Central Control.

There were a dozen stations set up, all facing numerous larger display screens on a big wall.
Only half the stations were manned. A single guard stood at the door, snapping to attention when Ian and the Bureaucrat entered

Three younger persons were being talked to by a fourth in the far corner.

=======

Bomb position 3 of 12.

So far so good, no one noticed the placing of the bombs. The review and inspection seemed to have everyone almost pretending that the Glory Saboteurs were nearly invisible.

Sylandra made her way from one station to the next vacant one, her PDA in one hand. She would study a fictitious readout, apparently comparing against the screen display on the console before tapping a key on her PDA. Surreptitiously, she would slip her left hand into her satchel, gripping one of the small packages and with her thumb, toggling the switch, before slipping it into position under the console and pressing the sticky block into place.

And then on to the next. She smiled easily at Beth nearby, acting relaxed and casual.

It was harder for Beth to smile, it being her first time as an infiltrator and saboteur, and feeling the weight of worrying about both doing something to jeopardise the operation and or Sylandra, and the enormity of what they were doing. She was a doctor helping to do something that would almost certainly result in the deaths and injury of many people and it sat uncomfortably on her small shoulders.

"Perhaps we can set off the fire alarm; at least give them some chance to get out," she thought as Sylandra placed the third surprise.

Sylandra's smile though, elicited a smile in response because Sylandra had that effect on Beth.

"One way or the other, Bethany," she told herself, knowing her propensity for sitting on the fence. "Whole-hearted support or pull the plug," she demanded of herself. The memory of Sylandra's smile surfaced and she knew then that it couldn't be the latter; Sylandra had too much of a grip on her heart and, knowing what recently revealed history had proven the Alliance would be prepared to do with the software she couldn't find it in her to doubt the intent behind their mission.

With the decision made and with the hope of more smiles from Sylandra, she put more effort into looking like she was also taking part in the inspection, checking around Sylandra's shoulder (Beth being too short to look over it) at the readout on the PDA and appearing to ask the odd question about what she was seeing as though she were in training. At least, she was trying to convince herself that she was looking at the screen of the PDA but she did find the swell of Sylandra's breast rather distracting.

Bomb position 12.
Finished, each in sync to go off in 45 minutes.

A young military officer stepped forward.

He had a gun drawn and pointed at Sylandra. "Excuse me ladies, would you mind stepping back from whatever device you've just placed." A smart young officer, he'd noticed something just out of the ordinary and had taken to task to look just a little closer. One of the new Alliance, post war officers.

One of the civil servant tech moved to block his line of fire. "Sir, they're inspectors, we're to give them full clearance."

The young officer slightly distracted moved to get the line of sight for his pistol back.

Sylandra smiled at the officer, but kept behind the technician as she slipped her shoulder bag off her shoulder and dropped into the seat she had just left. She opened her arms, palms outward and nodded toward the bag.

"I was running a diagnostic on each of the consoles. Nothing really drastic, and you could see..." she distracted his attention to where her bag blocked the device, and as he stepped closer, she moved.

Catching his gun hand between her palms in a classic capturing maneuver, she twisted right and up, turning the gun against his grip and into her own.

With the same movement, she twisted her body into his, catching his foot with her ankle and driving him off balance. In an instant, he is on the floor and she had his gun pointed at him.

"You should be more careful about who you point guns at."

Her eyes never left him as she waited on Ian's reaction. Bluff or Kick the Can?

"Oh my," Beth exclaimed when the military man approached with his pistol drawn and pointing at Sylandra. She found herself moving to step between the man and Sylandra but one of the technicians had already done so and instead she hovered indecisively. She was not brave, or at least did not think of herself in such terms but Sylandra had been threatened and her instinct had been to protect her. It was only as she found time to think about the enormity of what she had nearly done that she started to shake and feel a little faint.

She saw him move to get a clear line but fear had overtaken her and she found her feet frozen to the floor. All Beth could do was stand and watch Sylandra take care of the situation herself and the ease with which she handled it surprised her.

"Wow!" Beth exclaimed as the man ended up on the floor with his own gun being pointed at him by Sylandra. She might have said more but she didn't want to distract Sylandra in case the man too advantage of it. Realising her own vulnerability to being used against Sylandra, she took a couple of steps away and then looked around to make sure that there was no other danger in the vicinity. Again there wasn't much she could do about it other than alert Sylandra but she knew that even a second's warning might make all the difference.

