Monte smiled as they watched the two mules approaching.

"We could step to one side, back of the ship's bulk and cross fire if they open up. Else, we can commandeer these with barely a shot fired, provided they don't shoot first."

He turned to wink at Africa.

He slid one strap of his duffle from his shoulder, and reached into the long side pouch, drawing out a heavy shotgun.

Across the yard, the two mules started to pick up speed. There was still no other soul to be seen in any direction - folk had felt the danger on the way. With their path clear of distractions and obstacles, the two mules had a bee line set for the Elysian Dream.

As they got closer, the crew could spot the individuals now - each four wheeled vehicle had a driver on the front, and three armed goons hanging on the back. The six 'passengers' were all armed, long rifles or shotguns held before them like soldiers marching into battle.

Biff raised his hand up to block the glare. "Gorram it all! All right everyone these folks mean us harm. Kenji, Zeke, take cover and try to take out the drivers." So much for asking politely. "Africa, Monte try to flank them and we'll get them in a crossfire." Biff broke the palaver and ran down the ramp to take cover behind some shipping crates. Rifle at the ready he took careful aim and waited till the mule was just in range. He slowed his breathing and his finger entered the trigger well. There was no turning back now. Once the finger was on the trigger it meant he was committed to pulling it. Down the sights he looked as more features of the driver he was aiming at came into view. This is all happening so fast. I hope the others have moved into position. I can't wait longer.

He repeated the process again looking at the damage he'd caused so far. His goal was to take out as many as he could before they came in range of his friends. A look at their hardware now told him that they were all well in range now. He let out a small prayer to his daughter to look down on him and his and broke the plain of the trigger well again.

All hell broke loose, at least he thought it did.

Africa didn't say anything about not using guns. She took one and then gave it to Monte.

They were on a drive to violence, to be instigated because they had been cheated. She didn't quite follow all the ramifications, but Monte seemed satisfied.

This is the way things are done.

In the black. With hard and dangerous persons.

This is the way she could not learn in the Core, or the Dojo.
Not deep and isolated in the most hidden private retreats.

It had never been her way.
But it was very exciting.

Africa Chamberlain cleared her mind to action and intuitive movements.
Then she kissed 'her man', and she was ready.

Zeke scampered behind a crate and checked over his pistol, trying to stop his hands from shaking. He jumped when Biff started firing, but quickly took control of himself.

"Stop being such a coward"

The pilot frowned; annoyed at himself by being so scared. This wasn't his first gunfight, not by far. Zeke had tried to stay on legal, straight ships as best he could, but occasionally that wasn't an option.

He momentarily put his gun on the ground so he could clench and unclench his hands a few times, working away the stress. When he picked it up again, his hands no longer shook and he was resolute. He knew he wasn't a great shot, but that didn't mean he wouldn't try his damnedest to help his friends.

Zeke carefully aimed down the sight of his pistol, and focused on his breathing.

"Take out ze drivers. Let's do zis."

Bullets broke through the silent tension that had been clogging up the air, seemingly slicing through the afternoon humidity as they hurtled toward the mules. Seeing the muzzle flash and then hearing the shots, the ruffians holding tight to the back of the archaic wheeled vehicles started yelling. Those who could, with only one hand to hold themselves steady, tried to return fire.

One mule lost one of its passengers early, a young woman who took one of Biff's bullets and went flying off, landing in the dust of the shipyard road. The vehicle swerved in response, another few bullets missing narrowly as the driver did all he could to avoid getting hit.

Finally, the two mules were in range.

One skidded to a halt, almost flipping with inertia, as its occupants dived off and, guns blazing, ran for cover.

The second, now missing one of its passengers, roared ahead. The drivers face broke into a sadistic grimace as he gunned the engine, heading straight for the crates Biff was using for cover... at full speed.

Neither of the two small crews seemed to spot Africa and Monte making away behind the nearby parked vessels.

