My cat Inkjet, my friend of more than 15 years, died two days ago. He had oral cancer, and had become unable to eat or drink. When he reached this final stage, it was clear to me that euthanizing him was a far better choice than letting him starve to death. So I talked it over with our vet, and Inky had a relatively peaceful ending with me holding him in my lap, which was his favorite place to be. I decided to write a bit about Inky and our times together, both as a way of memorializing him and to give me an outlet for the grief and sadness I have been experiencing due to his loss. Inky was almost all black (hence his name) save for 3 small patches of white on his throat, chest, and abdomen. Even his whiskers were black! As he aged, a few hairs here and there changed to grey or white, giving him a very slight salt and pepper appearance. He was small, especially for a tom, and even when fully healthy he never weighed more than 10 pounds. He had a little bony protrusion between his throat and chest that was much more pronounced than other cats I have handled. The vet said that this was just the way his rib cage was built. I brought Inkjet home from the Humane Society when he was about 3 months old, in September of 1997. I never knew his exact birthday. He was a funny little guy, a bit skittish but very playful and loving. The first few months I had him were a bit rough on Inky, as my older cat Turbo did not react overly kindly to his arrival, and he gave Inky a hard time for awhile. No serious harm was ever done and I never even saw him draw blood, but he did kinda terrorize the little guy for a time there. Inky weathered this pretty well tho, and became the most affectionate pet I've ever known. He spent quite a large portion of his life sitting on my lap. Any time I sat down, he would almost invariably jump into the chair with me within a few minutes. He also slept with me most nights, and had a tendency to follow me from room to room when I was getting things done in the apartment. When he sat on me, Inkjet had a tendency to climb onto my chest and purr at me. I think he liked having his face close to mine. He also would come to the door with me when I left the apartment, and almost invariably would be waiting for me there when he heard me coming in. I've known or lived with other cats and a couple of dogs, and none of them were as loving as my Inkjet. My experience is that each animal has their own distinct personality, and for whatever reason Inky was very very affectionate. He brought me a lot of love and happiness over the years, and I consider myself lucky to have had him as a friend. I will miss him terribly. Hey Bloggy I'm really sorry to hear about Inkjet. The loss of a dear friend (pet) is hard to go through, especially when they've been with you so long! They really become part of your family. I've lost a few through the years so can commiserate. When I was a teen, there was the family cat who was 21 (put down when kidneys started to fail), then our family bird who was 7 (gassed when started having strokes) then my own cat who was not even 4 when she developed lymph and lung cancer a few years back. Hope you have a nice bunch of photos! Luv to ya. Edited by Sereki, Mar 6 2013, 09:47 PM.

thank you Sereki. it's been a difficult experience. the worst of my life, honestly, but the pain seems to be slowly easing over time. i still think about him every day and miss him a lot. i think it's made a big difference to me that my other cat Turbo is still with me. and yes, i have some photos, tho not as many as i might have liked. |
