Siobhán trotted along just behind Ian, her shorter legs having to work harder than his to keep up.

"Ugly and fast, I can manage that," she acknowledged.

Listening to one half of a conversation was not a lot of fun and the content didn't concern her so she carried on through to the bridge. Sonya was already there with another woman she took to be Glory's pilot.

"Hey, lover," she greeted Sonya quietly, planting a kiss on her head. "Got an information on damaged systems yet?" she added, getting straight into business. While she waited for Sonya's answer she went to the side and looked at the status displays, beginning her analysis of what work needed to be done and in what order by the information or lack of it on the displays. Some were clearly just dead and a lot of the others were showing red or amber.

"Seems I have a bit of work to do," she commented.

ABE - Cabin #2 - Beth's Room

Abe was checking out the photo since no one had been answering her, trying to figure out where it might have been taken. The chance of actually guessing the right place was near impossible, but it helped entertain her mind.

Finally, Beth came back in and kneeled next to her.

"Hey Doc," Abe said with a small smile. "Just the person I wanted to see."

She watched as the doctor set down a piece of equipment next to her.

"We're going to have to move you which means getting you to your feet. I'll help you as much as I can. The main thing is not to disturb that needle while we do so,"

"On my feet? I am good with that. Floor's hard and I have had enough rest."

Abe tried not to think about the needle that was still sticking out of her body.

"We're going to roll you on to your side and then over into a crawling position and then help you stand up from there. That will minimise bending of your torso.

Abe nodded and then cracked a joke.

"Didn't ya tell me I had to take it easy and now here ya are trying ta get me ta do yoga or somethin'."

"Are you ready?"

Abe nodded and rolled onto the side that didn't have a needle sticking out of it. That wasn't so bad. It was the pushing herself up into a crawling position that sapped the breath out of her.

"I'm OK." she said painfully, trying to reassure Beth. Then she cracked another joke. "Probably need some help now. Now, I guess I am glad that I didn't grow up ta be super tall and that no matter how much I eat, I don't seem ta gain weight."

With Beth's help and an awful lot of groaning on her part, Abe got onto her feet although she almost felt like she was going to pass out. Before they started walking, she looked at Beth.

"Where's Ian at? Is he OK?" she asked. Then she added on another question. "Where was that picture taken? I have a bet with myself ta see if I can guess. Wonder if I got even close."

She took in a breath as she leaned on Beth.

"I didn't mean ta pry, but it was on the floor and I had nothing else better ta do," she reassured her. "Ya might think about investin' in some decent undergarments. Ya got a nice figure. Sylandra would probably appreciate it."

Yes, apparently pain made her loose lipped.

And talkative.

Abe said: "Didn't ya tell me I had to take it easy and now here ya are trying ta get me ta do yoga or somethin'."

"Oh, this is the easy bit, wait until I get you to climb up on to the top bunk and swing across to the other," Beth replied, surprising herself. Abe was not the only one to be suffering from runaway lips. "It's the stress," she told herself. Certainly the situation was not one she had had to contend with in her nice clean hospital on her nice clean planet oh so many lifetimes ago. There the triaging, the cleaning and the preparation had been done for her and she had never had to face the reality of how the patient had ended up on her table.

Abe said: "Where's Ian at? Is he OK?" ... "Where was that picture taken? I have a bet with myself ta see if I can guess. Wonder if I got even close." ...

The questions came thick and fast and it took Beth a moment to sift out the most important.

"The Captain is fine," she reassured Abe. "Last I saw he was heading for the bridge with a tech in tow." She didn't think it politic to mention that the tech in question was a rather pretty, vivacious young woman.

Abe said: ".... Ya got a nice figure. Sylandra would probably appreciate it."

A renewed surge of concern ran through Beth with the reminder of Sylandra. She had managed, if not to forget, to at least to push into the background her concern for Sylandra. Now it came rushing back and it took all of her professionalism to keep hold of Abe and not run to find Sylandra.

Then as Abe's statements sunk in, Beth blushed bright red and not just because of the intimate nature of the suggestion. She hadn't been told before that she had a nice figure and she wasn't used to compliments of that sort. Those two reasons alone were enough but there was the third; that at least one person had noticed something between her and Sylandra and had jumped to a conclusion that Beth was only slowly working her way towards.

"Can I confide in her?" Beth asked herself. It wasn't something she could answer in the affirmative, not yet, she hadn't known Abe long enough. There was a question that she could ask though.

