Coming to the top of the ridge, Sacha pulled the animal to a halt and the trio found themselves looking down on the battle. Night had set in, but the small valley was well lit. To the right was a small transport ship, engines still spinning rather quietly, but on the ground nonetheless. It's cargo bay ramp was down, facing the small homestead that sat to the left of the scene. Both the ship and house were well lit, as was the area around each. Between the two hulking shadows was darkness that rarely exploded with the flash of a gun muzzle. Near the bottom of the cargo ramp, just at the edge of the light, were two large crates - atop them, a gatling gun. A single figure stood behind the crates, though as the gunslingers watched over the field he wasn't fire. The battle seemed to be petering out. The odd gunshots echoed through the small valley. At Biff's remark the young girl gave him a brave, yet soulless, smile. Then she turned the Kenji. "Only the three that I know of. Though when you only have one person to pull the trigger, he might as well have ten." In answer to her words, a short volley of gunfire echoed through the combat below. Two muzzles blazed in the darkness from the left - clearly, the old man had let Sacha's younger brother join the fray after all - and we returned by uncountable flashes from the opposite side. Now, with the crew of the ship having advanced so far, it seemed the man on the gatling was holding his fire. Around the front 180 degrees of the house there seemed to be barricades setup - old water troughs, crates, bits of sheet metal. Sacha's father had managed to pull together a defense, it seemed. In the stretch between the ship and the house, numerous large masses of black provided cover for the intruders. Upon squinting carefully at them, one would discover they were large, SUV sized hay bales. Perfect cover for a slow, deadly advance. ![]() |

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes,"
Kenji nodded as his employer spoke hopelessly, he watched the occasional flashes of gunfire illuminate the rather small battlefield. "I can understand that sentiment. I've been in similar scrapes before. The merc muttered loud enough for Sacha to hear. He was only half-listening at that point. What caught his attention was the gatling gun set up in front of a transport vessel of unknown make. The non-stop rat-tat-tat, constantly popping took him far away. Flashes of a battle long passed, it droned on and on in his head. The faint of gunpowder filled the evening air. His heart started to pound, his pulse quickening "Rock... lots of rock." He imagined the smell of blood and the shouts and screams. Bombs bursting in his mind. He felt like he was someone else. The dog-tags felt heavy around his neck. Haven hung different in the sky, in fact it wasn't gold at all. A dead grey, splotch lay in the air above. Smaller so, smaller than he remembered. No not Haven, Haven was light-years away. He was so far from home. It was Bullet, wasn't it. He was here, on Hera. Wasn't he? He looked around watching the last glimpses of life fade from the eyes of his enemies. Pain wracked Kenji's body as his vision blurred. His eyes slammed shut as he fought to keep himself upright. The mercenary's body jolted as he shook from his reverie. Kenji's opened his eyes and glimpsed around, noting that Biff and Sacha were still there with him at the top of the ridge. "The hell?" he mumbled as he tried to make sense of what happened. It was there... it was right there... He reached up to rub the side of his face. The man's fingers subconsciously tracing his scar. Kenji fought to remember what happened just then, but as soon as it had flooded his mind, the memory had completely ebbed away. He shook whatever unease had taken him and smirked at the irony. "It's a ta ma* shame." the freelancer whispered to himself while he took careful note of the battlefield. His breath steadied as he unholstered Big Iron and gave it a quick look over, checking the charge of it's battery. His jaw set as he realized that he hadn't swapped the battery since Athens. The Gauss function on his pistol was useless. His finger flipped a switch which dropped the magazine into his open palm. A sigh of relief escaped his lips as he saw the counter read optimal. Subconsciously he popped the mag back in and turned to his comrades in arms. "Let's get off this ridge then come up with a plan-of-attack..." His body was running on pure adrenaline at that moment. Biff surveyed the battlefield with an experienced eye. This was going to be alright after all. He had been worried that the odds were going to be too great but everything had fallen into place. A tight battlefield a spread thin enemy who didn't know they were coming and a gatling gun. It was Christmas morning and he was ready to play. Biff thought he saw Kenji confused for a moment but shook it off. Pre fight tension can do that to a man."I couldn't agree more. With how spread they are if we flank the ship we have a chance of cutting them down with their own gatling gun." Biff shrugged nudging his horse to walk again. |

