He had just finished his speech, if that's what some preferred to call it and the cave was quiet. Then there was a murmur of both accent and decent. Even with all the noise of the crowd Ian made time to approach Reese Foster and give her a quick hug. She had lost some weight, almost too much, but he still welcomed another sister back to the family.

All this was drowned out by a familiar roar of Gravity Drive Engines and Ian turned to watch the approach of a ship he was once very familiar with.

The Glory had come home.

She came in low and steady, stopped and rotated a full three Hundred sixty degrees, showing her sleek colors and slim wings. She smiled to show her deadly new teeth.

The ship was much slimmer than when she went to Motherloade with updated engines, armor and weapons pods. She even had missile racks.

Even with all the newness, Ian knew his home and his home knew him. Who ever was at the controls sure knew how to make an entrance and Ian was glad of that. He'd have to thank Becker for his choice of pilots for the trip. The man knew his stuff

Once the Glory had landed Ian gathered his crew to him, calling Jack using his comm, and made his way to his ship

He stepped into the cargo bay, Abe at his side, and stopped, a smile on his lips and in his voice as he spoe in a sing-song manner.

"Lucy, I'm hooommmeee!"

Then he stopped short.

At first he thought it was a ghost and his heart dropped with a sad ache.

"Beth, not you too..."

He spoke softly, only those nearest him would have heard. He looked around the cargo bay and saw the others of the dead that he carried with him. Sareen, Caliope, and Death herself. Then he looked to the living and noted that they seemed to see Beth as well.

"Beth?!?"

Those looking at him would have seen emotion, thick as Duraplast cross his face. First sadness, then dread then confusion then perplexion, that had a hint of joy filled with sorrow at what might have been. This was followed by a burst of almost pure anger.

"Where in the nine hells ....."

He stopped and turned away. Not sure of himself or his emotions and not wanting to vent at someone he had almost asked to marry him. Luckily there were other people that that he had to give his attention to as well or he felt he would be lost in the moment.

Just too much was going on right now.

Abe kept an eye on Ian as he made his rounds, giving people like Reese Foster a welcoming hug. She admired Ian for his unwavering view of family. It was one of the reasons why she loved him.

Love... She knew they were supposed to be taking it slow, but she had loved him before she left the first time and never stopped. She had to be careful though. She didn't want to screw this up. She wanted to do it right this time.

Abe smiled as she saw Glory approach and land. Ever since she and Ian had their meeting back in the Blaze about figuring out where they were personally, she was feeling more and more settled. Being on Glory again made her relationship with Ian seem even more real. They had had good times there. For the first time in a long while, she felt like she had a real home. She stood close to Ian and leaned into him.

"She looks good. Like home," she whispered to him with a smile. As the ship turned a full 360 degrees, she caught sight of all the new improvements. Gun turrets... As much as Abe loved her weapons, the thought of firing off a big gun like those? It was exciting. "With toys now too."

She stayed by his side as they approached as a group, a homecoming for them all. Ian stopped in the cargo, smiling before he sang out.

"Lucy, I'm hooommmeee!"

She loved his playful side too, but it didn't seem to last long. He put on the breaks, his expression turning sad. She stepped loser and was about to ask if he was OK, but she followed his line of sight until it fell on a girl.

"Beth, not you too..."

Abe's brow furrowed as she watched him look around the cargo bay as well before looking back at who could only surmise was Beth.

"Beth?!?"

She watched as a myriad of emotions played over his face. Whoever this Beth person was, she must have been important at some time in his life. The last one was one she recognized all too well; she had worn it herself when she thought back to her home and how she grew up.

"Where in the nine hells ....."

Then he turned away, putting his back to her. Abe reached out and touched his arm ever so gently and with obvious affection.

"Are ya' OK, Capt'n?" she asked softly.

She wanted to know more, but she wasn't going to push for details. She just wanted to know if he was OK.

Beth knew she should not have gone down to the cargo bay to greet the returning Captain and crew even as the hatch swung open. She stood her ground though, as Ian approached; watched with confusion as the emotions played across his face and opened her mouth to respond to his exclamation of her name and then the angry outburst.

It was bad enough watching him turn away; watching Abe touch Ian with obvious affection and ask if he was all right felt like a knife piercing her heart.

