Ayden watched in thinly veiled horror as the fight ensued between the Captain and another man. The food she got was dropped as her feet got rooted to the floor.

She just didn't know what to do.

Then she saw Rex motion back towards him and the ship before moving behind a pillar. She nodded and began to walk as casually as she could that direction, keeping her eyes straight ahead as she watched Rex load bullets into the rifle.

She slid behind the next pillar and waited in case they needed a medic. That was when she realized her pack was back at the table.

She slipped back forward until she was next to Rex.

"My medic pack. It's back at the table."

She looked and located it.

"I can see it. I'll just sneak back and get it. If it gets dicey..." she said. "Well, dicey-er. I'll need it."

Then she stepped out past the pillar on her way back to their table.

REX YANGTREE

Rex nodded and softly said. "Get it. And no need to be subtle, hurry."

Many were rushing too and fro now with the disturbance. Someone hurrying would not be out of place. Rex moved to the other side of the pillar so that he could watch everyone. It left some blank spot between him and the ship but it had been clear. One could only watch so much.

The conflict exploded in a second. Before Skarlet could even snatch her prey the man lunged at William with a knife. She ducked to the side when William stumbled out, the knife in her hand revealed and clear to see. Skarlet tried to circle around the fight, looking to blindside William's opponent. Her voices responded to the violence immediately, the madwomans head a flood of voices. They were all too excited to end being cooped up and her decision to try and play nice. It was a riot inside of her own mind, one voice shouted in joy, already telling Skarlet where to drive her blade, while another copy of her own voice cried muffled tears. This was normal to her, she had been in plenty of fights and had shed more then her fair share of blood. It was second nature to be able to put them out of her head.

All of these thoughts went through her head in a matter of heartbeats. But Skarlet caught the attention of one of the fighters that their quarry had brought along with him. She saw one of the men reaching for a weapon, William would have to deal with his attacker himself. She lashed out at the man with her knife while trying to draw her pistol at the same time. The madwoman practically pounced onto the man to lash out with her knife. Some package pickup this turned out to be, either way. Skarlet, nor her voices cared in the slightest.

The fight turned vicious. One guard raised his auto-rifle as the shots rang out. The other, turned as if to move further away from the action, perhaps to alert others. William's attacker flinches as a thrown knife sails past just missing his ear. William ducks and rolls away, trying to avoid another attack.

Siobhán seemingly flys through the crowd, coming low and behind the attacker, a quick slash that he doesn't seem to notice at first, but then he staggers as his achilles tendon gives way. Siobhán pulls up short of the attentive guard, just as Skarlet reaches him. Her blade slides over the clamshell plate and digs in where the armor fits loosely against less protected joints. More slashes and more blood stain skin and armor.

Rex holds his ground while Abby rescues her medical pack and the two of them huddle near one pillar keeping an eye on the crate and the route to the ship. The second guard, worried that this is becoming more than he can handle himself, turns toward a panel near the exit door.

Lupin, seemingly dumbfounded by the sudden explosion of combat, pushes the crate to one side, looking for an easy path past the action and on to the ship.

Rex Yangtree took a small breath and held it, then fired two shot at the guard that was about to fire.

Then another short breath in and he fired two shots at the guard moving away. Then a longer deeper breath and he repeated the two shots at each.

All head shots the rubber bullets would be painful indeed.

He stopped to look around. He readied to switch to live ammo if the situation escalated.

"So far, so good," she thought as she hamstrung William's attacker. Then she found herself in front of one of the guards without a clear line of attack. "Oops."

Siobhán looked up at the guard. "Hello," she said brightly, cocking her head on one side, "Are you having a good day?"

And then dodged around him, just as Rex's bullets hit the guard in the head. "This is why I am chosen for front line duty," Siobhán said with a wide smile, her eyes apparently focused on the surprised expression on his face. "My colleagues can aim for the head and shoulders without any risk of hitting me."

She slid the knife between his upper thighs from behind. "It also allows me to get in the low blows without stooping," she added, and put a little upward pressure on the blade. "If you value your jewels you might want to stand very still and not do anything that might distract me, for example, calling for help."

Ayden made a bee line for her pack and got back to her spot beside Rex without anything undue happening. What a stroke of luck.

So now she kept herself flattened up against the pillar as she watched him work with a soldier's efficiency.

She peeked around the opposite side of the pillar to see that rubber bullets were being used, which made her feel so much better. She also knew that it could be changed at a moment's notice.

Everyone else seemed to have a job while they were there. Hers was totally different. Hers was to provide medical assistance if needed. She much wanted that need to not be an option. She prayed it actually.

All the while rubbing her hands on her pants, trying to keep her palms from sweating. She was also quite aware of the gun she was carrying and hoped that was another thing she didn't have to use.

[- sorry about the delay, I was waiting on Skarlet... -]

Lupin slipped through, ducking under the volley of fire and dashed past pushing the grav cart before him.