Sacha took in the advice and, dismounting, starting to hastily make her way down the slope. Her heading was directed to the farmhouse, and as the pair behind her started to theorise the best plan of attack, the young woman shook her head. "I'm going straight to pa. He needs my help... and he needs to know we got friendlies on the field. You pair go whichever way you can... whichever you see fit." Leading the horse behind her, she never missed a beat. She was on a mission. As the trio descended the gunfight continued - now, with the gatling silent and the crack of rifles sounding at maybe 10 second intervals, things were slowing down a little. There was no sign that any of the friendlies had taken a bullet, but by the looks of the muzzle flashes from the left hand side of the battlefield, they were running low on ammo. |

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes,""Keep low Sacha, We'll meet up with you soon" Once again Kenji's eyes scanned the battlefield, taking note of the enemies positions. They'd taken up position behind hay bales leaving their entire right flanks open. The darkness hindered his vision beyond the third set of hay bales. "I'm going to make my way along the ridge, try to take out the heavy. If you could make it down the ridge to the farmhouse, you could attempt to flank from the right. Kenji dismounted the horse and patted her head reassuringly. That is unless you have a better plan of attack "Underneath my skin there is a violence, it's got a gun in it's hand" |

"No, sounds good to me. Good hunting." Biff turned his horse off to the left towards the farm house. He gave it a wide berth and made his way into a position on the other side of the battlefield. They had them in a crossfire. Biff scanned the dark masses who moved every now and then thinking themselves safe. Biff got on his stomach and crawled forward. Closing the distance would make his handgun more efficient. He could almost smell their unwashed bodies. Four targets laid out before him. They would be dead soon. |

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes," Kenji watched his partner head down the ridge, "cao jian ren mìng my friend*"checking the risk assessment as he moved further down the hill. It seemed like Biff was making good time down the hill, none of the assailants had seemed to notice him close in on the farmhouse. The injured war vet saw no resistance as he closed in on Sacha and her family. "Underneath my skin there is a violence, it's got a gun in it's hand" "Amateurs...." Kenji muttered as he moved along the ridge line, the occasional shots popped off from beyond the hay stacks. So far everything had gone according to plan, no one was wounded or dead. The Gatling gun remained silent as Kenji moved towards his target... Everything was moving smoothly, either his mark had run out of ammunition, or they had thought it was prudent to conserve ammunition. Either way it was going to prove a Sisyphean effort. Ready to make, ready to make, ready to make sense of anyone, anything Every footfall the mercenary had made was silent, clinging low to the brush growing out of the hill he made his way towards the transport. Worse comes to worst he'd be able to prevent their retreat to the vessel. Best case scenario he'd be able to disable the ship. Allowing himself and Biff to split the credits on the cargo vessel. "Well let's see how it goes." he thought to himself aloud as he began to descend on his foe. "Black holes living in the side of your face, razor wire spinning around your blistering sky" Deftly unholstering Big Iron the mercenary moved down the hill. The popping of arms fire masked his descent. Each foot lightly finding it's place along side the other. Eventually Kenji made his way down the hill headed full tilt towards the distracted Gatling operator, with a shoulder check he removed the gunner from his fortification. "bullets are the beauty of the blistering sky, bullets are the beauty and I don't know why " He struggled with the young male, pound for pound the kid was impressive. Built similar to Kenji the kid let out a flurry of punches, all the while attempting to alert the others on the other side of the barricade. The mercenary was having none of that; and with the final thrust of the assailants fist, Kenji grabbed his wrist and pulled the kid forward. The mercenaries knee met with the bandit's throat, He pulled his hand back and hooked the kid's temple hoping for a quick KO. "Personal responsibility, Personal responsibility" Without a second thought, knocking out his target he brought Big Iron around to bear on the two exposed gunman currently focused on the farmhouse. The sounds of gunfire filled the air as automatic gunfire popped off towards the barn. Kenji unloaded his firearm into the hay bales and the two bandits to the southeast splattering the area with crimson specks. Confine me let me be the lesser of a beautiful man, without the blood on his hands, When Kenji was sure he had their attention he dove towards the Gatling gun. The hand grips felt natural in his hands as the barrels of the stationary gun began to spin. A whine was emitted from the gun as it began to spit out rounds. The mercenary began to pop rounds into the hay bales if only to distract the bandits long enough for Biff to begin dispatching his foes.. Gunfire stormed the valley once more, the silence between shots filled with shouting as the bandits started to realise they had not only been unaware of the new arrivals, but were now being flanked. Kenji managed to take down the gunner near the ships before he could raise an alarm, but the scuffle brought attention nonetheless. His shots were true, though, and soon enough three of the bandits lay dead. By the barricades, Sacha had joined the fight with her father and a young boy, now in sight of Biff, who seemed little more than 14. All three had rifles in hand and started popping off shots over the makeshift barricade as the enemies shifted their positions to avoid the potential gatling fire about to rake their backsides. Biff found himself behind an overturned trough with two men - one maybe 18, the other in his later 30's, each armed with shotguns - running for him from the hay bales they'd formerly been hiding behind. Now, with the chance of shredding gunfire from their rear, charging the barricades made a hell of a lot of sense.

