REX YANGTREE
(permission and input from Ayden and Siobhan) ------ ------------------ -------- AFTER THE SHIP'S Meeting: ![]() Rex had taken out some of his gear while Ayden had been working her muffin magic in the kitchen of the ship, or what passed as a kitchen. He'd loaded up his collection and mounted them on the wall, not usually the first thing he did, but with Ayden due to unpack soon, it seemed a nice way to claim the berth. Ayden returned first after the meeting. Item on the wall:

Rex and Ayden's Bunk Ayden got back to the bunk she unfortunately shared with Rex Yangtree first. How he managed to arrange them to be roomies, she didn't know, but it pissed her off. When she saw that he had hung his guns up above the bunk like he was claiming ownership of the only sleeping surface, she got livid. And where exactly did he expect her to sleep? she asked herself, her blood pressure rising in anger. Oh Hell no... Two can play this game. So she opened up her case of chef knives and laid them across the actual bed. He may have taken possession of the wall, but that was it. He could have all the wall space he wanted, but the bed was hers. She even went as far as burying the blade of her largest knife straight into the top of the mattress, above when the pillow was, blade side pointing outward of course for safety. It would be out of the way if she actually wanted to sleep, but the message was clear. She wondered exactly what he wanted to talk about. She almost hoped that he acted like a cad, because the thought of decking him seemed very enjoyable at the moment. She smiled as she imagined how that would go before realizing that she did need to change clothes and wash up. She didn't have much time left. So she did it with alacrity and happy she was almost done and he hadn't come back yet. Even if he arrived early, he would knock first. It was only gentlemanly. But Rex was hardly a gentleman as he walked in just as she was mid way through slipping her shirt on. If she was a cartoon, steam would have blown out her ears. "You're an asshole," she said as she finished pulling the white, cropped and slightly food stained t-shirt on. "Ever think of knocking first?" Edited by abbey, Jan 4 2015, 06:42 PM.

He tried to avert his eyes, but he couldn't. Her exposed soft firm belly beckoned, memories of that belly flickered in his head. Again he seemed flustered, as when he first saw her back at the transfer station. "Uh," he turned back to the door, flicked the lock open and closed, then softly shut the door and turned the lock. His suggestion that she could have locked the door was clear, but he said nothing. His face softened from the mask he wore for the crew. His eyes looked over the bed, like some sort of knife display. But her own message was clear about what the blades on the bed meant. So why, why was she here. Not looking for some long lost love reunion. He'd been a fool to assume that, the hostility said otherwise. "So Ayden. Why did you find me, track me down? Hell, how did you track me down?" No one knew where.... well, his sister. "Ah, Cleopatra." He nodded his head having answered his own question. "Now why would she send you to me?" Was this a family matter, did Cleo need his help? There was the look of the younger Rex, concern. The interested look at what lay beneath the eyes of Ayden. And all he could see was hate. He took a step back against the door.

He didn't even have the decency to look away when he came into the room just as she was finishing getting ready, but Ayden caught the look in his eyes that reminded her of another time. It was like looking back into the past and getting a peek of how it had been. Ayden was a little confused. Rex seemed almost nervous. But that was all ruined by his not so subtle act of reminding her that she should have locked the door. She supposed she could have, but things had piled up in her head as she was getting ready and that particular detail was lost. Jerk. Then his features softened just like he used to when they were alone together and he didn't have to keep up the 'hard as nails' veneer he usually wore around others. What was he playing at? Was he trying to play her? At least he got her point across with the knives on the bed. She had staked her claim. She went over and quickly put them all back inside the cloth that held them, rolled them up and slid them beneath the pillow. Having a large knife in the open and close by when they talked was probably not be a good idea. "So Ayden. Why did you find me, track me down? Hell, how did you track me down?" She just raised her eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest. She knew it wouldn't take him long to figure it out. "Ah, Cleopatra." "Now why would she send you to me?" "I told her that I was delivering personal letters from my ailing father to some of the loyal men that served under him," she told him with a shrug. The way she said the word 'father' dripped of the same hate that she projected at Rex himself. "I was surprised that she fell for it. I guess I can be convincing when I want to be." Ayden's posture was rigid, anger was radiating out of her as she added the next part. "She had no idea who I was either," Ayden continued. "I shouldn't have been surprised that you didn't tell your family about me, especially since how things ended between us." Wow... Confronting him after so many years... She didn't know really what she was going to say to him. It was different than the many different ways she imagined it over the years. She would just have to roll with it. She did know that she wanted him to hear her and acknowledge how much he hurt her. She wanted him to know how hard it was for her since he left her. How the act of doing so ruined her life and shut her out of her son's. It was all his fault. If he had stayed, things would have been different. But he didn't. He was a coward and took the easy way out while she suffered. And she hated him for that. |

