The carnage led to chaos.

A tech ran into the room and turned and ran away.
Two more guards entered, raised their pistols but seemed uncertain as to whom to aim their fire.

One raised a com, "seal off the complex."

A tech in a control room tried to do just that, but software countermeasures prevented it.

Facility coms were filled with chatter, most of it wrong.

The Glory teams had their escapes routes planned out, and the route were flooding with techs and guards, all of whom were confused as to just what was happening.

Sylandra looked hard at Nick, "Time for plan B?" At his nod, she sent a burst of gunfire down the corridor leading into the chamber. With Beth cradled over her left shoulder, and her PLR-16 braced by sling, she swept the hallway, stepped out and turned left down a side corridor which ran to a dead end against an outer wall.

Taking a breath, she crouched, leaning the semi-conscious Beth on the floor beside her. As gunfire continued behind her, she dug out the ribbon coil from her satchel, pressed it firmly against the wall in a large circle, and attached a detonator to one end.

For brief moments she considered her plan, looked back at the others as they "held the fort" and she rolled up into a protective ball around the smaller woman. Whispering, "Be safe, little one."

She tapped the remote and a shaped charge blew a 4 foot diameter hole through concrete, steel reinforcement and plaster.

Timing, as ever, was not Beth's strong suit. By the time her fingers were starting to move, Sylandra was speaking, using words that suggested she was not under duress. Before Beth could react, she found Sylandra lowering her to the ground and as she started to raise her head she felt a little dizzy again and found that she still needed Sylandra's support.

Sylandra said: "Be safe, little one."

Beth was more than touched by the sentiment behind the words and by the feel of Sylandra's body wrapping around her. It took her back to a couple of times in her childhood when she had been very afraid and her father had provided strength and comfort. She felt that now but felt something more as well, something a father couldn't give his daughter. Such was Beth's feeling of safety within Sylandra's arms that even the sound of the explosion didn't cause her to react when normally, even if she was ready for it, the noise would have resulted in her having to be scraped off the ceiling.

"Thank you, Sylandra," she said as the echo of the explosion died away, twisting her head around so that she could look at Sylandra's face as she spoke. Then, on an impulse, she planted a brief kiss on any part of Sylandra's face she could reach; Beth was hoping for her lips but she was happy to take what she could get without interfering with the escape.

"I should be able to walk now," she added after a few more moments though she couldn't help but feel that she would rather be carried as long as it was Sylandra doing the carrying.

Ian hated Suits. He hated being one. Yet here he was acting the part while still trying to be a Captain

The EMP went off behind him taking care of the stored programming. The copies he had in his possession would be safe. At least safe from the EMP

A bullet tucked at his Duster and he fired back in the direction it had come.

'click'

He was empty.

He ducked down and behind the door

Cover me.

He began to reload. It would take just a bit longer than usual because he did not have have his speed loader.

"Time for Plan B?"

He heard Syl yell and he nodded. Plan B was do what ever was needed to survive.

He shook his head as a round pinged off the metal part of the door he had ducked behind. As much as he hated Suits, he hated Murphy more. He always showed up at the worst possible time.

Once he was reloaded he stood and right after Syl sprayed the corridor he was out, with Abe at his side and Mike at his back protecting Syl and Beth as Syl placed the shaped charge that would get them all out of here.

Once the charge blew he ordered everyone through and almost pushed Abe, going through almost next to her.

"Leave'em a present."

He told Syl. If there were any grenades left one would be left. It would slow them down.

Taking a moment, Ian ripped the suit top of his body and strapped his other gun belt around his waist, on the move. He'd tie it later. He picked up the top and stuffed it in his back pack.

They were not safe yet, but he began to think that they might just survive it.

Abe winced as she heard Ian's gun make a 'click' noise. He was out of ammo. He ducked down behind a door.

Cover me.

She raised an eyebrow, like she wouldn't have. Duh. She was his bodyguard. She stood next to the door and shot anyone who wasn't part of their crew as they came in ahead of them. She was good at what she did and every shot went through the not quite as strong as armor visual shields. She sure hoped that Mike was covering their six.

"Time for Plan B?"