"Is ... is it that obvious?" she asked tentatively.

Still outside the Bridge

"She was a friend Ian. .... A friend of the ship too, it's just her and Bosch...

Ian was momentarily stunned and leaned back against the wall of the doorway to the Bridge. Siobhán had already passed him by and gone into the Bridge, calling Sonya her Lover.

"Friends dont cut off their Friends fingers and use a blow torch to stop the bleeding!"

Mike may not have heard, or cared for that matter. Ian knew what it was like to loose friends and family.

"Gorram it! Did you talk to her, did you even give her a chance?"

That did it. Anger swelled up in his heart and he saw things through a tinge of red. Ian was taken aback at the reality of the statement and almost smiled, shaking off the mirth of the moment as he turned back toward the Med Bay.

"Giver her a chance?!"

He yelled. It came through the Comm bud clearly. It could also be heard through the open door to the Med Bay.

He was on the move as he spoke. The wind of his passing bellowing the tails of his Duster around him.

"Had I waited Bosch would be DEAD as well as maimed. Is that ok with you, Mike?"

He paused for just a second, halfway across the Cargo Bay.

"Renwick had just Bar-B-Qued the last stump of finger she had cut off of Bosch. Umm-mum!! The sweet smell of cooked flesh. De-lis-ious!!"

Another pause. He was near the doorway, his red tinged vision tunneling. The sound of his voice coming from outside the Med bay was almost as loud as the voice over the Comm unit.

"Renwick ... Do you know what she said?! 'Pity. I was hoping to have more time with her.' Then she took a gun and was gonna put a bullet through Bosch's Brain Pan!"

He entered the Med Bay and pointed at Bosch while looking as Mike.

"Tell her that her hand doesn't mean anything to you. Look at it!"

The last was not a request. It came out hard, the anger coming out as a verbal venom.

"Look at Her! Tell her its OK to have her fingers cut off. To have them burned so someone can have more time to cause pain before they bleed out. Tell Her that it's a shame that She was the one to have survived."

He took a breath.

"Remember Tyler Lyndon! Remember what he done to Reese the first time? Took her finger and sent it back to us by post! Was that OK too? Then he slit her throat and left her for dead. No wonder she's mad at us. Mike, had I waited, they would both have been dead."

One more breath.

"You look at Bosch and tell her that its a shame that she survived, that she had done to her what was done ... then you kin get yer stinkin Pi-Gu off my ship!"

His voice went from very loud to deadly quiet.

He felt something pop, rather than heard it, then he felt a tear run down his face.

Didn't they understand? They're all family to me. Mike you're my brother. Bosch is my sister. How could you even think that this was ok.

Over the silence now in the room, he could hear the rhythmic rush of waves in the background.

Time takes a toll on everyone. Ian is no different. Stress is Time's Assassin. Doing things slow. Doing things fast. Once in a while, a body needs to rest. That is something Ian doesn't do enough of.

His face was more red than pale. The papers he had under his arm before were being crushed in his left hand as he pointed at Bosch with his right. He stood, rigid and shaking. The whites of his eyes were tinged red from a broken blood vessel in each eye. The tear that trailed down his face was a tear of Blood.

Give him a Scythe to hold instead of papers and he would look like Death ready to claim another Soul.

Abe was surprised when Beth quipped back at her.

"Oh, this is the easy bit, wait until I get you to climb up on to the top bunk and swing across to the other,"

That just made Abe smile. Somewhere under that mousy exterior was someone with some fire.

"The Captain is fine," "Last I saw he was heading for the bridge with a tech in tow."

Abe let out a sigh of relief.

"Ya know I worry 'bout him. How could I not? I love him. I just wish he'd take my advice from time ta time. I couldn't do much this time on account of taking that bullet point blank, but I just don't want him ta get himself dead."

She started taking the first steps toward the med bay. Luckily it wasn't far. Then Abe noticed that when she mentioned Sylandra, Beth blushed deep red.

"Is ... is it that obvious?"

Abe snorted again.

"Beth, it is my job ta notice the details around me. Of course it is obvious, but maybe not ta everyone. Not sure if Ian has picked up on it yet. Or Mike. Bosch probably knows. She's quick," she explained. "I'm happy for ya. Having someone ta love who will love ya back? Ain't nothin' better."