Monte waited until the second vehicle had passed and then dashed out behind it. He brought the shotgun up and fired two rounds of shot at the men as they ran for cover. Unfortunately for them, cover was on the wrong side of the road. They would be protected from Zeke and Biff, but not Africa and Monte. He didn't wait to see if his shots hit, although he felt they were good. He barely hesitated as he continued across the road, ducking behind a corner of a building, behind where the second vehicle had stopped. He rechambered another round and fired at the driver of the nearest vehicle. Ducking back, he took a moment to check on Africa.

"Over here! " he waved the barrel of the gun in his direction, hoping she could slide in behind him.

Biff stopped shooting when he heard the big shotgun blast pierce the air from Monte's weapon. His eyes widened as he saw the intent of the mule who, when his rifle found an early mark, was now a man less. Biff sprung to action and in one move jumped aways from the crates throwing a knife at the sadistic driver. As the crates shattered a splintered piece of wood cut his leg. Not deep enough to be concerned but enough to let him know he was cutting this too close to the edge. Rolling clear of the rubble he ran limping towards another place of cover. Firing his side arm at the wrecked mule and anyone not friendly on his way. He just had to keep their heads down enough to get him behind something solid again.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

Africa stayed just to the side and behind of Monte's hip as he fired. He'd turned a little in one direction and Africa's intuitive minded turned to action. Africa ran and leapt to the second vehicle. A hand grip nearly tore her arm from its socket, but she absorbed the shock and moved to swing up and into the second vehicle.

Once inside the occupants reacted, Africa reacted to them.
They had seemed in unison in dealing death outside of the vehilce, but within it her body turned to a harsh wind among steadfast trees. As a wind moved and turned and twisted, the trees stood alone in the grip of their roots. Their branches may sway, but their core stood in one place.

Africa did not. She was the wind among the trees. She was the cyclone amidst the forest.

A moved of a shoulder and Africa moved to strike an open handed chop to an elbow.
A look of surprise and a gun swept to point at her and Africa moved to grip a wrist and turn the shooter's motion into a toss out of the vehicle.
Others moved while Africa found an opening of a strike to the driver's ear, a simple kick that would move her to the other side of the vehicle. The driver's reaction would be unkown, the vehicle progress would a random event.

Even as she initiated the strike she realized a miscalculation. The driver was not slowing, the chaos from a slowing vehicle would be something she might have been able to deal with, but the driver had no intention of slowing.

It would be a wreck. A crash.

Chamberlain's body relaxed to react to the violent end of the vehicle's speed.

Bullets flew in all directions as hired guns dropped left and right. The mule crew who had unloaded were pinned down by the collective fire of Biff and Monte. The other vehicle, unaware of the bloody end awaiting it, powered on.

As Biff dived out of the way, finding new cover, he caught a glimpse of the woman diving onto the moving vehicle. What happened next only occurred over milliseconds, though time seemed to slow down as the vehicle swerved. With the driver incapacitated by Africa, the vehicle began to tilt slightly before one wheel hit the remnants of an old shipping crate.

The entire mule exploded upwards, and forwards, and flipped.

Monte, as he made his way around to the flank of the last two shooters from the other mule, heard a crashing of metal and smashing glass.

The first mule was now upside down and slammed up against the hull of the Elysian Dream, it's occupants thrown about the dirt all around. Very few of them moved.

Monte ducked sideways from his cover, shotgun charged and aiming at the two punsters still active. He fired one round to remind them to stay out of sight, while striding frantically across to the wreck snuggled up to the belly of the Dream. Sweat broke out as he realized Africa was inside; probably badly damaged.

He grimaced, jacked another round into his shotgun and fired at one of the men on the ground who had started to crawl toward a weapon that had fallen out of the wreck.

"No, you don't, not going nowhere."

He slid up to the side of the vehicle and with his back to the frame, banged his elbow against the fractured sidewall.

"Africa! Love! Are you alright?"

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

It was a vehicle crash.

It was chaos.

