Glory Betrayed

Glory sat on the drift between the Core and Blue Sun Systems. From a distance one would not find her, quiet and in low profile. Just as she should be.

As Blaze approached a comm signal was sent.
Nothing came back from Glory.

As Blaze came nearer, still nothing.

Glory drifted, by all appearance, dead in the black. Power was limited to life support.

There was no reply on comms.
Ian Dugan's carefully crafted security safeguards produced no response.
Through the front a light from a flashlight could be briefly seen on the bridge, then nothing.

Sylandra sat at the bridge controls on Blaze as they arrived at Glory. Problems abound. No response from the ship, and only a brief glimpse of a light on the bridge. Syl manovered the shuttle to point nose to nose with Glory, and turned on the forward landing lights, blazing white beams into the bridge of the ship.

"Someone there, one o' ours or ... ?"

Michael shook his head. "Why wouldn't we get comms?" His face screwed up as he gazed through the viewscreen. It made little sense, and he wanted to believe it was a technical error but that didn't suit recent events. Mike was growing less and less accepting of coincidences. An unaccounted for signal had departed Glory not long ago, and little explanation had come. There had been talk of treachery, and Mike had had his suspicions.

"Come on, just connect us." Mike was impatient, especially when he was concerned for crew. "We've got people in there." Bad feeling didn't begin to describe what Mike felt.

Ian accessed the situation

Dom, Reese, Bosch ... Bosch by her self would be trouble for anyone. Daltray was there too. Things that make ya go 'Hmmmmm', he thought

"Dock us up top. We'll go in hot. Abe, you with us?"

He had not seen the blood at first, but it was several hours travel time and Clare was with them. Good to have the ship's doc along.

The forward docking port was just a few meters above them. It would be quickest.

Sylandra flipped off the landing lights, and rotated the shuttle, as she maneuvered it over the top of the Glory. Aligning the airlocks via the external camera, she nursed the two ships together until there was a gentle bump and the sound of metallic grappling. She secured the locks and checked the atmospheric seal before turning back.

"We're home. Let's see what's become of it."

She left the pilot's seat in a quick, twisting motion, snatching up her pack on the way out, following Ian and Mike toward the hatch.

Abe was quite aware of the instant that Ian figured out she was bleeding. It was like he could smell it.

"Ain't nothing ta worry 'bout," she growled as she glared at him. "There's nothin' ta see here. Just a scratch."

He seemed to take her explanation and she was good with that. If there was any change to the wound she would do the responsible thing and have it handled, but it just wasn't worth it at this point. It would close on it's own. She would have Beth look at it after to make sure that infection wasn't an issue, but she was right as rain. Well maybe not right as rain, but she wouldn't die any time soon.

A while later, there were other things to notice. Something was going on inside Glory. Something that wasn't right. Abe stood up near Ian and scrutinized the light they were seeing from the cockpit. It was odd. Abe didn't like odd. If it was one of their own and they were having mechanical issues, wouldn't they use this time to signal somehow?

And if it was an unfriendly type, what exactly did they do to incapacitate Bosch and the others. Then there was the issue that Daltry had been left on board and he had already come under suspicion. And the signal that went out? Was that the way they were found?

Too many questions and not enough answers.

"Dock us up top. We'll go in hot. Abe, you with us?"

That little grin that took over Abe's expression when they were about to go into battle made it's way onto her face. She didn't know what it was about battle, but she sure did like the way it made her feel all good and eager inside.

"Have ya ever known me not ta be?" she asked looking up at him. "And for once, will ya let me go in first?"

As Blaze moved into position the open door to the second shuttle bay is noticed. The second shuttle is gone.

As the crew enters Glory, it is ominously quiet. The usual quiet hum of the engines running in standby is not there. Only the occasional pump of the air vents to maintain life support.

Ian attempts to use one of several control panels to gain access to ships systems. Oddly there is no power, not even when he uses certain back up codes and hidden switches.
It occurs to him that this is not a hack, but a hardware attack. Something only accomplished from inside the ship.

Dom, Ian is certain he does not have the capability.
Reese, yes; that's for certain. She would know where to cut and how to totally disable Glory.
Daltry. Doubtful, unless he was quite good at fooling them entirely in their interrogations of him. Very very good.
Bosch. Impossible to know. The cyborg woman was always an enigma.

