SONIC MEGA COLLECTION![]() Format: Gamecube Published by: SEGA Developed by: Sonic Team Genre: Compilation Number of Players: 2 Release Date US: November 13, 2002 E.U: February 09, 2003 Recomended Memory available: 2 Blocks Intro It's now 11 years ago since God inspired a man to take 50 odd pounds of blue fluff throw it in a big mixing bowl with some red n' white sneakers, a dash of attitude, a sprinkling of worringly clingy sidekick and a HELLLL of a lotta speed. The result SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, lets face it not, many gaming characters nowadays can hold a candle to the moustached master Mario, but sonic has matched and in a lot of cases bettered him. As soon as you hear the first chimes of "SEEGGAAA" float melodically from your telivison the nostalga gates will open and you'll be flooded with memories of old and the happy waves of childhood will be with you once again. Buckle up it's gonna be a bumpy ride!! Controls L Button + R Button Void of any use during gameplay, but can be used to zoom in on the pictures in the gallery, though they can be useful finger rests, and can even be sued to hammer out the sonic tunes as you play along Z Button A second Pause Button in essence, except a lot more useful, it gives you the oppurtunity to do something that sonic fans have yearend to do for years, you can go back to the games menu in seconds without reseting the console, AND you can go back to the games menu and choose another one, you can even save! A, B + X Buttons These buttons all preform the same function as the "a" buttons on the mega drive, they are the ok button on the menu's and they let sonic do everything as basically 99% of sonic games are one button games this willbe your best buddy for those hours of gameplay B Button Simply used as a No or back button on menus Y Button Same as the B Button C Stick In the same class as the shoulder buttons, completly useless for most fo the game, BUT FEAR NOT!! you can use it to skip the pictures of the gallery as "apparently" the control pad wouldn't be up to this arduous task! Assinged a task no doubt to stop it rotting away while you play! Start Button A simple pause button, it pauses the game, so you can take a leak feelinf safe in the knowledge that sonic won't be mugged by a gang of robotic ladybugs while you're gone Control Stick (The analog one) This is where I'm sure most people will get split with the controls in SMC, the control stick while being fairly useful, is generally unresponsive due to the 2-d nature of most sonic games in this. Not used to it's full potential, as it only really shines on Sonic 3-D Blast Control Pad (The up, down, left, right one) I believe that this is the best and most enjoyable choice for a controller of sonic and his gang. It's responsiveness is spot on, but it is a little small, only retro heads, will be able to adapt to it, oh but when you do!! phew!! Controls Score: 7.5 Really nothing wrong with the buttons that are assigned to proper jobs, the lack of innovation stops the controlls from becoming legendary, but the again when it comes to the games why change a winning formula Now we've got the peripherals out of the way, we'll crack on shall we. Sonic Mega Collection does exactly what it says on the tin, or err box. It is a collection of the most popular and succesful sonic games of the 32 bit era, regarded by many as Sonic's finest hours, and generally stated as pure gameplay on tap! So it's got 7 Great Sonic Games to begin with, what else, well as you play you reap the rewards of your hard work, gaining more awards from sega and the sonic team and you fill up your gallery with many a pictureof the blue wonder, ones that you'll no doubt look at once, and then never again. I'll be blunt, this is not a game for those who want the best graphics, the highest sound quality out ther and never really understood the big deal with streaking along as a blue mammal collecting gold which you never actually spend. This appeals to the sonic faithful, if you like sonic you'll love this. When you start up SMC you'll be greeted with a main menu, that has 4 main modes of operation: Options - Simple concept change button configuration, audio or language slections or watch the credits Extras - Where you can watch Movies, look at comics or gaze at illustrations, the movies are vaguely interesting for sonic nuts but the rest won't keep you coming back for more Manuals - a great idea, there are so many games on display they give the option to view each games manual before playing, not only does this bring back memories of old but also can br geuinely interesting. The viewing system is somewhat hard to master, but when you do, it's worth it Games - The Main part of the game, here all the games on displayare viewd and selected to play, all the appeal fo this game is here, this is where it scores the high points for me! The Games you begin with are: Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Sonic and Knuckles Sonic 3D Sonic Spinball Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine Now I'm gonna give a brief run down of each game and any extra info, and then my opinon on everything overall Sonic the Hedgehog ![]() Dr. Ivo Robotnik (AKA Dr. Eggman) the mad scientist, is snatching innocent animals and turning them into evil robots! Help our hero to fight enemies, rescue the helpless animals, and stop Dr. Robotnik from succeeding with his evil plot. This is how one ofthe greatest gaming series' ever began, pretty incredible he's gone this far with a plot like that, if it was TV he'd be axed by now and drinking jack daniels and doing the hokey kokey outside motels for money. Thankfully of course people ignored the plot and focused on the game iteself, afterall games aren't all about plot (pay attentionn now X Box manufacturers) they can be about gameplay! In sonic 1, you play as sonic the hedgehog a lightning fast blue hedgehob who can jump ridiculously long distances and zip round gravity defying loops. What a guy! You collect rings to stay alive, get it by an enemy and you lose all you rings, if you get hit while you have 0 rings you die! Simple, there are of course checkpoints through out the levels to make things easier. The bosses are innovative from the traditional eggman floating ship to the eggman teleporting / crushing machine in the last level. This game also gave birth to the bonus level, and the psychedelic spinning bonus levels that can be accessed by collecting 50 rins in a level, are ridiculously difficult but very enjoyable. Running through levels killing robotic wasps and collecting rings is highly enjoyable and although the graphics aren't top notch, it dosne't really diminish the overall playing experience, as they arent any worse. Score: 8/ 10 