It was obvious that it was Syl and she saw Ian's nod out of the corner of her eye. She also knew what plan B was; do what you needed to get back to the ship.

A round pinged off the metal part of the door that Ian was behind. Abe didn't even wince, she knew it was coming and the one shooting was already a dead man, but the shot had gotten off as she took out the one in front of him. She was just glad that he had to shoot around his buddy to fire the gun. Otherwise she would have been showing Ian first hand how she would place her life before his.

Once out of the room and into the chamber, she was surprised to see Syl carrying Beth. Had she been hit? A quick once over showed that she had no blood on her and none was on Syl either. She didn't know what happened, but that would be found out later - after they got back to the ship.

After the hole blew, Ian ordered everyone through and also basically shoved her out, but at least he stayed aside her so she could see where he was. At least she could make sure any bullets that came their way would make him their target.

"Leave'em a present."

While they moved, Ian had somehow slipped off the suit top from his body, stuffed it in his back pack and strapped his other gun belt around his waist. That kind of move impressed her.

Now... the thing was to get back to the ship.

The harder thing was making sure that Ian in particular didn't get shot on the way. He was headstrong and too used to doing all that himself. She just wished he understood her commitment to him and he didn't have to worry about her. Between the two of them, his chances of survival doubled, even though hers would plummet a bit. If he didn't let her do her job, then his survival chances dropped.

Gorram it... She just wished that an Alliance officer coming into an Alliance facility was a reason to wear body armor. But if they had come wearing more hardware than they already had, the bad guys would have been tipped off sooner.

"Thank you, Sylandra,"

She felt the brush of Beth's lips against hers and for just the briefest of moments, Syl was distracted. She wanted to respond, but the gunfire was getting hot again. She gave Beth's hand a tight squeeze, and then turned as Ian and the others came up.

"Leave'em a present."

Sylandra nodded as the others slipped through the hole. She pushed Beth through and turned to spray a short burst down the corridor to keep their followers from getting too close.

"Just the thing."

She rolled through the hole, stopping just long enough to slip one last surprise out of her bag. The old grenade in the tin can with a line of monofilament wire. She primed it, set the can to one side of the hole, and pressed the sticky tab on the line to the other side of the hole, just high enough to catch someone's foot as they followed. She saw Beth had regained enough composure to be up and running as well, and she made her own mad dash behind the others.

Somehow Beth sensed Sylandra's distraction and silently berated herself for being the cause at an inappropriate moment but at the same time it gave her hope for the future. It gave her reason not to put anyone, especially Sylandra, at any more risk than absolutely necessary and she got up and ran like a rabbit, her short legs working hard.

"I so need to get fitter," she thought as she ran, her muscles aching and her breath starting to come in ragged gasps.

"I think Sylandra has a lot to teach me," and she felt a thrill run through her body at the prospect.

It was hard to resist the temptation to look over her shoulder to make sure that Sylandra was behind her and not lying on the ground behind them, a victim of some soldier's bullet. "You haven't heard Sylandra's surprise," she told herself but it wasn't enough to reassure herself because they could have been shooting from behind the trip wire.

"Sy .... lan .... dra," she called as loudly as she could. "Are .... you .... still .... with .... us?" Her syllables and words came out singly with each exhale, her lungs not having the capacity to do more. If Sylandra didn't respond she intended to stop and go back for her whatever the consequences to herself.

Sylandra brought up the rear, waiting to hear the explosion indicating that the pursuit had run into her little "surprise." As Beth struggled forward, Syl answered her.

"Still here, but we need to get back to Blaze as fast as possible; hopefully there hasn't been an alert on her yet. Ian?"

The little surprise went off. There was no sign of any more pursuit for Sylandra and Beth.

They arrived first at the exit, also their entry point. Blaze waited outside, a dozen armed and armored soldiers did too. Though they didn't seem certain at what to do, as these VIPs came from the building.

A young lieutenant moved toward them trying not to look as uncertain as he was. Not some much fright, but confusion.

"There was, a an alert in command and control. Are uh, your people out, any contact?"

A more grizzled and older sergeant wasn't buying it. Off to the side he ordered to privates to stand ready and be able to fire on ... the VIPS.