It was violence.

For Africa Chamberlain.

It was , . , . EPIPHANY

The safest place in a vehcile crash would be double shoulder strapped in with a seat belt. But the soft crack of a spine against her hand, - just as the vehicle started to to flip, there was no where close to the second or two of time for such a safety precaution. There was only instinct.

No, she could never see it as that as she would think back on it later. IT was not danger.
It was ...

It was...
Exhileration!

Escape the vehicle, a strong push of her legs to go in the opposite direction. From someone observing, it might have seemed . . impossible. But it was survival. Africa Chamberlain wanted to live. To live and enjoy this most exciting of moments again. This... this...

This exhileration. This thing that was....
It was LIFE.

Her body landed much like a beautific slide into home plate, for those that know that still popular game of baseball. Or perhaps it was perfection in flight for one without wings. But she had wings. Angelic wings?

Africa's body hit the ground and tarmac hard but at such an angle that her right leg curved under her body. Calf and thigh slid along and caused painful abrasions that tore her skin from her body. Deeper then to the muscle.

Her right arm tugged and clawed to support her lower body from the pain.
It did not. Fleshed burned at the contest between Africa Chamberlain and the forces of the verse: friction, mass and speed.

Her body stopped, right leg and arm were a bloody looking mess. Though arteries and vessels were not life threatening, the bloody torn tissue looked horrific.

She had killed. She had survived.
She had protected her.... crew.
Yet only one thing came to mind.

Where.... WHerrr. Warea ware.

where was..... his voice was there. But where was he?
He called out..... africa..... africa... my love....
my love? yes... his love... where?

She tried to stand from where her body had stopped just in front of their ship.
Her ship?

Her love?

"Monte... " she whimpered, as she stood.

There was only one thing she wanted now.

Monte.

And to feel this, this... exhileration again...

' sweet lord... who am I now?

Biff's eyes widened as he saw the mule explode upward tossing Africa through the air like a rag doll. With the eerie silence that followed such loud dealings it was easy to to mark the scene. As he came out of his war fog he double tapped a body to be sure as he walked over to Monte.

"Go to her. I'll cover these guys." He targeted the downed men kicking their weapons further towards the Dreams ramp.

"Zeke see if the mule that didn't go up in flames is salvageable!" Biff shouted over the ringing in his ear. His leg was feeling better already. Good. If that's the only injury I get today I'll be happy with that.

Seeing the crash, the miraculous agility of the woman diving off the vehicle, the merciless blast Monte delivered the man on the ground, and the gunslinger now closing in on them, the two remaining thugs made peace with their duties and fled. Ducking from cover to cover, the pair quickly turned tail and fled across the ship yard, seeking only solitude from the violence.

Zeke, satisfied that the danger was no longer present, stared at the handgun in his hands before careful placing it on one of the Dream's nearby struts and making his way across the yard toward the non-crashed mule. His eyes darted nervously at Monte and Africa as they came together. The woman didn't look good.

On the ramp, revolver in hand, Kenji covered Biff. His voice was without sentiment, yet compared to the explosion of chaos and violence that preceded it, the words came out soft.

"Is she ok? Is everyone ok?"

Monte watched for a brief moment as the two laggards made their run for sanctuary. He shook his head slowly, allowing his shotgun muzzle to lower toward the ground before he turned back and saw Africa trying to stand previously hidden by the overturned mule. He went to her as she stumbled once, regained her stance, back to him. His weapon swung over his shoulder on its sling just as he reached her, his arms outstretched. He saw her head start to turn and her leg... was that blood? ... slowly give out. He caught her before she could fall again.

"I'm here, I have you."

He scooped her up, gazed into her eyes and carried her up the ramp into the ship.

Zeke watched Monte carry Africa up the ramp, his face a mask of worry. He had to resist the urge to hurry over to them and see if he could help. He had other duties however; Biff had given him an order, and whilst Zeke was not naturally a dismissive person, he respected the older man enough to do what he said in a time of need.