"Why do I care?" she asked herself, angry with herself that after four years she felt she could have any claim on him, especially the way their one "date", if one wanted to dignify it so, in his cabin, had ended and how she had avoided him for the rest of the trip and left Glory without even saying goodbye.

"Was it the thought of Ian that put a barrier between me and April or was that just stupidity?" She didn't know the answer to that one either.

"What do you really want, girl? Why did you come back to Glory?" she asked herself. It was another question to which she had no satisfactory answer.

"So are you going to run again?" She asked herself. That was perhaps a little easier to answer. She wanted to, but that would take effort unless she abandoned her medical gear and supplies and that would leave her with nothing and she wasn't prepared, having already lost so much, to lose the last of her possessions. It was easier to do do nothing, to simply watch Ian and Abe leave.

"It's only fair," she decided. "I left him, now its his turn to leave me." She knew it wasn't quite the same but Beth wasn't really capable of splitting hairs at that moment.

"I'm sorry, Ian," she said, not realising she had spoken out loud until the words were out of her mouth.

"Please don't let him have heard that," she wished desperately.

He almost didn't hear Abe. His mind was in a turmoil and he was not being fair. Reese had left the ship right after she had her throat slit by Tyler Lyndon and had not sent much word to him about her health.

He had accepted her back with open arms. Why not Beth.

He should be happy.

She wasn't dead.

His eyes looked around the room until they rested on Her cold eyes that held less warmth than the Black. He gave Death the 'Evil Eye' and turned his back to Her and was almost lip to lip with Abe.

His eyes got big in surprise, not realizing just how close she had been, even though he still felt the warmth of her hand on his shoulder. He gave her a peck on those wonderful lips and nodded his head in Beth's direction.

"Be right back."

He stepped around her and through the gathering group and made his way to Beth, a real and true smile on his lips and in his eyes. Crooked as usual, but there and real.

"Uhhh. Hi."

For the moment, for him anyway, there was only Beth.

"I'm so glad you're not dead."

And he meant it.

As the engines whined down, Sylandra relaxed back into the soft pilot's chair. Now, that was a good landin'. The controls handle nicely; responsive and firm. I'm goin' like this ship. So sweet. Shiny. Gorram new crew, but Mike seems nice. Beth, haven't had time t' get 'quainted, yet, but that will happen.

She turned in the seat and stood, stretched, her hands at the small of her back, and felt the pops of her vertebrae as she unwound from the long flight. Then she twisted, first left then right. Flexed her arms and swung them over her head. With a tight grin, she pulled her jacket from the back of the chair and slipped it on.

"Time t' meet the Cap'n."

She headed down toward the cargo bay, stopping at the head of the stairwell and listened to the conversation below before advancing herself. As her foot hit the deck she stopped and just watched in silence.
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow. Things should start to get interestin' right about now

Abe was a little more concerned as Ian seemed to be scanning the cargo bay again. She was about to ask him again if he was OK, but he turned to face her. Her heart melted as he gave her a peck on the lips right there in front of everyone and nearly blushed.

He motioned over at Beth.

"Be right back."

Abe rubbed his arm with affection and nodded, stepping so he could pass. She watched as he approached the other woman.

"Uhhh. Hi." "I'm so glad you're not dead."

Abe smiled at his words as she moved off to grab her gear and move it into Glory.

"Oh no, he heard," Beth thought as she watched Ian turn. If she thought she had been wounded when Abe touched his arm with such familiarity, It was as nothing to the pain she felt when he kissed Abe on the lips. To Ian it might have been a peck but in the time dilation of her pain it seemed to last for half an eternity.

"What did you expect, stupid!" she scolded herself and would have stamped her foot in frustration at herself if not for the others there.

Suddenly there was that crooked smile of his that seemed to be directed straight at herself and she forgot everything.

Ian said: "Ahhh, Hi."

"Hi," Beth replied shyly, the colour rising to her cheeks as she looked back at him. For that moment she knew she would do anything for him.

Ian said: "I'm so glad you're not dead."

Abruptly the spell was broken, his words jarring with the smile even though she could tell he meant every syllable.

"Why would I be dead?" she asked without thinking, the deepening of her frown lines showing her perplexity but even they couldn't mask the tears that appeared in her eyes as the talk of death brought back the pain of April and the part that she believed she had played in her friend's passing.

"Am I?" she asked herself, "Glad that I'm not dead, I mean?" she appended as though she needed to confirm to herself that she didn't mean Ian. "Would I trade my life for her's? and knew without question that she would if she could.