Relieved that Sylandra was still close behind her, Beth took the hint and focused on running. She was walking fit, having spent a fair bit of time walking with Alice but sustained running at what was close to a sprint for her short legs was quite another thing.

They arrived at the exit point and Beth stopped suddenly as she saw the troops between her and Blaze. She put her hands on her knees and gasped for breath, using her eyes to look around while appearing just to be trying to recover. Beth might have been a non-combatant but as a general practice doctor she had learned to observe and she could see that while the officer might be prepared to give them some benefit of the doubt, his sergeant was not.

She stood upright again and waved her arms in the direction from whence they had come.

"Yes, all out. It's .... it's a mess in there. I do ... don't kn...know what's g...going on." Beth stammered, not needing to act, her reaction to the fighting and to her own temerity in being the one to speak giving her all the help she needed. "We... we were j..just c...com..p..pleting our l...last checks wh..when we were a..t..tacked." she added, her frown lines very deep and her expression giving every impression that she was about to go into shock or burst into tears or both. There wasn't much need to act in that respect either.

Ian was the last ... next to the last to come around the corridor toward the exit. He saw the armed men before they saw hem. He ducked back.

"Ai-Ya! Ruttin bunch a do gooders. Reminds me of me.

He pulled off his coat and one belt as Beth did the initial talking. The Duster was not exactly Alliance Issue and two weapons was not standard procedure either. So both were stuffed into his back pack with a cringe on his face.

He looked at Abe, he knew she would not leave him.

"Follow my lead"

The time it took to do this was 27 seconds.

One pistol in hand, his face and uniform darkened with soot and explosion and blood he trotted out of the building and into the open.

"Sergeant. Thank the Gods above and below. I'm glad you're here. The attack, it came so fast. Your men in the Control Center ... They gave their lives for us. One of my crew ... He didn't make it.

He paused, most of what he said was a bold face lie. But very near the truth. That was the best way to lie, keep it as true as possible. He and his had taken the lives of the men and women in the Control center and he had not lost a soul ... yet. He hoped to keep it that way.

"Send a detachment back up the corridor. You might be able to catch them as they come out this way. We have to report back to Command. We'll need an escort to the shuttle."

The Blaze was within sight and only Forty yards away. Trying to shoot while traveling that far was the way to an early death. Escorted that far was a different matter.

He just hoped it worked.

Before reaching the tarmac, Sylandra had slipped her pistol back into the side compartment of her shoulder bag. It was bulky, but at least out of sight. Beth had gotten ahead of her, and as they reached the encampment, she stayed just behind her, using the smaller woman as partial cover. If she had to draw, it would be more of a surprise to the opposing team.

Then Ian and Mike stepped around the corner, Abe must have held back.

As Ian addressed the sergeant, Syl kept her eyes on the other troopers, ready to react as needed. She pressed her left hand against Beth's back; a promise of security, and if things went bleak, she could push Beth one way or another, depending on necessity.

The sergeant saluted. As he did so his seemed to end up in a quickly able to fire position. "Sir. Standard procedure is to secure this exit and take all survivors to the designated holding area."

"Sergeant." called out the Lieutenant. "Comply with the Commander's orders." He indicated who was to go. You, you, you, and you. Come with me and we'll get these people to their ship.

The Sergeant met Dugan's eyes. "yes sir." he said with little respect in his voice. The gestured, "the rest of you with me."

The Lieutenant gestured, "this way sir." and he led the way to Blaze.

"I must have imagined I said that," she thought, having detected no sign off acknowledgement of her statements to the officer. "I'm in shock," she decided, believing that a better option than acknowledging that she might be insane.

"It is possible I just didn't say it loud enough for him to hear," she rationalised, as a third option. There was certainly enough noise and confusion and Beth knew herself to be softly spoken even in anger or distress.

Whatever her contribution may or may not have been, there was no mistaking the effect of Ian's arrival on the scene and she was glad the figurative spotlight was directed at him. Anonymity was much more Beth's style and her statements, imagined or otherwise had been a significant departure from the way she liked to behave.