The pilot sprinted over the the remaining mule and lithely hopped into the drivers seat. He flicked a few switches and powered up the engines, then scrambled over the seats to bend his head over the back to watch and make sure the engines weren't damaged. The mule wobbled at little as it began floating a foot from the ground once more, but it showed no obvious issues. Zeke scrambled back into the driver's seat and carefully manoeuvred it over to Biff, serving it this way and that as he did to test the handling systems were undamaged. He stopped the mule and cut the engines once he was right next to Biff.

"She's a but dinged up, but zis mule vill get us where we vant to go! Kenji, if you sit next to me; I need directions, but make no mistake my friends, ve shall have your tied up friend delivered and ve shall have our money before you can blink!"

Zeke gave his friends a huge grin, his eyes glinting with an almost manic energy. It was obvious that the German was now in his element.

"You might be able to shoot a lot better than me...but zis?" He patted the controls in front of him. "Zis is somesing no-vun can beat me at."

Kenji grimaced, yet stayed quiet as he watched Monte pull the limp woman up and walk into the ship. These two, despite where they came from or what their intentions were... they were part of this now.

"Med is on the lower deck, first to your right..." His voice trailed off as Monte made his way across the cargo bay. Kenji just nodded, turning back to his crew members. Biff didn't look so good, either.

"Biff, why not get yourself seen to. I'm... I'm sorry this went down so fast. The sooner we get this payload off the ship..." He glanced across the ramp at the unconcious, tied up bounty, "... the better." He then holstered Big Iron and strode to his quarry, lifting the huge man up over one shoulder.

"Zeke and I, we can get him to where we're going. I'll make contact, get the coin... you catch up if you can. otherwise, I'll be in touch." He tapped a handheld radio to the side of his head, then pointed to its twin sitting on the main console of the cargo bay.

Time was against them, so it was time to split up.

Africa Chamberlain.

She looked up at Monte's face. "Mm." Africa smiled. "Not the most perfect landing, but as they say if you can walk away from it...." She turned her head and looked down at the deck."Oh" a giggle. Adrenaline had kicked in.

Reaching up she put her hand on Monte's face. "I think I'm going to need some TLC." She grimaced from the abrasions. "And some pain mess."

Biff looked over the mule. Zeke was in his element. Good. He stumbled a little looking at the seats that were left on the mule.

Kenji

"Biff, why not get yourself seen to. I'm... I'm sorry this went down so fast. The sooner we get this payload off the ship, the better."
Biff nodded. Kenji and Zeke were the better for wear here out of all of them.

"Okay I will. You two be careful. We'll be here when you get back." Biff began to limp up the ramp after Monte and Africa. "Okay friends, welcome to the Elysian Dream. First stop the med bay. Heh heh."

Once in the med bay he began to clean and dress his wounds. They weren't that bad but they bled more then they should've from his whiskey intake during his game. Once he was sure he wasn't going to pass out and his leg was steady enough to be worth walking on went over to the couple to see if they needed anything. "Do either of you need any help with your wounds. I'm no doc but I get by." He looked at the mystery that was Africa. "You! I have never seen anyone thrown the way you were and be giggling and... hell conscious. That was one hell of a feet of acrobatics, bad landing or not." When all was said and done in the med bay Biff looked at them both sincerely. "Thank you both, so much. Without you two we would have been dead or dying. If you'll follow me I can show you to our quarters. You have your pick of the empty ones."

Monte smiled at Africa's jesting. He sat her on one of the med beds, and studied her eyes, pulling the lids open and moving one finder from side to side to see if she was following it. He felt her scalp for wounds, and then studied her other bruises.

"Okay, but where else does it hurt? You took a pretty bad spill there. Doesn't look like any breaks, and I can't tell if you might have a concussion. Not a doc, not me. Just had a bit of field testing. How are you feeling?"

He dug out some pain shots and handed them to Biff.
