AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN She sipped her tea and nursed the same drink as Monte, though she was still on her first one. The ice had nearly melted. Without conscious thought she remained aware of the activity in the Jack of Diamonds. The Oriental that seemed to have a mild interest in them, the flurry of fun a the gambling tables. It brought an amused smile to her face at their choice of fun. Taking a few coins from her pocket, "What game are they playing Monte?" Always something new to be tried. A turn at gambling seemed a worthwhile adventure of the smallish sort. The thrill of the risk she had read about and observed from time to time. Just what was the attraction? |

"Calamity Jane? Ha! Nice reference Zeke." Biff walked off the ramp and stood planetside once again. This place seemed to put the nightmare of Deadwood behind him like the fog of a dream. He kept an ear out for what the dockhand was telling Zeke. He didn't think the man was going to cheat Zeke but better safe then sorry. Plus he liked to know what was going on with the ship. Biff's ears perked up when he heard about the Jack of Diamonds. Just then Kenji comes down. Biff nodded to Kenji. It was nice to be so stress free to be able to nap. It had been too long since Biff felt this good and was glad to see his friends share the rewards. Coin is nice, but this respite is worth it's wait in credits. "Sounds good Kenji. Zeke it looks like it's you and me for those drinks. Now how about we hit up that Jack of Diamonds I have heard so much about? Biff chuckled. "I haven't had coin to gamble with in a long time. Let's see how rusty I am." |

Monte looked over at the game in progress, or rather the backs of the small crowd gathered around the activity. A shout rang out, followed by several other cheers and jeers. He caught a glimpse of a handful of credit notes passing between parties. "Can't tell for sure, but it sure is popular. Looks like side bets being made as well. There are many possibilities. Just can't tell from here. You want to check it out?" He smiled as he let his eyes drift back over to his companion. The clink of coins in her hand gave him a curious thrill. He had played the tables before, had a way with cards and dice. If this was the typical game of chance, there was big money running, and it sounded like a high stakes player was in control. His curiosity brought him out of his seat, and he extended one hand to Africa.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN Africa took Monte's hand, clinking the coins in her other. She whispered to him as they approached the gaming table. The rules of most of the common games she knew, but there was more to these games. "So the finesse involved, it a sort of role playing isn't it. Convincing others, bending them to your will? Reading others?" A smile filled her face for a moment as she looked up at him then a brief look at the Oriental gentleman that had seemed to have an interest in them. All things flowed through her, she let her mind open to complete mindfulness. And yet there was a playful adventure tingling in her belly. The use of her training for such a decadent purpose as taking money from others.

Zeke walked into the bar advised to them by the deckhand, Biff right behind him. Zeke breathed in the heady musk of alcohol, sweat and all the other scents Zeke deeply missed. There wasn't much planetside that kept Zeke's interest for long. His hobbies were focused entirely around ships, so he spent most of his time anyway either flying, repairing or just tinkering with things for the hell of it. If, rare as it was Zeke was bored of being on a ship, or a crew mate wanted him off for whatever reason, the closest bar was always Zeke's port of call. He was by no means a heavy drinker, and despised most liquors. He liked going to bars near ports for the people, and the fact that they also usually stocked the beers he liked. Zeke loved to talk to people he'd never met before, to hear their stories about all the places they've been, things they'd done. Zeke strode over to the bar itself and leant against it. He ordered a drink and began casually chatting with the guy next to him. He wished Biff well on his gambling endeavours, but the throw of the dice had never enticed the pilot. |

There were a handful of small round tables running tables, though most of the action seemed to be centered around one velvet lined playing area where seven men sat with their dealer. It looked like some kind of poker, though maybe a local variant - everyone had three cards in their hand, and seemed to be able to trade them off with bets, while seven cards were evenly laid out in the middle of the table. Each player at the table seemed to know one another from their idle chatter, and the coloured chips in front of each indicated it wasn't a low stakes game by any means. Another, smaller, less occupied table to one side had some dice games going, with a pair of old timers who looked like out of town ranchers were quietly sipping at their drinks as the dwindling piles of chips before them slowly disappeared. At the bar an icy bottle was served up for Zeke as he started to make small talk with another gentleman who'd been in for a late lunch. The pair spoke of small things, and Zeke soon learned a little about the city and some of the regulars in the bar. |