Abe was about to say something else, but someone yelled into the comm. She knew Ian's voice and whatever was happening was not good. She could see him ahead as Mike and Ian seemed to be in a verbal conflict.

"Can we move faster?" she asked Beth. "I need to get ta him."

Luckily it wasn't but a few steps.

"You look at Bosch and tell her that its a shame that she survived, that she had done to her what was done ... then you kin get yer stinkin Pi-Gu off my ship!"

Oh, this was bad. Ian was threatening to throw Mike off the ship. She looked over and saw a pretty blonde woman helping Bosch. But Ian... he was wrecked. His face was red with anger, papers were clutched in his left hand and his body was as rigid as could be.

"Ian?" she said softly, hopefully having a calming effect of the room. She let go of Beth and took a step or two of her own and stood in front of him. She reached up and wiped the tear from his face. "Beth said I need ta have this vaccum thing ta help my lung. Ya wanna help me with it? She's kinda busy and it seems a bit full in here."

Becker remained slumped against the wall, still a little weak and still a little exhausted emotionally. Somewhere between that, he had stopped caring about what he was saying, and Ian's word worked well for drumming up anger. This wasn't the same as Reese. He looked up from his vulnerable position.

"And who is she Ian?" Began Mike, jerking his head to Bosch. "I never wanted to question, but the first time we met her, she was trying to kill you. That's what we took in. As family. And since then, I've feel like I've seen at least three different people inside her. Beyond her control. And the things I've heard her say. What *she* wanted to do to Renwick. What she did to her husband. She might be getting of light against him." Becker was ranting, maybe a little too far, and maybe further from the point he wanted to make.

Mike looked to Bosch and shook his head. "I don't think you know who the bad guy is here."

"And maybe I'm starting to see where Reese was coming from." A part of him regretted saying that. The rest of him would catch up later. It wasn't the kind of thing Mike would ever say with a sound mind.

"There's so many..." He couldn't list all the things that were getting to him. Reese, Cole and Renwick were a highlight of a much longer list.

His eyes dropped to the floor. Right now he had little sympathy for Ian, or Abe's interjection. He was far too caught up in his own feelings. "I'm not biting my tongue on this one. I want off."

Ian was aware of Abe being there, but on some level, didn't really. He heard Becker's word's. He saw the anger and the hurt and felt it like a physical blow. He slumped back against the door frame, knowing it was there and needing its support.

Just for a second.

The sound of the ocean went away as his blood pressure dropped. The red mist cleared, though his eyes would show the signs for a few days.

He pulled himself back to his full height, his voice staying low.

"Fine. ... We happen to be docked to two ships at this moment. Pick one."

Somewhere, not all that deep inside, Ian knew that would be a bad idea. He had come to need Mike. He knew that in most things Mike was his rock on board.

"Maybe it is me. Maybe I'm ta blame. I've offered second chances to so many people that it was bound to bite me mine in the end. ... You know why Tyler snapped? I wouldn't take him on as crew because he said that he would put the his life above ours. That he would let others die instead of taking the bullet so we could get away. Maybe Ryobi never had a chance to choose ... not until I hired her. Since then she has never been against me or the Glory."

He paused, looking around the room, at the two doctors, at Abe, at Ryobi and at Mike. Reason slowly made it was back to him as he spoke and he saw a possible light at the end of a very dark tunnel he had flown into.

"Once the Doc's release you, you can go. Cant let it be said that the Captain a the Glory kicked a man off when his was down."

He looked at Beth and Ayden hoping that they would catch on to what he was trying to do. He hoped Mike would use this time to change his mind about leaving. Ian knew that he really needed him. He needed Bosch too.

"I dont expect the Doctors to let a man go in your condition until he's fully able. I'm not sayin fully cured, just able. In your condition, it might take a full day or two. Best you lay back down til you get your strength back. Cant have you passin out on yer first day on a new ship."

He finally looked at Abe. But only just.

"Get some rest. Beth, I'll send Syl down. She was hurt too as I recall."

He slipped out of the room and hoped that the light he had seen at the end of the tunnel was daylight ...

... and not a train comin.

That easily. Mike could be on Galiano and gone away from all the trouble Glory had given him. It was hard to understand how he'd lasted this long in lieu of the the long list of rogue events he'd experienced.

Ian gave more explanation, and Mike heard him. He couldn't rationally process the point the captain was making though, or give him the satisfaction of acknowledgment.

