Monte watched alongside Nick as the crate was opened and Sam reveled it to be an android/cyborg. He noticed Africa's concerned glance in his direction, and he shrugged.

"Well, it's not a paying passenger, is it cargo? or a stowaway? Either way, Captain, up to you as to its disposition."

He had heard of such things, but never had run into them before. Stories from Earth-That-Was talked about the rise of the machine; the Three Laws and all that. He wasn't sure how much was fiction and what was reality. Best to be safe than sorry.

"Am I on Exodus? Has the evacuation on Earth commenced?"

In the moment, Nick's world stopped. In a moment, be became more cognizant of his physical being, his speck in the universe than ever before. He could feel the oxygen moving in the bulkhead around him, he could feel the blood coursing through the rootlike veins in his body. He could feel his capillaries ticking. He could feel everything. This was big.

This thing was from Earth-that-was. This thing had been around in the old times. It had known the way things once were. This was a relic, an artifact, something hundreds of years old. This needed to be handled delicately. If this sentinel thought it was hundreds of years ago, it needed to be corrected, but how, and how gently. It also might be valuable, something of that age might be of significant value to one of the Core World museums, or to a high-end core collector. Fencing it might be a problem. Regardless, he needed everyone to be on the same page. He looked around at his crew.

"Sam, Africa, let's head upstairs, I have a few things to discuss with you. I'll meet you in the kitchen."

He turned to Monte.

"Monte, would you mind waiting down here with Guild? I'll fill you in when we get back."

He crouched down to the box in which the robot sat and made eye contact.

"One of my crew will standby to keep you company, we need to go discuss a few things upstairs. We'll be right back and we'll explain everything in a few minutes. I'm Nick, the Captain," he said, deliberately not specifying that he was captain of what ship. For a moment he hesitated, but reached his hand out, hoping the robot knew how to shake hands.

Guild responded to Nick and shook his hand with a firm grip. He had been programmed to conduct himself with a somewhat human personality as to not alarm the general populace. The first models did not go over well with the lack of humanity they displayed. It scared a lot of people before they were programmed to breathe and blink even though they didn't have to. "Captain." Guild nodded and watched them depart as he looked at Monte and studied him.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

As soon as they were well away from their discovery, and Africa made sure it was well away given it might have enhanced perceptive senses. She almost spoke but then waited. The Captain wanted to discuss in the kitchen. When they arrived Africa turned on a fan over the stove and a wave channel on the com. Hard core titanium rock blared.

Her head bobbed a couple of times, it was a song she had heard before.
Despite that involuntary moment, she was on task.

"Scan indicated a robot core, cybernetic parts with... " this wasn't something she had heard of. Sure there were robots that looked like humans, but actual flesh. "flesh, real flesh for the skin and exterior. And made it match up to 98.6 degrees. That's a lot of effort to make something appear human that definitely isn't."

"I could check the histories, see if it's telling the truth, or ... reporting accurately. Telling the truth would be a human attribute."

In the kitchen, Nick flexed his fingers. He'd just shaken hands, and well, with a robot. It felt strange. He paced once around the kitchen, and didn't sit down. He nodded at Africa as she created some white noise, a good idea. He stood at the head of the wooden table and leaned on the chair, a rocker, noting once more the disorganized collected set of chairs crowded around the kitchen.

"That's probably a good idea. I don't know how much you'll be able to dig up, but it'd be best to take a look. In the meantime, we need a strategy for telling him the truth. We'll need evidence, something to prove this isn't the Exodus, and we're several hundred years in the future." He stood upright and put his hand on his mouth.

"I think it's best we tell him, though," he said. "We probably should be honest, explain the difference, but we'll need some proof. We also should probably make some arrangements, he's with us until Ariel at the least."

He straightened up, and stretched his back. He needed sleep, he'd been up for a while.

"Alright. Africa, you dig up some information, try and verify the story, bring me whatever you find. Sam, your job is a little more complicated." He leaned forward to his sister.

"First, head into bunk five, and remove the cortex access and all the computer terminals from the room. Then, head downstairs, ask him what his needs are and offer him bunk five, a room in which to stay while we sort out what happened. Avoid answering any questions about what year it is, or that this isn't the Exodus. Suggest he power down, while we figure out what happened. In the meantime, Africa will bring me some information, and we'll go from there."

He stood up, and looked around.

"Alright, let's go."

He turned and headed through the mess, past the bunks, the infirmary and opened the door to his quarters. Closing the door behind him, he crossed the space, to where the hull narrowed, his bed under the slanted windows in the ceiling. He flopped down on his bed and pulled the drapes that hung to the sides, staring up through the glass ceiling at the passing stars. This was certainly something.

Monte stood back while the "robot" stepped through the hatch from the airlock, and the others left for conference.

"So, you were part of the Exodus? What's the last thing you remember from Earth? I happen to be a bit of a connoisseur of Earth things. Where were you constructed? Who was in charge? "

Monte tried to be conversational about it, but his curiosity was peeked. Being a history nut and fond of all the old trappings from the Exodus, having something from hundreds of years ago that could actually talk about then... this was indeed fascinating.