The gattling sang out and Biff waited. Seeing two men run his way he barely broke cover took air with the Five Seven and shot the older assailant twice is quick succession. He winged the young man running for cover. Watching him stagger step two or three more feet Biff popped up out of cover and brought the end of his staff square into his face. As the man fell to the ground Biff scooped up the shotgun he had been carrying. Then he went cover to cover to the next barricade. To help the family take out the remaining men. |

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes," Kenji's pulse quickened as he let loose a few rounds into the hay bales separating him from the barn. if he kept up the act perhaps the assailants would continue attacking the barn, leaving them open for a flanking maneuver. From his count six remained, unknown to him whether or not Biff had taken out any or not. The freelancer left nothing to chance, as he continued to let rounds loose. The pop pop pop echoing a mantra in his head. "Sweep right" his instincts begged as he slowly tore into the three hay bales before him. He bit his lip as he swung the weapon towards the north side of the ranch grazing the shoulder of one of the bandits. "Biff'll clean it up" Kenji thought as he continued to dig deeper into the barricades with round after round. The unending volley echoed across the cannon, each round dug deeper and deeper into the hay bale, filling the area with the scent of singed metal and gunpowder. The freelancers breath hitched as his attention diverted away from the battlefield to the transport vessel. "Cao dan!!!"* he blurted as he examined the viewports, and solid hull behind him. Kenji's thumbs left the triggers as he dropped his right hand to his waist drawing Big Iron once again from it's holster. He'd hope that Biff understood his actions as he moved up the ramp into the transport. Kenji had to be sure he wasn't in for any surprises. Best case scenario he could make his way to the bridge, cut the engines on causing a diversion. Worst case scenario... he'd be dead before he even made it that far. Subterfuge was the freelancer's game, and he wasn't about to let his skills go to waste. From his count the six would be held off long enough by Biff, Sacha, and the others, so he began to get to work. His boots clanked against the grating as he began to make his way to the bridge. The mercenary's body seemed to be running on instinct. The clank of his boots pounded on the flooring as he moved towards the bridge. "Wo ba zhege bushi wang".* Kenji muttered moving amongst the crates and pipes in the cargo bay. Nothing seemed to impede his progress, nor did it seem like anything would: Though on the off-chance something was to occur he was sure to cause as much damage as possible. "So far so good" Kenji thought as he made his way to the bridge. The pilot and copilot seats were empty, so Kenji moved to the control panel. Flipping a few switches and turning a knob, he worked at engaging the engines. *fuck *I hope this isn't in vain. "Underneath my skin there is a violence, it's got a gun in it's hand" |

..... // OUTSIDE With the rattling, ear splitting concussion of the gatling now silenced, the battlefield lay quiet. Biff had successfully downed his two targets and, with the still remaining enemies well distracted by Kenji's flanking, he had no trouble making it up to Sacha and her family. The young girl popped up over the barricade, bolt action in hand, and let loose the final shot of the night. A cry of pain came out of the semi darkness, then silence. Her gun barrel smoked as she surveyed the scene. The old man, through a grizzled white beard and dark eyes, like those of his daughter, watched the gunslingers arrival with honest confusion. Once Biff didn't raise his weapon, though, Sacha's elderly father relaxed and let his own rifle slip down into the dirt. He sat panting, back to the barricade, and his younger child, a teenage boy, came scuttling over to join them. There was blood on the ground, only a small splattering but easily noticeable in the porch light. The old man had taken a hit... at least one... and the pain was only now starting to show on his face. Sacha looked at Biff, her eyes stoic with thanks and desperation, before she noticed that the old man was down. ![]() ..... // THE SHIP Within the vessel, all was quiet. And dark. The internal lights had been shut off some time ago for unknown reasons and the cargo bay, and subsequent rooms, had been lit only by the dull red glow of the auxilary generators. The vessel was almost familiar to Kenji - not specifically, but in general. It was an old Alliance boat, retrofit perhaps, but definitely off the production lines of wartime Osiris. A Mark II Harroner, if he recalled. The vessels had been used back in the dark as patrol, scout and reconnaissance troops transports. The sights he took in, and this prior intelligence, kept Kenji on edge - these kinds of ships had the capacity to easily carry 18 to 20 people. Outside, dying on the homesteads front lawn, were only 9 bandits. If there were more, they weren't showing themselves, but the mercenary continued with caution nonetheless. It only took a few moments at the controls to get the engines going - all these war time ships were standardised and pretty straight forward, in case some grunt had to get her warmed up while his platoon was ambushed. As the engines came to life, no more than a quiet groan from the insulated cockpit of the vessel, the internal lights of the ship came to life. With them came the heavy sound of footfalls from out in the corridor. This ship wasn't empty. Harroner Mk II Schematics Upper Deck + Cockpit Lower Deck |