Then from some sort of loud speaker located below deck came the voice of Bosch.
"Attention. Whoever is on my ship, you had best leave.
Or i'll gut you like a trout; which if you are not a fisher a trout is is a fish;
which you gut.
Before eating.
Which I'll do after I fry you in hot oil."

Mike took up a position by the hatch, his gun drawn ready though with no idea of who he might end up pointing it at. It was weird entering his home in such a clueless fashion. Questions were growing by the second.

-"And for once, will ya let me go in first?"

"'Fraid I'm calling shotgun on this," he informed Abe. He was itching to get aboard and check on the crew. If they were still there of course. Why was there a shuttle missing. He began the opening of the hatch.

-"Attention. Whoever is on my ship, you had best leave.
Or i'll gut you like a trout; which if you are not a fisher a trout is is a fish;
which you gut.
Before eating.
Which I'll do after I fry you in hot oil."

"Then again, if you want to go first." If Bosch was wrong they had a hell of a problem on their hands. He looked to Dugan. "She's got two minds. And one of those minds didn't sound like it would play well. If she's flipped, she's looking to kill. Not looking to reason." Mike recalled bearing witness to some of Bosch's past actions. He hadn't found the time to share the story. "I'm speaking from experience."

Sylandra pulled "Bruce" from her pack and slung the bag over her shoulder and settled it against the small of her back. She pulled a fresh clip from the bag and ejected the nearly spent one before slapping home the new one. The banana clip held 30 fresh rounds and she jacked one into the chamber. Bringing the heavy pistol/assault gun up to port, she nodded to Mike.

"I'm ready. I'll cover your back and if you go down first, I'll spray anyone in front."

A sly grin broke out, and she hoped Mike understood the joke behind her comment.

Beth's main focus, once she had boarded Blaze was to find a spot where she wouldn't be in any one's way and then to strap herself in. She knew she was still in shock and while her condition was improving, she still wasn't fully aware of what was going on around her. If she had, she would have had Abe's wound dealt with before they were anywhere near Glory.

"Oh no," she thought as the truth that their home coming wasn't going to be smooth sunk in. She hadn't even considered the possibility that something might go wrong on Glory while they were away and she had so been looking forward to spending some quality time alone with Sylandra.

Now that seemed as far away as ever.

It took a real effort of will to unstrap herself once the shuttle had docked and pick up her medical bag. Even more so to actually follow behind the rest of the crew in case she was needed in a hurry. Beth wasn't sure what was an appropriate distance; she didn't want to get in the way but she didn't want to get so far behind that she lost contact. She would have asked but everyone else seemed too busy for her to find the courage to interrupt and she wasn't sure she could get more than a pathetic squeak out of her voice box even if she were to try. So she settled on about 4 paces behind the rearmost and did her best to be inconspicuous.

Abe took in a deep breath as Becker weighed in on the idea of her going out first.

"'Fraid I'm calling shotgun on this,"

She raised her eyebrow at him before she clarified her stance.

"Don't care if ya go first out into the ship. I just want ta make sure I go before the Capt'n."

As Becker began to open the hatch, she heard Bosch's announcement.

"Attention. Whoever is on my ship, you had best leave. Or i'll gut you like a trout; which if you are not a fisher a trout is is a fish; which you gut. Before eating. Which I'll do after I fry you in hot oil."

The woman seemed a bit off. Cooking analogies? Strange when confronted with danger. Then Becker spoke again.

"Then again, if you want to go first."

That got both eyebrows raised in shock. Was he backing down that easy? Was he that afraid of Bosch?

"She's got two minds. And one of those minds didn't sound like it would play well. If she's flipped, she's looking to kill. Not looking to reason."

Abe looked at Ian too, trying to see what his reaction would be. One thing she knew was that there was no way he was getting out into the ship ahead of her. No matter what he thought about the whole thing.

"I'm speaking from experience."

"Don't know much 'bout the woman myself, but is it possible, they lost sensors and the like and don't know it is us coming on board? Maybe warning her who it was would help stand her down? After all, it's not like she don't already know we're here."

Sylandra spoke up then.

"I'm ready. I'll cover your back and if you go down first, I'll spray anyone in front."

That had to be a joke, especially based on the expression on Syl's face.

"I'll go first and keep low. That way if'n you feel the need to spray anyone in front, ya won't be hitting me," she said as she stepped up to the open door. "Now, I don't want ya anywhere near the opening, Capt'n, but I do think she'll respond to ya most. If'n you feel talking to her would be best, feel free to give a yell. Otherwise, I'm heading out."

