Suddenly, through the ship ripped the sound of the tackle and the crack of the revolver. Sam perked up immediately, standing up and listening closely. She quickly got up, and darted towards the sound, taking the weapon from her holster, and holding it out in front of her.

Whatever was happening, it was something dangerous, and she had to protect herself. In that moment, she was happy that Nick had forced the gun into her hands. Sam took the stairs down to the cargohold, keeping her weapon raised as she took in the situation at hand. Nick was on the floor, bleeding. Guild was there, wait, why wasn't he in his quarters?

Nick had a gun in his hand. Well then, that explained that. Sam was trying her very hardest not to get confused, and not to jump to conclusions. Sam appoached closer, down the last step so that she was on the same floor as Nick and Guild. "What the hell is going on?"

Monte stood in the stateroom with Africa. He shook his head in confusion.

"This robot thing. What do you think it means? Is it possible someone slipped it in while we were loading? I'm sure I had a clear view of everything coming on board. My job, you know. Security. If someone could get a crate that size on board, who knows what else could have been stashed. We could be sitting on a bomb. Intruders. It just doesnt make sense to me."

He was obviously struggling with the situation, and looking for Africa to convince him he hadn't made some grave mistake.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

It was a puzzlement.

And there was no explanation. "Trust your instincts Monte." She moved next to him, slipped an arm around his arm. "A robot, and unmanifested crate? The Captain does not seem to know. How could the crate have come on board unless those that brought the cargo brought it with those on the manifest?"

She was refreshed after her meditation and martial forms. Some romantic notions in bed had been her interest, but Monte was right. They needed to be proactive and make themselves of value.

Then the sound of gunshots rang out. Africa cocked her head, the sounds and echoes told her.

"Cargo Bay." and she led the rush out their stateroom.

Monte reacted to the crash and gunfire, but twisting the shotgun off his shoulder, checking the loads in the double chamber. "I have taser rounds in one chamber, and solid shot in the other. IF this is the robot, I think the tasers will cause some reaction."

He followed her out into the cargo bay, arriving last, and with the heavy shotgun up and braced on his shoulder. He took a bead on the synthetic. but held his shot for fear of hitting Nick.

CRACK

CRACK CRACK CRACK

The revolver in the Captains hand recoiled, though instinct kept its aim true, and bullets flew across the small gap that was the
Valorous' cargo bay. Despite the close quarters, though, Guild was already moving on him when the weapon went off.

The very quiet, almost non-existant hissing of hydraulics echoed between the shots as the synthetic launched up into the air, almost half a dozen feet and seemingly without any effort at all. The action was abnormal - inhuman - and two of the Captain's shots flew by underneath the diving cyborg.

The second two shots, however, found their target.

Guild had been moments away from crashing into Nick again when the bullets hit - one taking him in the chest, the second making its home in his left cheek. The force of the two impacts knocked him from the air, away from the Captain, and he hit the metal flooring with a thud just as Sam arrived on the scene. Monte and Africa entered only a second after her.

There was no blood, no cry of pain. Just the heavy thud and a quick, eloquent scrambling from Guild to regain his footing.
Sam Hunter

Sam approached closer, down the last step so that she was on the same floor as Nick and Guild. "What the hell is going on?"
Guild had already regained his feet, eerily shaking off the wounds he had sustained, and had taken one rushed step toward Nick before he halted at the question. His expressionless face and wide, glassy eyes turned to Sam. Somewhere inside, a program was calculating something.

Split seconds later, he made a decision.

"It should have been you, Captain." He spoke to Nick, but kept his gaze firmly on the Captain's sister. Then he lunged for her, fast as light, arms outstretched with a casual, deadly intent that no human could replicate.

Astonished that shooting the robot had an effect, Nick ran down the compartment toward the airlock, thinking he could trap him, or something. His mind was moving too quickly. He heard footsteps. Sam looked down from the metal staircase.

Nick didn't have time to react to Sam's question. Nick needed something more hearty. More effective. As Guild lie there for a moment, Nick slid into to the open inner airlock door. The rivet gun was still sitting atop the crates. He grabbed it, checked it was still loaded and slipped back out. He slipped it behind his back. The robot got to his feet, and shook off the wounds. Guild was standing now, recovered from his wounds, staring at Sam for asking the question. Processing almost.

He lunged for Sam, and Nick was too far down the cargo bay to stop it. Nick ran towards them the robot atop his sister, and placed the rivet gun on the back of it's head.

He hoped for just a moment that the robot's inner flesh was as soft as a human.
"Yeah, well, it always was," he said through gritted teeth, and pulled the trigger.

Monte saw the synthetic roll over Nick, and then turn on Sam, at the foot of the stairwell. He didn't hesitate this time, but with a flip of the selector on his shotgun, fired two lethal darts at the robot. 50,ooo volts times two would rip through whatever skin layer it had, sending pulses of electronic scrambling energy through its form. He then switched the selector over to the even more legal solid shot and fired a third time, aiming at the creature's head from a meter away.