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes," Kenji's eyes lit up with a certain excitement, feeling the vessel come alive beneath his fingertips. The ship began to stir as the engines started to come on line along with the other systems. Consoles flickered on before his eyes, status reports, system diagnostics. He flitted about the bridge checking each computer for some sort of crew manifest. Before the freelancer could find what he was looking for he heard the sound of boots thudding along the deck plating. He wasn't alone on the ship, nor did he quite expect to be. Kenji's sidearm found it's way back into his hand as his eyes began to scan for any points of possible ingress to the bridge. He wasn't about to take any more chances, especially since he was in the belly of the beast. "Underneath my skin there is a violence, it's got a gun in it's hand" |

All seemed too quiet as the rattle of bullets from the gatling ceased. With the fighting stayed for the moment Biff was about to speak to Sacha when the old man collapsed. Biff rushed to his side checking him over for wounds. He was breathing and it was strong but there was a tiny spatter of blood. Biff searched the old man for wounds. "Darlin' if you have anything to stop the bleeding and clean the wound now's the time to get it!" Biff found a wound and it didn't look too bad. He pulled out a canteen out and poured what water he had left over the wound. Then he took his shemagh from his pocket and folded it into a preasure dressing. The old man groaned at the pressure but that just meant he was still alive. "Sir can you tell me if you feel pain anywhere else?" The wound did not seem lethal but the man was old. |

..... // OUTSIDE Sacha, eyes wide, soon snapped back to reality with Biff's words and ran for the house, discarding her rifle. The younger teenage boy nearby just watched on in shock. The old man grunted as Biff started to tend to his wound - a very clear, clean hole a few inches right of his stomach. The blood was still gushing out with a consistent rhythm and the old soldiers hands were soon red as he fumbled about in the dim light, trying to stem the bleeding. The old man grunted, pursing his lips in pain as if he intended to speak but didn't know where to start. Then the glimmer of slick blood caught Biff's eye, and he leaned backwards a little to get a more focused look. There was a second wound. And a third. The old man had been peppered by fire, some less serious than others. There were some grazes here and there, but at least 3 bloodied patches across his torso, previously covered by his thick duster, that needed attention. One wound, right in the middle of his chest, caught the mercenary's eye in particular. As he examined it, a whimper came from the boy as his father slowly exhaled, starting to lose focus on the pain. This old man was going to die. ..... // THE SHIP The small deck that made up the bridge of the vessel was isolated and, for someone in Kenji's position, easily defended. There were two external airlocks which led to the outside of the ship, and a single ladder that went down to the main deck. It was this ladder which Kenji had climbed up earlier, and this ladder which was the only way anyone was getting to the bridge. Unless the activity below - now muffled voices and the clicking of weapons - involved some kind of explosives, the only limiting factor now was how many bullets the gunslinger had. |

Biff's heart sank. Seeing the sucking chest wound was the nail in the old mans coffin. Young soldiers strong and healthy often don't recover from this. "You go fetch your sister. She should be here." Biff carefully dressed the other wounds as best as he could. The chest wound, though the bandage was slick with blood, was applied. Secured on three sides the fourth left free so that the wound could literally breathe the bandage lifted slight with every breath the old man took. All I can do is make him as comfortable as I can. "Sir, Sacha and her brother will be back here in a second. The farm is safe. You did it." The whine of the ship powering up broke Biff's concentration but he barely showed it. Looking into the old mans eyes while reassuring him of his families safety untill Sacha and the boy returned. I hope that's Kenji. |