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ![]() This game is generally the same as Sonic 1, except you are introduced to the weridly clingy Miles Tails Prowler, a Fox with Two tails, and a habit for getting left behind then turning up right beside you defying all laws of time and space. This game also gave sonic a new ability the speed dash, c'mon all you sonic fans remember hold down and tap a,a,a,a,a,a,a,a,a till the smoke is flying then relase and sonic zooms off. The levels are more detailed and arguably more innovative, which can be seen from the factory level, where the water level rises and you have to escape not form death, but from the heart grasping countdown music, that scares the hell out of you every time the numbers start couting down to your impending doom. ![]() You can play as Tails, whihc is a thrill in itself, and there is also a new bonus level which while being hard, is as enjoyable as ones in the orginal. Sonic has the ability as he did in 1, to collect the 7 chaos emeralds only this time there is a purpose, collect all and you can become "super sonic" the ultimate in robot *censored* kicking, dirt moving yella fella's. Nothing will givge you a bigger trill of satisfaction and of completion to see sonic go all super saiyan on screen. Sonic 2 is all sonic 1 was and more, it improves fantastically Score: 8.5/ 10 Sonic 3 ![]() Officially the first game ever to have a save function, sonic 3 is highly regarded along with sonic and knuckles as the best sonic has to offer. The levels graphically are re-vamped to the extreme, they better some playstation or n64 titles, notice i said some. The gameplay is as fresh as ever with sonic having the ability to preform a flash when "A" is double hit. Combined with different bubble power ups sonic can become a ring magnet or flaming ball of fire that charges at enemies. In the gameplay department, sonic certianly has plenty of stock left, the game has more puzzles and enemies than its predecessors yet it still flows brilliantly, you'll feel like you're running through the atmospheres sonic is. You again can play as tails, whihc adds more beauty to the game. ![]() Of course a new sonic game means a new bonus level, and these ones are in 3d, you must complete these to collect the 7 chaos emeralds and these can be important if you happen to own sonic and knucles, whihc you enivitably do! ![]() Score: 9/ 10 Sonic and Knuckles ![]() In all honesty this is the same game, except the levels are different, this is hardly surprising as both games were brought out at roughly the same time. You however play as Knuckle the Echidna, what is an echidna you ask, well I don't know, sorri, buy a dictionary! neways the real lure of this game is the fact that it can be combined with previous sonic titles to make new games, S + K added to sonic 1 = All the Bonus games from sonic 3 S + K added to sonic 2 = Sonic 2 plus Knuckles, you play as knuckles in sonic 2 S + K added to sonic 3 = The real lure is this, once added, you can save on the sonic and KNuckles world and also you combine adventures to aventually achive hyper sonic, I'll leave it at tht! ![]() Score: 9.5/ 10 Sonic 3D ![]() You race around a 3d world, although this sounds appealing, and it is quite, sonic just seems to lose its freshness when he isn't runnng straight, you have to collect damn birds called flicky's. This is basically the same formula every level, and it does get tedious, however it's the only game that shwcases the abilities of the 3d stick. ![]() Score: 6/ 10 Sonic Spinball ![]() Not worth talking about, It's pinball, with sonic as the ball nuff said ![]() Score: 3/ 10 Dr. Robotnik's.... ![]() This is coloums or Tetris, except with beans, this can be mildly entertainng with more thanone player, but the main mode is tedious and rather frustrating at times ![]() Score: 4.5/ 10 Overall Sound The sound quality has been upgraded to suit the gamecube and the new tv's, it's definitly a lot crisper and I think that it really enhances the gaming experiecne, I mean when you hear the first ching of the rings you'll be loving it! Score: 7.5/ 10 Grpahics They aren't great, we knew that before we picked up the title, but they coudl have been update slightly, all that i can see that has been done is that the colours are a little more vibrant, this does help the beautiful backgrounds and landscapes of the game but they could have been so much more Score: 6/ 10 Replay Value Well If yo love sonic you will keep coming back for more and more and more and more, well you ge tthe idea. It is pure gameplay and nostalga fun. My instruction is to tell you mates you're staying in for a weeked, grab a pizza, and an ice cold coke and play to your hearts content. Score: 9.5/ 10 Overall This is a game that gets you hooked and keeps you there for months, I love it, and if you love sonic you will to. This is all about the feeling you get when watching a red faced eggman flying off into the distace with a cloud of baclk smoke behind him, about running around those loop-de-loops, about the feeling you get when you look at green hill zone for the first time in years, it's about all that and more. This is a showcase for all of your memories good and bad! you want my adive, then don't listen to the big companies and sites that say it's dated and that the grpahics suck. Trust me you need this games to be truly happy. The only reason it isn't perfect is becasue of minor faults like some of the games being fillers and the controls ebing slightly lacking in some parts. Other wiseits perfect. Score: 93 % |

lol, I like it cause I fully agreed with you. Though pardon for not sticking more then just my two-cents in, i'm a little bit bitter over Sonic for the following reasons: #1: I'm a brawny gamer. I can beat bosses in Zelda I'm not meant to see till four dungeons from now, I can charge up to a scary looking monster and have the level beat in five moments, but pray I never have to solve a puzzle, or stradegize about a weapon, or infact anything requiring inttilegence. So I was stuck being the immortal Miles who'd do all the work putting the smack down on Robotknick. Still my comrades had to get rings to become Super Sonic because in water levels I had no coordination so i'd sink like a rock. #2: I hate mecha.. ALOT! You'd think Eggman be the perfect villain then for me to thwart but there aint no way i'm dealing with that much mecha in one sitting.. >_< |

Hilariously derailing one-liner

I thought that was a very good review. I used to have Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic Spinball, but my Genesis was sold a few years ago :(. They were all good games...^_^ Anyway, I like how you sorted everything and even had some mini-reviews for the games in the collection Good job! |