REX YANGTREE Rex studied her face, wondering if she was lying, or deceived. It seemed the latter. "Cleo knew who you were. Are." "She was the only one. Fact is she was the deciding factor in my leaving. The situation being what it was. Your father had made it plain through intermediaries that my career was finished. Not that being a stooge in the military industrial bureaucracy was all that intriguing." Ayden knew well how he was unhappy in the post-war environs of the Alliance Military. And when she'd aborted their child, left tucked away by her family from her inappropriate suitor. HIM. There wasn't any reason to stay. Old rich military families and those lower class military traditional families that had provided the grunts that served under them. They were not meant to mix. The message had been quite clear. 'don't try to reach her,' He didn't fear for himself, but his family. Pursuing Ayden through hell, he'd have done it. But she didn't want to be pursued. Didn't want him. A childish mistake was what he was. What he'd been told, convinced of. "So you left 'father', good for you." "But why here? Why now?" It made no sense. Was there something else afoot? This was looking more and more like some dark manipulation which he could not make heads or tails out. Military brat, father a high ranking military government official, tracked him down now that he was working against the Alliance? He began to smell a stench. |

Ayden watched him as he spoke. He was studying her. Maybe trying to figure out if she would call him out on his actions. "Cleo knew who you were. Are." So Cleo knew? Ayden's brow knitted together in confusion. Why would she have pointed her in his direction? She had basically told her exactly where her brother was. "She was the only one. Fact is she was the deciding factor in my leaving. The situation being what it was. Your father had made it plain through intermediaries that my career was finished. Not that being a stooge in the military industrial bureaucracy was all that intriguing." Ayden snorted at that one and turned around, her fists at her sides, clenching and unclenching. But the fact that Cleo had told her where he was? Why? Did she want Rex to admit his cowardice? Own up to his responsibilities? Of course she knew he was unhappy. Her father probably made him feel that way. Especially after he left her pregnant and alone. Like who could ever trust a soldier to fight when they weren't able to deal with knocking up his girlfriend. It was a matter of honor. "So you left 'father', good for you." "But why here? Why now?" "Why now? I didn't sever ties with him recently. He cut me out years ago," she revealed as she turned around to face him, her eyes afire with anger. "As for your career? Of course he pushed you out of the military. You had no honor. You were a coward away from the fighting. Who could trust you when things got tough in the field." She took a step forward, just wanting to deck him. "Cleo must have known what happened or else she wouldn't have told me where you were. Did she want you to own up to what you did?" Oh this should be good. She couldn't wait for his response. Would be dodge taking responsibility? Or would he finally admit he let her and their son down? |

"Own up to what I did?" he thought back to those horrible furious days. "She orchestrated it, talked to you family; found out about... your... termination ... of our child. That you had chosen to put your family first, that I was to go away so that there would be peace, heh, peace between our families." He had turned away, looked at the embarrassing display of guns and memorabilia on the wall. "I wasn't going to, I looked, but you were gone. If I'd looked more, there would have been repercussions." His legs felt weak. "I wish I burned the planet down." He turned back to look at her. Shamed, "But I didn't." |