But even having given herself something to do hadn't stopped the weakness in her knees or the trembling and she feared that if someone even said 'boo' to her she would drop to the floor in a dead faint.

The young military officer had grit. Despite the look of surprise on his face he reached to his collar and touch a button. "Level Five Alert." he said sharply, his eyes on Sylandra, expecting to die.

As soon as they had entered the room, Ian had activated his PDA with all the latest invasive and worming tech. It was all wireless and would not leave a trace. At least not until it sent the data it was after back to Ian's PDA. The PDA was modified to relay the information back to the Glory in data bursts through the Blaze. In a matter of moments Ian had a complete copy of the program for the CorTEX 2.0 relayed back to his ship and programs there that would analyze each sector and copy it is sections for later reassembly.

He had walked around the room in the opposite direction as Syl and counted the number of explosives she had planted and those of the others. He knew he had just about 30 minutes to make his escape with his crew and no bullets fired.

That may not happen now as Syl flipped the guard onto his back side

Especially when he activated his alert.

"You dumb Fee-Fee Pi-Gu! Just what the rut do you think you are doing? Being a big hero? Heros are those people that get other people killed. You ever been in combat, boy?"

He spoke down to the man on the floor as her rounded on him giving him a proper dressing down as any Drill Sergeant would have done. As he had done so many times before.

"I will have your hide for interrupting my inspection. I'll have your bosses hide. You have a choice. Call off that alert and help me finish this inspection, or dont and you and your Superior will end up hauling dirt out of the Krane Penal Mines for the rest of your sorry lives!! Dung Lu Ma!!

Ian was so close to just shooting this piece of ruttin Go-Se as it was. He had to hold himself in check as he spoke to the man, bending over close enough to spit on his as he yelled in the guard face.

Sylandra smiled as Ian dressed down the soldier. She held the gun up, popped the magazine release, catching the clip with her other hand and then pulled the action back, ejecting the chambered round. With a second tug, she pulled the action apart and dropped gun, magazine and action on the floor in front of the trooper.

"Next time, be smart about who you pull on."

She turned and snatched up her shoulder bag, and winked at Beth.

"Done here, boss. Shall we travel?"

Beth panicked when the soldier pressed the alarm button, shrinking back against a wall and bitting her hand to stop herself from making any noise louder than a muffled moan. Then Ian waded in and her panic seemed suddenly silly and for a few moments she almost began to feel sorry for the man lying on the ground. She hoped that she was never on the wrong end of something like that from Ian.

Beth caught Sylandra's wink and as a result for a moment she thought Sylandra's statement and question was directed at her which confused her because she had though she had been playing the part of the trainee, then her brain caught up and she realised that Sylandra had been talking to Ian. Again her face turned red with embarrassment, despite the knowledge that the others would be unaware of her mistake; Beth was never one to use facts to prevent herself from feeling embarrassed.

For a couple of seconds she stood frozen to the spot and then realised that if she didn't get her act together they might accidentally leave her behind and she scurried to Sylandra's side, the urge to take her hand almost overwhelming and she only just caught herself when her hand brushed Sylandra's. Her desire to kiss Sylandra was strong but her awareness of the circumstances were sufficient to ensure that she didn't give into the temptation. Nevertheless, there was an expression on her face as she gazed at Sylandra that would have been hard to interpret as anything other than an internal battle to prevent herself from doing just that.

"That was amazing, Sylandra," she commented, her tone expressing her genuine feelings. Her voice was soft, though, because she didn't want to give the game away by being overheard saying something that might get them all into trouble. "Do you think you might be able to teach me to do something like that?" she added in the same soft voice.

The Guard, red faced stood, picked up his weapon, all three pieces of it and thumbed his collar mic.

"Cancel alert. Code Alpha Tango One. Repeat Cancel alert."

He looked at Ian

"Sorry for the confusion, Sir. It wont happen again."

He nodded to the others and moved back to his post. If this man was an enemy, he have to have more help. If they stayed here for a few minutes more, he would have the help he needed.

Ian nodded to the man and looked over at Syl.