"Whatever it was then, it's shock now," she thought as her knees turned to jelly and her body started shaking as the adrenaline started to drain from her system. It was only Sylandra's comforting hand on her back that kept her upright. Beth focused her attention on Blaze and when the lieutenant started to move toward the shuttle, she did too though she was none too steady on her feet.

As Ian came along side of Beth he spoke softly, only for her, and Syl, to hear.

Good job coming up with that.

Then louder,

"You dont look so good. You did well back there and handled your own. We'll get you taken care of once we get back shipboard.

He was concerned about his crew. No one was injured, yet. For that he was glad but didn't know how long that would last.

As they moved forward, Sylandra slipped one arm through Beth's, giving support to both women as they passed the guards. She feigned weakness to possibly throw off the guard's attention.

"I'll get started runnin' preflight once Beth's settled. Gorrem, what a mess, eh?"

She kept up the pace to get through the hatch and onboard as soon as possible, without being too hurried.

Abe hung back a little as the others approached the men outside on their quest to re-board Blaze. She wasn't too far back, just far enough that she could see better their surroundings. She didn't like that Ian had to put his guns away, but she knew it was a smart move. They needed to be as unassuming as possible.

"Sir. Standard procedure is to secure this exit and take all survivors to the designated holding area."

Yeah... That wouldn't be preferable. Abe looked around, silently tallying how many folks were there, plus keeping an eye on the sergeant. The way his posture was, well Abe didn't like it.

"Sergeant." "Comply with the Commander's orders." You, you, you, and you. Come with me and we'll get these people to their ship.

"yes sir." "the rest of you with me."

"this way sir."

Abe kept up with the group, her eyes still roaming the scene. She also looked over her crew mates and noticed that Beth didn't look too terribly well. Sylandra seemed to be the only thing holding the woman on her feet and she had the shakes bad enough that they could been seen from quite some distance.

"You dont look so good. You did well back there and handled your own. We'll get you taken care of once we get back shipboard."

Ian was using Beth's unsteadiness as a way to draw suspicion from them. Folks would be sympathetic to the girl's feelings and be less wary of foul play on their part.

Hopefully.

But for now, Abe watched and waited.

Ian said: "Good job coming up with that.

"So someone did hear me," Beth thought. She was going to respond but decided that it would be better to make a point of looking over her shoulder, not at the guards but in the direction they had come from as though expecting some sort of pursuit.

Ian said: "You dont look so good. You did well back there and handled your own. We'll get you taken care of once we get back shipboard."

"Thank you, Sir," she replied. She wasn't sure that she had done well, she had fainted after all but she believed that Ian wanted to keep up the appearance of being terrified. She didn't need to work hard on that, being both predisposed to fail under stress and to be cursed with an overactive imagination. She was very pleased when Sylandra slipped an arm through hers but what did surprise her was that Sylandra was leaning on her as well and for a heart-stopping moment thought that Sylandra might really be injured, decided that she was probably acting and then decided she shouldn't make any such assumption.

"Sylandra said: "I'll get started runnin' preflight once Beth's settled. Gorrem, what a mess, eh?"

"Are ... are you okay?" she asked Sylandra, her own voice betraying both her concern for Sylandra and her very real fear that they might still come under fire from the guards. It was hard keeping control of her fear but she managed to, just, mostly because of Sylandra really was injured then it was up to her to get Sylandra safely on board. If they achieved that she didn't intend to "be settled" but to ensure that if Sylandra was injured she was patched up enough to fly and if she wasn't, to look after herself as soon as they were out of sight so that Sylandra could get Glory up and running as quickly as possible.

"You've been a dead weight long enough Bethany," she told herself and renewed her silent promise to get Sylandra to teach her as much as she could. She didn't expect to achieve competency but she did intend not to be such a liability next time.

Ian had stopped at the hatch and ushered in everyone, even Abe. He saluted the squad of men and thanked them for their help and sealed the hatch. As soon as it was closed and locked he shouted

"Go, go. Hot start if you have to but get us out of here!"

He needn't have yelled as Syl was already on the job and shuttle lifted off as the first explosions rocked the compound.

As the shuttle rose Ian saw men and women thrown around like rag dolls as he watched out the front view port from behind Syl and he wondered if those that had died had been the lucky ones.
