Abe followed Ian as he took the transmitter down to the med bay to have it analyzed for fingerprints and whatever else could be gleaned from it. He knocked and entered, since the door was not locked. "Hi Beth. Do you have a DNA scanner or a very powerful scope? We need to check who the owner of this PDA is. It's either one of the crew or an extra body, and I dont mean Gizmo."[/I][/color] Gizmo... She smiled at the reference. Ian had mentioned Gizmo when they were together the first time. She couldn't quite remember what happened with it though. She made a point to ask later, plus it would give her a ridiculously thin reason to see him when she wasn't functioning as his body guard. She kept one eye on him and another on the area outside the med bay. He was thinking about security as well since he went over and made sure that Sylandra had the Bridge locked up tight and to make sure Engineering was as well. Sylandra confirmed that she was golden and asked for confirmation that Reese was too. She was glad that Beth had what they needed. She wanted to nail down exactly what kind of threat they were dealing with; one from within or one from the outside. Either one took two entirely different tactics to overcome. "If there is anything to find I should have the results in a few minutes. Do we have everyone's DNA profile on file or do I need to take a reading from everyone? On second thoughts, it might be an idea to take a fresh reading, just in case what we have on file has been tampered with." Abe's brow furrowed. She wasn't sure if her data was on profile or not. She didn't remember if they did collect it. After all, she was pretty wrapped up with Ian from the get go and when she first joined him, they were the only ones and traveling in Blaze. She couldn't help but to smile when she thought of those times. Anyway, if it wasn't on file, she didn't feel the need to handle it right gorramn then. They had a threat on board and if she took the time to do it now, she just knew that Ian would probably run off on his own. He was so headstrong and didn't want to listen to her, especially while on his own ship. Maybe this would drive things home for him, especially if they should have a stowaway. Or she could just lock him in his bunk and issue commands from there... Hmmm... Wouldn't that be fun? |

Becker quickly realised he wasn't even sure what he would be looking for. More electrical devices perhaps? And active transmitter would say a lot. Transmitter. Why would someone send a message, and what would they send? It was a concerning thought. "So have you sent any messages off ship recently?" Becker probed lightly, not sure that it would help, but not thrilled about conducting their time in silence. The first thing Mike went to was Jasper's desk, scanning the top then opening a drawer. |

JASPER DALTRY "No." Jasper looked a bit disconcerted. "Though no one said one couldn't or shouldn't be. And yes, I realized there's military aspects to this mision, and I'm aware ya think I've conspired for something against it. I ain't. If I had a transmitter of my own, and I don't; it'd be my ma. I ain't got no one else to be waving." Jasper was trying to appeal to both Becker's logic and emotion. He was a plain and simple man, he looked sincere. |

"Just getting the story straight. Best to know of any waves now, even if they're innocent." Mike was becoming sympathetic toward Jasper, and he was annoyed that that was the case. He didn't want to give any leeway. Not after a Tyler, who played everyone on board hook, line and sinker. He couldn't take that chance. But could he take the chance on everyone else? He had those he trusted whole heartedly, but there were those he hadn't been through the trenches with and those who had changed. He hated where some of his suspicions lied, but he'd have to tell Ian if Jasper was cleared. Mike moved away from the desk and to a closet. He became less and less confident in what he was looking for and sighed. Perhaps he was best waiting on the word from his captain. "You got any boardgames?" He asked, only half joking. |

That's I good idea. Ian said as he punched the comm again. "Mike, please get a sample of Jasper's DNA. He can wipe some sweat off his forehead and that would do it. Or get some of his hair. Jasper, please bear with us." After Mike answered he thumbed the control off and turned back to Beth. "Good thinkin. I really would not have thought of that." He looked at Abe abs back to Beth. "I suppose i should have." |

It was one thing to do the right thing, it was another to have it acknowledged by someone whose opinion mattered. Beth's cheeks went a little pink and not trusting herself to speak, she just nodded and smiled. Ian said: "I suppose i should have." Beth shrugged. "Isn't that why you have people with different specialities on the ship? So that you don't have to be good at everything or do or think of everything yourself?" Then deciding that she had probably not just crossed the line but taken a flying leap over it she blushed deeply and dropped her eyes to the deck. "Oh Bethany, why do you keep doing this to yourself?" She asked herself, again exasperated at herself for neither being able to say the right things or to stand her ground even when she knew she was right.