"finish the tour and meet back up with Carlos then get back to the shuttle. We leave in twenty."

They had covered this so Syl would know that the Twenty minute remark would actually mean ten. It was time to go. He turned back to the suit

"Where is your redundant systems? I need to make sure they are safe and up to standards."

Abe whipped around when she heard the sound of a body hitting the floor. She winced when he called for an alarm via his comm. It took everything she had to turn and make swiss cheese out of the boy. She watched Ian go into uber-authoritative mode, which was kinda hot. She stifled a small smile as he dressed the guy down.

"You dumb Fee-Fee Pi-Gu! Just what the rut do you think you are doing? Being a big hero? Heros are those people that get other people killed. You ever been in combat, boy?"

Not kinda hot... Definitely hot.

Then Sylandra joined in on the "fun."

"Next time, be smart about who you pull on." "Done here, boss. Shall we travel?"

That was quite true.

As the berating went on, she moved back subtly and attached an explosive as Sylandra had done on the other side of the room. It was the only one needed on this side. She eyed Beth as she returned to Ian's side. Poor thing looked like she was terrified.

"We are indeed done, Sir," she confirmed. Now if this idiot would rescind the alert, it would make their lives much easier.

"Cancel alert. Code Alpha Tango One. Repeat Cancel alert." "Sorry for the confusion, Sir. It wont happen again."

Thank God.

Ian nodded at the guy in acknowledgement then addressed her ship mates.

"finish the tour and meet back up with Carlos then get back to the shuttle. We leave in twenty."

Abe glanced at her watch for a moment, marking the time, knowing exactly when 10 minutes was. She just had to make sure they both got back in one piece.

"Where is your redundant systems? I need to make sure they are safe and up to standards."

Lord, she almost felt bad for the guy. Well, actually she did feel bad for the guy. Things were only going to get progressively worse for the guy when their plan got going.

So she stood near Ian and watched both what was going on in front of her, along with what was going on in her periphery.

The young officer was one of the best.
He'd asked for this important assignment because he knew just that. It was important.

His cleverness was still under appreciated, even and especially by his superiors. Today it might save everything.

""Cancel alert. Code Alpha Tango One. Repeat Cancel alert. Sorry for the confusion, Sir. It wont happen again."
was not a cancellation. It was code for ' under duress - covert alert '

The young officer continued to play humbled.

"redundant systems are over them, purple panel."

Humbled, Until the armored small units of four began streaming toward the crew of Glory. Guns ready, moving quietly.

They came into view.

At the first possible moment the young officer, as Abe looked just a little away from him, he struck like lightning, dodging the first movement of her corrected aim he swept her legs from her and produced a thin dagger from his sleeve.

Done, and done. The charges were all set, the guard down on the floor, and Ian had the situation in hand. Sylandra turned back and shifted her shoulder bag, her left hand tucked inside it. Things still didn't feel right. Beth was beside her, and something caught the edge of her line of sight.

The ruse (or counter ruse) came apart. The thumping of steel boots hitting the entry brought her attention around, and she saw the armored figures enter, guns swinging to seek out targets.

"Get down! Now!" she hissed at Beth. There was no time to ensure the others would be safe.

The one technician that had been vouching for her was close enough to grab. She caught his wrist in her right hand, twisted, and he found himself pulled tight up to her chest. She ducked her chin just low enough that only her eyes were visible through his collar. At the same time, out came her left hand with the sticky bomb. She locked her left arm through the tech's arm, pinning him in place, and transferred the grenade to her right. A quick flip of the trigger, and she underhanded the ball of C4 at the first trooper. It landed with a splat on the center of his torso armor and she ducked into the protection of the tech's heavier body.

The blast tore a hole dead center in his chest. The concussion proved disheartening for the unarmored techs in the room, but the smallness of the bomb was such that little other damage would occur.

If she had had the time, if she had been able to find her voice Beth would have howled in frustration as the continuing story of her life, to be interrupted at all the wrong moments, unfolded yet again. She had neither.

Sylandra hissed: "Get down! Now!"

Fight, Flight, Fright, the three reactions to danger, wired into the primitive part of the brain, each individual, whatever the species, biased toward one, modified by the situation. A possum threatened but with an escape route will run; threatened and backed into a corner, will fight ferociously; caught in the headlights of a vehicle it will freeze. In the first two cases, an identifiable threat and the response is flight or fight; in the last, just two large orbs rushing toward it with no apparent danger between and yet that is where the danger is.

