![]() Developer: Intelligant Systems Publisher: Nintendo Release Date: February 4, 2001 Genre: RPG Platform: Nintendo 64 Rating: E Intro Paper Mario is one of my all time favorite games. It's one of those games that has an interesting idea...an idea that isn't really needed, but adds to the fun and creativity of the game.Paper Mario sure would be a whole lot different if it was in full 3D... The game was released near the end of the N64's lifespan, which is a shame. The game got lost in a pile of Game Cube hype, and probobly wasn't as appreciated by as many people as it should've been. Here's my review of this classic gem. Story 8.5/10 The story in this game is okay.Just your usual Bowser kidnaps Peach. But I gave it a high rating though because it adds a little twist to the average Mario story line.Bowser's stolen the Star Rod from the seven Star Spirits in Star Haven. The Star Rod is used for granting wishes. But not every wish can be granted.Greedy wishes are not granted, like the ones Bowser has been asking for."I wish that Princess Peach would like me." Bowser got fed up because of this and stole the Star Rod to make himself more powerful. He unroots Princess Peach's castle from the ground and is floating in the air...it's hard to explain.Along with the castle, he takes Peach as well.Mario has to free the seven star spirits that Bowser's baddies are guarding to gain enough power to take down Bowser. ![]() Floating Castle Graphics 9/10 I really thought the graphics were pushing the N64 to its limits.Although it's hard to judge them now with the next gen consoles and their beautiful 3D graphics, when you compare this game to other N64 games, this one really sticks out. The whole concept behind Paper Mario is that there's 2D characters in a 3D world.I thought that it was incredibly well done with such an odd idea. The characters are amazing and cartoony looking, and since they're 2D, it cuts off a lot of the blockiness that most N64 games have. But even the 3D models and buildings aren't blocky. They did a really good job there. The environments are beautiful, ranging from your standard town, to deserts and tropical islands. I also thought the lava looked cool too, the water was shiny and sparkly and I like the dust effects.I was just really impressed by the graphics in this game. ![]() The train is very well done ![]() Awesome paper effects Music 9/10 I really enjoyed the music in this game. Each song fitted so perfectly with the surrounding and what was happening. In Dry Dry Desert, there's sort of an egyption, desert-like theme.Forever Forest has a scary, suspensful theme.Peach's theme is sort of sad, but you can tell that it is also a little hopefull, that Peach will get saved, or somewhere along the lines of that.LavaLava Island has an upbeat tropical theme.Star Way has a mysterious yet relaxing theme.Twink's theme has that happy sign of hope.Every song in this game is just wonderful and fits in perfectly with the situation. (Click on the underlined words to hear the music) Gameplay 10/10 Like all RPGs, Paper Mario starts off pretty slow, and boring. But just give it some time and you'll be hooked on this masterpiece.Along the way in Paper Mario, you'll meet friends who will become your partners, each with special abilities on the field and in battle. For instance, my favorite partner, Lakilester, AKA Spike, is a Lakitu. While you're in battle, Spike can throw spinies at the enemies, but on the field, you can ride in Spike's cloud to float over sharp objects without being harmed. Each partner serves to be very helpful in your quest to take down Bowser. Another cool thing about this game are the items and the food you eat to heal in this game. It's a Mario RPG, so there's a lot of Fire Flowers, Mushrooms and other similar items from the Mario series. One of the best things about Paper Mario is the whole badge system. You can buy badges, find them, or recieve them from people, each of them has a different effect that either aids you in battle or something as simple as changing the sound effects.Mixing and matching the badges to make Mario more powerful is really cool and a lot of fun. Like I said before, Mario has to collect the power of the seven Star Spirits before he can fight Bowser. You do this by travelling to many different cool environments, and solving the dungeon, which consists of some puzzles and of coure, a boss fight. The game is very well put together. In parts of the game, you play as Princess Peach and spy on Bowser. After you've gotten some info on where the next Star Spirit is, Twink, the star that's helping Peach, flies down and tells Mario where to go.I thought that was pretty fun. ![]() A haunted house is one of the many cool environments in Paper Mario ![]() Badge equip screen ![]() During your adventure, you'll find Chuck Quizmo in various locations. He'll quiz you on questions referring to the game, if you get it right, he'll reward you with a star piece. ![]() Playing as Princess Peach Replay Value 7/10 It's an RPG, so you know what's going to happen and everything. It's fun to play the game over again and collect more badges and star pieces and get Mario more powerful, but other than that and pure enjoyment, I wouldn't see a reason that stands out to play it again. Overall 10/10 I enjoy a lot of games, but I don't give out 10's to every single game.Paper Mario is one of those games that you sit down and play, and while you're playing it you say to yourself "Wow, this really is a great game."I know I've done that more than once with this game. If you own an N64, there's no excuse not to own this game. |

Thanks, Zimoshi! Link Kid, Although TTYD is a very good game, I just can't compare it to Paper Mario. |

Ahh, very nice review! Sure to be a good competitor in the Review of the Month.
This was one of my favorite games actually. I bought it for $25 at Gamestop.
Quite exspensive, even though it had been out for awhile. I mean even Gamecube was out then!
