Hello.. this is me, ShadowDevil, with my 5th review. Although I've made many reviews before, I still feel that this is incomplete. I really haven't made a good review, and I'm really wanting to make a review that is "good." So, that's what I am trying to attempt with this game; probably the game that I know the most about. So, welcome to the review, and I hope you enjoy it!

This game is an RPG.

Introduction:
...Aah, Paper Mario. The classic. We all remember this game, right? Well, at least I do. Sadly overlooked, it was one of the best games for the Nintendo 64, but with all of the new things coming out... one of the landmark games of Nintendo's third home console was given just a little glimpse from most. Unfortunately, it could have been bigger if it was released earlier... but it was worth the wait.

Storyline
"Mail call!" The voice, Parakarry the mailman's, was heard from Mario and Luigi in the house. Luigi went in to get the mail! What was it? A card from Princess Peach! Yippy skippy! The party was already starting, so the Mario Bros. rushed down the pipe, through Toad Town, and to the beautiful castle.

After talking with many guests, Mario went to see Princess Peach, of course. They were talking on the deck, and BOOM! The castle rose into the sky! After seeing Mario's longtime fiend, Bowser, Mario decided to try to fight him, but to no avail. The Koopa King has stolen the Star Rod of Star Haven and kidnapped the seven Star Spirits that watch over this magical object. You see, the Star Rod was used to grant any wish wanted, and now that Bowser stole it, he could have whatever he wanted. Of course, he wished to become strong, and he defeated Mario, kidnapped the princess, and keeps the great castle in the sky.

Mario gets up in Goomba Village several days later, and with the help of the nice Goombas there, and his new partner, Goombario, the great plumber makes his way to Shooting Star Summit. When he gets there, he hears the voice of the first star spirit, Eldstar, telling him to please rescue him to the east, in Koopa Bros. Fortress. And therefore, the search to bring peace to the Mushroom Kingdom begins..

Story: 9.5/10

Mario and his buddy Goombario on their way to save the star spirits.

Graphics
As you can see from the title, this game is called "Paper" Mario. One of the main things you can see about these games are the graphics. The clever designers put two-dimensional characters in a three-dimensional enviornment, and came out with a surprising success. The characters, while 2D, can still move up and down, and the bright colors of the Mushroom Kingdom provide a pleasent surprise for the mainstream gamer.

So... yeah. As you can see, the graphics... they aren't the best you've ever seen, but they are still above-average, and provide a nice change of scenery from most of the 3D titles you've been seeing for the Nintendo 64 these days.

Graphics: 8/10

Shy Guy's Toy Box is one of the great colorful scenarios that Paper Mario provides.

Gameplay
Yup, it's the gameplay. The most important aspect in all of video games, which Paper Mario lives up to the Mario series' expectations in. Mario can jump, use his hammer, and have a whole bunch of different aspects with a new innovative system using Badges. With these Badges, Mario can increase his attack, but it makes him decrease his defense, and many other things can happen, including changing the battle music! You can talk to people, examine things, and do much more in the field, but where Paper Mario really shines is with the battle system. And, each one of Mario's partners have their own special moves with the partner system. However, I don't want to be so spoiler-prone, so I won't spoil those for you!

The battle system in Paper Mario is much different than that of many other RPG, but that doesn't mean it is bad, does it? No, it doesn't. In the battle system of this game, you can choose to do many things: jump, hammer, star spirit, or run. In jump, you just, well, jump on the enemy. Hammer, you hammer the enemy. Run, you run from the enemy by pressing the A button as fast as you can, and you lose coins for bailing out. However, with star spirit, you can do many things; one for each spirit. Healing, powerful attacks, and a whole load of different things are what you can do with the star spirit attacking system!

You also earn things called "Star Points." You gain these from enemies... you get more from harder enemies, and if you are very far in the game, you might not get as many, or none at all, from the baddies. Every 100 Star Points, you can level up. When you level up, you can choose to increase your HP by 5, FP by 5, or Badge Points (BP; increases the amount of badges you can wear, better badges cost more BP than weaker badges.)

But wait, there's more! The battle system also provides the great action commands. Action commands come in a variety of ways, like pressing A as soon as you hit the enemy (Jump) holding back the joystick until the star lights up (Hammer) and pressing a button as fast as you can (Run)... but there are also things you can do on defense, like pressing a button right when your foe hits you to reduce the damage you take, so you save up your points!

