Biff took the offered glass and took a drink. Swishing the liquid around in his mouth, feeling the familiar burn and covering his entire palette. He let the liquid warm his belly up. He gave a small cough having not had anything stronger then water for a long time and not even having that but spare rations for his captivity. The bourbon tasted fine and a familiar elation crept into his brain.

Kenji

"I'm still stuck here for another few days until the transport vessel arrives, speaking of which I need to check on my mark here in a bit. It's not bad for xiong mao niao"
Biff gave a small nod holding his glass under his nose. "Do you think there will be room on this transport for one more? I have had my fill of this place." He took a smaller sip then before. "I won't get in the way of your business. I just would like a lead off this rock. There's money to be made and it is all elsewhere apparently."

Kenji laid an elbow on the dingy bar, the sleeve of his coat slightly wiping the grime away. "Well like I said, there's that transport comin' in. It doesn't seem like there are many prospective fares here in this dirt town, so I'd say yeah." Kenji swirled the liquid in his glass, his eyes taking note of the people in the bar.

Something bothered him at that moment. Kenji couldn't quite put a finger on it. Perhaps it was the fact that neither the woman from earlier or the ranchers were still in the saloon. His brow furrowed as he took a longer glance around. He pushed it to the back of his mind and took another gulp finishing his beverage.

"You wouldn't happen to know anything about the Grey Reyne would you?" the freelancer pried delicately trying to keep his mind off of whatever was amiss. Then it hit him.

Biff had noted Lear's absence when they walked in. "Lear? I barely know her but what I do know is she gets something in her head she will let little stop her from getting it. Odd she isn't here. Is there another bar?" He took the last of his drink and slid the glass towards the back of bar. He didn't want to lose his head. Things were feeling off. "As for the Grey Reyne haven't heard of it. Spent the last little span of this year reevaluating my own naval to much. Just now got back out into the world."

With his drink done and a wave to say thanks but no more Biff took more of the room in. The men playing cards didn't even look up when Biff turned to look at them. A glint of metal flashed for a second in Biff's eyes and he brought his hand to touch the staff, but it was a pocket watch. Biff gave a nod to Kenji in the direction of the card players. "That guy seems nervous, my warm and fuzzy is fading."

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes,"

Kenji recounted what he had seen in the small town if you could even call it that. There were a few bars in town but none of them were closer to the landing pad. The fact that she wasn't here didn't sit right with him. She seemed the type who would avoid socializing, so why not head to a vacant bar. Kenji shook the worry from his mind and took another sip of his bourbon. It didn't help matters much that Biff hadn't heard of the Grey Reyne. "I see, well that's not a problem. Just figured you might've heard something is all, as for... Lear was it...? She probably headed to another dive."

Biff

"That guy seems nervous, my warm and fuzzy is fading."
"Well then we ought to see to that, though there's enough to be said I did kinda cause a ruckus earlier." Kenji took a good look at Biff trying to gain a measure of the man. He didn't look armed, nor did he look like he was able to hold his own in a brawl yet. He still looked weary and injured. He cleared his throat before finishing his drink. "Are you good? He asked just loud enough for Biff to hear. "I mean to ask if you're able to hold your own, In case things go south. Shots going off an' all"

Biff gave a grin. He knew what he must look like. "Yes. My gear was taken but if gunplay comes about there's enough cover and concealment for me to close the distance with anyone." Bounties, bar brawls, and good booze choices. Kenji was rising to a place of respect in Biff's mind. "Ruckus huh? I've caused my fair share in places like this myself"

Biff

"Yes. My gear was taken but if gunplay comes about there's enough cover and concealment for me to close the distance with anyone."
The freelancer frowned for a moment. No one bounty hunter should be unarmed, that in itself is asking for trouble. Kenji mused, his mind filling with the thought of rival mercs and other less than reputable bounty hunters. "Not doubting your prowess at C.Q.C, but that's not a wise plan of attack, seein' that you might come across someone you have inadvertently crossed." He didn't quite enjoy entertain the idea of someone not having the chance to defend themselves proper. Sure Biff seemed like he was recuperating at a decent rate, Kenji still had his doubts. He was going to rectify that.