"Yeah..." managed Mike. Fact was he couldn't see himself getting up from that position for some time. He needed to be away from consciousness for a few hours, and his blood had a lot of catching up to do.

Becker reached into his ear and clawed out the comm unit that Glory personnel had. With a careless flick of his hand it rolled onto the floor next to him. He was done. And glad.

MED BAY

Bosch-Ryobi seemed mellow now, but yet taking it all in.

Then a thought occured to her.

"You know, that bitch Renwick must have known this could have been a one way trip. And not successful. If it didn't go her way I imagine she might have left a back up plan."

"We still attached to that firefly?"

BRIDGE

Siobhan found most of the warnings on Glory were just that, warnings. The ship was flyable, despite needing repairs in the immediate future.

There was something else though when she linked up to Galiano for some diagnostics, those of Glory seemed to be classified and hard to access. There were the links to the Firefly, the usual handshaking from ship to ship, all of which had been denited by Glory's systems. But there was something there Ian Dugan's systems had picked up.

A countdown of some kind on the Firefly. The time of the countdown couldn't be determined, but there it was: counting down, waiting for a command code to stop it.

Beth noticed Abe's smile at her quip an smiled back, pleased that it was appreciated though she would have been surprised at Abe's assessment. She didn't think of herself as having fire. She thought of herself as meek and mild and well, mousey. If she were to look back on her career as a trauma surgeon, particularly through the eyes of the nurses and anaesthetists who had supported her in the operating room, she would have been surprised that while they found her easy and pleasant to work with without the ego issues and shouting that went on with other surgeons, that they knew there was a line that they couldn't cross.

Abe said: "...I just wish he'd take my advice from time ta time..."

"That is men for you," Beth said quietly, suggesting a somewhat cynical attitude toward the half of the species blighted by a Y chromosome. "Especially when the advice comes from a woman," she continued. It hadn't been a conscious decision to say any of it out loud but listening to herself speak she realised that the attitude she was expressing was a consequence of the wider attitude she held toward men. It helped her rationalise her feelings toward April and, with the reinforcement of Abe expressing to her that she was happy for her but most importantly that she seemed to think that Sylandra loved her.

"And I love her," she admitted to herself for the first time.

"If you can manage it," Beth responded to Abe's request to go faster though she was not happy to get closer to a verbal conflict. She was never comfortable around conflict and, having had experience, now, of combat, she was't sure which she found more uncomfortable. However she did acknowledge that trying to calm things down was a good idea, especially as one of the was her patient and shouldn't be exerting himself.

"Bother," Beth muttered when Ian left without helping Abe. She could have done with the extra hands, especially with Sylandra expected to arrive soon, assuming, of course, that Sylandra allowed herself to be dismissed. Fortunately she still had Ayden who was still busy with the preparation of Bosch's hand.

"I'll get you settled," she said to Abe, steering her to the closest unoccupied cabin and helping her to lie down. She really didn't care that it belonged to a member of the crew; at the moment getting Abe lying down and the vacuum set up was more important than the niceties of who might be inconvenienced.

"I will send Ayden to check on you in a bit, Abe. Let me know over comm if you are feeling distressed at all," she said, laying her hand briefly on Abe's forehead to check her temperature before departing at speed to the medbay.

"I can take over now, Ayden. Thank you," she said, the expression of gratitude genuine. "I believe Sylandra is on her way down with an injury .... " Beth stopped for a moment as her heart did another gyration at the thought before continuing. "Ayden will need to be checked on in a few minutes."

"Sir, we have a problem," Siobhán said over comm. "There is a timer running on the Firefly. Don't know how long its got or what it will do but it is not likely to be nice." It had been the ship the hostiles had arrived on, after all.

"We should disconnect with dispatch but first I need to see if there is a booby trap rigged to disengagement. Do you have anyone with bomb disposal experience? Otherwise I will go down there and do a physical check myself. As a precaution we might want to get the airlock doors closed and the compartments around it sealed."

While she waited for a response, Siobhán checked to see if there was an programmatic trigger that would be fired if they attempted to disengage. The myriad ways in which an explosive device could be triggered always made such situations "interesting".

Sylandra watched as Siobhán went through the various diagnostics, checking the systems for error detection and steps to repair. She gasped when the countdown showed on the screen and as the other woman started alerting Ian, she grabbed her shoulder back and slipped out of her chair.

