Actually contrabass saxophone is the lowest saxophone with bass saxophone the second lowest. The contrabass is usually over 6 foot tall. Adolph Sax had a patent for a subcontrabass sax but never built one (and I don't think one has been built; the tubax is the closest thing really and not quite the same thing as a sax). |

hmm yes, tho i had never even heard of those largest/lowest two until i went looking for info on the soprano. they are very little used i think, i had heard of and seen the main four from time to time over the years. there are some weird varieties of clarinet i had never heard of either. prolly the same with many instruments, i expect. edit: appparently the contrabass is VERY little used, as the article says only ~25 of them exist. Ah... some TNG fan I am. It is the trombone I was thinking of. I guess it would be more appropriate to say I'm lousy at knowing the brass instruments when I see one.

Saxophones are relatively new instruments and as such there's not a lot of call for them in orchestra music. Their mainstays have been in popular music and the Bass and Contrabass are just too big for practical use. Most people think the Baritone to be big.
Trombone = Brass Saxophone = woodwind

the sax is a bit of a line crosser, it's a woodwind made of brass. i've seen it used alot in jazz, blues, and ska alongside brass instruments. our school band had alto and tenor saxes, but yeah you don't normally see them in classical orchestras. |

well saxes are made of brass. they are classified as woodwinds due to how they are played, with a reed on the mouthpiece. their appearance and sound are more similar to brass, so don't feel bad.

You do see them in orchestras now sometimes; its just not much has been written specifically with the sax in mind that isn't modern. They're definitely the "johnny-come-lately" instrument in classical music. Bloggy is right that saxophone is classified as a woodwind as they are reed instruments. Woodwinds have two divisions the flutes - open flute (like the transverse flute) or closed flute (like recorders) - and the reed instruments. Reed instruments are then further subdivided into single reed (like the clarinets, saxophones) and double reed instruments (like the oboe, bassoon, crumhorn), bagpipes and free reed aerophones (like the harmonica, accordians). Brass use a metal mouthpiece to play. Woodwinds and brass make up the wind instruments as opposed to the percussion instruments. There's a definite tonal quality difference in the categories, having played the same pieces with a double reed (bassoon), single reed (baritone saxophone) and tuba (brass) the way the sound is is vastly different. The bassoon has - for lack of a better word - a very "reedy" sound created by the vibration of the double reed with a distinctly mellow musical quality. The saxophone was sharper, more crisp but with a stylized stop/start due to interacting with the reed while playing. Brass is a very sharp sound, very bright and strong with a clarity that can be quite distinctive. |

You've cleared that up quite nicely, thank you. Actually I should've remembered, considering my dad gave me a similar education when I was still in jr. high and joined the school band for a brief time. I wasn't really that good at it (clarinet) and eventually quit. But I appreciate those with the ability to play any musical instrument well. It amazes me how some people can take up just about any instrument and play it. I have a cousin who plays the fiddle professionally, but can play the piano or keyboard almost as well. I don't really like the trumpet. I don't care for its sound at all. Way too blaring. My dad tried playing it for awhile and we'd all scram when he did. |

that's funny, Gina. i also played the clarinet and was likewise not very good. i was just good enough not to get kicked out of the band and that's it. i was maybe one level above beginner.