Sam watched, her eyes wide as the captain snuck into the airlock and grabbed the rivet gun. She was shocked by his quickness, he never moved that fast! But Guild was getting back up. He wasn't dead. That was the thing, you couldn't exactly just shoot a robot and think it would 'kill' them. You'd have to find their motherboard, or at least their 'brain'. Whether or not that was where Nick was shooting, Sam didn't know. But, when Guild stood up it was clear that he hadn't struck in the right place.

They all stood there for a moment, staring at each other, until Guild turned to look at her, while talking to Nick. sweat ran down her spine as a type of precursing feeling. Whatever was about to go down was not going to be good. And she could guess it would be targetted at her.

Guild leapt at her, and she shrieked, not really knowing what to do as he landed on top of her. Sam's weapon clattered out of her hand, meanwhile Nick appeared right behind Guild with a rivet gun to his head. The trigger was pulled, and Sam pushed against Guild's chest with two open hands. This was not okay. She wanted to be as far away from this, this, thing, as soon as possible.

It all happened so quickly, though through the eyes of the machine time seemed to slow. He processed the odds of Nick reaching him on time, and the odds of Monte's weapon slowing him down. Neither were high, and so the plan remained. He'd been taught programmed that, on a job like this, emotion was the greatest weakness in a tight crew such as this one. If he could take out the girl, the Captain would break..

Guild hadn't counted on the rivet gun, nor had he known that Monte's weapon had alternative ammunition. Both of these facts cost him the fight.

He reached Sam first, full body weight smashing into her and throwing her to the ground. Her head hit hard metal and a surprisingly strong fist, like metal itself, slammed into her check before his open palm went for his neck. He only needed a few seconds, a quick twist. Nothing to it.

Before his synthetic, warm fingers managed to find Sam's throat, Nick was upon them. The rivet guns hydraulics punched a narrow bolt of steel straight through the creatures head, the tip exploding out a few inches, glistening in the light only a foot away from Sam. Almost simultaneously Monte's weapon went off - two small buds, each pumping electricity into Guild from the two holes they'd torn into him. There was no sound, like in the fancy movies, but the effects showed.

Guild jumped back, knocking Nick to the ground as he did, and stumbled away a few feet. The nail in his coffin was the third shot from Monte which knocked him down to the flooring in a heap. The cyborgs face showed what could only be described as a seizures of the muscles - his lips twitched, nose wrinkled, eyes opened and shut inconsistently. Finally, all movement ceased, and the cargo bay fell silent.

The entire ordeal had only lasted 20 seconds or so.

Nick lay there, panting. His breath catching up with him. The rivet gun still in his hand, humming, ready to fire another bolt. He switched it off. Sam was laying there, she looked alright. He'd check her in a minute. He looked up at Monte.

"Excellent Timing. Nice work." He slowly moved to a standing position. Everything hurt. He walked down the cargo bay to where Guild's motionless frame lay. Grabbing him under the arms, like a wounded comrade, Nick dragged him back through the gap in the inner airlock doors and closed the hatch. He vented the outer chamber from the panel, flushing him into space, and then closed the outer airlock.

He crossed the cargo bay again to his sister and crouched down.

"Y'alright?"

Monte relaxed, cleared the chamber on his shotgun and slung it. As Nick tossed the robot out the airlock, he smiled and nodded. Glancing over at Africa, he grinned even larger.

"Knew there was something queer about that thing. Glad to see it gone."

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

Africa raced toward the robot, taking a slight arc at her charge so that Monte would have a clear shot. She had almost reached the machine as it seemed to be shut down from damage.

She moved to Samantha as Nick dispatched the robot. The Engineer seemed ok.
A look to Monte then he spoke. He had that big galoot lovable smile on his face.

"Me too." she said. Then a look at the mysterious crate.
"one queer thing down, one to go?"

Sam was slammed back as her head met the floor with a thud before a metal fist collided with her cheek. She cried out in pain for only a minute before Guild was destroyed in front of her own eyes. A rivet pierced through him, only a foot from herself, as she gulped down air. He almost killed her. He was so close to killing her, and yet, by luck itself, she was alive.

Nick heaved the robot off and tossed him out the airlock, meanwhile, Sam just sat there, heaving in deep breaths. She had blood in her mouth, probably from biting her cheek during the ordeal, and her entire back felt bruised. "I, um, yeah," she said in response to Nick who had come close to her. She wrapped arms around his neck and held him close for only a few seconds, before using him to stand up.

It was clear that she was still visually shaken from the whole ordeal. "Yeah. I think I'm okay,"

"Okay, okay, that's enough with the feelings." Nick said as his sister released. He tugged his shirt down.

"Go lay down for a while, and when you wake up, remember that we're mean nasty space pirates and your brother doesn't like affection."

She moved toward the door. He put his hands on his waist and called to her.

"...I mean, don't nap too long, because the thruster manifolds need a purge, so, you know. Like maybe a fast nap, and then you could start on the ODN lines on the shuttle. Just...uh a suggestion," he said, visibly uncomfortable.

