatest games ever created, no doubt, but when I heard and saw all of the buzz about the new sequel for the Gamecube, I couldn't resist the urge to get it. So picked it up as soon as possible, and I played the hell out of it. Once I was around the 3rd chapter, I knew I was playing something special. Not only was it already better than Paper Mario 64, but it was demolishing it. The Thousand Year Door brought what Paper Mario 64 created, and evolved it. All of the battling is still here, but it's also better. The graphics also grew, and the music grew. It's like a huge advancement over the Paper Mario 64. Here it is, the review to one of the best RPG's ever created.

The Thousand Year Door has a different story from the 64 Paper Mario, but still fantastic. The basic story is that the evil villain of the game: Grodus, and his team: the X-Nauts, have taken Princess Peach to their moon base on, well, the moon. But before the X-Nauts take Peach, Peach finds a Thousand Year Old map in a mysterious place called Rogueport. Mario gets the letter from Peach, and it says she found the treasure map, and that it leads to a treasure. So Mario must meet with her at Rogueport, which the basic area where you are in the game, kind of like Toadtown in Paper Mario 64. Mario then gets there, but finds Peach nowhere. But, you eventually meet this Goomba Girl named Goombella. Gombella is looking for a treasure, and it so happens that the treasure map that Peach found leads to the treasure that Gombella is looking for. Eventually, you find out that the treasure is actually a thousand year old demon, that Grodus wants to resurrect by sacrificing Princess Peach. So Mario has to get 7 Crystal Stars to open the Thousand Year Old Door which leads to the Shadow Queen, the demon. By the way, the Shadow Queen was locked in by the Thousand Year Door. Mario has to save Peach from Grodus, leader of the X-Nauts. Now you’re thinking, where’s Bowser? Well, he has a part in the game too, and sometimes you get to be him. But I’ll let you see what it’s like.

You might not think it’d be good because the people are paper, but the buildings, water, and everything else is smooth, and beautiful. Definitely this game used the Gamecubes graphics ability. Also, the people are a lot smoother than Paper Mario 64, and they’re also a lot clearer too. The graphics can look super-nice a certain points in the game, and this is probably what Nintendo wanted it to look like when they made Paper Mario for the N64. Another impressive graphical aspect of this game is when Mario folds into an airplane or a boat. Simply amazing. The framerate is smooth, never an instance of slowdown, and I have to say, even though this game is sort of 2-D with all of the paper beings, this game is one of the best looking Gamecube games out there. The areas Mario visits are colourful as hell. Every enemy, tree, rock, house, bridge, everything has the colours of the rainbow and it really shows that great art can make a game look awesome.

The Thousand Year Door has a very good soundtrack to it, mixed with some pretty solid sound. Everything is great, but nothing super-fantastic. Every single place has a different tune, whether it’s from Rogueport Square or at the Creepy Steeple, it’s always different. Even if you enter a building, the music changes. The music also fits wherever you are. Like when you’re at the Creepy Steeple, there’s a scary toon, but when you’re at Far Outpost, there’s a snowy/Christmas theme to the music, which is really cool. The sound is also outstanding. Mario never talks, but he does have his trademake "Yahoo!" and etc. All of the 'bops' and 'bangs' from old Mario games are here too. The game needs voice acting or something next game, there's way too much text and it gets on my nerves when you have to read a novel in order to get through the main quest of the game. This is probably the biggest downfall in all of the Paper Mario games, there's just way too much reading for one to read, and when you get to the later parts of the game, you'll usually just skip past most of the talking, just because you want to play.

The Thousand Year Door just took over what Paper Mario 64 made into a masterpiece and evolved it. You just can't put down the controller, you just want to know what happens next. There are tons more moves you can do in this game, which make it more fun to play than Paper Mario 64. An example of this is: the hammer is just a hammer in Paper Mario 64, but in The Thousand Year Door, you can hurl up and release and you swing the hammer around and around. You can also hang from pipes and float in the water as a boat. The stage, where you battle, is a lot different too. Instead of you just battling, the crowd also gets involved. They throw items at you, if it's a rock or a mushroom, they throw them at you, but you can dodge them. Also, the more crowd you have, the more star power you get after a move. You get star power after retrieving Crystal Stars (sort of like Paper Mario 64). The partners get more advanced too. There's a Goomba, a Koopa Troopa, a Ghost, a Yoshi, another Ghost, a Bomb, and a Mouse. They all have different and unique moves. The partners also have HP in this game, so they can faint too, instead of just Mario, cool addition. You can use items during battle that can either hurt the enemy, or can heal you or your partner. There are also some aspects platforming too. You can jump around the towns when not in battle and sometimes you can find items, badges, and star pieces. You can equip badges in the main menu, they let you do different things during battle, like up your attack, or switch partners without losing a turn. Badges cost badge points, and sometimes you wont have enough badge points to use a badge you want to use. To increase Badge Points, you must level up Mario by defeating enemies. When you level up, you can also increase Mario's Fp and Hp. Hp, or Hit Points, is Mario health, which lowers if you get hit. Fp, or Flowers Points, are the amount of special abilitys you can use. These abilities are things you collect to beat enemies easier. Some examples of these are: using Super Jump after you collect the Super Boots. Or Mega Hammer, which you can use once you collect the Mega Hammer.

I think The Thousand Year Door is probably one of the best games that you can just come back and play over, over, and over again. I’ve beaten it 4 times now, in a matter of a year, which means it’s pretty fun. There’s also more and more you find out every time you play, that you never knew before. I didn’t even get the Mouse partner in my first game. There's also tons of stuff to do after it's all done. You can get all of the Spice T. Recipes, who is a Toad-Woman in Rogueport that can cook any item you want. You can also do all of the Troubles at the Trouble House, which are like little chores you have to do for people. You can also try to collect all of the badges scattered all over the world which can be tiresome because there are tons and tons of badges. There's also the Pit of 100 Trials, which is a super-hard game of constant battling. You go down a pipe, and every floor you go down has a series of enemies you must defeat, once defated, you go down another pipe, and so on. Once you done 99 you must face Bonetails who is the hardest enemy in the game, even harder than the last boss.

Definitely one of my favorite games ever. I love RPG’s and this might be one of the best RPG’s ever, and that's saying something with all of the Final Fantasy's and Fire Emblems out there. I’ll never get bored of this game, and you wont either, so I highly recommend it to anyone that reads this. This game is a must buy for anyone that has a Gamecube, you maybe even a Wii. It's pretty much one of the best games ever created.

    9.5/10

    No prob.
Anyways, that was a very good review.I really enjoyed this game, it was a lot funnier than PM1 also.
But I have to disagree on your rating, I'd give PM2 a 9/10.I thought the first was better.Yeah, PM2 utilized the paper idea a lot more, the graphics were better and stuff like that, but I gotta go with the classic.PM1 introduced me to RPGs, and I'll never forget it.

I like the story line of PM1 better, but overall, PM2 is better. I know what you mean though.

Good review, well done, but I can't comment about which was better since I haven't played PM1.