Guild blinked a few times and stared at Monte.

"This was my first activation. I am to be activated once the evacuation of Earth was commenced. I was designated as crew of the Exodus. My mission was to maintain and operate the Ark with other Sentinels during the 150 year trek. I was constructed at Bio-Tech Corporation which was located in New Jefferson, United States. Please clarify as to in charge? Doctor Janus Magnusson was in charge of Bio-Tech. Do you have a futher query as to who was in charge?"

Africa only added, "Remember Captain, it is a robot. It's programming we're dealing with, not human emotions. It might be a good idea for you to claim this title of 'master' before some sub-routine kicks in as a result of its operating parameters not being immediately met after activation."

There had been plenty of discussion in one of the classes at the nunnery where she had lived at one time. 'Artificial intelligence' did not and would not ever equal humanity, much less a soul. While a computer could mimic human responses, it would never be human. Chamberlain did not quite understand why the Captain and Samantha were already partially dealing with this machine as humanoid.

On the bridge Africa started her searches. There was plenty of history to go through, she started in general information on the specifics of what 'Guild' has stated: Bio-Tech and his Model number. Synthetic Sentinels, Exodus; and the good name of the doctor [once provided by Monte ;-) ].

Her initial goals were to verify the history and then to find out about the specific model and series of the Android, specifically on its operating programming. It wasn't her field, not even close, but she figured she would understand any danger from the performance parameters. The term Sentinel did not sit well, this sounded like something that might have a military defensive programming aspect.

Africa performed a cortex search as the computer lit up with information.

//QUERY - BIO-TECH CORPORATION: Formed in the year 2100 by Dr. Janus Magnusson. Dr. Magnusson was the first to be able to merge both cybernetics and synthetic human DNA to create the Syntheic Sentinel, a Cybernetic Humanoid. BIO-TECH was contracted by the United States Military in order to supply Synthetic Sentinels to operate the ARK. BIO-TECH was later bought out by Blue Sun Corp after it's funding was pulled due to problems with the Sentinel Units. However shortly after the purchase, the Allied government outlawed any machines that resembled Humans resulting in Blue Sun shelving the BIO-TECH unit indefinitely.

//QUERY - SYNTHETIC SENTINEL: A cybernetic humanoid created by Dr. Janus Magnusson of BIO-TECH Corp. The model was named Sentinel because they were "ALWAYS ON WATCH." It was designed with the sole purpose of repair and operation of the ARK on it's long Journey to new worlds. It was the first humanoid machine that was able to operate on it's own independently. During the Journey on the ARK several of the Sentinel units started exhibiting bizarre behavior outside of their programming such as <<ENTRY DELETED>> it is worth noting that earlier Sentinel Models were modified later on to exhibit breathing and blinking functions as most of the public psychologically had a hard time coping with lifeless looking human like machines. The added physical functions, although not needed assisted with integrating the Sentinels more into the average every day life. Sentinels have also been known to have the ability to <<ENTRY DELETED>> Funding was pulled and all Sentinels units were destroyed due to the above issues. All research was turned over to Blue Sun Corp in the buy out deal. The Allied Government has outlawed any cybernetic humanoids as a result of what had occurred.

//QUERY - JANUS MAGNUSSON: Reknown scientist and doctor known for his founding of BIO-TECH Corp and his creation of the Synthetic Sentinels. MORE INFO? Y/N?

//QUERY - EXODUS: The ARK also known as Exodus was a space vessel that was created by the Allied Governments in the year 2115. It was created to house over 100,000 people and to carry their decendants to worlds that were several hundred years away. Exodus was humanity's last chance of survival as the earth and all it's resources were used up and the planet was quickly dying. The ship is currently located on Bernadette in New Paris and is a popular tourist attraction. Do you wish to see plans of the ship? Y/N?

Nick had asked her to join him in the kitchen and she followed, listening to her orders and for the first time, what the captain said made sense. She knew she couldn't just lock all of the cortex panels, he'd for sure be able to hack it. So, she decided that she got to have some fun. Sam ran by the engine room grabbing her toolbox. It was a classic toolbox, screw drivers and hammers, and nails, the pure basics.

She then went to the room, and first, took a swing at the cortex panel with the hammer, breaking the screen. She then reached in and started undoing the screws avoiding the sparks. The whole process of taking out all of the electrical besides the light, was taking a bit of time which meant that Guild was probably being kept busy. Sam snipped all of the wires, and completely destroying where the cortex panel once was. All that was left was a hole, which she would have patched up, but when she glanced at her watch, she realized just how much time had passed.

Sam closed the door behind her, tossing the ruined comm unit into her toolbox and ran it back to the engine room. She then wet back to the cargo hold, and went up to guild. "Hey Guild, look. Um. While we sort some stuff out, I'm going to show you to your room. You might also want to power down when we get there, just because it may be a little while." She then smiled. People, or... Robots, tended to trust others when they smiled. "Come on. I'll show you," she said, extending a hand. If she got to hold his hand then she could make sure that he didn't run off or see anything that wasn't okay for him to see.