Beth was not a possum, had the advantage of intelligence and the ability to reason but she had never fought, had never been backed into a corner with no escape or had a reason to take the fight to the enemy. Her problem was not that she couldn't recognise the danger but that there was too much of it, she didn't know how to deal with it and there was nowhere to run.

For what seemed an eternity Beth was frozen in place as she tried to make sense of the words and the world went mad around her. She watched, as if in slow motion, Abe's feet were swept from under her by the young officer, as the armoured soldiers appeared from around a corner and as Sylandra hissed her warning and grabbed the technician. Sylandra's words were still working their way from her ear drum to her processing centre when her friend threw the sticky bomb at one of the advancing soldiers. It was only as the spark of the detonator flashed into existence and started the chain reaction in the C4 that her forebrain finally began to make sense of the words and relate them to their current situation, though the two events were unrelated.

If the speed of the reaction within the sticky bomb had been slower, if light travelled less quickly and if sound, travelling at a mere 330 metres per second or there-abouts, hadn't had such a short distance to travel that to the human brain the flash and bang arrived effectively simultaneously, Beth might have been able to apply some rationality to her actions. Luck was not on Beth's side, something that would not have seem unusual to her, if she had had the chance to analyse it.

Nevertheless, finally she started to drop, not because she had willed it so, not because some fragment of the sticky bomb had caught her, nor because she had been shot, for up to that moment, no weapons had been fired in her direction but because she had become overwhelmed and her brain had chosen to protect itself by shutting down.

Beth had, quite simply, fainted.

Ian had nodded to the guard and started to move in the direction indicated when he felt Abe fall. Or rather, he felt the lack at her presence at his side. He wheeled and pulled Ryder and fired in a single motion, hitting the guard between the eyes. He fell back against the Suit. Ian did not think, he fired again, catching the suit in his left eye and dropping him on the spot.

He turned and fired four more time hitting the three tech by the consoles in the back of the head and only one did he have to hit twice.

No one could know that it was his crew that pulled this off. He took up the Suits PDA and ran to the middle of the room. He pulled out an EMP device and set the timer. It would erase and destroy any electronic device that was not properly shielded. He moved to the Redundant Systems and opened them to make sure that the EMP would take them as well.

He saw the fighting that Syl was doing and looked over at Abe. He did not see blood but he did see that the guard had taken a knife and wondered if his new love would make it out alive.

He pushed the thought away and took his Duster out his his pack. It had been right under the EMP. He took out his other gun belt and strapped it around his waist.

A bullet whizzed by he head as he tied the last strap in place.

He took up his Duster and in a whirling motion put it on and pulled both weapons.

"Syl, pick up Beth. Abe, Mike. On me. No one lives. Take out all cameras Get back to the shuttle. We are out of time."

He turned and fired into the those coming his way that would try to take his family from him.

Death danced her way into the group and laughed as the blood flew.

The officer caught her off guard and the next thing she knew, she was on her back and the guy was thrusting a knife at her. She turned, rolling away, but not before he glanced off her side. She felt it cut through flesh, but she knew it wasn't deep. Might need a small weave, but she wasn't in any danger from it.

She really needed to start working out with Ian again. He was the one who really helped her hone what hand to hand skills she had.

She popped back up on her feet quick like a bunny, but the guy straightened up to, just in time for Ian's bullet to take out the guy.

Right between the eyes.

They in quick succession he and Sylandra took care of everyone else.

"Hey... I didn't get to shoot anything," she murmured under her breath.

Ian had grabbed the suit's PDA and got to the middle of the room to set up the last part before barking out his next set of orders.

"Syl, pick up Beth. Abe, Mike. On me. No one lives. Take out all cameras Get back to the shuttle. We are out of time."

She nodded and quickly took out any cameras there in the room. Single shots. Fast as she could be as she heard boots approaching. Do these guys know anything about stealth? She also noticed Beth laid out on the floor, she didn't see what had happened, but she also didn't see any blood neither. She couldn't dwell on it long as folks were approaching.

