originally titled Mr. Gibb this film is a mixture of off-color comedy and semi-creepy whodunit. about the first third of the film is essentially a parade of Hayden Panettiere in various outfits (which is not a bad thing) that also reminded me stylistically of Election (an excellent movie). after that, it shifts in tone and content to a reasonably well done mystery. there are around half a dozen characters that are potential suspects at various points, keeping you guessing as to who the culprit is. eventually it is narrowed down to two (in my opinion) and the ending left some questions unanswered (motive among them). Panettiere essentially disappears from the film early on and the rest of the cast varies alot in the effectiveness of their performances. i did enjoy Sarah Steele's spunky portrayal of Amber throughout the movie. there were a few glitches in the story as well and the film doesn't quite manage to mesh its elements and come together as a successful whole. as a result i give The Good Student a "C" overall. |