Biff strode into the Jack Of Diamonds full of energy and swagger. He walked up to the barkeep and ordered a bottle of whiskey, one he knew was smooth and didn't float straight to ones head quickly. With Zeke off to visit the locals Biff took his newly adopted bottle and glass over towards the game tables. Seeing the higher stakes game intrigued Biff but the table seemed much too crowded for his liking. Instead he introduced himself to a couple older gents playing dice. Sitting down where he could keep an ear out for the other table he put his glass down filled it an inch and downed it. Then he poured three fingers into the glass for sipping. Looking at the other gentlemen he offered a drink. "Well my friends lets see what we can do here." Feeling great with a fresh warmth from the whiskey Biff paid up for some chips. The game was on. |

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN Looking at the money the option of the high stakes game seemed out of the question. The dice game seemed to be more a simple matter of luck. Africa was more interested in the psychology and mathematical applications of the high stakes game. She pocketed her coins and still holding Monte's hand, watched the big game. |

Biff took up a position at one of the tables and planted himself down firmly, breath crisp with alcohol. The other players nodded a greeting, one man offering to shake the newcomers hand as the cards were dealt. "Only a few hours on the soil, huh? You can always tell with you spacers." It was the man opposite Biff who spoke, giving a cheeky smile as he threw a couple of white chips onto the table before him. He was a portly middle aged man, a dusty rancher hat propped on the back of his chair. He wore an old, navy three piece suit with numerous small marks and tears. "What's word in the skies, then? And what brings folk like yourself to Athens anyhow?" The man nodded to Biff, but then also to Zeke where he was at the bar, clearly noting the pair had arrived together. As the next hand began and Biff glanced down at his cards - a pair of Queens and a Joker - a man from across the room approached to join the small crowd who were looking on at the game. He'd been keeping an eye on Monte and Africa since they'd come downstairs and now he was making his move. "Madame. And sir. Enjoying the afternoon games I presume?" His breath smelled - like alcohol and mold - and his accent was one the pair hadn't heard before, a hybrid between a number of Earth-That-Was European and Asian accents. As if his words couldn't settle on just one. His odour and odd dress and odd accent were enough to draw attention to the man, but nobody else seemed to pay him any heed.

Monte kept one eye on the game, while lightly gripping Africa's hand in his. His attention split between the card game and the stranger, he half smiled. "Just got in, heard the fun these blokes are having and thought we'd check it out. Played much yourself?" Monte took a moment to study the man, checking for obvious and not so obvious bulges, as well as the man's build and potential danger sense. ![]() |

The stranger shrugged noncommittally, taking a drag on the roll up cigarette hanging lazily from one of his fingerlessly gloved hands. "I play a game here. I play a game there. Not much of a man who gambles, yes?" Hand in hand with his strange accent, the man's English was severely broken. There were no signs of concealment anywhere that Monte could see. |

Biff took another large gulp from his glass noting the glint in the mans eyes as he drank. Biff enjoyed this particular whiskey for it's weakness. He could drink a lot of it and keep his head but he didn't have to act sober. Looking the fool while remaining in control was his go to formula for gambling. "Skies were pretty quiet on our way here. Nice and smooth sailing. Just here to finish a job and find a new one to keep us flying." He gave his head a shake as if he was having a difficult time focusing on his cards and inwardly smiled as the two men were buying it. |

The portly fellow nodded at the small talk, taking a long sip from his glass before contemplating his next words. "And work... what does that mean to you? As a spacefarer, I mean? I... you know... sir, what is it that you and yours do for a living?" Again, the card players eyes darted to Zeke over at the bar, as if checking up on him. At the bar a second round of drinks were being laid down, courtesy of Zeke's new chatting friend. The man, who had introduced himself as Merl, looked more like a rancher than anything else. Given that the Dream had landed in the centre of the metro, Zeke somehow doubted that. "Naw, just another workin' stiff. Got a bit of security detail kind of payroll goin', you see. Lot's'a folk in the 'big city' pay a lot for a gun here and there. Just last week I got a call askin' for some'a my expertise." He pats the old fashioned revolver on his hip. "Some fella named Markus Joseph, looking out for his business ventures or somewhat." Merl gave a laugh. "Who gives as shit what it is, you hear? My point is, the pay's good." His breath, intoxicated by the several whisky's the man had clearly enjoyed before Zeke's arrival, smelled almost toxic to the out of town pilot. |