"I'm the demo person. Tell Ian I'm on my way."

She was out of the bridge within moments, and as she passed into the cargo bay, glanced at the prisoner still unconscious at the foot of the stairwell. The hole in the cargo hatch still gaped open, and the faint glow from the Firefly's interior lights shown through it, inviting her to investigate.

She pulled a small device out of her bag of tricks, adjusted the settings and stepped to the edge of the hole. Running the scanner along the edge, she watched the needle to see if there were any electronical currents nearby. A small blip near the left edge got her attention. She leaned in and studied the object sitting just inside the Firefly's hatchway, its dim light flickering. Looking further in, and around the the perimeter of the hole, she could see the string of rectangular blocks all wired together into a huge loop surrounding the outside of the Glory's cargo hatch.

"Ai ya sorry go tsao de wired us but good. We're totally hosed if I can't disarm this."

AYDEN

Ayden kept busy cleaning Bosch's wounds while the drama went on around her. It was a mess, both the hand and the crew interactions when it came to what happened between the woman before her with a nearly fingerless hand, the one that did the cutting and Captain Dugan. She was about to give them a clear headed opinion of it all before kicking everyone out, but things moved on all by itself.

Then she faltered when her patient suggested that the other ship may have been booby trapped. The Firefly? Wasn't Rex in there salvaging stuff? She craned her neck, trying to catch a glimpse of him but couldn't. She returned to Ryobi's wounds instead, her head slightly less focused.

Luckily, Beth came back in to help neutralize some of the tension. Ayden kept working on Ryobi's hand as Beth moved the girl who tried to intervene with Captain Dugan to another room. She was back relatively quickly.

"I can take over now, Ayden. Thank you,"

Ayden nodded and stepped back to check on Mike again. The bandage had a spot of blood on it, but he had moved during his argument with the Captain.

"You need to stay still and rest. No arguments, dong ma?" she said as sweetly, but firmly as possible.

"Abe will need to be checked on in a few minutes."

Ayden looked up at Beth.

"That's the woman that was just here? The pneumothorax?" Where is she?"

ABE

Things had hit critical between Mike and Ian. It was bad too. They were all but cutting ties right now. This was bad. Abe knew how much Ian depended on and trusted Mike. They had been crewmates for a long time.

She also knew that her intervention hadn't worked. Not one iota. It didn't even register on Ian's radar, which just went to show how bad things were. She was looking at Ian with concern when he half addressed her.

"Get some rest. Beth, I'll send Syl down. She was hurt too as I recall."

Sylandra was injured too? She looked sharply at Beth and wondered if she knew. If it were Ian injured, she would be climbing the walls. When Ian seemed to leave, she reached out for Beth again. Her energy was waning and without help, she was going to drop where she stood.

That's when Bosch finally spoke and Abe caught the full sight of what had been done to her. Abe's eyes widened with shock. Then her eyes widened even more at the suggestion that the Firefly could have some very unpleasant surprises for them still.

She touched her comm.

"Ian..." she rasped a little. "Bosch thinks that Renwick may have left a surprise for us on the firefly."

That's all she had a breath for. She hoped he understood what she was trying to say.

Abe looked back at Beth.

"I think I need to rest."

She was ready keel over any second and she didn't know exactly where she needed to be. Luckily Beth was there for her.

"I'll get you settled,"

She leaned heavily on Beth with each step. They were moving back towards the cabins and stopped at Cabin 4. She wasn't quite sure whose it was at t he time, but she was thankful for the empty bed. Beth helped her down and then hooked the machine up to her.

"I will send Ayden to check on you in a bit, Abe. Let me know over comm if you are feeling distressed at all,"

Beth laid her hand over her forehead to check her temperature and swiftly exited to help the others.

Then she heard another member of Galiano's crew speak.

"Sir, we have a problem," "There is a timer running on the Firefly. Don't know how long its got or what it will do but it is not likely to be nice."

Could this get any worse?

"We should disconnect with dispatch but first I need to see if there is a booby trap rigged to disengagement. Do you have anyone with bomb disposal experience? Otherwise I will go down there and do a physical check myself. As a precaution we might want to get the airlock doors closed and the compartments around it sealed."

Abe tried to get up, but her energy was less than optimal. She laid back down feeling defeated.

"I'm the demo person. Tell Ian I'm on my way."