"For his, if it came to it?" Looking up into his eyes, Beth knew, without having to think about it, that she would, that she wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

"Do I deserve a second chance? Will I get a second chance? At life? At him?" She couldn't answer the first, and the second and third only time would tell.

"I'm glad you survived too," she said and then, because she suddenly, desperately, needed to be sure that he had heard it, added, her voice soft enough so that only he could hear, "I'm sorry, Ian."

Others came and went, he already had most of things on his person as it was. A few pair of boxer briefs didn't matter if he didn't pick them up. Right now his world was small. He had to make sure things were .... just were.... before he stepped out into the bigger world that was his 'Verse

"I'm sorry, Ian."

He heard her say and saw her tears. He didn't have a handkerchief so he reached up and brushed away the tears that spilled over, her face warmer than his fingers.

"Hey now. No cause here for any a that. ... Any cause in yer 'Verse? Way I see it is that you did what you had ta."

He paused and his crooked smile changed to a more self deprecating one.

"That thought just came ta me on the way over..."

He had looked down and back up to her eyes as he spoke that last part.

"I'll be honest, I thought you had left and died. I tried ta find ya but didn't get very far. Had ta find work since they impounded Glory on me. Had ta buy her back. She's all mine now. Lock, stock, nut, bolt, rivet and Bacta Tank."

He looked around the ship as he spoke, pride evident as he did so.

"I missed ya is all. ..."

He wanted to say more but the 'Verse cant be held at bay for long. Thoughts and problems started to break through the walls he had erected and his face fell just a bit.

"There's war comin. It's here. I'm glad yer with family."

He noticed someone new standing near by and turned toward her.

"Ian Dugan. Glory's Captain. Who might you be?"

The 'Verse had returned and he had turned to his new pilot. He knew that there were still unresolved issues between the woman he almost married and himself ... like not being that person to him anymore. At least that's what he told himself.

Sylandra stiffened as the new captain turned to her. Having seen his approach to the other two women, she wasn't sure how he would deal with her. She kept her face neutral so to hide her true feelings. An old system that worked for her when meeting new people. She wouldn't let anyone in to her personal sphere without the trust that she fave so sparingly.

"Uh, Sylandra Godwin. I piloted Glory from Motherload. Mike... we meet on another ship and he offered the position although there was no promise of duration."

She kept her stance, raising herself slightly on the balls of her feet to give herself a touch more height. She fumbled trying to keep her arms to her sides, and not crossing them in that obvious sign of uncomfortableness. Defensive. Not a good way to meet the man who makes the doeskins.

But she couldn't avoid those eyes. Those powerful eyes. Drawing her in...

"Great flyin too. Good entrance and use a space ta show off the new toys I had installed. Our last pilot was Alliance trained, you dont look nothin like her."

He did notice her movements.

"Relax Miss Godwin. I really dont bite ... Well, I really dont. Mike's good people an as I dont have a pilot and am in need of one, the position's yours until both of us decide different. Dont know if you found your cabin yet, but its that first one on the right as you go to the bridge. Mike's is across the hall. Mines right above yours, just aft of the Observation Deck."

He paused

"Welcome to Glory Miss Godwin.

He offered his hand and after she shook it he moved away toward Rikka and Monte.

"He tried to find me?" Beth thought incredulously. It wasn't that she didn't believe him, it was the thought that he cared enough to look for her. "Love? Or Hate?" She surprised herself by even asking the question.

Ian said: "There's war comin. It's here. I'm glad yer with family."

It was too much information to take in all at once and Beth's frown, that had cleared a little, came back with full force. Fortunately Ian had moved off so he didn't see the tears that welled up again and rolled down her cheeks. 'Family' had always ended and always badly. Her parents; her father dead in an accident, her mother as a result of complications during pregnancy. Her grandfather through accelerated old age caused by the stress of looking after his granddaughter. The hospital which had become family to her which she had left when she had her breakdown and finally the clinic after the fire and the death of her best friend.

"Will this be the same?" she asked. "Why would it not? Why break the habits of half a lifetime?" she answered herself.

Beth watched everyone, through tear-blurred eyes and slowly and quietly moved backwards, fading into the background. She would wait until everyone had gone before finding her way quietly to her cabin. She had a lot to think about and wanted time alone to work it through.