And, last but not least in the battle system, the three types of points. Heart points, flower points, and star points. Heart points are your health. Flower points let you do special kinds of moves with badges and the like. You need star points to inact moves from the star spirits, except for Focus, which brings up your star points. 'Nuff said.

Gameplay: 9.5/10

Mario and his buddy Koops go up against some Goombas, with Koops using the action command to attack the classic baddies.

Sound
Quite frankly, there isn't much to say about the sound of this game. The music provides cheerful sounds and jingles in a cheerful enviornment, but... well... evil-sounding noises in a dark, eerie enviornment. The voice acting isn't much; it's just high-pitched babbling, but the talk bubbles bring the voice acting up somewhat.. oh yeah, Mario talks with his constant "Oo-hoo!" and "Wee-hee!" So, yeah, overall, there isn't much to say about the sound, but it's still pretty good.

Sound: 8/10

Mario and his friend, Lakilester, talk to the wizard Merlon and his friend.. uh.. the purple dude.

Challenge... how long and hard is this game?
Well, unfortunately, this game isn't that hard if you're just a casual gamer that likes to beat the game and you're done with it. It might take some time to figure out some of the puzzles, and the game is pretty long, but it's still quite simple. However, to add more length and challenge to the game, you might want to try the side-quests.

The game has many side quests... you can deliver all of Parakarry (yes, he eventually becomes one of your partners) mail, find all of the magical and shiny (Ooh, shiny!!) star pieces, and try to become the Paper Mario master by finding Chuck Quizmo and beating all of his quizzes, which you also earn star pieces from. So, overall, if you want a short and easy game, just do the story, but if you want a long and hard game, also do the side-quests.

Challenge: 8.5/10

Mario the genius aces one of Chuck Quizmo's quizzes and earns his prize... the Star Piece.

Replay Value
Well, Paper Mario is an RPG... it's not like you could play it over and over and over and over and over and over... well, you get the picture. But it's not the type of the game you would want to play over and over and over and over again... but it's still pretty darn fun to play over and over again... but maybe with not so many of the overs. And for something that makes sense, the sidequests make the replay value go up. If you get bored with the game, try some of 'em.

Replay Value: 8/10

Mario and partner Bombette stranded in the desert... and oh no, a Bandit! It'll give you some replay value trying to outrun the bandit and get out of the big desert, won't it?

Fun Factor
Yeah... this game is pretty fun to play. There are many fun things to do in the story... and if you get bored of the story, then you can do some of the side-quests that I mentioned in the Challenge section above. However, overall, you'll have fun with this game... well, at least I did. The story is different in each chapter (to put it simply, each chapter is rescuing one of the star spirits, the beginning, the end, and stopping Bowser) and, as I said, you can do the many different types of sidequests for a change of pace.

Fun Factor: 10/10

Mario and his partner Watt go through the spooky forest... let's hope the ghosts don't pop out.

Summing it Up

Pros
-Great Storyline
-Intresting Graphics
-Decent Music
-Terrific Gameplay
-Amazing Battle System
-Fun and Challenging Sidequests
-Nice Replay Value
-Fun Game

Cons
-No voice acting
-Graphics are a little odd
-Storyline is pretty easy

Overall
Overall, this game is a great game. If you like Mario games or RPGs, or are just a general fan of video games, I highly recommend you taking a look at this game... that is, if you haven't already, with the nice eye-catching cover this game has.

Overall: 9.5/10 (Note: The overall score is not taken from the scores of the different parts of the game and added up)

Credits
-DewTheDewDude5 for the inspiration for this review and to give me the categories for it (I got them from his review, but the actual text is my own)
-Gamespot.com for the screenshots

Well, after about 90 minutes of work, I have finally finished this review. I hope you like it. And feedback will be greatly appreciated. I could always use room to be better... as cheesy as that sounds, it's true.

He DID copy it. But it's from the Nsider Forums. He wrote and posted it over there, and decided to share it here.

Wanna know how I know? Because Nsider uses that code, and he doesn't know that that code is invalid over here, except for admins. It's a nice review though.