That was when the whole conversation went pear shaped. Well, maybe not pear shaped, but certainly warped and almost unbelievable. "Own up to what I did?" Ayden almost thought he was about to deny everything, but the look on his face was almost painful. Her brow knitted together a bit. A niggling in the back of her mind was telling her that something was not right here. "She orchestrated it, talked to you family; found out about... your... termination ... of our child. That you had chosen to put your family first, that I was to go away so that there would be peace, heh, peace between our families." He had turned away just a split second before Ayden's jaw hit the floor. Oh... My... God...she thought. "I wasn't going to, I looked, but you were gone. If I'd looked more, there would have been repercussions." His voice... He sounded pained... Everything started to fall into place somewhat. She had thought it strange that he just up and left without saying a word to her directly. That was not the person she had spent her time with. That was not the person she had fallen in love with. This man in front of her? This was the Rex she knew. They both had been lied to. And she was sure that her father had a large hand in the whole thing. And he had looked for her just as she had done him, but her father had whisked her away to Bellerophon so quickly. As her mind raced through what she know knew, she slowly pulled the battered picture of her... no their son that she carried on her person nearly every minute of every day. She had other pictures and even a capture or two, but this was the one she didn't allow to leave her person. "I wish I burned the planet down." "But I didn't." She was overcome. She came here to make him pay, but they both had been paying this whole time. She just didn't know is Cleopatra was in on the whole scheme. A tear slid down her face. "I looked for you too. Father sent me to Bellerophon right away and when I waved you to tell you where I was, I spoke to one of your friends, Tamerlane Nassur. He told me that you had resigned and left the military. He said he was shocked by your behavior and cowardice. He told me that in confidence, you admitted that you were cutting ties and that I was a mistake and you never truly thought us to be serious. I didn't even know where to look for you after that. You had just vanished into thin air," she revealed to him. I occurred to her that he had truly loved her. She wiped the tear away as another one came. "We were lied to." She held up the picture so that Rex could see their son clearly. "This is Brandon... Our son." Edited by abbey, Jan 11 2015, 06:49 AM.

Ayden provided the most bizarre, implausible, and impossible explanation that Rex could have imagined. But it rang true. His guts wanted to let go. "We were lied to." she said. 'no, it was not true. it could not be ' Yangtree leaned against the closed door, back against it, legs wanted to buckle. She held up the picture so that Rex could see their son clearly. "This is Brandon... Our son." "no." he said quietly as the took the picture from her. But it was without sincerity. He knew it was true. Rex tried to move toward her, his feet shuffled, the picture shook in his hand. He moved closer. "I didn't know." Why should she believe him? He never should have given up. He never had, not on anything. Ever. Except her. "I'm sorry." was all he could mumbled. Dishonor and shame deserved. His other hand tried to reach toward her, but he could only raise it a few inches.

Ayden watched him as Rex's gaze focused on the picture she held out to him. "no." He said it in such a whisper she almost missed it. She wondered what he meant by it. Was he sorry? Did he regret Brandon's existence? For some reason, she hoped that wasn't the case. Matter of fact, she didn't really know what she felt. This conversation was nothing like what she pictured it to be. Then he took the picture from her hands. Were his hands shaking? He also came a little closer to her. Ayden cocked her head, trying to get a read on him. Trying to figure out what was going through his head. "I didn't know." His tone was sincere. "I know that now. We were lied to, Rex," she told him. She had no idea why she believed him wholeheartedly. Some folks could use the I didn't know defense to try to extricate them out of the situation, but she knew him. The way he was acting? He definitely had no clue. "I am quite sure my Father had his hand in it all. He cut you out before Brandon was even born and then shoved me out as soon as he could too." God... He almost looked crushed. "I'm sorry." His movement was imperceptible, but somehow she instinctively reached out and took his hand into hers, even though it only raised a few inches. "It's not your fault. There was no way that you could have known what was going on. Hell... I didn't know either." She took her other hand and cupped his cheek. "Rex? Are you OK? You look like you're going to pass out." She was surprised about how good it felt to touch him. She was so incredibly angry before when all she knew were the lies that were fed her. But now? Now those angry feelings had evaporated into nothing. What she felt now? It was like going back into time. If only six years hadn't already taken place. Edited by abbey, Jan 14 2015, 02:44 PM.