William, rolling back up onto his knee, fires two rounds into his opponent's chest and then one into his face. The assassin gasps, clutching his face and falls backward, his legs twisting sideways under him. Rex's bullets bounced off the two security guards' heads, causing them to twist around, looking for their attacker. The attentive guard, realizing that his injuries may be more extensive than he had expected, grimaces and drops his assault rifle. He waved one arm behind him while dabbing at the blood coming out of his armor. Siobhán and Skarlet each clustered around him, ready to finish him off.

The other guard, swung back with his weapon and sprayed a short burst at Rex and Ayden; live rounds that spanged against the pillar scattering shards against their faces.

REX YANGTREE

Rex moved to the other side of the pillar as he switched to a deadly ammo clip.
"no more mister nice guy." he said as he saw Ayden scrambling. They had taken fire, fire they would not have taken if he'd just used live ammo from the star.

A feint to the other side of the pillar, then back to his original side of the cover. He opened fire with the assault rifle. Short bursts at the guard, a slight raising of the weapon from chest to head. First one guard, then the other.

Then a look to Ayden and the others, who needed cover?

Then he squatted to a knee, people tended to fire to high in a fire fight, especially the inexperienced. He aimed and fired at any threats to his crew.

Taking care to be very wary of not hitting his own people.

[- time enough to wait... -]

Other patrons scattered or ducked under tables. Bullets from the guard's gun ripped chunks from the pillar, and some skipped past, tearing into one of the unlucky guests sitting beyond. Red soaked her blouse as her small child next to her started screaming.

Overhead, red lights started flashing and klaxons blared all along the concourse.

William gathered his feet and ran directly at the guards just as Rex's bullets tore into them. Lupin had by this time pushed the cargo further down the corridor and out of danger of being attacked by the guards. The second guard staggered backwards and dropped his weapon, clutching at his throat. Crimson leaked out between his fingers and he gurgled before collapsing.

Ayden was hiding out just fine until she heard the child screaming. She turned towards the sound and was horrified to see that the child's mother had been hit in the chest with a stray bullet. What if something like that happened to Brandon? The thought of him standing there as his mother was shot was too much for her. Her heart flew into her throat and without thinking about anything else, she dove out from the cover she had found and slid to the woman's side.

The first thing she did was pull the child down before there was another catastrophe, but huddling on the floor wasn't good enough.

"That pillar there," Ayden said while pointing at another one nearby. "Run! And hide behind it!"

Luckily, the kid was a mess, but not gone enough that direct commands couldn't be followed.

After the kid reached safety, Ayden felt for a pulse. As she did, she flinched a couple of times as she heard bullets hit nearby. There were probably ones even closer, but she couldn't just leave the woman to die.

Finding a weak pulse, she ripped open the woman's shirt and found where the bullet had entered. It was close to the heart, missing it by less than an inch. She didn't know what she could do for her, but she had to try.

So she rolled her over as gently as she could and saw that the bullet had gone through and through and based on the trajectory, somehow missed the spine. A bullet hit her bag, Ayden realized that she was also in grave danger. They were out in the open and she needed to get both herself and her patient to some cover.

But pulling the woman would need some special actions. In order to drag her out of the way, she had to do something.

She had to stand up, just a little, to get some leverage. So she took a breath, got up on her feet and yanked the woman towards where the child had gone.

And she prayed for the both of them to get there.

[ - sorry, very busy time at work and I lost track of this thread -]

Siobhán left the guard to Skarlet, not feeling the need to help Skarlet finish him off. Instead she slipped her knife back into its sheath and grabbed the assault rifle the guard had discarded. It was a little on the large size for her but she was used to that. She found some cover and went down on one knee and put the butt of the rifle up to her shoulder and pulled it tight against it to avoid damage to her shoulder from the recoil.

She saw the guard firing indiscriminately toward Ayden and Rex and settled her sights on him, aiming for the head, knowing that the bullet proof vests would take the worst of the impact out of the rounds if she went for the easier shot to the chest. She squeezed the trigger twice, letting the weapon settle between shots and then moved to a new bit of cover; she was trained as a sniper, not as a front rank soldier and as a sniper she never fired more than two rounds from one location.

Siobhán saw that Lupin was making his escape with the grav cart and Ayden was attending to the woman who had been shot and looked around for any other guards who had been missed the first time round, particularly any who were likely to threaten Ayden, and gave them the same treatment before turning her attention to any more guards who might be on their way to join in the fun. She would have called out a suggestion to fall back but with Ayden already engaged in aiding the injured woman she didn't think Ayden would respond to the call and so for the meantime they were stuck with keeping the guards away from her and from between them and the ship.

REX YANGTREE

"Gorramit" Rex muttered to himself.

Lupin had the mission, Ayden was ... being Ayden. For a moment he cursed her for not remembering to think of ... of surviving, of Branden. He didn't hesitate.

Rex flicked to full automatic fire and sprayed at any hostiles, careful of his crew. He took a step to Lupin, "Get it on board and hold the door." Then he moved to Ayden.