Guild stood up straight with the assistance of Sam, however he released his grip on her hand once he was fully upright. "Lead on Master." He turned to follow her. "You must understand that I do not power down.. Once i am activated my core battery has been known to last over 200 years."

Africa started to forward the files to the Captain and Samantha. She reread them as she did but did not provide any commentary to the in-ship waves. Better that each gathered their own thoughts of the raw data then compare.

An attempt to find, locate or open the extractions proved futile. She had known a few people that might be able to get deeper, but she did not have the skills. A deeper look into the links didn't provide any more enlightenment.

Then she turned away and looked off into infinity, letting the conscious mind be led by intuition for insight.

Sam looked back to Guild as he followed her and told her that he couldn't exactly power off. "Good to know," she said, leading him down a hallway, until she arrived at the modified room. "We need some time just to organize some stuff. You wait here and I promise I'll come get you as soon as we're done, cool?" She said, speaking very casually.

Sam was a casual person. That was all. She dressed casually and worked casually and spoke casually. The captain was the person who needed to be serious and un-fun. She was just the first officer. She could have fun.

The files began trickling in, his computer panel in his desk began bleeping. He sat up, and moved from his bed to the desk in the center of the room. Clicking on a lamp, Nick began to read.

Quote:

...its started exhibiting bizarre behavior outside of their programming such as <<ENTRY DELETED>>

That was largely distressing. Something needed to be done about that. Who knew what was wrong with the programming, and better yet, why was it redacted? Nick's eyebrow was definitely raised, there was definitely something amiss. He continued on.

Quote:

Again, more redacted material. Something was definitely amiss. Now to figure out what to do. He needed more data, he needed input and opinions. He flicked the intercom.

"Hey, Africa and Sam, could you meet me in my cabin? Africa, it's the foremost room on the ship, directly under the bridge."

He stood up and pulled the two chairs out from the opposite side of his desk, and brushed off the dust from their faded fabric seats. They needed refinishing, re-updating. He looked around at the rusty bolts on the bulkheads, the pitted glass of the ceiling windows above his bed, the ship itself needed refinishing. She was old. He sat and waited for his crew.

Monte watched as Guild followed Sam to whatever room Nick had established as the android's place. Figuring that the plans were to keep the mechanical secured, Monte nodded in consideration. Then he went into the airlock and started undoing the chains and cables there, to replace them in stock. He pulled the now open crate back into the cargo bay proper and went over the inside of it, looking for any clues or details that might have been missed.

"Seems still a problem as to where this came from. Not so likely that it just fell through a space warp to land on our gifted ship from several hundred years ago. Just don't make sense." He reached up and scratched the back of his head.

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

She slipped easily from her meditative state to a more conscious one. It was not far, her training and experience kept her mind subconsciously in more than one state at a time.

The Captain's cabin was easy to find, Africa had gone over the ship schematics while she studied up earlier. She tapped on the door, open or not, and waited to be recognized before entering.

Nick looked up when he heard the knock.

"Come."

Africa entered. He smiled as she crossed the short distance between the door and the desk, and he found himself standing up and smiling widely. That was strange, how did he get like that. He gestured to the chairs opposite him across the desk.

"Have a seat. Welcome to my quarters," he said, sitting back down, his arms wide, showcasing the glass ceiling over his bed. The stars passed by lazily as they flew. He knit his fingers together.

"Finding your way around alright?"

AFRICA CHAMBERLAIN

Africa joined Nick for a moment gazing 'upwards' as the ship moved through the verse. Africa smiled at the tiny moment of shared fascination for something far beyond the concerns of Valorous.

"Yes Captain." Though Africa was not quite certain of her duties on board, that was something Miss Samantha should be able to address later. Things had been quite harried on board so far.

The Captain's ease did not surprise her, even though it did not reflect what little she had seen of him. Her own mood and presence was practiced and designed to do just that. No longer a conscious effort required by her, it was part of her lifelong journey on 'the way'.

"Guild SS1142 is quite a find. It does seem to be authentic." Her eyes sparkled just a bit, the prospect of profound wealth for Nick and the excitement of this, at least as far as she had been able to ascertain, unique discovery.

"Sorry, sorry, sorry!" Sam said busting into the captains quarters. "Sorry, was getting Guild comfortable, and then I heard a crash from the engine room, so of course I had to investigate," Sam plopped down on the bed, folding her legs up into a crossed position. "Our pressure coils are completely outta wack, so I started fiddling around with them, when I remembered you called me, so, yes."

She threw a hand into her hair to pull and tie it back as she looked back towards the captain and Africa. "What's this meeting about? I've got a few crates full of parts I'd like to go work on and install. Still haven't set up my tool bench either, so, as soon as I could get to that, that'd be great."

Monte fumed for a moment, wondering what was going on with the captain's meeting with Sam and Africa. Leaving him out, but apparently not on guard, since Sam had been the escort for Guild to his cell.

He looked up into the cargo bay's rafters, and then snorted. Sliding his shotgun off his shoulder, he gripped it in his right hand, checking the readouts and then walking with purpose to Guild's suite and taking a position directly in front of the door.