He grabbed the bottle of bourbon and corked it before rising off the stool to his feet. "I can give you a piece now and you can pay it back with a future favor...." Kenji bade Biff to follow as he made his way to the stairs. "Or you can take your chances unarmed potentially facing off against the local color. They may be bumpkins, but get enough of them together, there won't be any power in the 'Verse to stop them."

As the pair got caught up in their conspiracy, the door to the small dive crashed open and killed the relaxed, silent vibe of the lazy afternoon. A young woman stood there, silhouetted by the afternoon sunlight that shone in behind her. Her dark hair was short, cut raggedly at shoulder length and pulled back to a short tail, and her fact was smudged with dirt in an endearing way. Her eyes, dark, like coffee, were serious and had an urgency to them, though her expression didn't remove her all together attractiveness.

She was dressed plainly - old cargo pants, boots, a light singlet top. A rancher, by the looks of her.

"I need guns! Right now, damn it!" The demand caught everyone off guard - immediately the bar tender hitched up an eyebrow, while the two card players found themselves looking away from the woman, trying to draw attention to the only other two occupants of the place.

"I don't need stares, damn it. It's an emergency!" The old bar tender still remained silent and the young lady, with an impatient roll of her eyes, turned her gaze directly to Biff and Kenji. "You two! Can you shoot?! It's not rocket science!"

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes,"

Kenji's eyes caught quick movement as the door to the saloon slammed open, a figure stood agitated in the doorway. The merc's hand dropped the bottle of bourbon, his hand reflexively fell to his holster. His thumb on Big Iron's hammer his fingers wrapping around the grip much like a glove. The bottle fell to the floor with a clatter, but the freelancer paid no heed to the sound. His attention was focused on the person in the doorway.

Strange figure

"I need guns! Right now, damn it!"
Kenji took her in for a moment sizing her up. She seemed to be a rancher at the very least. The dirt laid upon her skin like a foundation, the telltale sheen of sweat covered her skin, a bit more than someone just coming in from outside. It wasn't perspiration from fatigue, instead it was from the adrenaline. She was in trouble, no doubt about that.

Kenji released his grip from his sidearm and reached for the holster that slipped along his back. He unsnapped the button and produced a FN-338 much like an old FN Five-Seven used back on Earth-That-Was, promptly handing the weapon over to his new comrade. "Well looks like you get to see some of that action you were wanting earlier haha" He joked off-handedly digging in the back pocket of his cargo pants before handing over a magazine. "I was going to hand something a bit flashier over when we got upstairs, but as they say, "Duty Calls".

Kenji didn't let the unease show as he handed over the spare sidearm. He was going to have to keep an eye out for Biff, making sure he was squared away. Biff looked like he was doing well enough but the alcohol might have hindered his recuperation. Though at least it will be working as a mild anesthetic. Kenji fired a confident grin smile at Biff as he turned to face the woman in the doorway.

Stranger

"I don't need stares, damn it. It's an emergency!"----"You two! Can you shoot?! It's not rocket science!"

"Not quite rocket science, more like ballistics" He quipped moving towards her leaving Biff to follow up. "Name's Kenji, and the tone of your voice says that there's a job that needs done." The freelancer's voice became much more brisk and business-like. Now you can fill us in on the way if it's urgent enough or you can stand here and fill us in. His verdant gaze pierced through her own pools of melted chocolate.

Biff was about to answer Kenji on his offer of weapon when the tavern door burst open and Biff was up twirling the staff into the ready position along the back of his arm. It had been years since he fought with anything blunt but that didn't mean he didn't remember how. The poor woman was in quite a state and her desperation was not at all hidden. Kenji handed a fire arm back to him. Biff grabbed the weapon looking it over quickly clearing it. He caught the ejected round and with a purpose cradled it back into the magazine. Taking the magazine and sliding back into the weapon he racked a round into the chamber and filled his once empty holster as Kenji handed him the extra magazine.

"Darlin' we may not look like much but we're able." Biff was speaking for himself of course he knew the state he was in and how he must look and hoped Kenji took his meaning.