"Rex? Are you OK? You look like you're going to pass out." Maybe he had been, could have. But all that she'd said. It lit a very short fuse. His eyes found hers, no, it couldn't really be true, that it had all been.... "A lie. All these years you thought.." and "and I've thought." Rex looked back at the picture. HIS SON. And they had, taken him. From him, and now it seems from her. His eyes took a dark and narrow look over Ayden's shoulder. A look she had only ever glimpsed perhaps once or twice when his anger had almost taken hold of him at some stupid event when one had given offense. This was darker. This was blood. He'd killed and butchered for less. For Purple. For money. His blood though. HIS SON. Yangtree took a deep breath and came to the present. The blood for blood would be later. For now, It was Ayden. She was back. No, not really back. Together. Not like before. They'd suffered for their indiscretions so long ago. Continuously. No longer. He gently pulled her closer with her hand that held his. "I've." He eyes couldn't lie, nor could he now. Surely she'd know somewhat of what he meant, "changed. A lot. I'm sure you have too. But, are you still," She was close now, she only needed to lean a bit closer and he'd just need to bend a little and would be able to kiss her. "Ayden?" "Are you still Ayden?" |

Ayden kept watch on him, waiting for him to answer if he was OK or not. Finally his eyes locked with hers and she could tell the reality of it all was dawning him. "A lie. All these years you thought.." "and I've thought." Ayden couldn't do anything but nod sadly. His eyes left hers again and he went back to Brandon's picture. That's when his eyes came back up and focused somewhere over her shoulder. That's when she saw something come over him. He was angry. He was beyond angry. She had seen a version of this before, one time that he had almost gotten into a fight at a bar they were at when a drunk comrade insulted her. She scooted back an inch, mainly because it was so dark that he was making her uncomfortable. But she wasn't scared of him. She knew he would never hurt her, even though they had been away from each other for so long. Then he took a deep breath and his mood lightened as he looked back at her. He seemed so intent in studying her now. Which also made her somewhat uncomfortable. No one had looked that close at her since the last time since her father allowed her to see Brandon and before that, it was the doctors in the Sanitarium who were scrutinizing her mental health. The only thing is that this one wasn't done in malice. She felt him pull her closer and she didn't resist. She didn't know why he did it, but there was a comfort that she felt from him being so near. Wasn't that funny? A few minutes ago, she would have gladly decked him, but now, things had all changed. They had come full circle. "I've." "changed. A lot. I'm sure you have too. But, are you still," She was sure that he had changed. It's been a while since they had parted. Rex was a soldier and he was good at it. With no war, she only could imagine what kind of work he did, especially based on what she heard in the meeting earlier. She also became suddenly aware how close she had come to him. She could smell his scent and it brought back memories. Good memories. If she just stood on her tippy toes, she could... "Ayden?" "Are you still Ayden?" She tilted her head at him and thought for a moment. She had changed too. What could she say about it? "I am still me, especially since we have cleared this all up on our end" she said with a smile. "But I have changed, as well. A little more independent. Way more cautious with my trust. And a healthy fear of doctors." She shrugged a little and clarified that last statement. "In order to discredit me, he told everyone that Brandon was my brother's child and when I objected, he had me thrown in a mental hospital. The only way to get out of there was to recant my argument and to leave." Her head dropped. She was shamed. "I should have tried harder, but he would have kept me there, all drugged up in a padded room all my own," she revealed. "But he offered me very limited visitation. Twice a year. Then it was once a year. Then he stopped accepting my calls. I think it was because he knew I was his mother. My mom... She sends me pictures and captures every once in a while. I am sure it is behind Father's back. She is so brave." She looked up at him and a tear slid down her face. "I am such a coward. But some day... I will go back and I will bring him back to me." When she said the last part. She had a fire in her eyes. The same one she had when she demanded her Father let her marry the man in front of her. It was confirmation that somewhere deep down. The true Ayden was there. |