Med Bay Ian looked toward Beth as she spoke
He smiled "Damn girl. I really missed you. You've always said what I needed to hear, whether I like it or not." He looked to Abe and nodded his head at Beth, not seeing her blush or look down at that moment "Damn Shiny, that one." He paused "I really do love my crew. Family all." His PDA bleep with an alert. He looked at it "Ai-Ya! I've been recalled to Active Duty." He read
He looked around the room "We can use this." |

Med Bay "Isn't that why you have people with different specialities on the ship? So that you don't have to be good at everything or do or think of everything yourself?" Abe smiled. She liked Beth. She was smart and it was nice to have someone else tell Ian things that he sometimes forgot. He had to realize that he couldn't do everything himself. "Damn girl. I really missed you. You've always said what I needed to hear, whether I like it or not." Ian looked over at her in order to emphasize that point with her. He didn't see it, but Abe did catch the blush that Beth had when Ian had looked away. Hmmm... she thought. Interesting. She didn't feel threatened in any way, Abe wasn't the overly jealous type and anyway, she felt secure in their blooming relationship. "Damn Shiny, that one." "That she is." "I really do love my crew. Family all." "I know you do." Then his PDA beeped. Abe straightened up because the last time it did, they caught someone sending signals from on board the ship. "Ai-Ya! I've been recalled to Active Duty." What? He's been recalled? Can they do that? He wasn't exactly Alliance friendly near the end, at least that was the impression she had gotten. She moved quickly over to read over his shoulder. Once she did, her mind started working. "We can use this." Abe was wondering that if they acted like they were coming in because of the recall, how they were going to manage to keep them all together. She knew one thing for sure. She wasn't being separated from Ian. She was the one who directly covered his six (even though pretty much everyone on the ship would), but mostly he was her man and they had just reconnected. She wasn't losing that connection unless it was over her dead body. And that wasn't Plan A. "Who is on this ship right now that had loyalties to the Independents?" she asked. "Do you think that would be a problem if we got stopped?" |

JASPER DALTRY "Boardgames? nah, got deck a cards somewheres." He made no move to get them. When asked about pulling a DNA sample, "Reckon I can do that." he pulled out a hair from his head and offered it to Becker. "This whole thing stinks ya know. It smells wrong, I know you can smell it, the Captain did to." Jasper knew a bit about interogation and investigation. No matter how innocent or guilty one was, putting doubts in an accusers mind, real doubt, could be a slight edge. Right now he needed more than that, but one slice at a time. |

Becker sighed and took the hair. "You should be clear then right? Your DNA is your DNA and you haven't touched any transmitters." He paused as if leaving room for a confession. "I'm going to lock you in while I take this to Dugan, the we'll talk over the results." Mike headed through the door, then looked back. "Don't do anything stupid yeah? If you're innocent you're fine, and you're guilty, you're in the middle of space with no friends." Becker closed the door and activated a security lock before heading to the medbay. Once there he found the few gathered a presented a single strand of hair. "I got your... DNA... thing." |

Disapproval or rebuttal, not approbation, was what Beth had expected and when she received the latter, not just because Ian had acknowledged that what she said was right but had also praised her to Abe, the apprehension vanished to be replaced by an even more intense embarrassment that showed clearly on her face, exacerbated by the fact that she had lifted her head. "I... I... " she stuttered, intending initially to say that she had no idea that she had made such an impression on him but shyness and the presence of Abe made her reconsider. That he had included her in his statement about family, something that even Beth's innate sense of inferiority couldn't find a proper loophole, made her feel that perhaps, despite the trauma of the last couple of months, that there had been a silver lining. The thought of a silver lining made her thing of Sylandra and Beth wondered what she would make of her embarrassment at being considered worthy of inclusion in Ian's family. Fortunately Admiral Barrabas came to Beth's rescue. Ian said: "Ai-Ya! I've been recalled to Active Duty.... We can use this." "Wha....." she started to speak but stopped when she realised that Abe had already reacted and had asked a question that only served to confuse her more. It was her own fault, having not paid proper attention to what they were planning to do. She had some vague feeling that they were intending to do something the Alliance wouldn't be keen on and after a few moments it clicked into place, or at least, she thought it did. "Ian's planning to use being recalled to active duty to con his way past the Alliance patrols but that could come undone if we have known Independents sympathisers on board." she thought. She knew that she didn't have anything directly incriminating, having been strictly apolitical. "We might not just have to be concerned about crew members having direct loyalties to the Independents but also their known associates," Beth suggested. "I don't believe any of my colleagues of the last four years had pro-Independents or anti-Alliance sympathies but I am happy to supply names so that we can run our own background checks. At least then we will be less likely to be surprised and can plan contingencies." She didn't add that one of those might be leaving crew behind somewhere if the connections, direct or indirect, to the Independents were too strong. Again she doubted whether she was on the right track but she hoped that there might be something in what she had said that might be useful or might spark some other thought from Ian or Abe that might be helpful. Mike said: "I got your... DNA... thing." "Thank you," Beth said and took the hair from him. Preparing it for analysis helped her to focus on something that she knew was useful, "Assuming I don't mess it up."