The young lady watched desperately as Kenji rose from the bar and introduced himself. She remained tense, blatantly distrusting and on edge, but her eyes were those of someone who had nothing more to lose. As the pair headed for the door, her dark eyes looked them up and down. There was a glint of defeat in them, a look that said 'well, that's that then, ain't getting no help here.'
Biff

"Darlin' we may not look like much but we're able."
She started, only slightly, at those words. Then a blush came ot her cheeks. She clearly hadn't meant to offend, her analysing glance having been more critical than she'd intended. After a short pause, she gave a nod in response. It was the quickest hiring either of the men had ever been through.

"Can ya'll ride?" She'd already started back out into the street, the afternoon sun almost hidden behind the buildings that lined the main thoroughfare of Simmons Hollow. It was getting late.

She paid no heed to the useless bartender and the two card players as she left.

To compliment her words, the whiny of a horse echoed down the empty street. Outside, not even hitched, were three large beasts, saddled and ready to go. They looked as if they'd already been riding hard.

Kenji flashed a confident grin looking from Biff to the woman and back again. "The lady doth blush... See what you did. He teased his comrade. His smile faltered a little as his demeanor became more business like. The ice was broken and there was work needed doing. Kenji knew that much but as for the details well they didn't quite matter. A job was a job.

He watched the woman leave the bar and bade Biff to follow. His mind already at ease watching Biff wield that staff. Well it seems he's doing loads better, when I get to Athens I should really send a message to New Louisville, they certainly make for a wonder tonic. He crossed the threshold of the bar into the outdoors. The smell of dust and dirt filled his nostrils with a faint sense of home. It had a slight feeling of home, his head throbbed slightly and he missed a step before quickly getting his foot back under him.

Woman

"Can ya'll ride?'

He left that one to Biff, as Kenji was focused in trying to clear his head. Couldn't be I had too much to drink, He reasoned shaking it off. Kenji flexed his fingers and cracked his neck before following the pair further down the road. His mind hurt but it wasn't a normal side effect of alcohol. The freelancer worked through it, buried in thought as they moved on up to a trio of horses, ride ready but obviously hard ridden.

"I'll wager I can ride better now then I currently glide on my feet. Let's do this." Biff walked up to one of the horses the stranger brought. He patted him looked him in the eye trying to make the fastest bond possible. Though ridden near to exhaustion these were beautiful animals and Biff's soul reached out to touch theirs. Though he failed once the second attempt for the saddle worked and he placed his staff into an empty shotgun holster attached to the saddle. "Yes this will work out just fine."The beast though haggered seemed to adapt well enough to this stranger daring to ride it. Fine animals indeed.

The young lady raised an eyebrow at the remark and then turned away, half shy and half agitated. She led the pair a short way from the bar to where the three horses waited eagerly yet exhausted.

The young woman gave him a nod as she hitched up onto the largest of the three beasts. The horse Biff had approached, surprisingly, rubbed a friendly face to the strangers hand, eager for the attention.

"M'names Sacha. I'd have got more of ya'll, but only had the two spare mounts. My pa..." She halted, ensuring that the two companions were saddled and ready to go, before kicking her mount into action and flying off down the street. She continued, in a shout over her shoulder, assuming the others were following, "... my pa's a rancher out here, not far from town. He's... we've got some local colour! These low life cheong bao ho tze sons of bitches thought they'd show up, try to take the herd. We need to get back out there ma shong, dohn luh mah?!" Her voice caught on the wind as the trio broke out of town and she turned her mount off the road, heading overland towards the hilly horizon.

The sun was setting behind the group - light would be gone within the hour.

Biff spurred his horse after the woman named Sacha as she yelled a brief overveiw of the situation. Biff lived for moments like these, a good mount beneath him, and the wind on his face. The possibility of pay was a bonus and the thought of actually helping some good folks in need was the cherry on top. He couldn't help but smile a bit at the thought.
Sacha

"We need to get back out there ma shong, dohn luh mah?!"
"Oh if we were anymore clear we would be invisible, darlin'. What kind of odds are we looking at here?" Biff smoothly steered his horse off road marvelling at the tired animals grace. "Speaking of invisible we're going to lose the light soon. An advantage for both parties to use, should the opportunity present itself"

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes,"

Sacha explained the situation to the freelancers, Kenji only hearing half of it. Haven hung low in the sky as they rode towards the ranch. He gathered his breath as they rode over the hilly terrain. It would be dark soon, he knew that much. The light was giving away to night, more room to sneak about. He'd be able to slink about this night. Till the job's done at least.

