All right. Here is my promised 'overworld guide.' Like I did with the dungeons, ill go over specific 2-d and 3-d pointers. If you're stuck in the overworld in a zelda game (except for AoL) this should steer you in the right direction.

Well, thats what i'm hoping, anyway.

    General Overworlds

Overworlds can be harder than dungeons, at times. It can be difficult to know what to do or where to go next. What did they say, again? Its important to listen to the hints the good guys give you. They're in there for a reason; they're not there just to annoy you with long-winded riffraff, although sometimes it may seem that way. Sometimes, getting from point A to point B means talking to certain people in a certain order a certain amount of times. Be the social butterfly. Talk to everybody you meet, if necessary.
Where have you been? Sometimes the best thing to do is explore areas where you've never been before. In some circumstances, there IS only one way to go. Its just a matter of finding out where it is.
What? What does this do? You may not be familiar with the functions of all of your weapons. Did you know that the hookshot can latch onto wood, or that bombs can blow away some rocks? Continuing on can sometimes require you to get a special weapon or item. Make sure to try it out!
I know, in some places, it just seems that there is absolutely nowhere to go, and finding out what to do next seems like something that only Mr. Holmes could figure out. Don't get worked up. Often times, what to do next is so obvious, you'll smack yourself when you find out what it is. Its true. If you're tired or have been playing for a long time, you have a headache, you're going around in circles, etc.... Now's a good time to take a break. Play a mindless FPS. Go out somewhere. Come back to it tomorrow. Sometimes, this can be the best medicine. ;)

    2-d Overworld Specifics

In some games, there are places in the overworld where it's desperately confusing. The best thing to do is NOT get mad. If its making you irritable, put the dang gameboy/controller down! I know it kinda may seem old-fashioned, but if you forget about it and come back to it tomorrow, you'll have better luck than wasting your day running around in circles, frustrated. Also, know that you'll figure it out, eventually. There IS no way to get stuck forever in a game.

    3-d Overworld Specifics

Talk to everybody. This is a golden rule. Sooner or later, you'll find some guy that knows what he's talking about, and he'll give you some hints. Also, rely on your pple, whether it be Navi, Tatl, The King of Red Lions, etc. These people are there to help you, and will oftentimes steer you in the right direction.
Don't be afraid to write stuff down. Get a pen and paper and write stuff down. Sometimes this will clear stuff up like magic. (It did for me in tWW when i was trying to find the fire/ice arrows) If you need to remember a code, write it down! Its going to help you avoid some major frustration.
Yes, you need your map for the overworld, too. If you havent been somewhere before, then go ahead and check it out! Its more important to know your compass directions than you might think. (north is up, south is down, east is right, west is left)

Well, that's all i got. I hope this helped you in your time of need. If it didn't, don't hesitate to ask for my help! Overworlds can tend to be a bit more vague than dungeons, and thus can be harder. Be ready for anything out there, whether you be in Hyrule, Koholint, or Termina! :D