JASPER DALTRY Just before Becker left, "No, I have not touched nor have a transmitter. Just remember X.O., this is a frame job. You'n your Captain'n crew are smart folk, that'd be obvious." Doubt, cast doubt. So no matter what the result, even more so if, and Jasper was thinking when, the evidence goes against him; it'll look more and more like a frame up. As soon as the door shut, Jasper slid over to his small trunk. He checked to make sure the small hidden blade was still there. Then under the sink and a quick check on the gun he'd put under the slide-a-way cover to access pipes. All good, all quick to get too. This was a bad story. He knew it, felt it. Someone had left him high and dry to take the fall. Rather he was in on it or not, he was tired of being the one left to do the time. And out in the black, one didn't do time. They sucked vacuum. |

It didn't take long to prepare the samples and analyse them. Beth did her best to make sure that she got it right, despite knowing that it wasn't as if it had to stand up in a court of law. It was normal for her to do things carefully, a side effect of her well developed inferiority complex. Beth handed the results to Ian without comment. Whether they were the same or different, she wasn't sure what it would prove.

"Make sure you yell the ship so they don't think to put a bullet in him." Certain crew members meant there was a little too much initiative on board - a few guilty until proven innocent mottos. "So, stowaway or traitor." A sigh was released. "We might need to talk Ian." He eyed him, having unwanted suspicions of crew. "In private, after Jasper gets the good news." And on that, Mike left to dole out such pleasantries. |

So Jasper wasn't the culprit. In a way, it would have been better that he was. At least Abe could get rid of the sick feeling in her stomach. "Let Jasper go. He's being played." Then Ian turned back to the group. "We need ta get ourselves on ta savin the 'Verse as we know it." Was he actually going to dismiss it? Something was amiss on board. It just wasn't something you could ignore. And she was sure that Ian wasn't unaware of the fact. So what was the plan then? "Make sure you yell the ship so they don't think to put a bullet in him." Probably true, but at least Jasper was off the list of people to space in the imminent future. He would have no trouble coming from her. "So, stowaway or traitor." "We might need to talk Ian." "In private, after Jasper gets the good news." After Mike left, Abe turned to Ian. Mike had a point. There was still a threat on board. She looked at Beth before turning to Ian. "Could I talk to you for a second?" she asked as she leaned into him to whisper in his ear. "Out there?" Edited by abbey, Feb 27 2015, 04:59 AM.

Ian nodded to both Mike and Abe and moved into the hall with Abe. Before she could speak, Ian knew that Abe would see the hardness around his eyes. He knew that the last time he had felt like this was when they were on the Blaze doing the Alliance's dirty work Someone had made the one place in all the 'Verse that should feel the safest feel like a threat, but they really didn't have time to figure that out now. The fate of the 'Verse was on their ... his shoulders. |

Once she got into the hall, she took a good look at him. She was glad that he wasn't as carefree as he leading on. Well, she wasn't glad that he had things like this on his mind, that was heartbreaking to see, but she was glad that he knew there was a definite threat on board. She hadn't seen such an expression on his face since they were being jacked around by the Alliance and his ship was being held captive. They only had the Blaze then. She couldn't help but to reach out and hug him. "I know this is killing you. This is our home and we shouldn't have to worry about threats from within while we are here," she whispered into his ear. "We need to make a full sweep of the ship. Check for stowaways and check for other transmitters or even listening devices." She pulled back so she could see his eyes, those awfully pained eyes. "We should start with your bunk and work out. That way, we will be sure that it is safe for you and have a place that you can work from without having to worry." Then she set her jaw and got that 'this-next-part-is-non-negotiable' expression on her face. "And I am moving in. Don't give me any flack about it. You need someone watching your back even more closely now," she said. "That couch in the office is very comfortable and I can use that to sleep on until I can think of something better."