Kenji felt at home there on the back of a horse, the reins sat clenched in his hands as they pushed further out into the hills. The smell of the town faded as they moved. The sound of hooves drummed in Kenji's mind. He was at peace, his eyes scanned the horizon as his companions continued conversing.

Biff

"Speaking of invisible we're going to lose the light soon. An advantage for both parties to use, should the opportunity present itself"
Kenji's ear perked as Biff mention his prior musing. "Well that shouldn't pose too much of a problem. So long as we're not flanked, Everything that moves in front is a target. The merc's eyes left the horizon as he moved to look at Sacha. "Round about how many non-combatants?" He asked adding on to Biff's inquiry.

Sacha smiled to herself as the stead powered across the barren landscape. At least these two were eager.

"Not got a good look at them, to be honest. But they came in a small vessel, so maybe ten or so." That probably wasn't the odds the gunhands had hoped for and she quickly made an addendum to her answer. "I'm a good shot, mind. So is my pa - and my di-di too, if the old man let's him." The odds still weren't that healthy and the young woman grimaced at the thought of how long she'd already been away.

Ahead the terrain turn upwards and soon the trio were making their way up a gradual yet constant incline. On the wind came the feint echo of gunfire - the crack of rifles and the short clattering of an automatic weapon.

"Should be able to see the homestead at the top of this ridge." She called back. By the time they'd get up there, the sun would be gone.

A shape of the house loomed in the waning light. Biff was concerned about the possibility of facing ten men in his condition, but truth be told he was starting to feel like his old self again. Once he loses his limp he'll be unstoppable. "Ten men.... Well it is managable. It won't be easy but under cover of darkness we may be able to even the odds BEFORE the real gunfight begins" Biff felt the tired horse begin to slow. He eased off spurring the poor dear. He would keep up while letting his mount catch it's twenty third wind."So by your statements you're family is safe. No hostages then?"

Sacha started to reign in her steed as the trio made their way closer to the top of the ridge. The gunfire became more coherant now and the darkness that had sunk in around Biff and Kenji accentuated a dull glow of homestead lights just over the rise.
Biff

"So by your statements you're family is safe. No hostages then?"
"I.. I don't know. Things were fine when I left... all things considered. But..." She trailed off. It had taken the group at least 20 minutes to ride out there, meaning the young girl had been away for the better half of an hour. All things considered, it was a surprise the fight was still waging.

"Come touch me like I'm an ordinary man, have a look in my eyes,"

The distant sounds of gunshots resounded an anthem within Kenji's mind, his pistol begged to be unholstered. They reached the ridge as the last pale light of the sun's rays faded beyond the horizon. Streaks of crimson fell out of sight giving way to the velvet tinted sky. Light shone from the homestead, the occasional muzzle-flash announced itself with a pop.

Sacha

"I.. I don't know. Things were fine when I left... all things considered. But..."
Kenji felt genuinely bad for his employer. Ranching was her family's calling, their trade. Now their herd was to be snatched up by scum, not willing to work. It boiled his blood, he'd be sure to do his part to endure the herd, and her family were safe. On instinct he took note of the location of the muzzle flashes.

"How many rifles does your father own?" He called over his shoulder as they rode over the ridge.

Biff smiled taking note of the reports. "They won't be hard to flank once we know which muzzle flashes are friendly" This was the kind of work Biff enjoyed most. It brought him back to his days as a lawman on Siverhold. Helping a community and serving a people instead of hunting them. It seemed as if that had been a different life and so long ago. "We can make sure this crew never messes with another rancher ever again."
Kenji

"How many rifles does your father own?"
Biff listened carefully for the answer whould dictate tatics.
