The key to any instrument is practice-practice-practice. Ultimately that was my downfall on the Bassoon, didn't practice enough. |

i practiced, i'm just not musically talented. never have been. can't sing or play any instruments beyond a basic level. not artistic either. can't draw or paint or anything like that. i'm very much a left-brainer.

I was forced to practice. Having had to pay for the instrument Dad made sure of it... just my lack of interest after the novelty of it all wore off was probably my downfall. I was too into horses and boys to give the lowly clarinet any of my precious attention. |

I think that happens to a lot of people who pick up instruments. Well maybe not because of horses and boys but because of interest in something. ![]() I'm not a big believer in left-right brain stuff. I think anyone can draw or write or play music if they have sufficient interest to devote time to pursuing it. |

hmm i dunno. not everyone can do everything. there are things i will never be able to do very well no matter how much time i invest. music, sports, and dancing come to mind. sure i could play some simple songs at a beginner level or throw a baseball. but it won't sound good and i'll sure never play for the Cardinals. that stuff requires skills i just don't have.

Art is subjective, whereas sports aren't. That's why I think anyone can draw, write or play music enough to please themselves. Although any person can play sports enough to play in a local league if determined enough, IMO. They just have to find the right skill level league to play in. |

Ahh what can I say? I've always been an ardent admirer of both.
I agree. And I think too many people opt for the I have no talent excuse. Could be because they don't want to make the effort (lack of interest/lack of self confidence). But hell, if you don't have the interest you could always be a couch tater. |

to please themselves, i agree, if the expectation is low enough. i was talking about there being some minimum performance requirement for social participation be it recreational or professional. as for sports, there are no leagues around here that would accomadate my level of skill. and i'm not making excuses. i just have a very clear understanding of my abilities and limits. in my case there is also a lack of interest for sports, art or music, but even if i WAS interested i wouldn't be able to do any of them. but i still say not everyone can do everything. a person with a severe physical handicap could not play most sports at any level whatsoever. an illiterate person cannot write poems. there are limits to what people can do. sometimes obstacles can be overcome, and sometimes they cannot. i don't have the strength, agility, or coordination needed to play most sports beyond the level of 'bumbling idiot'. this doesn't bother me, it's just the way it is. |

An illiterate person can still create poems, even if they can't write them down (unless you're saying they can't talk either; in which case they could still compose them in their head, unless you're saying they can't see either in which case I'm not sure we can make statements about what they perceive and can do internally). I'm skipping the sport stuff, as that was never my claim. |

well i was just using sports because i understand it better than i do art or music, and even tho there are some differences it's the same basic idea. my main point is simply that i am not musical, artistic, or athletic, even if i wanted to be.