"not some day." Rex said with a certainty that was unshakable. "We start now on getting our son." He wiped her tear with the edge of his son. Yangtree wanted to take her in his arms, kiss her, make love to her. But if that was to be, it should not be now. They needed comfort. A part of him long disappeared resurfaced and he simply pulled her close and held her in his arms. "no more punishing ourselves over what we could have done, what we could have done which would have likely ended in failure and more people suffering. I'd like to think that's why our supposed friends acted as they did. To protect us from ourselves." Rex did not fully, if even partly, believed that. It was meant as comfort for himself as much as Ayden. But then, it would have been nasty. What he'd have done if he'd known the truth. Failure would not have been an option. Any failure would have resulted in another attempt. Blood would have become an option. "I'd like to see the other pictures you have." One hand held her lovingly close, the other softly stroked her back. "Then we'll do this job we've hired on for, while we learn what we can." A long slow deep breath. It had been a long time he had something to live for instead of die for. "And then let some god have mercy on those that would get in our way." |

Ayden was a little shocked at what Rex said next. She never really expected such a visceral response. But truly, down deep, she knew that he would feel that way. It didn't take long for her to realize that. "not some day." "We start now on getting our son." Yes! Yes! Yes! she thought. This is the way it should have been. Then he gently wiped away her tear and she couldn't help but give him a small smile. "no more punishing ourselves over what we could have done, what we could have done which would have likely ended in failure and more people suffering. I'd like to think that's why our supposed friends acted as they did. To protect us from ourselves." Ayden snorted at that one, but didn't say anything else. His rationalization didn't set true with her and based on the lack of conviction in his voice, he didn't quite believe what he was saying either. "Yes, the past is just that. We were lied to and never given the chance before. Now is different. Now we will be in a position to do something about it." She also felt how close he was to her. Especially to the one stroking her back. It felt good. "I'd like to see the other pictures you have." "Then we'll do this job we've hired on for, while we learn what we can." "Of course," she agreed. After all, they would need the coin. They would probably need a lot of coin. She could tell him all she could about Brandon, but that was only what she had been told by her mother. She wondered if her mother could be trusted. Could she be an ally in getting their son back. She would have to try to suss that out a bit. Maybe Rex could help her determine was would be safe. She stopped thinking when she heard him draw in a deep breath. She was getting ready to pull away from him to go get what little she had of her son's, but his next words stopped her in her tracks. "And then let some god have mercy on those that would get in our way." Her heart soared. She knew right then that she was going to get her son back. The boy's father had just signed on for the long run. They were going to go get him. A certain amount of peace infused her, but it was nothing like the burn that also flooded her being. This was the man she loved. She realized in that moment that even when she was so angry at him before, she always loved him. She had never stopped, so she couldn't help but stand on her tiptoes and kiss him full on the mouth with unbridled passion. It was the entirely wrong thing to do, but it felt so right. So she managed to pull away after a few moments. "I'm sorry... I don't know what I... I'm sorry," was all she could say as her hand fell on his chest. |

REX YANGTREE "Don't be sorry love." He had returned the kiss, but she'd pulled away; which seemed to make sense. They'd been apart so long and his emotions were flailing wildly in all directions. He led her to the bed, reached for a bottle of scotch from his bag and guided them to a sitting position. "Pictures Ayden, there'll be time enough for us. I want to think and hear about him now." He took a small sip from the bottle and offered it to her. |

