I made this thread for many different reasons. For one thing I've noticed that the stages are a little different at every tournament in the US. Also, there has been a bit of controversy about how stages are done in the Midwest. You can read about it here. This thread is basically to discuss the way we do stages at MN tourneys...I would just like to hear what everyone thinks about it, and if they think anything should change. Basically just a general stage discussion.

One thing that I've noticed is how certain stages are sometimes legal and sometimes banned. Like Onett for example. It's legal at the biweeklies, but banned at OMGiggles. The St. Paul biweeklies are one of the only places where I've seen Onett as a legal stage. A few other borderline banned stages are MKII, Kongo Jungle (Waterfalls), Corneria, Jungle Japes, Great Bay (sometimes legal for teams), Venom, and Princess Peach's Castle. When I say borderline that means that it varies from place to place. Yes those last three are actually legal in some places, which really surprised me and made me check out how other tourney do their stages. It seems to be a regional thing.

One more thing for people to discuss...what do you think of the way stages are chosen? Do you like advanced slob picks (the way it's currently done)? Would you rather have it done a different way? A few stages simply have the neutral 6 stages on random and that's it. No other stages.

Personally, I am fine with advanced slob picks, but I don't agree with some of the legal/banned stages. I'm probably in the minority with this next statement, but I think Rainbow Cruise and Pokefloats should be banned. They're just horrible stages to play on, with all the constant movement and the fact that many parts of the stages (and lack of edges) make it impossible for a character to recover. Check out this Pokefloats vid at 1:50. What the hell is that? lol that's just not right. Also, I do enjoy playing on Great Bay, but admittedly I don't think it's fit for singles or doubles tourney play.

I don't have a problem with Peach's Castle...the only thing I'm afraid of is that it can turn into a campfest, but it's no worse than Corneria IMO, which is legal.

The only banned DK stage is Kongo Jungle (the one with the waterfall and little island). I don't mind that stage either. It's extremely vertical like Battlefield and would benefit characters like Ganon. The little island can be annoying sometimes, that's my only complaint there.

I'd like to know what other people think of Master's ideas.

There shouldn't be any camping problems with peach's castle really...and yeah, like 56k said, that doesn't make it any worse than corneria. I'd also like to point out that if you get hit into the lava on brinstar at near 0% with fastfallers, you will receive roughly 42% damage before you're able to double jump out of it (meaning either you DI back onto the stage, which is nearly impossible because of the horrid DI, or you get pwnt). Bullshit.

I'd also like to mention (for those that don't know), MLG tournaments ban onnet in singles and doubles, and ban MKII in singles. Kongo Jungle and Peach's castle are both banned in MLG as well (singles and teams).

This doesn't mean they aren't used in other major tournaments, though. I saw a video from a recent tournament with Eddie and Tink playing on kongo jungle, and also another tournament with DJ and someone playing on Peach's castle.

Onett's banned in most places, I don't know how often MKII is banned in other places though.

On a side note, I don't think I've seen anyone at an MN tourney counterpick Pokefloats, Onett, Jungle Japes, or Brinstar in Doubles play. I can see why, though. Just something random I thought I'd point out.

Here's the latest official stage listing from MLG.

mlg

3. Singles random select stages: Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Fountain of Dreams, Dreamland 64 & Pokemon Stadium
4. Doubles random select stages: Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Rainbow Cruise, Dreamland 64 & Pokemon Stadium, DK64
5. Stages not listed on the random select list that are not banned are open for counter picks by the losing player.
6. Stages banned for Singles Only: Great Bay and Mushroom Kingdom 2
7. Stages banned for Doubles Only: Fountain of Dreams and Mute City
8. Stages banned for Singles & Doubles: Yoshi’s Island (Pipes), Fourside, Hyrule Temple, Flatzone, Brinstar Depths, Icicle Mountain, Big Blue, Mushroom Kingdom 1, Venom, Yoshi's Island 64, Peach’s Castle, and Kongo Jungle, Onett.

Yeah I've seen those, if both people agree to a stage it can overrule a ban. I think the peach's castle one was against Ken.

I actually have seen onett and floats quite a bit in MN teams tournies.

Ah, my mistake. I just never witnessed it. I still think Brinstar is the most rarely picked teams stage. Pokefloats must be hectic in teams, so much going on at once