It was up to Ian to decide their next steps.

Ian didn't like.

Not one bit.

His ship is dark and drifting, with no comms.

A shuttle is gone.

AND ABE WOULDN'T LET HIM GO FIRST!!

Nope, he didn't like it one bit.

Then Bosch calls out and calls his home, HER ship ...

Ian looked at his present crew.

"Abe, out and go left, Mike to the right, I'll take center. We clear this landing. Syl, stay by Beth, we may need her expertise sooner than later."

He gave the signal for them to move and moved out with them. Once the landing was clear he leaned over the rail and shouted down.

"Bosch, it's Ian. Get yer scrawny Pi-Gu out here and tell me how you broke my ship!"

"Dugan?" Bosch called out. She sounded unsure.

A floodlight on the lowest deck came on that illuminated the catwalk on the passenger deck at the bottom of the stairs from the upper deck, from which they had descended. The light made it difficult to see below.

"Prove it" She said. "Step into the light."

A movement could be seen on the lower deck due to a reflection or some such. Someone had moved near the crew galley. Given the brief shadow cast one might calculate exactly where they were.

Somewhere on the mid-deck the voice of Jasper Daltry, angry. "Kill that psycho bitch." It sounded like he was in the passenger lounge.

"Steady Ian. Lil Jasper is just mad cause I had to knock him around a bit. He's got a smart mouth on him." She giggled, "... but in a nice way sometimes."

Given how the light was far below, it would be easy, though slow, for someone to move along the catwalk, against the walk, and work their way around the passenger deck. Maybe even get below.

Abe could tell that Ian was not happy. Not one iota. Glory was on the drift. Shuttle was missing and she wasn't responding to any of his rather sophisticated programs.

Plus, the fact that she wouldn't let him go in front was most likely driving him up the wall.

"Abe, out and go left, Mike to the right, I'll take center. We clear this landing. Syl, stay by Beth, we may need her expertise sooner than later."

Abe turned on her heel and looked at him, snorting a little. She asked him to let her go out first, but now he wanted to take center? Should she paint a target on his chest now?

She was about to object when he began to move out and she had no choice but to do as he said.

"I'm lockin' ya in your cabin when this is all resolved until we come ta an agreement, dong ma?" she said into his ear before taking up position.

Abe then winced as Ian leaned over the rail to yell down to Bosch.

"Bosch, it's Ian. Get yer scrawny Pi-Gu out here and tell me how you broke my ship!"

Abe began to search the dark area, looking for danger.

"Dugan?"

Bosch sounded unsure, but inflections and tone can be faked. A light came on below them which only made it harder for them to see.

Abe's spidey sense was going crazy.

"Prove it" "Step into the light."

Abe's hand clamped down on Ian's arm.

"Don't," she growled. "Or I will shoot ya myself."

Her hand went back to her gun as she caught the movement below.

"Someone's movin' 'round down there," she said in a hushed voice. She caught a shadow and zeroed in one whoever it was. "I got 'em in sights."

"Kill that psycho bitch."

Well, Jasper sounded a bit tetchy.

"Steady Ian. Lil Jasper is just mad cause I had to knock him around a bit. He's got a smart mouth on him." "... but in a nice way sometimes."

Abe went and motioned at Mike to show him where the figure she had trained in her sights was.

Then she stepped into the light before Ian could.

"Bosch, it's Abe. Let's keep calm shall we?" she said evenly. "Obviously something has gone amiss here since we left and you know Ian is a prime target for the other side. I'm not going to let him step into the light. If there are unfriendlies on this ship, you know this is a better set up."

She paused.

"Plus you know how I feel about him. I won't let him be wide open to take a bullet," she reasoned. Although she wasn't sure if Bosch was in a reasoning mood at the moment. "Do we have an understanding?"

She hoped that Mike still had the person in his sights. With the light, it was harder than heck to see.

It was times like this that she wished she had night vision goggles. Wouldn't do jack about the glare of the light, but it would help delve into the darkness in other areas.

Mike took Abe's note and clocked the brief movement below deck. He now had rough idea of a figure in the darkness but that wasn't much to go on. Becker tossed around the obvious ideas, other approaches to the bottom deck, but then his mind took notice of Abe stepping forward.

He reached for her, but she was too committed to be pulled back and he winced and the danger she had pushed herself into. Working with that predicament though, Becker had a rough idea of Bosch's position for covering fire if necessary, and he knew what to work towards.