Ayden really had no idea why she had stopped kissing him. Rex was as delicious as she remembered him to be and he had reciprocated. It had also felt like she had come home. But she had stopped, most likely because he had asked for more information about Brandon. "Don't be sorry love." She nodded as they went to sit on the bed. God... She felt so scattered and so jumbled up. She was at first so, so angry and now things had made a complete 180. It was like she had been returned back to that time when she and Rex had been together but at the same time, so many years later. It was dizzying. "Pictures Ayden, there'll be time enough for us. I want to think and hear about him now." As she sat down next to him, he took a small sip from a bottle and held it out to her. She grabbed it and gulped a decent sized draw. Then she pulled her gear towards her and took out a small box that held her most precious belongings. "It's not much, but it is all I have," she explains as she began to lay out all the pictures she had. "His name is Brandon David Richter. My father insisted his middle name be after my brother. I didn't know his grand plan at the time, I just thought it was a good memorial for David." She chuckled a little. "Guess we will have to get his name changed to Yangtree once we get him back," she pointed to one of the more recent one and looked at it with an expression of pure unadulterated love and pride. "This is him on his 5th birthday, just a couple of months ago. I bet it just kills my father that he looks so much like you did at that age. I mean, you can see some of me in him, but he is most definitely your son." She handed it to him. "You keep it," she told him. "I already have one I keep in my pocket. You should have one too." She spoke to him then about everything she could tell him. How he was in school, the things that he liked, his favorite foods, his favorite stuffed animal. She showed him the captures she had of him crawling and walking the first time, his first birthday, his third Christmas and lastly his first day of school. "That's just about all I have," she said sadly. "I wish I had more, but most of this later stuff was sent to me by mother. I am sure my father has no idea that she's done it. My most valuable thing I have though is this." She showed him a picture that a child had obviously drawn. It has two stick figures, both smiling. One had the words "Mom" above it with an apron on and the other said "Me." With it was a heart and the words "I Love You." "He drew this for me," she said, a tear streaming down her face. "He knows that I am his Mom. She makes sure he doesn't forget." Then she looked at the figure in the background. It was most definitely a soldier and he wore a smile as well. A small arrow pointed to it with the two letters "RY" by it. Ayden's eyes widened. "Oh my God!" she exclaimed. "I always thought this was a picture of Ryan, one of my father's guards. But it isn't!" She looked into Rex's face. "It's you. She's told him about you!" That was when she heard the pop and bang of some kind of mechanics echoing through the ship. She looked up as she listened intently. "What was that? she asked. OOC: Tojo, I was figuring we should get them back into the main story soon, since it sounds like we will be disembarking shortly. But we can continue longer if need be. Your choice. |

"Docking." Rex took another small sip from the bottle, as much as he wanted to tie on a nice healthy bit of drinking and slink into sleep in Ayden's arm, his military clock had ticked away. The job was close at hand. "Time to go to work." He kissed her again, a minute of tenderness and passion that could not yet be consummated. Turmoil then as he prepared. Ayden and he would like be in danger, or arrest. He went over the plan with her, almost dispassionately yet there was more of a concern than he could ever remember. Fear that one of them wouldn't survive. They was something more important now. Not them. Their son. Just before they left their cabin he placed his hand on the side of her shoulders. "you may have to be cold, do something you would never have dreamed of. Do it. For it for Brandon, and don't hesitate. Then there was another kiss and they exited the cabin. As they did Rex Yangtree was a soldier again, geared up with armor and weapons ready to storm the station and bring back he away team. no, to bring back Ayden. |

Of course, Rex knew exactly what was going on. "Docking." Rex took another sip before she took the bottle and got one too. "Time to go to work." Then he kissed her again and even though it was short, she could feel the burn of desire. Knowing that this was anew thing for her, being on a not-so-legal side of things, he explained the plan again. She hoped she got it right. They both got ready in a companionable silence, her thinking about the job and Rex thinking on whatever he was. She wondered if he was OK. He seemed to be thrown by the revelations that he learned, but she knew his waters ran deep and what you saw might just be the tip of the iceberg. Right before they were ready to leave the cabin, he placed his hands on her shoulders and spoke to her. "you may have to be cold, do something you would never have dreamed of. Do it. For it for Brandon, and don't hesitate." She nodded to him, feeling a little more than scared at that point. That fear was wiped away with another kiss from him. She followed him as they exited their bunk. She watched him walk, his gait incredibly sexy, especially when he was loaded to bear with weapons. Man... A dress uniform had nothing on the attraction she felt for him when he was like this. And by his demeanor, she knew that if he took this job as serious as he was, then there would be nothing stopping them when they were able to go get their son back. |