Sylandra. But wasn't she injured? After a few minutes that seemed to last forever, she heard the prognosis.

"Ai ya sorry go tsao de wired us but good. We're totally hosed if I can't disarm this."

Abe quickly commed Beth.

"How long will this take?" Abe asked. "I need to be up as soon as I can. He needs me."

She could tell by his bleakness that he might need a bit of support.

Things were bad on the ship, now, but Ian hoped that time heals all wounds. Eventually. That was why he suggested that Mike stay over before going to the Galiano. Afterall, they had a Med Bay too.

He had gone half way to the Bridge when he turned and walked back to the stairs to check on their guest. He made sure the bindings were tight and tightened them some more. Enough to hurt but not enough to cut off all circulation.

Dimly, he was aware of the goings on around him and caught the tail end of Abe's statement.

...Renwick may have left a surprise for us on the firefly."

"What..?"

That cant be good.

Then he saw that Sly over by the hatch that needed fixing, checking the interior of the area with a scanner.

"What...?"

There cant be anything over there. I would have seen it...

Ai ya sorry go tsao de wired us but good. We're totally hosed if I can't disarm this."

"What...?"

That's not possible...."

Several expressions crossed his scared face and then they all cleared up as he pointed a finger in the air in a Eureka moment.

"Unless..."

He paused of just a moment.

"Oh Rutt Me a new one."

He looked at their guest.

"I was so busy putting in my own explosives I never thought to look for yours. Quite ingenious on your part. Except for one thing. Your still here...

He left the man where he was and moved across the Cargo Bay to Syl's side.

"What we got, Syl. I was Demolition back during the war. I can help. Ours are wired remotely and are on the sides of the access, blowing out. Let me guess ... these are the side wall of the Glory, facing into this ship.

He listened to her reply before asking his own question.

"How's the wound?"

He looked hard at her while she answered.

"Like I said, I can help. Tell me what you need me to do"

Sylandra looked up as Ian appeared over her shoulder. She pointed to the timer, flickering its lights.

"Blocks of C4 looks like, circled the hatch to blow in. Timer looks digital. Thought about freezin' it. Or sprayin' foam into it. Don't know the time we got. Siobhán spotted it on the ship's interconnect. Maybe best we move everyone else to Galiano and disconnect for safety? Leave just us to try to disarm..."

Just one more loss; another job gone sideways. Maybe I'm not destine for a life of pleasure.

Thoughts of Beth... Jason... Cypher. So many others. Lovers, friends, people who she cared about.

She glanced over at the bandage wrapped around her forearm.

"Not a problem. Sore rib but not keepin' me out of action."

The Booby Trap at the cargo door.

It wasn't sophisticated. Even after checking to make sure that wasn't a trick in itself, it would be easy to disarm. The problem though, was that the timer wasn't really linked to this set of explosives. Somewhere in the Firefly was another bomb. Disengagement would doable, but finding where in the Firefly were more explosives, that could be problematic.

Rex approached from the depths of the firefly carrying a huge machine gun and a case of top grade energy bars. He looked over that which had Ian and Syl's attention. He raised an eyebrow and gave a quick study of their faces. Without any sign of alarm he headed on into Glory.

Bridge

Sonya Gulliver took to prepare to fly Glory if Sylandra did not return. There had been no conversation, the woman had simple trusted her. She liked that. Unspoken respect.

Talk of booby traps. Dugan could deal with it. Michael turned this head to the side and left things to unfold.
Ayden

"You need to stay still and rest. No arguments, dong ma?"
He felt her fingers at his side, inspecting the wound. With how he felt physically, there was much of an argument to put up. "How long?" That was pretty broad on it's own and he realised a few beats later. "When will I be good?" ETAs were nice to have. An idea of how much longer he'd have to endure Glory would help him settle his mind.

Ayden had to attend to someone else, but Becker still had something to ask. He grabbed Ayden's hand to stop her escaping the question. "Galiano was it? Will the captain take a passenger?" A matter of detail, but Mike was looking for certainty.

"Sometimes it would be nice to be wrong," Siobhán commented when Sylandra relayed the news back that there was indeed a bomb though her smile never left her face. There seemed to be no power in the 'Verse that could do that.