Sam smiled as her brother pulled away, clearly uncomfortable with the fact that she gave him a hug. It wasn't like some robot just tried to kill her or anything, but he had to remember, Nick wasn't used to hugs and little sisters around to bug him. Good thing she was around, right?

Sam went towards the door and near Monte and Africa. "Thanks, you two, for helping me out back there. I think we've got a really good crew with us," she joked with a smile. "Anyways. I'll probably scrounge up some dinner in an hour or two. If you guys want, you're more than welcome to join me. I can't promise any five-star meal, but a little variation on the rations might be on the menu," Sam said with a smile.

When she heard the answer, she nodded, and then walked off, towards her cabin where she could attempt to put what had just happened behind her and try to shake it off. And, if she couldn't get to sleep, a little calligraphy could help get her mind off things.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

Africa, "Captain, I can purge the manifolds, though I dont know anything about ODN lines"
She was eager to demonstrate some usefulness, though still wary in his trust of her..

It might be a hard thing given that his engineer was his sister. Letting a still relative stranger work on his ship (at least unsupervisd) - she probably didn't have that level or trust.

Nick was still breathing heavy from the struggle of life and death and dragging the robot to the airlock. Africa spoke. He noticed her again, she was lovely, but shook it off from his mind. No time for that now.

"That's mighty nice of you to offer. Check with my sister on that, I know she started the project, so she can advise and decide what's best. She's good at that."

He wheezed a bit and walked past her towards the staircase, and pulled himself up it with his arms, and limped to his cabin at the fore of the ship. Gorramit was he out of shape.

With the airlock cleansed, Valorous was quiet and at peace again. No more murderous crew members, no more gunshots, no more mysterious radar blips.

For now.

Later...

Over a week passed by with life as usual on board the small transport. After the drama of the first leg of their trip was over, the journey came easy and - to be honest - boring. The day to day tedium of space travel soon set in, and the four crew members started to get to know one another a little better.

The ship's lighting and atmospheric cycle had gradually shifted to that of Ariel during the voyage, thus the daily routine of the Valorous
crew had synchronized with life planet side on Ariel by the time they arrived.

It was 'morning' as Ariel came into sight and its crew had to start going about landing procedures. They'd be on solid ground in 70 minutes if all went to plan.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

There was nothing boring about the flight to Africa.

Monte was there, talking and making love;
Samantha was showing her the ropes of Valorous engineering (and hopefully she was getting the trust of the Captain and First Mate);
and, having noticed it during the fight with the robot, Africa had talked to the Captain about his slightly out of shape stature.

And so Africa had begun some training, a combination of yoga, pilates, and tai chi. It was strenuous, stretching, balance, and strength. Only after a week of daily practice was she now introducing more speed and dexterity.
It was the seed of a fighting style (among others) she had practiced for thirty years.

...
As the ship approached Ariel, Africa stood by for any orders.

This past week had been quite the week. In the beginning, especially after the whole Guild thing, Sam had had more than just a little trouble falling asleep at night. After a few hours of staring at her ceiling, she decided to get up and go fool around in the engine room. There were always a few things to do. And, after a few hours of work, Sam found herself asleep next to the engine with a blanket wrapped around her, lulled by the sound of the engine spinning.

Needless to say, the captain didn't seem happy about finding her asleep next to the engine well after breakfast. For the next few nights, she'd set up an additional hammock in the engine room off to the side. It was a perfect place to sleep for when she couldn't. For the first few days, Sam was quiet, and pretty much kept to herself. However, after those few antisocial days, Sam started to hang out with Africa, looking to show her around the engine, so that Sam would be able to have an extra set of hands. In fact, Africa had even started to help Sam with different balancing and self defense moves. It was kind of awesome. It was like having an older sister around who actually wanted to teach her new skills.

Monte meanwhile was a little different. Sam tried to find some stuff in common with him, but she had a few difficulties. They just hadn't talked enough. Maybe after a few more dinners, she'd be able to learn more about him, and maybe then she could begin a good friendship. For now, though, Sam was more than ready to get off the ship. Ariel was an exciting place. She couldn't wait. Even if it was only a delivery.

"Morning Africa," Sam said, coming closer to her. She was dressed in her sweatshirt and jeans, her hair tied into two loose braids. "Tea?" She said. In her hand, she had two mugs of the stuff, one she lifted to her own lips to take a sip of, holding the other out to the older woman.

Monte enjoyed the time he spent with Africa. It helped to relieve some of the stress from fighting the robot. Damn Gorram Machine! It darn near rutted them. But laying in her arms, feeling her breath against his chest, all felt better.

And then there was Sam. She was curious enough; some engineer prodigy type. He respected that. Africa was spending time helping Nick get some physical training in. Fighting skill. Monte knew from his own sparring with her that she could teach a man a few things. A deep grin crossed his face, and a chuckle broke free.

Sitting down with Sam, he pulled the coffee mug close and took a deep draught. "I do have a few skills in electronics, if you need any help along that line. Other than that, I've always been curious about Earth-That-Was and the artifacts that were brought along on the Arcs. Kind of an amateur archaeologist. Not affiliated with any University or anything. Just a personal curiosity."