"Ayden! You've done all you can, get to the ship!" He gave her a look. A look that he hoped would tell her to think about their one purpose in life. And that meant leaving others, being cold. Being someone her instincts would fight.

As for the other, all he could do was provide cover fire. Shooting at threats some steps away from them. As for their immediate confrontations, they would have to disengage. Hopefully they would realize he could cover their back.

"Get to the ship?" he shouted between a burst of automatic fire, then moved to cover and fired off again.

When Ayden got the woman partially across the hallway, she noticed the large streak of blood that was left in their wake. Then she stopped and crouched down so she could check again for a pulse. To her dismay, there wasn’t one.

Oh God… She had failed.

"Ayden! You've done all you can, get to the ship!"

She glanced up as another bullet hit way too close and Rex was also giving her that look. The one that told her that although this was horrible, they still had their own priority. That was their son. She looked over to the young child that was now motherless.

”I am sorry. She’s gone,” Ayden apologized. ”You need to keep hidden and wait for help. Don’t leave until there are no more bullets being shot, dong ma?”

She gave the child a sad smile and sent up a prayer for the kid to find happiness soon.

"Get to the ship?"

She just stared at him for a moment before another bullet actually missed her, but put a nice hole in her jacket as she was leaning over the woman. That was way too close and it got Ayden moving. As Rex sent out a burst of gunfire, Ayden pushed up off the floor, grabbed her gear and began to run for the ship.

The bullets had stopped, once both guards were down, and Rex, holding a guard position on the concourse, could only see other patrons rushing around, mostly looking for cover or trying their best to be somewhere else.

The small child whimpered at Ayden's remarks, but kept his place beside the pillar.

The crew managed to form up a short distance behind Lupin and head down the concourse toward the ship's conduit.

Skarlet's blade slid off of armor, but it found an opening between a joint. It blit into flesh and produced a scream from her quarry, as soon as it had dug into her target. Skarlet put her weight into the blade, dragging the knife down in attempt to widen the wound. She pressed herself close to the man, making it difficult to bring any weapon to bear. Her voices cheered Skarlet on, delighted that she could finally shed some blood. The next stab was lower, digging into his leg to pitch him onto the ground. Once Skarlet was on him she didn't stop stabbing. The good girl act was over, she didn't care about her comrades, or whatever real target they set out to find here, this was the psychotic raider that Skarlet really was. Even if he was dead, Skarlet didn't care. She was enjoy herself much too much to bother with the chaos around her.

When the others began to leave her head snapped up like some sort of savage creature. She looked down at the mutilated man below her, it finally setting in that he was dead. She was covered in his blood, so much for her trying to disguise herself as somewhat normal. She wiped a droplet of blood from her cheek, also taking the makeup that had covered her tattoo. She quickly ran after the others in the group making a quick getaway. She flicked her knife before folding it up. She managed to catch up to William, "Would you kindly explain what this was all about?" She didn't sound as angry as the question would suggest. She had to admit it did releive her of some of the pent up rage that had been building since she got onto the Galiano.

Rex moved his assault rifle around the concourse, any sign of guards or a threat and he would let loose automatic fire over their heads; or into their center mass if they looked like they would be able to get of a shot at his crew.

He moved to another pillar for a change of cover, just in case someone he hadn't seen had taken notice of him. It was all intuition at this point: look for threats, target the worse, move, then - after making sure Ayden was safe - he took position to be the last crew on board.

With the guards neutralised, Siobhán retreated but not before she had picked up the other assault rifle and the spare clips from both guards. If she was disturbed by what Skarlet had done to the one they had both knifed, she didn't show it; she had seen worse and blood didn't worry her. Knife and sniper rifle were her weapons of choice and when using a knife she believed in surprise attacks from behind rather than a frontal assault and sudden death from a distance had the advantage of minimising the risk. Her body count testified to the fact that she had not problem killing if necessary.

It was not something she would admit to in polite company nor the fact that she had lost count.

Siobhán passed Rex with one rifle slung diagonally across her back and the other in her hands. She went a few yards beyond Rex and then turned to face the rear, "her" rifle at her shoulder and readied herself to shoot at any one foolish enough to come at them.

"Covering you Rex, let's leapfrog our exit." It was a standard military tactic to ensure that there was always someone watching the rear and ready to fire while the rearmost person moved past. It meant they didn't have to walk backwards and risk both falling over and diluting their attention by glancing over their shoulders to make sure they weren't about to fall over something.

Ayden breached the Galiano's cargo bay and took cover behind some crates so that she was not in the open. Then she collapsed onto her side, curled up in a ball and began to weep.

She had left the child alone.

She had left the child alone.

He was all alone without his mother.

He was all alone without his mother.

All alone.

All alone.

All alone.

"I did that to Brandon," she whispered. "I did that to Brandon."

The pain was crushing.

REX YANGTREE

Rex moved without comment. He'd seen enough from the performance of the crew that they knew what they were doing. The two women especially.

He moved quickly, low and took a position behind and to the side of Siobhan.
"Go!" he said firmly. Then opened fired, a little overhead for principle; then looked for targets.