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes," "Cao dan" Kenji sidestepped to a panel and let his left hand dance along the screen. He was looking for access to the pressure valves. Harroner II right? He thought to himself, but then again it didn't matter most mid-size transport vessels ran on the same software at least that was as far as the similarities went. If he could just cause an overload in the environmental systems that would result in steam bursting from the vents. He had to try anything that might give him the upper hand in his current predicament. Hopefully the mercenary had enabled the overload as he backed away from the console to take cover. Kenji had slipped the magazine out of Big Iron to check the amount of ammo he had left. The ammo counter on the mag read 4 rounds. The freelancer muttered a curse to himself as he slipped the mag back into his sidearm taking careful aim. At the first sign of hostility he was ready to pull the trigger. ..... // THE SHIP A dull metallic clunking sound echoed throughout the ship as Kenji tried desperately to overload the environmental systems. For such an old vessel, the Harroner II was a surprisingly well designed piece of machinery - it wasn't easily messed with, the on board AI well aware of obvious sabotage or corruption. The lack of such intelligence was what made all those ancient models so much more suited for privateers. The thought made him wonder - just how had this lot ended up with such a high end piece of Fed surplus? His attempts to overload the system ended in vain as two small flashing lights appeared on the console and he lost control - someone, through legitimate means or otherwise, had gained access from another part of the ship. Most likely the Captains cabin, that had access to override most commands. Suddenly, the lights were gone. The groan of the engines died. The shuffling of footsteps and the clunk of leather on metal as someone started up the ladder into the cabin. The corner Kenji had been backed into, now totally dark aside from starlight leaking in through the windscreen, was starting to feel very small. ..... // OUTSIDE The old man gave no response, but his pale eyes lingered on Biff's as the warmth of his body started to surrender to the chill of the evening air. Sacha and the young boy were back to the scene in a minute or so, tears in the young woman's eyes as she comforted her brother. Both were confused and shocked by the sudden extinguishing of the ships engines across the field. A few more moments passed in silence and the eerie, silent passing of the old man lay down softly over the three people present. His chest ceased to rise and quiet sobs came from his daughter as she turned her brother away from the scene. |

Biff put a hand on Sacha's shoulder and squeezed it gently. Saying nothing he backed away to let the family grieve. He picked up his staff and his shotgun. He had two cartridges left and an almost full magazine for the handgun. He ran the length of the field closing in on the ships ramp. There wasn't a hint of limp in his step. He was feeling himself again. The old mans death delayed him backing up Kenji but back up was coming. Better late then never. |

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes," The mercenary took a deep breath as his eyes glanced around the cockpit. "Stranded" He thought to himself realizing he was trapped like a rat in a maze. He focused his breathing as his eyes fell once again to the ladder. The only way out... four rounds, no gauss function. He was truly up shit creek without a paddle,; the glint and gleam of the consoles lead him to wonder what kind of criminal's her was dealing with. He heard the murmur of voices and the clank as someone began to ascend the ladder into the cockpit. If he was to get out of the situation alive, Kenji was to use everything to his advantage. Without giving the situation any thought the freelancer moved towards the entrance of the bridge. His position precariously placed out of view of whomever would decide to wrest control of the vessel away from him. He couldn't shake the feeling though that this ship was too good for the thugs that he had met on the surface. Certainly too good for the folks of Deadwood. That fact continued to eat at him as his body tensed ready for whatever action might be required. "Underneath my skin there is a violence, it's got a gun in it's hand" |

Sail the Sky~With all my fears, and sorrows close. I'm hanging on, just hanging on.~~I wish that you were with me, to sail the sky Serenity.~~Then take me high, or take me low, then to the end where I may go.~~If I can stand then I shall pass. Pass beyond this night of black, pass beyond this night of black.~ | |

Moments later, after the four remaining bullets in Kenji's weapon were confirmed, the barrel of a rifle slowly popped itself up the ladder tube. A middle aged man, with long hair held back with a bandanna and a dirty face, followed close behind. His appearance on the bridge was not dignified, however - if there was a more difficult tactical position to storm than a ladder, these bandits hadn't encountered it before. Precious seconds slipped away as the man, in his hasty attempt to get up and clear of the ladder as quickly as possible, lost his foot and struggled to get himself above the rim of the tube and level his weapon into the darkness. Precious seconds he didn't have. Downstairs Biff managed to arrive at the ships still open cargo ramp as shots echoed out from inside the vessel. Entering to the aft of the upper deck, a mostly barren cargo hold ended in a narrow hallway that led to the central spire room of the ship. In the near-pitch-black of the interior, the gunslinger could see maybe eight figures all skulking around the ladder which led up to the bridge, and down to engineering.