"I find a game once in awhile, but right now, my finances wouldn't cover the opening bid. Still, the draw is in the social context, agreed?" Monte turned his attention back to the game, just as two more cards were turned over. He smiled at Africa and with a squeeze of her hand, commented. "Ok, so now the Witch is in play. That doubles the bets on any higher plays, and drops the lowest two cards from the spread. This can get interesting." ![]() |

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN Taking note of the oder of the man that had taken up conversation with Monte Africa showed no emotion of his odd complexities of scent. The man had an interest in them though, he'd looked them over and then approached. Friendliness seemed to not fit, there was a purpose them being singled out from everyone else. She looked at him as he spoke for tell tale signs of deceit or hidden motives. His unique stature made him difficult to read. Not so several of the players at the table. At the turn of the cards one player had a slight movement of a finger away from the center of the table - worry at the turn of events? Another looked over the other players, nostrils ever so slightly enlarged involuntarily, excite at the prospects he was trying to read the others. Another made a false gesture of leaning back as though things had not gone well, false in that his eyes focused and looked at the cards - calculating the surety of his own hand? Monte was taking stock of the stranger too, yet he remained relaxed seeing no immediate threat. Africa considered sharing her thoughts on the tells of the players but did not. Something impolite about even a whisper that might give away the secrets of the players. |

Biff played a cautious raise on the smallish side. Took another sip and thought over the question. "We take what work we can. Mostly above board but we've tried our hand at some honest smuggling and a bounty or two here and there." He spoke mainly for himself and his past but he wanted to feel out the portly man's question which seemed subtly loaded. Biff sat back and taking another drink silently took a new interests in the man, sizing him up assessing him and his companions for threats. The room, which he did a brief visual sweep of coming in, would be next in greater detail as well as the rest of the patrons. |

The dealer had been in the middle of trying to get a bet out of the man to Biff's right when the words froze the table in place. A few seconds passed as the scene seemed to entirely freeze, revolving around Biff. Around the word 'smuggling'. Then, as quickly as things had frozen up, they erupted again. Laugher boomed out of the portly man. "Some honest smuggling indeed!" He shouted, rocking back and forth with a dangerous hilarity that caught on to the rest of the players. It was the laughing of 'civilised' men, of business men. Of men who had no honest idea who was seated at the table with them. Taking a moment to compose himself, as the players and those watching on all had a good laugh, the man of foul breath nodded in agreement before looking down at his palm, where Monte could see something was scrawled in pen - such a primitive method of book keeping - and then leaned in to whisper into the man's ear. "Indeed. So Mr Furlong has been many time since a pay cheque then?" He leaned back as the commotion around them died down, raising an eyebrow at Africa as they met eyes, despite the fact she had unlikely heard him. |

Biff joined in on the laughter. These men were the connections to future jobs. They were the ones who couldn't be bothered getting their hands dirty. Plus they thought he was getting blitzed. His hand would be steady if he needed it. The man finally bet and Biff raised fifty. He took another sip taking note of a man making eyes at a woman around the table. I love these places. |

Monte tried to surreptitiously scan the writing on the man's hand before he folded it away from sight. As the laughter died down, Monte grunted with a smile. "We get along here and there. Are you offering a job?" Monte turned more attention to the man, gazing into his eyes to see if he could read the man's intentions. It wouldn't hurt to hear him out if it were a job, yet something about his presence caused some hesitation. A sudden memory echoed back: Searching through a cluttered shop, just looking for bits and pieces that might be of use. The lights go out; a crashing blackness that leaves Monte unable to move. On awakening, he is confined, accused of being someone else, and threatened. It wasn't a good experience, and it would make sure he would be shades more careful in future dealings.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN Africa smiled at the stranger as he spoke to Monte yet raised an eyebrow as he looked at her. She took a demure posture, reflecting that Monte was her man and he spoke for them both. A subtle change in her, but not difficult; a position of humility was easy for her. Yet it did nothing to alter her awareness. Focusing without effort, she remained focused in her usual state of awareness and then moved away from Monte and the man with which he spoke. Moving around the table somewhat she watched the game, but could now see the stranger as he spoke, though she could not hear she would be able to get the gist of much of what he said. Her interest in the game remained, glances as they players bet, their reactions to each bet. Though with little knowledg of the subtleties of the game is seemd several of those playing believed they were in a position of strength. Interesting, she thought, this could be very interesting. Enough knowledge of gambling let her know that this could be what was called... a big showdown? |