"At least we seem to have one person who knows what to with things that go bang," she added. Her main focus, though, was on ensuring that there was nothing that might react to any attempt to disarm the bomb. She wasn't concerned with conventional electric or mechanical triggers, she trusted Sylandra to take care of those. It was the subtle, coded heartbeat-type triggers that Siobhán was looking for, the sort that would respond to any attempt to jam a detonation signal.

Ayden said: "That's the woman that was just here? The pneumothorax? Where is she?"

"Yes," Beth replied simply, seemly distracted by something, and then belatedly pointed across and down the passage. "She is in cabin four. I've put her on vacuum."

The cause of her distraction was Sylandra, or rather, her non-appearance. "She should be here by now; is there another hostile?" The thought that real harm might have come to Sylandra was enough to freeze her blood. "Should I go looking?" Beth asked herself, her duty to her patients warring with what she recognised was a selfish need to assure herself that Sylandra was okay.

Sylandra said over comm,"Ai ya sorry go tsao de wired us but good. We're totally hosed if I can't disarm this."

Beth's heart skipped a couple of beats, relief that Sylandra was okay quickly followed by the realisation of what she was telling them in her transmission. She had hoped it was over but now there was this new threat.

Abe said over comm, "How long will this take? I need to be up as soon as I can. He needs me."

Beth's thoughts were jerked back by Abe's question. It wasn't something she wanted to respond to over comm and she didn't think it fair to send Ayden with the bad news. There was also the question of how much Ayden knew about the medium to longer term treatment of a tension pneumothorax; she didn't want to insult her but she didn't want to leave her floundering either. For a few moments it left Beth in a quandary, not knowing what to decide.

A quirk of fate, if it could be called such, resolved, or at least deferred, the issue. Beth's gaze drifted downward, her eyes receiving but her brain only sluggishly processing the signals. It was only when her fingers slipped and a small spurt of blood from Bosch's hand caught her attention that her brain caught up. With Mike she had been prepared and had managed to control, albeit with some effort, that blood now induced in her. With Bosch, she was caught by surprise. Without warning, and for the second time that day, Beth's eyes rolled back and she slumped to the deck.

AYDEN

When Ayden heard about the booby traps, she closed her eyes in dread. She looked out of the med bay towards the cargo bay, looking for Rex. He would know what to do. Maybe they should think about evacuating everyone to the Galiano until any kind of threat was neutralized. But she was distracted by Becker's comment.

"How long?" "When will I be good?"

She looked over at him. She was not happy that he was chomping at the bit to leave. People in that much of a hurry tend to force themselves along the healing process much too fast, which will only set them backwards.

"It will take as long as it takes," she told him. "It all depends on how much you allow yourself to heal. Rush it and it will take longer."

"Galiano was it? Will the captain take a passenger?"

Ayden shrugged.

"That you would have to discuss with my Captain. I'm not sure where he is right now, but you aren't exactly in any condition to be up and around."

She heard the comm from the pneumothorax woman. She couldn't believe she was chomping at the bit to get up and move around. She also couldn't believe what was about to happen. She caught the movement of a wound spurting and was about to help out when Beth keeled straight over.

"Beth!"

She ran to her side and made sure she was still breathing, then looked up at Becker.

"She have any medical problems?" she asked as she made sure that there were no injuries. Maybe a slow acting one from the attack? She didn't know if Beth had come into any contact with the assassins. Then she looked up to see that Bosch had developed a bleeder. Bleeding outranked unconscious at this moment. So she stood up and covered it with a cloth to put pressure on it. It she was lucky, the wound would just need stitching up. Anything vascular was beyond her scope of knowledge.

"A little help here? If anyone is free from dealing with the booby traps, I could use the help. Beth is down. Passed out. Unknown reason," she reported. Then she heard Abe saying what she had planned to do at the moment. "Don't know what your name is right now, but I can't deal with another critical injury right now. Stay put or I will have someone come and make you stay put."

She looked out to the cargo bay.

"Rex? Help me!"

He might not know anything about medical work, but he sure as Hell could make a slightly diminutive woman stay in bed.

ABE

Abe was confused by the lack of an answer on Beth's part. But she heard the sounds of commotion.

"What's going on?"

No one answered, but she heard a ruckus of some sorts going on. She gripped her gun. What if they were experiencing a new wave of attackers? First they had booby traps and now she didn't know what else was going on.

"I'm coming. Just let me figure out how to get up."

She heard Ayden's order to stay still, but if they had attackers, she needed to help. She needed to get up. She just had to figure out how.