She then took up position next to Ian as the bullets started to fly. Upon hitting the second guard coming in the door (Ian got the first one), she felt a little better. She she felt like a contributor.

"If there are more, we should try ta get some kind of cover," she said, moving up a little so she could cover Ian a little better. "Which way we need ta go now?"

Beth didn't stir as Ian dealt with the remaining opposition which was probably just as well because she would not have taken well the slaughter of the technicians, especially the one who had tried to intercede on their behalf. It was only when the firing stopped that Beth started the slow process of coming around. It would be some time before she was conscious enough to be able to look at her surroundings, let alone form any sort of conclusion as to what had really just happened. Having not witnessed anything more than the detonation of Sylandra's sticky bomb and being blissfully unaware of what the bomb had done to the soldier, it would be easy enough to convince her that the technicians had been caught in the cross fire and as likely as not been hit by weapons fire from their own side.

For the moment, at least, the point was moot and only if Sylandra delayed long enough for Beth to become aware of her surroundings would there be any question of Ian and his crew needing to be economical or misleading with the truth.

As for whether Beth could handle the realities of war and would be able to understand the terrible dilemma that faced a captain between protecting his crew and putting them at risk through sparing those who could perhaps, especially to a naive and romantically inclined mind, be considered to be "innocents", only time would tell. That situation had been deferred for the time being.

Beth let out a small mewl of distress but otherwise showed little sign of having risen above basic hindbrain instinctive responses to stress.

Sylandra felt a bullet sting her in the side, and she checked the lightweight mesh armor undershirt that she always wore in combat. The round had tore her blouse, and most likely dented the armor, but there was no blood seeping through.

She glanced down at Beth just as two rounds caught the tech she was using as a body shield. She felt his body twitch and go limp. Still holding him up, she pulled Bruce from her bag (it wouldn't have been appropriate to have him in his usual cross draw on her hip), and tucked his snout under the tech's armpit. A full burst of 6mm tore out from the extended, suppressed barrel, and caught two more armored guards across the legs. Their thinner armor there didn't help as armor piercing bullets tore ligaments and knee caps to shreds. Unable to hold their balance, they went down, catching stray rounds in heads and shoulders as they fell.

The last trooper ducked behind a door jab, hoping to protect himself from the incessant gunfire and explosions happening in the communications room.

"On my way, Sir."

She threw the limp tech toward the remaining gunfire before slinging Bruce and pulling one more grenade from her bag. She primed it and rolled it toward the doorway before turning to grab Beth and rolling her over Syl's shoulder in a fireman's carry.

Even being heaved over Sylandra's shoulders like a sack of potatoes wasn't enough to immediately bring Beth out of her fugue state and other than a little moan of protest there was little to suggest that she was in any way conscious of what was going on around her. It wasn't helped by the fact that she didn't know what was happening and everything seemed upside-down.

Real consciousness returned with a jolt though she didn't know what caused the transition. Beth realised that she was being carried, mentally explored herself and couldn't find anything that suggested an injury and came to the uncomfortable conclusion that she had done something silly, like faint. She was glad that she was facing backwards and that whoever was carrying her couldn't see the red that had suffused her cheeks.

"Who is carrying me?" she wondered, not realising that it was the one person that she would like to be carried by though in rather better circumstances.

"You could try opening your eyes, Bethany," she told herself. "That might give you a clue." But it might also have given her a view of the carnage that she was sure must have occurred. Waiting a few more steps seemed like the better course of action.

"Have I been captured?" she wondered while she counted to ten. "If so, you might not want to let them know you are awake," she suggested to herself.

Slowly Beth opened her eyes, hoping that she wasn't being observed. "Sylandra?" she thought, recognising the clothing and the shape of a rear end that was most definitely not male. "Is she captured too? Are they making her carry me?"

She decided to work on that assumption and try to communicate with Sylandra as unobtrusively as she could. Her head was hanging down which put her mouth inconveniently far from Sylandra's ears but her free arm was hanging down which put her hand conveniently close to that rear end. "Knowing Morse Code would be handy right now," she thought but there had never been a reason to learn it. Her other arm was being held but it still left her fingers free and somewhat concealed. Beth tapped her fingers rhythmically against Sylandra's body, hoping that it would alert Sylandra to the fact that she was conscious without alerting any potential guards.