"Beth," he whispered. "Utility closet down the hall, grab some flashlights." Then to Dugan, "I'm gonna try... something?" Mike quickly became aware that had no plan, and now everyone else knew.

Keeping his eye on the area Abe had pointed out, and his gun on standby, Mike began stepping through the darkness along the walkway. He made sure to hold positions where he could back up Abe with fire, but if she played a distraction long enough and he kept quiet enough, maybe he could get close to Bosch.

Beth managed a little smile at Mike, grateful that she had something useful to do. She would be happiest if that was all she needed to contribute and that the situation could be resolved without bloodshed but if their little escapade they had just returned from was an indication of how things usually went then she wasn't terribly hopeful. Not that it was uncommon for her to feel like that; Beth and hope were strangers for the most part.

Taking Mike's whisper as a guide, Beth moved as quietly as she could along the corridor to the utility room, walking on her toes so that her heels didn't sound on the deck plating, having discarded the notion of taking her lightweight boots off knowing that a cry of pain when she stubbed her toes was likely to be more problematic than the falling or staggering through overbalancing.

The utility closet was opened manually but Beth didn't know whether there was also an electrical lock as well and whether it had been engaged or if there was an alarm circuit. She though about going back to warn Mike of the possibility but then decided that it wasn't as if their presence on the ship was a secret and at the end of the day it was just a utility cupboard.

She hoped, despite hope having let her down before.

She started with gentle pressure and gradually increased it, hoping (she could do that, couldn't she? it was only a little thing she was hoping for) that it would't open with a loud noise.

Sylandra reached into her bag and drew out the heavier scope, snapping it into place and then flipping on the light enhancement setting. Raising Bruce to her shoulder, she sighted through the eyepiece and scanned the area beneath them through the dim gray light of the scope. Shadows disappeared and objects became visible.

She knelt at the catwalk and sidestepped to put herself away from Mike and Ian, and concentrated ahead of Abe to aim at any opposition to the other's approach.

She flipped the safety to single shot and held her trigger finger just off the guard.

Becker made good progress down to the passenger deck.

Beth heard what seemed to her a loud and ominous click as the locker opened. Inside were flashlights and numerous other pieces of equipment.

Then the floodlight went out and the eyes of Glory suddenly found themselves at a disadvantage in the sudden darkness. All except Sylandra, her scope adjusted instantly.

At the bottom deck she could see a figure move slow and easy to the center of it. Bosch. Her hands were spread out and held something. Something in each. She tossed them aside and two fairly bright glow sticks lit up. She tossed them to both sides of her.

"Brave girl Abe. Maybe you wouldn't have done that if you knew how I once felt about your Captain."

Bosch looked up.

"Kill the bitch." shouted Jasper.

Bosch looked in his direction, hidden from sight. "Oh, guess that might be needin' some splainin' Ian." She said in a hick voice, then smiled like the tiger that ate the lady.

The sudden plunge into darkness elicited a gasp from Beth and for a moment she was almost overwhelmed by the desire to flee into the cupboard and close the door. It was touch-and-go but by the time she had entered the cupboard and started to draw the door closed she had remembered why she was there and what she had seen immediately prior to the lights going out.

She reached up and searched along the shelf with her hands until she found one of the flashlights and then pulling the door closed as far as she dared, trading off some risk of light seepage against the risk of getting locked in the cupboard, she turned the flashlight on and looked at the available flashlights, selecting the smallest for herself and substituting it for the first, and then gathering the rest she put them in a bag.

Before she left she looked around the cupboard to see whether there was anything else that might be useful, adding it to the bag before switching off her torch and exiting the cupboard. She eased the door closed and then cautiously retraced her steps, using the bulkhead as reference until she reached Mike.

"Mike," Beth whispered. "I have the flashlights and a few other things in this bag."

Ian watched and waited and grew tense. Finally, after the lights went down and Bosch came out, into the open with glow sticks Ian moved.

"Oh fer cryin out loud..."

He moved to the rail and looked down at Bosch. She painted herself as a target and stood at the center. She wouldn't do that if she were going to be the focus ... unless that was what she wanted.

"Bosch, please keep your hands where we can see them and turn around, slowly. Not that I dont trust you, just verifyin."

After a moment he added,

"Are you talking about when we met on the Baronness? I was more than just a target of opportunity?? Really?? And you did ruin my favorite pair of pants."

So many thoughts went through his mind, including that he could die here and now, if someone took a head shot.

That would just ruin his day...
